Urgent: Hello, I wanted to warn you that you displayed your network settings in the video. I'm no hacker, but I world think a hacker could use that info if they wanted..??
My menus were different than yours, so it was hard to follow some of your directions. Once before, I had tried turning off the thing that shuts you down for not saying "yes I'm still watching". That only worked on the roku channel. But your directions actually worked! Thank you, thank you! Once I realized your hints worked I came back to give you the thumbs up you deserve.
The cycle scrollable ads setting was missing on my 3810x-streaming stick software update checked today last update 5/23/24 I tried the other settingd but no luck. Any thoughts?
Thank you for helping everyone protect their privacy. The ad banner removal at the end seems to be a problem for a number of people including me. I don’t know if it’s possible to help or if ROKU got wise and made it harder to remove. If you are collecting info on an attempt to find another way of helping people remove it here is what I tried. I am using an old Emerson tv with a ROKU Ultra LT. After getting to the secret menu I changed the Cycyle Home Screen banner ad server to Demo 3 and restarted the Roku by going to system->power-> system restart. It rebooted and the ad was still there. I repeated the same steps alternating from Production, QA-QA3, Staging-Staging4, Demo1-Demo3. Thank you for your advice.
Everything went great, except the ad on the right side is still there. Also, an ad in the bottom left-hand corner for peacock 99 cents for two months. I checked and rebooted twice. It shows scrollable ads as always disabled, but the blasted things won't go away. Thanks for the tips! 🎉
Screensaver is actually a good thing as some TVs can get burn in from sitting on a single screen too long. Turning it off is a bad idea. It doesn't take that much for system resources to use.
It depends on type of TV you have. Not all types of TVs are at risk of burn in. That said a lot of people these days have OLEDs and those you absolutely have to worry about burn in.
@@Grasshopper-MediaPlasma….🤔Must have low watch time on it. Enjoy it while It’s still working especially if you were the person that probably shelled out 3 to 5 grand they costed when they were brand new. Remember don’t store them laying down.👍
On the subtitles menu, a tip for you is to have it turned on for replay. If you haven't heard or understood what someone says, rather than have to keep rewatching the same bit of film over and over to get what is being said, subtitles on on replay will show you what they are saying.
I use that one too….stumbled upon that setting quite by accident. But I still can’t remove the large square on the Right where Roku promotes movies. Home button 5 times, then the directional arrows was a “no go”. Even when I slowed down the video & wrote down each command (settings, network, remotes & devices, settings, secret screen 2)… just didn’t work for me. But more importantly, I’m much happier with my updated privacy settings!
Me too, what I really wish is that they couldn’t start campaigning til 6 months before the election, like in Australia - THAT would be GREAT, instead of 2 years of that mess
Im just SOOOO happy about the "bandwidth saver" I like the TV on low while I sleep and it shuts off and i have spent hours trying to figure out why?! Thank you!!!!
Nice, cheers. Personally I turn Auto-adjust display refresh rate on, on mine. I find it provides much smoother playback with less stuttering, at least on my ancient TV in the lounge. The downside is the glitches you mentioned, it often takes a moment while the TV adjusts to the new input and outputs a black screen for up to a couple of seconds, which can be quite irritating when watching content with ads, as it will happen each time a new one loads. I find the improved playback quality worth it the minor irritation, in my use case.
I have been considering getting ROKU, but with just me and my older brother. We have stuck with DirecTV. I love my DVR...Thanks for the video.. I will save it.. hugs
Hey Doc. The ad banner on my homepage is still there, even though I double checked the settings and restarted the Roku twice. I even powered the Roku stick, and TV, off and powered them back on, and the ad banner is still there. I’m using a recent Roku 4K streaming stick connected to an LG OLED 65 inch TV. Is there a certain amount of time that has to go by for this change to take effect? Please advise.
