    Gapping is by far the one thing I see overlooked in everyone's bags. My frustration with lofts and lie being wrong led me down the road of owning my own bending bar and machine. I wish more fitters in my area offered a gapping session like this.

    spot on my 4 and 5 went basically the same distance so i dropped the 4 and put in a hybrid. didn't even consider strengthening lofts. But I had the same thing happen in gapping as Matt, I had a 20 yard gap between my 9 and 8 iron in the Z545. Another interesting thing that showed up was my 50 and 54 basically being the same so my 54 is now 57. So i go ping glide 2.0 50/57 and callaway mack daddy 59 degree. I have never played better golf than i am now and i have this channel to thank!

    I'm jealous... I wish I could get a session like this. I'm a newbie to golf and thought that each irons suppose to have 10-15 yards different. My 4 and 5 goes almost the same, 7 and 8 have 20 yards different and so I have been trying to fix my swing the past few weeks... damn it.
    Thanks for the great video as always.

    I like the idea of individual iron gapping, I asked my local big chain store to do something similar bc I am 2* flat in all my irons but feel my lower irons shouldn’t be as flat, and they told me I could pay for a custom fit again but they only do 7 iron. This video was great. Wish you guys were closer to where I live.

    This could be the most important video you have made so far. Sooo many crucial points covered here. I've always battled a tendency to deliver a high handle (toe down). Got a new sand wedge recently and an elite local coach (who coaches Cameron Smith) advised we keep the lie angle fairly standard and instead work on technique to get the dynamic lie neutral. It's the classic balance between "fitting for swing faults vs fixing swing faults", which I think would be a great video for Ian to cover.
    I use Z-745 irons and have noticed similar yardage gap problems. I hit the short-mid irons a very long way (8 iron carries about 172). I find the gaps are bigger between the short-mid irons than the long irons- I'd rather them be equal or slightly the other way around. The gap between PW (46*) and GW (51*) is close to 25 yards. Perhaps an effect of going from blade-style GW to muscle cavity PW. The key decision when tweaking yardage gaps is whether you weaken one club or strengthen the other, and how that affects the flow of the set all the way from driver to highest wedge... Which itself hinges on the loft of your highest wedge. It's a fun puzzle to solve and something Ian could cover in even more detail down the track.

    Ian's comment makes totally sense with my case regarding wedge lie angle tending to be flatter.
    I noticed that irons over draw, I observe the amount of this increase with shorter irons. It must be that my swings have changed and I hit my irons more solidly.
    What are the typical lie angle adjustment value relative to say 6 irons - eg. When 6 irons sre zero, 7 iron 0.25, 8 irons 0.5 deg, 9 iron 0.75, pitching wedge 1 deg etc, does it tend to work like this?
    I am sure checking with GC quad etc is the way to go but unfortunately I do not have an access to a good fitter around.
    Thank you.

    On Dave Tutelman's site there are his excellent insights on what he calls "gap drooping", ie the tendency for yardage gaps to get smaller in the longer clubs. Few players can generate the speed to realize the distance gaps between a modern 4 and 5 iron. Matt here has tonnes of speed so you can strengthen his 4 iron to say 20 degrees and he can still launch it. Another factor is the diminished quality of strike as the club gets longer. Even with theoretically perfectly gapped lofts, the average player will have an overlap with the longer irons due to inconsistent striking.

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  5 років тому

      Absolutely, which is where driving iron style clubs and hybrids can be very beneficial in adding consistency and creating usable gaps.

  • @oldgold5848

    I swing at 85 mph with the six iron, and have found I got my best gapping by going power loft spec i210 in 5 iron, standard in 6 and retro in 7 to wedge. The other benefit is that the retro loft wedge means with an additional 52 and 58 I am covered. I also carry a 17 degree four wood. So don't carry a 3 and 5......

    How did you end up choosing Apex CF16 for driving iron? Do you see something in it over the other options? What is the loft on that one? I have a set of those until 4 iron but went with a King 3 utility black since Apex has quite a bit of offset.

  • @957X99

    Great video as always! I am curious about the type of clubs suitable for gapping. Not every thing out there is forged. How much can a non-forged club be bent? Will it hold that shape as well as its manufactured angles?
    Is there an ideal gapping pattern? Matt's range seems to be 11-16 yds (using carry), Sean Clements' was 11-13 yds. Why not sub 10 yards in the wedges progressing to larger gaps in long irons?
    Do you use maximum effort or swing speed for gapping calibration or something less than max (maybe 80%)? Over 100 swings at maximum effort might be a bit much for some (not for Matt of course!). A round of golf at par will only have about 22 iron and 14 driver shots.
    Finally, would you suggest gap testing with 3/4 and 1/2 swings thru a set of irons?
    Thank you for sharing this invaluable information and expertise on this platform.

    How many shots do you usually look at to generate the data?
    Do you have a benchmark number for short/long shots that you discount from an average strike? If so does that figure change depending on the level of golfer and their own consistency?
    I watch quite a bit of different reviews from different sources and am quite new to yourselves but very impressed so far with the explanations you put across in an easy to understand manner. Top work gents.
    One last thing, any chance of a UK fitting tour????????

