Is Iron Workability a Myth?

  • txg.ca - We've all heard the common opinion that blades are more workable than cavity back irons, as in easier to draw, fade, hit high and hit low. But is that actually the case? We tested the Miura blades against the Mizuno JPX 900 hot metals in a workability comparison on the GC Quad launch monitor to find out!

    I fckn love these type of videos. There's so many misconceptions in golf usually from manufacturers marketing and old wives tales. This just shows you. John rahm for example abandoned blades and went for more forgiveness. Of course be can play beautifully with blades easily but look at his performance now. It's all about the golfer not the clubs. Learn to hit those shots and you can do it with any club.

    Found you guys a few weeks ago and absolutely love your content.As the father of a 16 year old female golfer from the UK with dreams of college golf in America your input on club fitting is priceless.She has been fitted for her Irons and driver at the beginning of the year, and is going for a wedge fitting when she finishes her GCSE's in 3 weeks and I am really looking forward to the session being armed with all the information I have learnt from you both so far.Fantastic stuff and please keep up the brilliant work.Perhaps be nice to see a female college student being fitted to give yet another dimension to the already great work you do

    The way I interpret workability is as simple as you get out what you put in to the golf shot. With a blade you’re not getting gear effect/flyers etc. which gives you more confidence to choose a shop shape and execute it, knowing that the result will be exactly what you put in.

    I've done a bit of my own testing over the winter with about 7 different 7 irons, with graphite shafts in stiff, xstiff as well as steel shafts in stiff and xstiff, with everything from Srixon z945's, z965, z765, to Titleist AP2's, MB's, and CB, and to be honest I was amazed at how much more similar they all were versus how much different.. I mean a bad swing on any club is still a bad swing.. great video's guys.. keep them coming!

    I've hit blades all my life. Tried CBs. For me it wasn't so much the workability, but the offset messed with my mind. Even more so was the sole and the interaction with the turf.

    Ian and Matt, I loved this video!!! I played Mizuno MP-32 blades for about 10 years in my 50’s, and they were my favorite clubs of all time.
    After turning 60, and two surgeries that kept me off the course for two seasons, I suddenly found the blades very inconsistent as well as two full club lengths shorter. I gave up my beloved blades and bought “game improvement” Titleist AP1’s.
    After struggling with those for 3 seasons, my son bought me a set of Mizuno JPX 900 Hot Metals in late December. They are the same clubs Matt hit so superbly in your test. While I am not nearly as proficient a ball striker as Matt, my game is coming back. I’ve played about a dozen rounds so far this year, and have recovered the lost distance completely. And just as Matt demonstrated, I am able to go low, high, right and left at will with these bigger heads. I feel like Mizuno has made miracle clubs in the JPX 900 HD’s as they gave me my game back. At 68, these irons should allow me to enjoy this wonderful game for another 10-12 years before riding off into the sunset.
    Keep up the great videos. I truly appreciate your knowledge, skill level and experience and I continue to learn so much about the game from every video you produce. Thank you!

      Could it be that you're improving because of increased time spent playing/practicing and not the clubs themselves?
      I'm btw. still playing Mizuno MP-30s for the same amount of years; am considering upgrading to a bit more bladed Mizuno (the MP SCs for 2018/2019 looks like they provide a more cavity back design than previous models, which doesn't appeal to me). I'm definitely going for a fitting session to assess if the shaft/lie/head combination still fits my swing properly.

    Another great test and video guys. I really like that you isolate the differences to the club head by using the same shaft, grip and player. I was of the belief that we needed to be in more of a blade to work/shape the ball, I am now educated in reality vice directed via myth. I still don't care for thick top lines and heavy, wide soles, but I wonder what options I might have explored differently had I known this before my recent fitting and purchase. Thanks for another great, educational video.

