There is no practical way to end the cycle. I don’t agree with it, the state of the world today is completely screwed up, but there’s no logical way to make people come together. That will never happen. The only thing we can do is keep moving forward and focus on how we treat people and problems, rather than how society treats people and problems

The ones that survive hard times, persevere and strive beyond strife and survival towards at least stoicism are greater beings.
“Lessons learned hard are learned well” : tragedy tempers the few that aren’t crippled by these injustices to a degree that can’t be achieved by an easier life.
No one should have to experience what it takes to overcome these dark corridors but devoid of choice - there are occasions where trials by fire forms fortuitous forces

First of all, I think it was very heartwarming to see your reaction. So many of us can relate and are deeply moved by his music. He makes the people who have been through the trenches gravitate towards each other for comfort, support and just spreading love.
The first time I've seen the trilogy, I was shook 🥺 As a fellow "Violet" I was not prepared to witness Ren's rendition of Stevie, which unfortunately was very realistic. But it is also very important to bring the issue of domestic abuse of women and men in the open. Ren makes people deal with issues they would rather avoid and gets them to face their emotions in every way.

He's created a safe space for us to open up and reveal our vulnerabilities with less shame and far less isolation. I know I certainly feel less alone and am amongst kindred spirits now "my people" and conversations I've had or comments I've read etc have been better for me than any therapy session with a professional who hasn't experienced any of that (Sick Boi vibes there for my experience of MH and medical professionals as well as Safeguarding teams who just seem to treat everyone as a tick box exercise

He depicts generational violence so well, doesn't he? We're so used to Hollywood showing the sensationalised gore but Ren makes us picture it ourselves, and the horror of it is clearer than ever.
I started to worry that you needed to breathe as he came toward the end of Violet's Tale. It's so immersive that I think I held mine at the point, too. I've seen it several times now and it doesn't get any easier, nor do I marvel at less at the storytelling.
Lots of things get called 'Shakespearian' but I think this is one of very few that actually deserves it.

It's like a Shakespearian tragedy. Ren calls this Bardcore. Bards were Medieval singers who sang about what was happening at the time. Here he's highlighting dark issues that need to be brought into the light. Yes, it's a hard listen but hopefully it makes people more aware and think about how things could be changed.
Please note that not all of Ren's stuff is heavy - he does fun stuff too! Check out Bongo Bong with his band The Big Push :)

    • @Ranik-Jason
      @Ranik-Jason Рік тому +7

I think his calling of this is right. Bardcore matches alot of artists i found in the last years which all bring these important subjects up - it's always these storytelling type songs that deliver it to the masses "the right way" - and i can't find a better word for it than what he found for it.
For me the three biggest Bardcore talents right now are: Ren, NF and Santan Dave. But thats just my personal taste - there are tons of new artists practicing it and there were alot back in the days which contributed in this style.
Hope his will rise and motivate more musicians to follow this path and bring up these subjects - sadly there are far too much that are under the radar.

  • @kennethmichael5404
    @kennethmichael5404 Рік тому +81

I get so frustrated with some reactions when they miss the line "he swung possessed with the devil in his chest"....he killed her. So many miss that, some never catch it, even through the whole story. Also, for "Screech's Tale", it seems that almost no one catches that Screech's girlfriend and his friend Patrick, happen to be "busy", or not available, at the same time. Consider why. Maybe they were together? Patrick wasn't home...was he with Screech's girl at her place and that's why she was "busy"? It adds a whole other layer to the story. Also consider that Jenny and Screech were born side by side, and essentially died side by side, one street apart. Born on the same day (2005), died on the same day (2019). An entire family, mother and twins that never knew each other, wiped out by a cycle of violence. An abused mother, a 14 year old prostitute, and a 14 year old thug/murderer. Powerful stuff. Not sure if you caught it or not, but he did all 3 songs in a single take each, just like "Hi Ren". In the "Violet's Tale", the way he uses the acoustics of his environment to accentuate the song is absolute brilliance. The man is truly special.

Also Violets parents. Her mother turned to silence and her father to violence. Violet and Stevie did the same and so did Jenny and James. That Violet got abused is clear as day, but Jenny? She was 14, walked home in the middle of the night in high heels? One can only imagine what she did for work. She "walked the floor", streetwalker. She was abused just like her mother. Doesn't seem like everyone is catching that. 3 generations that turned to the same awful fate.
One other little nugget. Screech is calling Jennys cheeks rosy, as in red. Screech is standing in the blue light dying. Mix red and blue and you get Violet.
There are so many lyrical little nuggets.