Roku used to have a setting that was somewhat hidden that would force the Roku to use a lower bit rate. Frankly 1Mbps gives a picture that is quite suitable for me. Unfortunately Roku discarded that feature. My internet has a monthly download limit and once that is hit the speed is reduced to something similar to dial up modem. I have to use satellite internet because there is no wired internet available to my house. I live on an island which is paradise. But the monthly limit can be used up in one evening of watching Roku which is always running at the fastest rate it can get.
Thank you so much for the info! 😊 I had to go back into "secret menu" and change the ad banner settings to Demo1 in order to remove the ad, so my roku may be a bit different. But again, thank you. And btw... I'm digging your channel name. 😄👍

Great video, though I wasn't able to remove the ads on my home screen (Hisense Roku tv). Not sure why, but "Demo3" didn't remove the ads for me. After cycling through each option (demo1-3, stagging1-3,qa1-3, etc.) and restarting afterwards, the ads still remained. Maybe the option to change it is in another secret option page (As the secret options you mentioned were "secrete option page 2", on mine.), but I was unable to change "Ad banner channel: production" on this option page.
I will definitely give you a thumbs up on this one thank you for this I've used Roku for years and didn't think about any of this. Any idea how to clear the cache on the Disney Plus app so it will stop starting the next episode at the end where it left off?
The mic on my Roku remote requires the button to pressed, so likely not listening until then. For that reason, I have no issue with using voice search, which I think is great!
Apparently the "Secret Screen 2" settings don't work on a Roku TV, at least they don't on my TCL . I changed them to what was in the video, and the Ad is still there. Even did a system restart.
I had a thumb stick with some movie backups. (Legit backups not pirated.) Today when I plugged it into Roku it said I had to agree to let the apps access and see what was on the thumb drive. If I didnt agree the thumb drive wont work.
i just purchased 2 roku cameras to monitor my elderly mom at her house. I live in a different town and i put her cameras at her house and a few that i bought for my house on the roku smart home app on my iPhone. In one screen i can see moms and my cameras all at once. My mom has a lady that takes care of my her during the day. She knows the wifi and password at my moms house. My question is......if she downloads the Roku smart home app on her phone, can she put my moms cameras on her phone when she's at her own house and start logging in to see on her phone with the app, who's at my moms house and eavesdropping and such when not at moms house?
It does, though usually it's just a different route you have to take. I'm pretty sure the categories are different between the different types of roku devices as well.
Fantastic video...this info is so important! I am hoping to use an Ethernet connection with my older 1080i plasma TV. I have 2 HDMI ports. Do you know if the ultra will work? As I understand it only the ultra has Ethernet hookup
Hi - great video! I have a QUESTION: I don’t seem to have the “Power” setting in the lineup you have been “Software Update” and “Guest Mode”. My system is all up to date. Thanks for your help.
I did not have the Power option either. I have the Roku Ultra something... Every now and then I would get the pop up question of "Are you still watching" or something like that and it gave me the option of clicking on "Yes" or "Don't ask again"...after a few times, I figured out to just click on Don't ask again and it has been a long time since I've seen it so I do not remember the exact wording. Anyway, that's how mine is...
The very last one you did with removing the ad on the home page, worked but didn't work. It removed the ad but left a blank box. I thought it would remove that space all together. Oh I see you had the blank space also....
I have the 4K Roku box, maybe 3 yrs old, they stopped offering updates for my device, accidentally found that in an old email or I wouldn’t have known! But it’s not letting me uncheck the voice recognition??
@@nickimontie , It probably does matter which. I have a tv with roku already on there, and also have the plug in roku, and they have slightly different menus.
You still get adds, but they won't be personalized. If you want personalized adds, they will "spy" on things you watch/like/ect and then you will see more of those adds. Kinda like when Google will tailor adds to things you search.
Here in the USA, I click on SETTINGS and scroll up/down to ZIP CODE and enter my zip code and that's it... I believe the UK calls them a POSTCODE...I would say try entering that but there are only numbers to choose from on mine, no letters...so I do not know how that would work. Sorry.