  • @randalllaframboise360
    @randalllaframboise360 6 років тому +1

    That was a great segment. I agree that the difference between blades and other clubs may be a matter of degrees. I play blades because I can expect consistency of flight and distance behaviour, all things being equal. When I used game improvement clubs, I got the occasional extra long strike that could not be explained. Blades demand a more refined approach, but with patience you'll get rewarded. The same can be said for game improvement irons of course, but the elements of practise and the amount one is willing to put in does factor in the decision making process. For those who are willing to play with "a matter of degrees", then the effort to learn how to use a blade club makes sense. But having a choice as to what you'll play and get the most enjoyment out of should be a major determinant overall, not a sliding scale of skill vs. enjoyment. Looking forward to more in future!

    A general thought on getting fitted for technical players (those that tend to analyze). Getting fitted for irons helped me reduce a great number of random thoughts about club selection and gear specifications in general (including ball flight and club performance on course). Knowing that each iron was fitted according to specific requirements (and measurements), all effort could be focused on improving the swing rather than questioning whether a specific outcome was caused by the "off the rack" set I was carrying at that time.
    We usually all start with an "off the rack" set, and while it was a good starting point, for me a major shift was after getting a proper fitting and working with irons that had the correct lie (3 degrees upright), a proper shaft (DG S300) and a forged Mizuno head (MP 30s). I'm sure a proper fitting made me want to practice more, but the feedback from the forged semi bladed iron helped me develop a better understanding of ball flight vs. strike. Going for a GI iron at that time probably wouldn't have helped me in this area.
    I was playing off approx hcp 20,0 prior to getting fitted and during the same season I made it to 8,5 (then stabilizing on hcp 10,0). Getting fitted was one of the best decisions I made playing golf at that time and I'm planning on a fitting session for a full bag for 2019.

    This is a good demonstration and something I’ve noticed with my own irons, as well. I’ve got some OLD Ping G-5s, but am able to shape them, usually, how I want. The one thing I’ll say is that it’s more difficult to learn how to shape shots, especially fades, with an offset iron. You just can’t tell what your doing versus what the club is giving you.
    Interesting comment on how head size gives folks more confidence. For me, I’ve been testing some different irons, and noticed that I have more confidence and better strikes on the smaller heads than on my own set with a larger head. Just don’t like the look of a large head.

    hey KillrobPlays, I agree with you. I have a set of old R7's .. for a long time I was on 28h/c.
    after getting serious about improving my swing, I set a target of 5 hc.
    It's been 4yrs and I'm now on about 9hc.
    I always said I'd reward my self with new irons when I get to 5hc but now I'm not so sure.
    I can shape my iron shots on call. Matt's more consistent. Anyway, on a day when the course and weather are not interfering my distance control is on point to. My 7iron will do 150m unless my swing is off on the day.
    So do I need a blades?
    I think for now I'm going to get new grips and add graphite, that will give me a buttery feel, or less jarring, I can almost convince my self I've got new clubs.

    Is it possible that more offset can actually increase a fade? I hit mostly a hold off cut with my irons. I’ve noticed the more offset on a club the more I actually fade it. I know offset typically influences a draw but I think for me when I’m holding off the face from rotating, that added offset keeps the face open longer and I hit a bigger cut.

    Great video that really shows off Matt's skill level. This video shows me that my own clubs, if I was to apply the correct swing, then I too should be able to move the ball both ways. Personally I struggle to play a fade. I can draw a ball very easily and it's pretty much my stock shot. When I do attempt a fade, it pretty much ends up a straight shot with the tiniest bit of fade. This gives me motivation to really work on my own technique knowing that my clubs are not a restriction to me moving them both ways. Thanks again for the great information guys. What about some comparison between overall weight and swing weight.....good example. I Played DG tour Issue s400 and DG sensicore for years in irons at d2 or d3 with good numbers. After trackman switched to Nippon Modus 120's but had best results with D6 in those. (was half a club longer with Modus) The DG were a bit more spinny......So obviosly the DG's are close to 130g vs 115g for Nippon so raw shaft weights pretty different. I could play d2 d3 in DG and it felt heavy enough but in modus 120 d2 would feel way too light......In those I would need d4 minimum to feel head well. It kinda makes sense because adding 2 or 3 sw points to lighter shaft gets the overall weights closer.