Thank you for your honest and unfiltered reaction to this masterwork. Speaking as a woman it's truly lovely to see a man so openly and profoundly affected. After watching Violet's Tale the first time I couldn't go back to it for about a month, due to the overwhelming feelings it evoked in me. I've now watched multiple times, and without fail am crying from "ah, she never stood a chance" to the end.
Ren also has a ton of upbeat stuff, songs I play regularly to make myself feel great. Love Music Parts 1, 2 & 3, Losing It (Fisher Rap Retake), What You Want (totally fun homage - check it out, you'll see what I mean). And if you want to cry again, there's Ren + Chinchilla singing How To Be Me. Basically, with Ren, you cannot go wrong. OMG I am so glad I found you. Thank you so much for modeling male vulnerability and feelings like a fucking boss. Please do not for one second entertain the thought that you should have “held it together”. That BS kills good men for no good reason. Do you know how many men I have watched react to this who sit there, showing no real emotion, and their commentary is mostly about the storytelling, and how amazing it is. It astonishes me that people can watch such a perfect and real musical depiction of violence, and not feel something, or refuse to show their feelings. I’m a women’s health expert, and I also care about men’s health, because it directly affects women’s health and vice versa. Men need more role models like you. Your feelings are real and that is why people come to watch Ren reactions. I would actually give a lot to be able to see that again for the first time because it hit me so hard. I have taken care of those women. A lot of women have been subject to violence, either verbal, physical or sexual. It is an almost universal experience in one way or another. I am certain that if men were able to express their emotions and talk about their experiences without ridicule, the rates in men would be astonishingly high. A lot of men suffer abuse at the hands of women, but it isn’t always safe to report that. The culture that tells man to man up and push that shit down is killing good men and I appreciate you very much for the courage to show your feelings. New sub. Watching your reaction was as close as I can get to seeing it again for the first time. It was beautiful to watch it through your eyes. Thank you for letting us in. Your subs gonna go up up up. I’ve stuffed my emotions and feelings for years, it basically started to boil over. I had to look within myself and fight for my own voice. Be transparent about everything, and I’ll be honest, once I started feeling instead of talking, it felt like a weight had been lifted tenfold. Oh that’s so great to hear. That’s your body telling you that you’re on the right track. I really have come to believe that suppressed negative emotion is the number one cause of chronic illness and mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. Unfortunately, Western medicine is more interested in which prescription drugs treat which symptoms, as opposed to looking into biologic causes of disease and the impact of stress. And of course, the flipside of the coin is that those issues are difficult to explore without making people think you’re saying it’s all in their head. Once your caregiver decides that it is a “mental health issue”, they’re no longer curious about whether or not you have some thing like Lyme disease. Because mental health and disease processes in the body are completely disconnected from one another in healthcare. It’s a circular problem because we’re not coming at it from the right perspective and that has become more and more clear to me over the course of my career.
I’m glad you are feeling the benefits of no longer holding that beachball under water. It gets exhausting

Thank you for your sincere emotional reaction. 🙏

    Yup.
Me too, my friend. I had the same reaction the first time I watched this too. ... Same with "Hi Ren".
This guy is an absolute force, not to be overlooked. I'm 56 years old and have never, despite my wide range of musical interests, been so overwhelmingly moved by any one artist's works as I have been since I first listened to him about a month ago.
I had to hear more, so I looked to see if he had anything else out there in YT land, and I've been blown away!
He's not only a musician/singer/rapper, he's also a great story teller, playwright, director, producer, and performer.
I've subbed to your channel, because I really felt your reaction, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see you jumping into this rabbit hole, and I'd really like to see you react to more of Ren's work. ... (not all of it is as brutally emotional as this..)
    Thank you!
    Cheers, from Saskatchewan, Canada!

Dude, you're amazing. You express what many of us feel watching this. I am sorry this has hit you so hard; it rocked me the first time too. I just want to hug you.
This started with Ren reading an article about a kid knifing a streetwalker, then being shot by police. Ren spun it into Jenny's Tale, later continuing the story with Screech's Tale. It was a few years before Violet's Tale came along. It's an amazingly written story, performed with each act recorded in a single continuous take while recording it with a lavalier (Note the passerby at various points).
Now, Screech and Jenny were twins. Most likely fostered out to different families (Steve's going to prison, pretty sure) So Jenny was a 14-year old "Statue in high-heeled shoes" on streets "...she'd walked it about a thousand times before." A 14 year old in heels late at night?
A tidbit to add to the story: Screech's buddy Patrick wasn't home because he was with Screech's girl at her place (which is why she was busy).
It's crazy...Screech turned out like his father and grandfather; Jenny was quiet...silent even.

