If a person assumes someone is guilty for invoking their right to an attorney they are ignorant. Innocent people are convicted all the time for things they say to police without an attorney present thinking they are "helping" an investigation. I think I almost became a victim one night because the sober home I was living at had a curfew and I would get kicked out if missed it so I was bawling when I realized I went half way across town to the wrong street with a similar name (new city) and these men saw me bawling and offered to drive me back and once inside their van started saying I owed them "favors" and there was no way to open the doors from inside the van in the back. These comments pass the vibe check - I think we collectively need to have a bigger conversation of how harmful alcohol is without someone screaming “victim blaming!!” It’s just reality that many or most crimes against young women involve alcohol like this. That doesn’t mean the victim is at fault or deserved it but we need to make young people aware of how dangerous it is - not just dangerous because you might get alcohol poisoning but because it makes you a super easy target for crime.

Not to mention, how quickly and easily it can become a harrowing addiction. I was surrounded by alcoholics and addicts since my teen years, as I was an addict and ran with a troubled crowd. I've had many friends lives cut short because of it, including my best friend. But even more heartbreaking, is seeing someone not even start their own life, instead being entirely consumed by addiction, and having any hopes or dreams fade into the bottom of a never ending bottle.
It makes me so frustrated that it's treated so irresponsibly here-with society and advertisers actively encouraging and promoting it.

It’s hard to say either way what I think happened. It’s definitely possible she was a victim of opportunity for some random attacker. When I was in college I had friend/roommate that was a binge drinker. Before we lived together there was a time we were drinking at my apartment, and she became dead set on walking home. Another friend and I were able to stop her for a while, but in the middle of the night she found her escape when I went to the bathroom. She literally went out and I could hear her running away.
And in this case, you can’t really expect great choices from other intoxicated people around her. So it’s not really fair to go after them imo. When someone is determined to do something they’ll usually find a way.

As someone who frequented the same places & parties as Lauren, I will say the simplest answer is the most plausible. She was having the time of her life at IU, but like many of us, didn't know her limits. Unfortunately, the people around her prioritized their own well-being & ambitions over doing the right thing. They had too much to lose then & even more so now. It is my hope that one of them has enough conscience left to at least lead LE to her body. Exactly- it sounds like she wanted to party and she lied to her boyfriend because she knew he didn’t want her doing that and he might try to stop her. It sounds like it may have been a codependent relationship where Jesse would end up “babysitting “ Lauren to make sure she was safe when she would go out- and he was concerned about her substance use as he was aware of her heart condition and how dangerous it could be. He probably feels guilty for what happened even though I don’t think he was to blame. Lauren’s parents need to realize that she had a drinking problem and it just seems like they can’t accept that. It doesn’t mean she was a bad person but her choices did put her in unsafe situations where bad people could take advantage of her.

There’s a difference between blaming a victim for what happened to them and simply acknowledging that they participated in activities that resulted in increased vulnerability. Of COURSE no one deserves violence because they participated in drugs or other risky behaviors, but there’s nothing wrong with acknowledging the fact that without engaging in those behaviors, the person would have been at a less elevated risk of something bad happening to them. I am unbelievably lucky nothing permanent happened to me when I was younger and engaged in risky activities, but I acknowledge that some of the choices I made put me at an increased risk of harm. Lauren never deserved what happened to her, but the choices she made unfortunately and undoubtedly raised the statistical risk of her encountering foul play.

Just horrible. I'd lose my mind at some point. I hope and pray that her family will get answers.

If it had been an accidental overdose her body would’ve been found. I don’t think a group of college kids could’ve known how to make her disappear so completely. The mounting circumstantial evidence that Josh Hallmark has discovered around Israel Keyes potential involvement has me fairly convinced that she is one of his victims. 😢

As if it was someone who knew what they were doing for sure. Or they had the means of power to make a garanteed disappearance happen. I live about 40 miles north of Bloomington & worked there during this time, so I’ve studied this case a lot. I briefly met the Spirers several days after Lauren went missing. The pain in their expressions was heartbreaking. The Spirers also hired Bo Dietl, the infamous private eye who pissedoff the b-town cops by calling them “Gomer Pyles”…Prayers for the family and justice for Lauren!!!