@dannab3660 thanks for your reply. After the tv was reset back to the factory settings and the correct postcode entered every time, we realised it was the online account that was registered over in the U.S
I followed your instructions to get rid of the big ad banner and it didn't work. The big ad banner is still there. I went thru the steps multiple times and it's still there.
HI Doc - Thanks for the video. I use older ROKU device (4210X). My WiFi connection/strength servicing it is strong. I find myself frequently restarting the device to mitigate various problems. E.g., Sling channel grid content partially disappears or channel rows become confused; Freevee programs do not fully load -- and other such problems - all of which are "fixed" by my restarting the ROKU device. I find myself restarting many times a day, which is a PITA. Is this an example of ROKU planned obsolesce? Could my problem be cache or memory related? If it's time to buy new ROKU devices, can you suggest which of today's model(s) offer memory bang-for-buck and superior cache management? Thanks for your reply.
I have a 32" onn. Roku bought this year. I also have a "honey well" air purifier. When I run the air purifier on low, regardless if the t.v is on or even plugged in the t.v plays music at such a low level, I thought I was going nuts for weeks. Until figured out where the constant mix of neverending music was coming from. Help me!
It would have really helped to let us know when you were backing out of a screen. A lot of times I’m obviously looking up at my screen following along and when you start talking about a different thing/subject… I have to go back and watch to see if you clicked left back over into the other list or other screen. Get what I’m saying? It kind of sounds confusing . Anyhow thanks for the video learned a lot.
I think it's funny that he thinks they'll stop recording if you don't want personal ads. We all know they'll just keep recording, just not send personal ads.
Unchecking personalized ads doesn't keep them from collecting data from you. It just means they won't use that data to show you ask that you're more likely to be interested. I pretty much don't see the ads, but if I am going to see them, I would rather see ads that I might be interested in.
As far as the themed background…. Pay close attention to them!!! Chose a theme and notice there are hidden movie character and objects in the moving screen. I have fun starring and trying to figure them out… wait a month and if you have figured them all out choose another. You can google the screen and get the answers to see if your right.
Loved the video help, it worked excellent ! Now for the question, when I power up the TV samsung 9000 the red light will flicker and need to press home before the TV turns off, on, off, on repeatedly, is there a place to correct this when power up and then have it go automatically to home? thank you!
one problem for those with a smart tv. most of this stuff is not available to change. Roku has figured out how to force things on us. If you have separate roku device the settings are there but not on my new smart tv. you can adjust certain features and turn off screen saver but the the ad issue, nope. like the ad 2 minutes into this video, inescapable. Everyone insures getting a piece of the gold. really though ive not found I get one bit less ads in my streaming or better or acceptable ads.
I just bought my husband a Roku, I’m not interested in it . But, I better learn everything I can about it. I had a bad feeling about this. I just subscribed to your channel. Thank you !
Seasonal Wallpapers and Sponsored Wallpapers. Turn them off. If you have selected a particular theme or wallpaper the Roku will replace it with adds about the latest Barbie movie or something. Frankly when I set it for the Space Theme pack I want it to STAY at the Space Theme pack.
My tv is now frozen unless I bend the knee to Roku's legal team. I am not sure what to do at this point. Is this even legal. If I don't accept their legal agreement I cannot use my 2yr old tv. This isn't right! Noticed if you push the star button, it takes you to the Dispute Resolution Terms of the binding individual arbitration agreement if you accept. The legal team has hijacked my television!!!!
hi there, I'm researching for my senior parents who are cutting the cord to save costs. Does the remote work the same no matter which app you're in? Do the remote's FF and RW buttons perform the same way in a different app? I noticed with my old normal tv remote, it would behave differently in Prime versus Netflix (fast forwards normally in one app, then goes to the next video in another app, or goes forward one frame at a time etc. with the same button), I wish to have one where the buttons behave the same way for all the apps. Do you know of a streaming hardware/stick that does? thanks
Do you know you can get your own Roku channel through SDK Direct Publish platform so you can be able to broadcast live and also stream videos on-demand
Unfortunately demo3 and demo1 both still resulted the ad on the left side. Even after reboot. I guess this info is already outdated. Thank you still for your help.