This 1 allways hits me so hard i came from a whole family of gangbangers the only decent person i ever had in my life was my mom i lost her to cancer wen i was 15 my mom was like a violet and my piece of shit father was a stevie....so violets tale hits hard because i grew uo watching my mom go thru that same domestic violence....then wen i was 18 amd i decided i was moving away from the hood to get as far away from that shit as possible my own brother and cousin stabbed and shot me up because they was gangmembers and has that "blood in blood out/death before dishonor" mentality so jennys and screeches tale hits me hard aswell because my whole family are full of screeches and i was very nearly like jenny and killed by my own brother....these 3 tales are just like a flashback to the darkest parts of my life

So sorry you had those horrendous experiences. I do believe (although it's hard to swallow sometimes in the midst of it when we just want to curl up and lament "why me, why me?!") that many of us, like Ren has now realised, we're meant to be "tested and twisted" - sometimes the insight of "why" and what we have "gained" from those experiences can be a long time coming - I'm 55 now and it's only the last couple of years I realised I have a higher purpose and likely chose this tortured path because I can now reach out to and support others who've had similar journeys with full empathy and understanding rather than the "Sick Boi" attitude of being talked at and our feelings and experiences so downplayed by the professionals leaving us feel even more alone, unheard and unvalidated. I hope it will not be too long before you can find "the why" of your experiences and perhaps it may be to reach others who right now feel lost and unreachable, or perhaps you might become an amazing writer who can use your experiences to bring a book or film true to life - or whatever way it comes to you 🙌

Must be 20 reaction videos to this and as well as the song getting me, if the reactor clicks to that plot twist I lose it every time. Don't feel like you need to do more than what you did, realism is why we're here. Unbelievable isn't he. I'll admit I am not a big music buff but this man seems once in a generation or even more rare. I'm blown away. As I've read it both Jenny and Screech were real people. Ren read the newspaper one day in 2019 and buried on the 6th or 7th page was a short "write-up" [I guess you'd call it] on the tragic death of two 14-year-olds; a girl, Jenny, and her killer [proper name James somebody] known in the Neiborhood as Screech. He thought that kind of news [of the decay in society that resolves in such ways] deserved more attention. So, he wrote the first two of the trilogy shortly after reading of them. These few years later he took on the task of writing a fictional story to further drive home the point that this continuing cycle of violence and decay in society should be paid attention to. So, the entire Violet story he designed to fit the personalities of those two and how they are made. Very impressive writing [and storytelling] and motivation resulted in Violet's Tale. Easily imagined they were brought up in separate foster homes. Jenny took on the quiet nature [still nature] of her mom [freezing in her tracks, unable to move when commanded to give up her goods] while Screech took on the character of his father. 14 years after two zero zero five they met each other probably for the first time and a newspaper article on the 6th or 7th page is what became of it. [as Ren has imagined it for us] His story telling has purpose. Real purpose. That is what has him stand alone [it seems] in today's society. [unique as an artist]

Ren is a really cool unique addition to the music world, he brings with him storytelling and theater and feeling far more than just bopping your head to a beat. His words makes you THINK. He dips his toes into classical, opera, rap and singing, and does it really well. He composes, writes and produces his own stuff, even beat boxing on his tracks. And what he can do on a guitar is IMPRESSIVE. I’m not sure the world has experienced such a well rounded musical genius since Freddie Mercury. For real. That’s not even hyperbole.

I love that this moved you! That the parent came out with so many feelings at once! This might be long and rambley but since everyone is bonding and sharing the love I’m just gonna go with it…
One day in the future when your little girl is looking at the man she fancies, maybe he’s new or maybe they’ve been together for years now and she’s contemplating whether to let slide the stupid, hurtful thing he did. Feeling insecure over him running his mouth. Creating excuses in her mind to justify and take the blame for a violently red red flag he’s so apologetic for. Whatever it is, cuz there will inevitably be something. She’s gonna take a moment to turn and look back at you and realise that she knows the true measure of a man. She knows her own worth. Knows she is loved. That she isn’t alone in her problems and her people will always be there and give her a soft place to fall when she needs it. Because of that she won’t ever settle for a life like violets. She’ll fight. She won’t settle, period.
Personally, knowing that my family genuinely loved and accepted me, unconditionally and without limit made all the difference in life. It may not protect you from horrible things happening but it gives you an inner strength, a will and a fearlessness in the face of any situation. It’s a built in sword and shield that allows a confidence and sense of ~safety~ of peace in your own skin. And even when that feeling is difficult to find through the gloom sometimes, you know it never actually leaves. It’s the best gift that any parent could ever give their child.
I could have come home with blood on my hands, told them I’d become some murderous, satanic, pregnant, lesbian, junkie hooker. Pierce my eyeballs and shave my head. Whatever… and tho they may not understand, may truly hate my choices, not support my actions, be pissed beyond belief… at the end of the day, none of it would ever change the fact that I am theirs and they are mine. Your heart recognises them as ‘home’. And ya know, having that one thing that is forever unshakable, solid and unequivocally true can save your life. It encourages you to be free to be the best version of yourself possible. Free to explore, to learn, to fuck up and find joy. It’s magic. I hope one day you get to see your bubs all grown and standing tall with a big smile all full of that feeling. 💜 much love bro, to you and the rest of the community sharing the moment 🫶