Maybe it depends the players problems.

    Hey guys, I can't thank you enough for putting these videos out. I had my first fitting this weekend and if it wasn't for your videos I would have come out of it with completely wrong clubs.
    My question: I am a 14 handicapper plagued with chronic low flight/long runout. I should be a perfect candidate for game improvement irons to help get the ball up, but every game improvement I hit went low and away from my body. The fitter accidentally handed me an AP2 and I hit it higher and straighter than anything else with perfect spin rate, the fitter was shocked. In the end I ordered AP3's, but historically I hit blades better than any other club even though I should not be good enough for blades. The last thing he did was measure my lie angle and found out that I need need the clubs bent 1 degree flat. Do you think that the thicker soles of a game improvement iron catch the mat more in the heel turning down the lie/launch angle resulting in lower flight? After the fitting I'm having second thoughts, wishing I had a chance to try irons with the correct lie before making my order

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 років тому

      A wider sole may not suit your swing David, turf interaction can be a huge factor for some players. Sounds like a more narrow sole iron with weaker lofts would be best for you.

  • @KillrobPlays
    @KillrobPlays 6 років тому +4

    This was great, excellent comparison and intriguing result! One thought I would like to put forward here is that I would expect the bigger, more forgiving cavity back irons to be more easily shaped than blades for the elusive "average golfer". That is because shot shaping usually for that type of golfer is not the norm but something special, meaning that these slight deliberate tweaks to swing plane and face angle will cause strike location to vary more than for someone like Matt, who hit really solid shots.
    What good does shot-shaping do for "the average golfer" if it causes you to have a larger chance to miss-hit and thus lose 20y and drop into the hazard? (cavity backs being more resistant to speed loss on miss-hits) This is why I would proclaim that seeing these results in your video, for every golfer not playing or ~5 or better, cavity backs actually are superior for shot shaping. :) What do you think?

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 років тому

      Deliberately shaping shots definitely isn't likely to help a higher handicap player lower their scores, would agree with your assessment for sure.

    Another one knocked out of the park guys! Matt - I envy your swing capabilities :) - great to have you as a swing model since your strike consistency minimizes question around quality of strike impacting the results. I have not had much issues working cavity backs and always bristled somewhat when I would always hear that they are not workable. You guys did an awesome job debunking the myth! Question - do the new design characteristics of the latest round of game improvement irons (e.g. G400 - not super gamers) enhance their workability? With lower lofts, higher launch and lower spin, they arrive to the same distance in a different manner than blades and prior game improvement irons. How much, if any, impact does that have in your estimation?

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 років тому +1

      Good question Anthony - generally speaking a club that produces lower spin (backspin) is easier to shape left and right. So as you say that may be a factor considering the design of modern game improvement irons. Maybe 5-10 years ago when game improvement irons spun a lot more, the workability difference would be larger between those and blades. Good thought!

    Great video as usual. Sure seems like almost any club can be fitted to you if you like it. Question: When you bend clubs for loft do you feel turf interaction changes. Would you prefer to deloft or add loft?

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 років тому +1

      You have to be careful of adding or taking away too much loft, as loft directly affect bounce angle. So bending stronger removes the equal amount of bounce angle, and vice versa for bending loft weaker. Changes in bounce would absolutely change turf interaction, but at 1-2º probably not too noticeable for most.

    Fantastic video. I try telling everyone that you can shape any iron so don’t be so locked into a blade mentality to work the ball. If there ever is an iron that can’t be shaped golf would be to easy, the magic club would never spin offline, too high or too low; just the perfect trajectory every shot dead straight.

      Graphite helps a lot of players, especially anyone struggling with sore joints (elbow, often). See if you can get a single iron that is graphite shafted and try a few practice sessions!