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  5 років тому

      Usually about 60-80 shots total during a session. Bad mishits or largely uncharacteristic shots will be disabled in the data so as not to skew the results in a direction that isn't representative of that player's shot pattern. We're hoping to do a UK some time visit next year!

    I've noticed Matt in this and other videos where his backswing has the shaft almost vertical(and sometimes just past vertical) and in some where he makes a fuller backswing where the club gets more parallel. Is this affecting his swing plane so it's more vertical on the downswing? I heard that's he's been working on his swing, but if he's making different length backswings, will it affect his gapping and lie angles? Your videos contain so much info. Great job.

    Question, how do you decide your gapping between your 4i for example and 3W. i have a large gap between the 2 and wondering if I should A. error on the larger club (3h hybrid for me) or B. go with something more consistent and a hair shorter (2i) or C. get a 4W? My gap between my 3W and 4i is ~40-50 yards. Maybe the answer is, don't have a 3W but then I get a gapping problem with my driver.
    Thoughts on how to approach this? go with the longer, not as confident club (3H, 230+ carry) or my more confident and consistent club (2i, 220 carry).

    • @fortheboyz773
      @fortheboyz773 3 роки тому

      oh and if the answer is, depends on what you use them for. I'll typically use them off the tee. Short par 4s that I don't want to be at a odd distance and tight fairways. My 2i stays on the course better where my 3H can go up to 240 and even 250 sometimes.

    Good to know that one needs to revisit ones set and even sometime temporarily tweak things like you suggested for Matt on the lie issue. As txg do you charge for follow up session? I ask only that one of the relatively ok fitters I have used provide one or even two one hour free follow up sessions over a period of 12-18 months post fitting as a clubs check cum review session or two. Clearly Matt being tall and much much younger (and wi5 a better swing) he is getting distances much longer than I am able to though working on my swing and flexibility and strength to bump mine up (and slowly beginning to make a difference). Two things to add. First that as a result clear that I need to revisit the gapping issue. But what I had not appreciated enough is that there might be club tweaks that may be necessary, including lie (as all my irons are also 2 flat and I do find that the high wedges -54,60 are not giving me the distance relative to my srixon iron set up to PW and the RTX 3 gap (50) wedge). Fortunately on my adjustable hybrids I have been able to achieve some of that because of the adjustability feature on them. Using something like swing caddie on the range which I do regularly (and recommend to others) is really helpful to identify some of these issues.

Most drivers have "bulge and roll" on the face, so the face actually bends outward slightly. Over time that "bulge" can flatten out, causing the driver to lose distance. Got fitted into a Mizuno ST190 and my distance came right back. Actually gained a few yards.

      @@benreno4414 Oh thanks. So it was a sudden drop for you. I guess a creeping decline would be a horror to me because I'd blame myself. LOL
      I still have a trusty Titleist 905T with a green Aldila shaft - I haven't found a better combo yet to justify buying something new.
      So I guess it's true and it can happen but I still would want to hear it from the horse's mouth i.e. Ian ;-)

      @@3rdgroove I had noticed slight drops over time, but usually attributed them to poor strikes. I really took notice when I felt like I made a good swing, but the strike felt awful and the distance wasn't there. If your driver hasn't had that flattening of the face, there's a very good chance you'll still see plenty of performance out of it. I only make changes to my equipment when there's a dramatic difference in results. Huge proponent of keeping equipment in the bag if it performs. No sense in paying for newer equipment simply because it's shiny haha.

    In your estimation, how long after getting fitted with new irons would you want to come back and do a gap session? When you notice something weird or after a certain amount of rounds with them? Thanks for the video, something I had not really thought about before.

      Just the average of the shots we used in this particular test, probably not 100% representative of the normal peak height on the 7 iron

  • @mozzarella3416

    Why didn’t you also test his fairway wood, both off the deck and off a tee, and the driving iron off a tee? Also, do you guys do putter fittings too? I’d be curious to see what Matt is putting with and how you fit him for that. Putter fittings get overlooked a lot - I know it’s not as sexy as driver reviews, but tour players spend a lot of time focused on getting that club just right. TXG would do the same it seems

    What is the source of Matt's swing speed? Is he tall (like Bubba?), With a similar frame? So smooth and efficient

    A small recommendation as a regular viewer of your videos.
    Your videos sometimes get too long. Unless the discussion is really interesting, someone will watch over 10 mins of the session. Maybe you can try to jazz up the discussion or shorten the video length to get more people to watch and stick to the videos.
    Thats just my opinion, maybe others love long videos.

      Anurag Sharma perhaps you’re not a regular viewer Anurag but our videos are normally around 15minutes. Our fitting video’s go longer because of the complexity of the subject. Like with any content though there will always be some people who enjoy it more than others. We are very conscious of mixing it up so we cater to all viewers. Appreciate the feedback though.