This case has always been so close to me!! I have Long QT Syndrome. I was diagnosed very young, things are so different with how it’s treated today. I had a cardiac arrest at 16, survived. I have an aunt who survived cardiac arrest, a cousin who passed at 25 from drinking the night before and the startle of the alarm clock that morning. I got a pacemaker/defibrillator implanted after I survived that arrest. Im now 35. A completely different person than I was in college!! I’m a born again Christian wife and mother today. Thankfully, my 3 children did not inherit Long QT Syndrome. It’s a crazy syndrome in that many people have zero symptoms… ever. They’re asymptomatic (like most of my large extended family). Some people, they’re first symptom is fatal or near fatal (like my aunt). It’s highly treatable though if you know about it and take your beta blockers like you’re supposed to and avoid certain medications and drugs.
In college, I was an “invincible” partier, because I had a pacemaker/defibrillator. Such addict thinking, but the anxiety ruled me from having this condition and as counter intuitive as it sounds, being messed up helped that anxiety. I went to the top party school in Wisconsin (UW Madison). I REALLY believe she took cocaine, and suffered a LQTS related event that was unfortunately fatal. This case has haunted my dreams, as crazy as that sounds- I’ve had a few extremely vivid dreams about her with her in it. I believe they panicked and hid her body. I had dreams of where she was showing me, and found pictures online of identical areas I saw in my dreams.
I finally did email years ago to her family acknowledging that it sounds insane (I never believed this stuff myself, but these dreams were recurrent, awful dreams that led to a defibrillator shock in my sleep one night). I cannot remember what the place was called now in my dream but it was white something and there was white bricks. There was a bridge, and something with tires. I profusely apologized to the family for bothering them with a dream. But after I finally sent that email to her family from her website, the dreams stopped. I’d have to look in my email to know when, but it was 5yrs ago at least. I still check for updates here and there but haven’t looked into it for a while.

I live in a college town and we were crowned the infamous biggest party college for a time as well. Just a couple states over. That was during my college days and it isn’t like that anymore around here, but it was wild when it was. We had so much fun and I met so many great people, but looking back there are sooo many things that could have went wrong. There were definitely some not great people among us at that time that we didn’t realize until many years later as actual adults when a couple of girls in my hometown were murdered. The world is just a scary place and it’s sad.

Chiming in from another heralded small college party town here (Chico, Ca). Chico state, student housing and all Greek houses are downtown. A few years back, a husband, father, and nurse at our local hospital would drive around downtown at night and pickup intoxicated college girls who were walking home alone night, drugging them and r*ping them in his car. His own wife figured it out when she found needles and restraints in his car, and she turned him in. It only takes one creep!

No judgment for the victims, but more and more of the True Crime videos’ victims have been drunk. I’m not blaming them, but I believe adults are not doing their job by warning young women of the dangers of drinking. Even when they think they are safe with friends so many times they are deserted by those friends. Sometimes because those friends are selfish, sometimes the friends are drinking themselves and don’t make wise decisions. It’s just so sad that so many young ladies lives are shortened by the overuse of alcohol.

We need to teach our children not to leave each other. Things happen and they should look out for one another, sadly with technology the way it is I don’t think people are as close or caring as they used to be.

    • @MelissaKM235

I agree. Alcohol is way too glamorized, especially to young adults. It can be dangerous being impaired. When it can affect your driving, your walking, your judgement…no victim ever deserves to be harmed, but we as a society need to stop acting like it’s fine to get totally drunk. If we care about our friends and our kids, why would we want them so drunk they end up passing out, falling, puking, etc.? I don’t understand it.

I wish there was some way to teach kids about responsible alcohol use before they go off to college. Just seems that so many of the disappearances and deaths of young people are connected to liquor. Despite the stigma, cannabis is rarely involved. Just sayin...
Heartfelt condolences to all involved with this case, especially Lauren's loved ones!

    • @cheritairby8049

To teach responsible alcohol consumption, we must first stop making its consumption so taboo. Here in the states we have to be 21 to consume any alcohol. In other countries, it’s normal for minors to consume alcohol. I’m not saying to let your child get drunk; however, a few sips of wine cooler, beer, or champagne shouldn’t be considered a crime. In my early 20’s I abused alcohol because I could finally consume it.

    • @motherofone979

I absolutely agree about cannabis. It's far less dangerous than alcohol. Also I do believe that we would have a better college scene if the alcohol age was lower. Perhaps, then we could create a culture where teens learned to drink responsibly at home. Now we have a culture where the first time people can legally drink is also the time where they are first living away from home and with a bunch of other young people. It's a recipe for chaos.

I have been following this case for a few years now. You did a great job with it! I like you am torn on different theories but I am leaning towards an overdose of drugs and alcohol and then panic from the one(s) that were present. No one wanted to get blamed so they or he got rid of the body. She was warned not to drink or take drugs by her doctor but she ignored that warning and got in the party scene and it seemed like it had to have played a big role in her disappearance. Once again great job with this story!

I'm honestly torn on this one. Unfortunately. as you said, Annie, I have a hard time believing a bunch of drunk 20 year olds weren't capable of hiding her body for 12+ years BUT they were drunk enough to hide her body long enough till they sobered up. Every parent deserves justice. I pray her parents receive it sooner than later.