    This makes perfect sense. Swing path versus face angle and dynamic loft is king. Physics rules !
    I have a couple of different sets. The reason I find the blade easier to shape is that it’s so “square “ . Witch makes it’s easier to see were the face is pointing.... versus my swing direction.

    Another great video. Would love to see Matt hit my ancient Golden Bear x'd out irons from 1978 ( lol). Matt you can box your miss hits . My birthday is coming soon.
    As for the Miura vs Mizuno what is the mass total difference between the two? Is the Miura a lighter head? Delivering more total mass with lower CG on the same shaft would produce more centrifical force, speed, and higher launch no, or is the mass the same for both and cg/offset the big variable? I could see as a higher handicap player that feel of delivering the Mizuno would encourage less effort and better tempo. Thanks. J.

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 років тому

      According to online specs, the Mizuno should be about 4-5 grams heavier. Now we didn't measure the exact heads we used for this test, so that may not be accurate. But a good thought regardless Jeremy, that could be a factor for sure.

    Any reason to think that a head like the G400 might be less workable than the Hot Metal because it has a bit more offset, or should it be about the same?

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 років тому

      Likely looking at a negligible difference at that point. Depends on the player but I doubt you'd see much difference in workability.

  • @garythompson9439
    @garythompson9439 6 років тому

    Interesting to see there was very little difference in these clubs flight profiles but I would suggest it's more the wizard than the wand...big upside to seeing larger cavity back irons provide workability and forgiveness (long as you can get past your egos and be open minded to the debate of function over form). Being a mid-flight drawer of the ball with very weak lofted small cavity back irons (35* 7 iron) I do wonder about the benefits of switching to a larger/stronger lofted iron and utilizing their higher ball speed/launch angle numbers.
    Maybe a video on shaft flex ? I've tried reg, stiff, x-stiff in woods and irons and found there's standard for these ratings across manufacturers.
    Great video as always gents...A++

    I am using G400 irons and I’ve considered weakening the lofts. In fitting strong loft irons is it common to do this or should I just leave it alone and just hit a 8 iron instead of the 7.

      If you need a bit more spin and launch, then weakening the lofts is a good option.

      Without the offset...what would be "game improvement" about them? Please correct me if I'm wrong...but it's my understanding that the offset is designed to "cure" a slice. Which...of course...is what the average high handicapper does with his irons. This is likely why good players tend to overdraw GI irons.

    • @johnnypenso9574
      @johnnypenso9574 6 років тому

      The offset is only part of the game improvement nature of GI clubs. The wider sole, perimeter weighting, lower CofG, thinner, larger face and offset all combine to make the clubs, in theory, more forgiving and easier to hit. The primary purpose of offset is to move the CofG away from the shaft which promotes a higher ball flight. The secondary and lessor benefit is it may help a tiny bit to improve a slice or face as it gives a tiny increase in the amount of time available to square the club at impact. The effect is so small as to be almost unnoticable.
      As someone who grew up playing blades and played blades with no offset for 30 years I just don't like the look of an offset iron head. I hit the ball straight and high enough so I don't need the offset to help me with that aspect of my ballstriking but I would like to enjoy the rest of the benefits of GI clubs.

    • @Master...deBater
      @Master...deBater 6 років тому +1

      Yeah...I suppose you're right. I guess I usually think of offset as being the most pronounced feature of GI irons. For instance...I have a set of Cleveland Tour Action 3, small cavity back irons, with no offset. No one would ever consider them GI irons...even though they're perimeter weighted. I own several sets of blades from modern to hickory shafted. Some are muscle-back (Wilson FG-59), some have a wide flanged sole (MacGregor heritage), (Wm. Gibson Scotland)...etc...all of which have a different CoG. My MacGregor flanged sole (low CoG) blades, produce a higher ball flight than my FG-59 muscleback (higher CoG) blades.
      I guess my point is...perimeter weighting, and the moving of CoG have been around for a long time. What's new is the offset...and of course the advanced materials. Most major companies do offer a small cavity back iron with virtually no offset...the Titleist 718-CB comes to mind. These types of "players" clubs are more forgiving than blades...but aren't gaudy, and full of plastic garbage like the GI club heads tend to be. Anyway...thanks for the reply.

