I agree with your line of thinking about the delay on the app. Just yesterday, I was in an Uber, and we got stopped by a very long, slow train. I received a message from Uber asking if everything is ok or do I need help because they noticed we hadn't moved in a while.
I was shocked and relieved to learn, first hand, of them doing this.

I've taken a taxicab alternative a grand total of once in my life. That was in May. I was nervous getting in. Had no way to get home after my car died & got towed, & the repair shop woman said she'd track me on some app to make sure I got home alright. I thought, ok, cool, someone knows where I am with this stranger.
The guy didn't really speak English. The ride should have taken 7 minutes tops. But he passed too close to a cop that had pulled a car over. Sure enough, the cop got in his car, turned on his lights, & got right behind us. Long story short, we spend at least 20 minutes as the cop checked this guy's record out-- it was his 3rd Uber ticket in a couple months, & this driver couldn't comprehend what he'd done wrong. Cop & I *repeatedly* tried to explain the damn ticket's reason, OMG, as the guy got emotional about possibly losing his job. I eventually got home. Next day repair shop woman said yeah, I noticed you were stopped for a long time & thought it was weird 🤦.
Just like the ppl in this story, why bother tracking, if you see something weird then do nothing about it? Anyway, no more Ubers for me. I did tip the driver really well 👼 felt bad for him. All the way from India, which has real different rules of the road 🙈

What a heartbreaking story. I am so sorry for her family. I took a self defense class which focused primarily on Ubers. 1. ALWAYS sit behind the driver. Most think behind the passenger is the safest. It’s not. A driver can easily reach for you. Sitting behind the driver give you leverage with his/her seatbelt to use against them. It goes around the neck. Use your imagination. 2. Make sure the child lock is not on !! Open the door yourself from the inside before the driver takes off. If the child lock is on, demand the driver unlocks the door immediately. If he/she does not, use their seatbelt to your advantage. 3. SHARE your location with a friend or family member !! 4. Your phone can be used as a self defense device. 5. You can buy self defense items that attach to your keychain that’s not pepper spray or a pocket knife. Forgot what it’s called but it’s long and has a pointy end to it.
And PLEASE take a self defense class !! A real one with someone who knows what they’re doing. In our class, we were even made to get in a trunk and get ourselves out. It was intense but I feel so much better I took it.

I’m hesitant to share this here, in a UA-cam comments section, but it is so surreal to watch Annie cover Sami’s story. I grew up with Sami in Robbinsville (k-12). I first met her in our 1st grade class. She became a good friend of mine over the years, we did dance classes together and sleepover parties, beach trips, rec sports, etc., and eventually grew apart somewhere in our high school years. It is so true-Sami’s energy goes unmatched. She was a kind and thoughtful soul who was always so much fun to be around, there were always laughs to be had with her. Sami was such a perceptive and genuine individual, always making others smile and feel welcome and included.
Sami pops up in my dreams once in a while, and the dreams are about her coming back and her death being this huge misunderstanding, that she was never gone, and her friends and family are all so relieved and we throw a big party; and then at the end she appears to me, asking that I tell her parents she’s okay now. I know this is my brain processing the situation, but still, these dreams feel so real. Years later, my heart continues to break knowing that this happened to her. Sami had so much to accomplish and look forward to. Rest in peace, Sami. Thank you for covering this, Annie.

Hopefully you learned from her mistake of blindly choosing a college without checking the racial demographics of the city in which it's located. The second I heard "Columbia" I could have described her murderer. I know the demographics of that city and I know the violent crime stats and who commits the majority of it. Your chances of ending up like your friend are exponentially greater in South Carolina than someplace like Utah or Montana, or even at UT here in my city of Austin.
Like I always say, you can either choose oblivious wokeness or based survival. You can't do both. Sorry you lost your friend. I wish she'd been more educated about the world she lived in.

Annie - there’s currently a safety option in the Uber app (you have to turn it on in the settings) that automatically sends your ride + location to whoever you designate (for me it’s my sister and my husband) and you can require that every time you call a ride, you are given a (randomized) 4 digit code that you have to give to the driver and they have to enter it into their phone’s Uber app before the ride will be able to start. I never get into the car until I see them enter the 4 digits and then the ride begins (can be seen in my phone app as well once the code is entered and matched). Dunno if this change was a result of this case, but I have been using these safety options in Uber for a long time now.