I found that the picture stuttered with the auto refresh rate turned off, as Roku automatically outputs everything at 60fps. Which isn't perfect for older programmes and films.
I bought a Roku TV back in April. Some months later it started having a "Continue Watching" section at the top, above a line, above my menu of Roku Channels. Is there any way to make that just go away?
I have a Roku Ultra but mine only asked that question at the bottom of the screen and only while I had been watching a "channel" for a while. Eventually I paid attention and noticed the "Don't ask again" option and clicked that, instead of just "Yes". Now it has been a long time since I have seen it... Does yours give you the option to tell it Don't ask again?
Doc Squiffy, thanks for all the helpful hints! I tried your last hack (turning off the advert on the main screen) by changing "cycle scrollable ads" to "always disabled" and the "cycle home screen and banner server" to Demo3, and nothing changed. The "Clear, a Roku TV" ad shows up in spite of rebooting the Roku. I'm using the Roku Ultra with the latest build. Any thoughts?
Thanks for the Roku tips! I’ve wanted to get rid of the ad on the right side of Home! 👍👍 I have Firestick & Roku & use both. I’m in Houston in US but use my VPN for UK & Australia. Thanks for all you do!! Cheers!
Care to say more? I live on the border with Canada so get Canadian TV OTA but would love to get all of their programs (other stations). Is there a setting via Roku to do that? Sounds like you do for UK and Australia. Thanks for any guidance.
Thanks for the help! That banner thing gets on my nerves! When there is new movie or show and they put it in the box, it's like your remote moves faster and always lands on it.
Help !! I have TCL Roku Tv. There is no option for Display Settings or no Advanced Display Settings. Cannot choose 720, 1080 etc nor refresh rates. System Update 12.5 happened 11/02/23. No my picture Aspect Ratio and Caption Size is SO messed up. More recent shows zoomed in & older shows a shrunken square box with large vertical black bars and tiny captions. Adjusting Picture Size to Auto or Direct makes no dufference & stretch or zoom only much worse. I HATE this. No cable box, no options on remote. Did the restart, unplugs, delete/readd apps. Nothing fixes the problem.

I have Hisense Roku tv. If I watch on the DVR, when I go back to Guide, it resets to All instead of Favorites. How do I keep Favorites?
It does, though usually it's just a different route you have to take. I'm pretty sure the categories are different between the different types of roku devices as well.
Thank you I really enjoyed that
And it was so easy to follow along and I appreciate that
Didn’t work to remove the big ad on the Home Screen and actually an additional add has shown up on the bottom left of my screen 🙈
There are slightly different displays for different rokus, like roku tv vs the roku device, so you might have to look around.
I couldn't get the last step to work. I not only have the ad on the right, but also one on left. Any thoughts? Thank you!
I just did the sequence to get rid of the advert above your head and restarted my Roku but it’s still showing, what did I do wrong?
Same. I have my settings exactly as shown, resarted the system and it's still there.
@@nickimontie frustrating isn’t it?!
@@mystikskye Yes. I wonder if it matters which Roku device it is?
@@nickimontie ,
It probably does matter which.
Any idea how to change the region on a roku tv ... bought 1 here in the UK, and it's all US apps and dollars
Thank you so much! Hopefully my Roku will stop buffering!
Thanks for the great info. I did as much as i could on my old Roku device. I just wish you went a bit slower.
I watched his video on my phone and paused it to go thru each step on my tv...
Great info thanks. Do I have to do this on every roku box I own ?
@Florida Man Thx
How do you get headphones to work with ROKU? I have a TCL set and they don't work. Tried the settings with volume and headphone but still nothing.