    brilliant video... I would have thought Matty (even as talented as he is) would have had trouble shaping the cavity to a far greater degree than he did in actuality... being a player who plays split cavities and blades (mizuno mp58s and mp32s) and who enjoys shaping the ball (especially flighting it into a lower window given that I'm a high ball hitter playing in Oklahoma) this was a very enlightening video... a more forgiving iron doesn't necessarily handicap my ability to shape the golf ball... thanks boys!

    I honestly thought that it would have played out this way. There is only so much a club can do. Every shaped iron head i have hit has given the result of the swing i have put on it. From what i can tell from my own experiences is that a hit small irons better and feel more comfortable with the way look and perform. I hit chunky clubs heavy, a lot!! I always thought it was just me but i have come to realise it is iron head shape. And going over turf interaction and droop ect on this channel just highlights my findings and proves it's not just me. I have a quick swing and prefer things that my handicap may not reflect, and some fitters completely disagree with those thoughts and i have disagreed with some and try to explain what i have found in the past. And sure enough, i have proven to some of them haha. There have been a couple of great fitters too, wich i have really enjoyed spending time with. You can really tell who knows about being a good fitter and who doesn't. I myself would love to be a fitter. I'm in a state where we only have a few manufacturer fittings in a year, no fitting centres at all. Plane flight to the closest place.

    I really like this video and it sort of confirms my hunch. I don't have cavity irons but I've played them, and I can slice them just as easily as my regular clubs if I try. Ive figured that if you can slice a club you can fade it. As a mid handicapper I have to work a lot harder to hit my srixons straight than I do my buddy's pings. Like, a lot harder.

    Great stuff on fitting! However, could you change the GCQ software to displaying the club for a left hander. I am not sure that I follow the path and face numbers correctly. Is a 5 degree in to out for a lefthander actually out to in? Again thanks for your terrific videos.

      It can in some iron designs, certain manufacturers will use a cast face to try to up the ball speed a bit. Individual results would vary though, over a large sample size it might not show a big difference.

    I'm a low double digit or high single digit handicapper and I haven't found hitting a draw or fade too difficult with my normal gamer which is a Mizuno JPX 921 Tour or my "for fun" clubs Ping Eye 2. What I have noticed is intentionally hitting higher or lower shots is a little more challenging on the Ping Eye 2 than the Mizunos. Just my thoughts and experiences.

    A vid wich proves that the ball doesn't know if it is hit with a blade or CB iron, just reacts to speed and angles. Just received my TM P790, wich are CB's though disguized as blades. Now played 4 rounds with them, 2 on windy links right on the chanel (Wimereux and La Touquet la Mer) and 2 slight more inland but still in the dunes (Hardelot). High and low and draws no problem, spin a bit low and fading is a challenge. Maybe because of the tungsten in the toe?
    question: i have the impression that 1 shaft is reacting different than the other ones. could that be because of manufactering tolerances? feels a bit weaker (UST recoil 780 F4 stock shaft)

    Here’s a thought: if you had left the lofts at their factory setting, that would potentially make the 919 easier to shape because it would be stronger and backspin negates sidespin. The problem with this premise though is of course that to travel the same distance you would then have to club down with the 919 which would then increase the loft and you would be back to square one. And so the argument rages on! I think you just have to use what looks and feels the best for you.

    So the Mizuno goes faster, higher, further, with more spin, and a steeper angle, while offering nearly the same workability... Basically, the only advantage of a blade is purely distance control, which I completely understand, but the ball data actually had the Mizuno's with a lower STD Deviation. I bet Matt will want to take a good hard look at the JPX Forged and/or Tours now.

      The Mizuno's performed very very well. Just as we wouldn't want higher handicap players to dismiss smaller iron designs, we've also found that better players shouldn't dismiss a larger cavity design. Good observation.