My uncle was murdered by a kid he met at rehab and offered to help when he got out. He killed him for his $400 paycheck. Annie as someone who also has major TMJ issues I’ve recently has an MRI. I’m also a nurse and based on what I’ve heard, I highly recommend avoiding surgery at all costs. Artificial joints only last between 10-20 years and typically you can only get two replacements total in a lifetime. You mentioned you’ve tried steroid injections. Have you been told about Botox injections to relax the masseter muscle? Make sure to always get a second opinion from another doctor whenever possible. My orthodontist friend recommended I get my overbite fixed and then get a night guard (which it seems you have) and then see how it goes. Best of luck! TMJ stuff is the worst!!!
Edit: just had a conversation with my specialist who is recommending I see a dental specialist to make a dental splint for me to correct my bite. Dental splints can do wonders apparently so I’m stoked to get one (minus the enormous costs)

There aren’t any other options at this point and replacements are apparently much longer lasting and better in general than fusions so I hope I will be okay. This will be the 7th major surgery in 3 years. Hopefully the last for a very long time.

There are three safety settings in Uber you can turn on to help a bit.
    1. There is an option to request a PIN code be generated every ride that you can ask the Uber driver for.
    2. You can share your location with a (or more than one) ‘trusted contact’ throughout the duration of the ride once set up it’s just a button to tap when calling for a ride.
    3. You can have Uber send you a ‘Ride Check Notification’ that will send an alert to your phone if they notice that things have deviated too much from the planned route that you have to dismiss (behind your phone password) and you has options in case of an emergency.

The reason I never get in an Uber is there are no security checks, you wouldn’t know what madman/woman is behind the wheel. We always get a taxi, preferably silver service, at least they have some form of security and background checks. I know it could still happen that a cab driver could do something terrible but I still feel safer with a SS TAXI. Uber, could be anybody. Anyone can stick a sign in their car saying Uber to lure someone. I personally think it’s wrong that taxi drivers have training security checks, pay a license fee, but anyone can decide to be an Uber driver at no cost, security nothing. If they allow ride share they should be treated equally in that they ALL have to have a security check, driving test, and any fee payable should be the same for taxi or Uber. I know a friend of my parents many years ago paid $250,000.00 for a taxi license…. SO WRONG. IMO
I feel for poor Sami, what a monster, glad he got life without parole…..as he should have !

Every time I hear of one of these cases I tell my granddaughters to always use the buddy system. To always take a gf with them to the BR and not to leave anyone behind if they are leaving. Even HS games and the like. Parents should always wait for kids, esp girls, if their parents haven’t gotten there yet.
That happened to my kids once. They were cheerleaders and their bus got back earlier than expected. So I went at the time they were expected, never realizing they had been waiting with a parent/coach for at least 30-45 min. This is before everyone had cellphones and they were quite expensive. Even the coach didn’t have one. I asked my daughters why they hadn’t called me, and they said a bunch of boys were crowded up near the payphone. And they were intimidated to walk up there. I was so upset and scared for what could’ve happened, and thanked the coach for staying. They got a cell phone after that!
My whole point is even today with cellphones things can happen. Phones can die. Buses can arrive before the parent can get there. We need to prepare our girls to not do anything alone. Two can fight better than one. And we should never leave a kid who’s waiting for their parent.

And the teacher that left her 13 y/o in a hot car to have s*x and make out with her BF) yelled at her during her speech about how he was innocent and a good kid etc.... I watched the trial. If he didn't act so weird after the murder he could have gotten a hung jury or found not guilty. Almost all the DNA in the car had more than 4 contributors. His GF played a huge role in him being convicted (especially proving he always carried that knife), but I do NOT believe she was scared of him. She drove the bloody car to get cigarettes and drove the car with her 2 kids in the bloody backseat. I know doing laundry and buying cigs would be my top priority instead of calling police.