Is there any videos on how to add the addons such as a movie channel i got kodi on android tv thanks
1st time here, appreciate the info! Subscribed, commented and liked
Do you have a Roku channel
I followed your instructions to get rid of the big ad banner and it didn't work. The big ad banner is still there. I went thru the steps multiple times and it's still there.
Same problem! That appears to be a glaring error in the advice!
Awesome - that 3 hour continue watching pop up has been a pain in the you know what. Thanks for that tip.
Are there any cameras built into the Roku hardware?
I think it's funny that he thinks they'll stop recording if you don't want personal ads. We all know they'll just keep recording, just not send personal ads.
I wont buy another Roku device or TV ever. Dumb tv's from now on.
How to calabart this TV for screen fit size. My picture is way off I have tired all the basics steps .please help
Click on Settings, go right and scroll to Display Type, click it and choose one of those options...?
Unchecking personalized ads doesn't keep them from collecting data from you. It just means they won't use that data to show you ask that you're more likely to be interested. I pretty much don't see the ads, but if I am going to see them, I would rather see ads that I might be interested in.
As far as the themed background…. Pay close attention to them!!! Chose a theme and notice there are hidden movie character and objects in the moving screen. I have fun starring and trying to figure them out… wait a month and if you have figured them all out choose another. You can google the screen and get the answers to see if your right.
Do you have any videos for the Amazon Fire TV Stick 4k?
Do you think Roku 4k Stick is better? How much gb ram memory does the Roku have? 1gb/2gb/???
Loved the video help, it worked excellent ! Now for the question, when I power up the TV samsung 9000 the red light will flicker and need to press home before the TV turns off, on, off, on repeatedly, is there a place to correct this when power up and then have it go automatically to home? thank you!
I got lost from fast explanations! I suppose I will register and try again! Thank you for your information!
I appreciate this information, thank you. I did have to stop is several times, guess I'm slower than you speak.
Great video. Watched on my phone & made changes on TV as you coached. Thanks for helping improving our security. 😉
one problem for those with a smart tv. most of this stuff is not available to change.
Thank you !
Was so happy to hear about getting rid of the ad box but alas it didn't work. Ughhh! Tried several times. Followed every step. Sadness.
Do you have to do this to every roku you have, or just one and sets all roku sets?
Do it for each Roku Box".
Thank you! for the wonderful tips brother
I always have mine set on the Aquarium. Every once in a while Roku will change it but I change it back...
We are looking into this, video coming tomorrow on it
I did what you said for the secret menu but it didn't work on getting rid of that ad on the right side of the screen.
The last item disabling ads does not work on any of my devices.
Excellent video ty Cheers! Already subscribed and liked Thanks for your effort.
awesome... thank you! subscribed!
Thanks!
Welcome
Could you explain how to turn off the apps a little bit better thank you!
hi there, I'm researching for my senior parents who are cutting the cord to save costs.
Outstanding video!!!! Keep up the great work, Sir Doc Squiffy❤🎉💯
Nice video, thank you! I would like to connect my Roku sound bar to my wired network, can I do this with the USB ports and an adapter?
I bought a Roku TV back in April. Some months later it started having a "Continue Watching" section at the top, above a line, above my menu of Roku Channels. Is there any way to make that just go away?
I have a Roku Ultra but mine only asked that question at the bottom of the screen and only while I had been watching a "channel" for a while.
Eventually I paid attention and noticed the "Don't ask again" option and clicked that, instead of just "Yes".
Now it has been a long time since I have seen it...
Does yours give you the option to tell it Don't ask again?
@@dannab3660 no but a recent update gave me the option to turn off all suggestions and that did it.
Did not work for me either.
Doesn't work for me either
Yeah I have the same problem on my TCL Roku TV
I’ll watch this again & again . I’m learning w/my Roku Express & wondering if it’s worth it to have ? Just need more understanding .
Why UK & Australia?