Read my comment. Robin McGraw has an App available for DM violence victims. It connects to the police and starts recording if unavailable to talk. It's available for Android and iPhone. I think all young people should have it installed . It's disguised as a different app..not a " help me app" like a calendar or something benign.. I had it on my phone when in a rough relationship. My son's won't install it. One is " a big bad marine" who is married and thinks he is invincible..( my daughter in law 🙄, I believe is emotionally abusive.. he is afraid of her.. but that is an entirely different topic..sigh) and my youngest.. regardless of my telling him you choose your consequences in life, good or bad.. make good choices.. bc you will be held accountable if you make bad ones.. sigh.. They think they know everything and we all know they don't. We as mom's just have to pray.. put things in their ear.. about choices.. I also tell both how proud of them I am and I will always love them unconditionally.. I just put in the conversations, choices made today, will effect your tomorrow.. think twice... and think about your safety and safety of others.. " OK MOM!" or " I know".. rolling my eyes... I think boys make dumb decisions with driving cars . Showing off.. taking risks like that.. my boys know better than to ever hit a woman, take advantage. No means no.. Yes when a woman has been drinking is a NO.. I have been preaching this to them since they have had hormones. Some moms think they shouldn't have to have hard conversations. I think it's my responsibility to even though they might be uncomfortable. I have 2 respectful sons . Especially to women.. so much so.. my oldest gets walked all over.. and I'm not just saying that.. I didn't cover that apparently.. that your wife should respect your feelings to . Sigh . Anyway I can't imagine having a daughter. The kind of worries you must have.. My oldest son who is 24 just had his first daughter!?!?. And no one can see her.. They say
Maybe spring?!. See? My son took FMLA..3 MONTHS off to help.. PFSST.. MY ex husband.. went to work same day both my boys were born.. and my first son.. I had 2 stepsons under 4 living with us.. so I'm surprised he was able to take off 3 months.. seeing how he is active duty.. IDK .I worry myself sick. See.. my son's treat their women well and they certainly didn't learn it from their narcissistic Dad. Sorry I vented to you.. if u need to vent back feel free. I pray for all the young people today.. the shit I have seen some do on UA-cam. I think WTF.. and I certainly would not defend them as their parent.. their ass would sit in jail and they both know it.. they will be loved always.. but I certainly would not like them .. anyway.. have your dau download that app.

That might be a way to confirm that you are in the right vehicle. If the driver doesn't ask for that, something is wrong. There is an option to record for safety. Be safe, everyone!

The problem is that as women we need to be vigilant. I went to a party city, Ybor in Tampa Bay, with people I barely knew. They were all friends and we were bar hopping with a limo to carry us all over town. After many drinks one young lady walked outside by herself and I went to catch her. She was young and teary, so I walked her around until we made it back to the group. Later two of her friends thanked me for keeping an eye on her. She could have been a victim that night. Be vigilant. If you want to drink to excess then stay home where you should be safe. Women are more vulnerable in this situation.

I live in a college town, where partying and clubbing is a nightly thing. The amount of times I’ve seen drunk people attempting to get into random cars that are just parked thinking that they are their Uber or Lyft is ridiculous. I’m so glad her family is speaking out and trying to inform everyone on the right way to go about these things! I’ve even had people try to get in MY car, and being like “you’re my Uber right????” It’s so sick to think that there are people who would prey on these vulnerable individuals that are just trying to have a good time. When I was in college in this same town, I took it upon myself to be the “mom friend” and make sure all of my friends got where they needed to be. I would even take pictures of the men they were going home with just in case! I feel so terrible for Samantha’s family and friends, this is such a tragedy.

Sobriety like what you're talking about - a few beers, some wine, whatever in moderation - but not having this huge party culture where it's normal to see people wasted after hanging out with friends, especially on college campuses. This happened to my son in Uptown Charlotte, NC after he attended a friend’s 21st birthday party at a popular club in Charlotte. This also happened before Sam…He drank too much, his friends helped him order a LYFT, but they did not make sure the car he got into was the actual driver. By the Grace of God these two men returned him home but not before they drained his bank account.
I will say when I think about what happened to Sam and how it can happen to so many other people it is beyond frightening.
I am fortunate my son only lost money and not his life. We had a very serious sit down with him and his friends about safety of using a service that is SUPPOSED to be about safety.

Annie, I am only 23 and have been dealing with TMJ for the last 7 years. I highly recommend seeing a neurologist rather than seeing a dentist or surgeon! I have received medical botox and steroid injections for my TMJ in the jaw, which has been a lifesaver. I go in every 3 months for the botox, which is covered under my insurance as my neurologist codes it for chronic migraines! As you have already tried many other options, your neurologist can probably get it covered for your TMJ so that you won't have to test treatments for migraines that are unnecessary if you don't experience them as well! Hope this helps!
