    It was nice to see all of the core samples being sent of to a lab in Germany and hear about the density of professionals looking at the situation. Finally able to see that the boat is getting the attention it needs.🐬👍

    If a motor-car manufacturer made a car chassis with so many flaws and weaknesses there would be a General recall of all vehicles. Hopefully your boats manufacturer is assisting you to rectify these flaws. I wonder how many other production vessels have the same problems? Whatever happened to quality control in their production process? Thanks for showing us these flaws and I wish you luck with the repairs. Thank God you found these before you risk an Ocean Crossing trusting your lives to the integrity of Hull strength.

    So far things are looking good, the repair work has started. It will be exciting to see the progress and how they approach the lamination. The key to this project is to build it better/ stronger than originally.

    Wow! Those cores are very revealing, and as an engineer very concerning. However it is heart warming to see the insurance company steeping up. In some respects, this has been a lucky happenstance. If you had continued on without rectifying this defect you could have been in very serious trouble. I guess the boatyard has had a breath of relief and your relationship with them improved. Keep up the good work. I see this as a very interesting project.

    Have you thought about contacting the boat manufacturer and asking if they would like to buy the boat back from you for their own R&D. It’s big money to you but small to them and it would make the whole issue disappear. You could then offer to buy a new boat from them which you would have a surveyor examine every stage of the build.

    On the plus side... Making friends with the season's group and having to stay behind, means next year, you will know twice as many people... I like the idea of laying up glass over all the stingers to thicken the continuity of the keel bed construction... Tying in the stringers to the hull in a reinforced mat. As should have been the case at manufacture...

    Very interesting that your insurance company ordered cores for analysis. That may be your insurance company getting proof that there were significant manufacturing defects in order to go after Grand Soleil for liability.

    You guys are so lucky that your keel did let go whilst you were at sea during the night in a blow. You’ve used one of your 9 cat lives. Most modern production boats are built like this there good for costal cruising but for me ocean sailing you need something more robust, I’ve owned a William Atkin 32 Eric which I would happily sail around the globe a 46 Robert’s with encapsulated keel safe as houses and a 35 foot trimaran which was very robust but not a globe trotter and I’d put most French production boats in that category. Most will make it across oceans but I wouldn’t personally risk it. On a plus side your boat when repaired should be good and stronger than ever and ready to take you wherever you wish to go. Good luck with the repairs and stay positive the tropics are worth the wait👍

    I'm a pretty new follower of your channel. If i understand it well, the problem with your boat was already there when you bought it? Must be such a dissapoitment to find out this situation. So happy for you guys to hear that the insurance wants to pay the repairs. Of course the insurance company can not fix your "mental dammage". But as far as i can see and understand this will turn out good as well with all the support from friends and followers throughout this channel. The good thing is, your beautifull boat will be stronger then ever after the repairs!! So next year it will be you guys who prepares to make the crossing ;-).

      A warm welcome to you! We're glad you're here. The cause of the damage has not yet been fully clarified (at least we didn't have a basic report) and we can't talk about it at the moment as we are still in the middle of the process.
      It has also not yet been finally clarified who will pay the costs, but our insurance company was very supportive at the beginning.

    Do you have a written scope of the repairs to be carried out and a written technical specification to which the repairs are to be completed. Who will ensure that the repairs are being carried out in accordance with the scope and the specification. Who will sign-off the repairs when complete. Please keep a full and detailed description and log of the repair process. At least now you can witness progress. Be sceptical and diligent.

    Would suggest your surveyor tapping all over your hull and marking spots to drill, you are looking for dry fibre. As my friend said if you have dry fibre around the keel then its probable its all over. A lot of companies used to farm out the hull construction and keel construction, contract construction is shady at the best. Just an observation.

    So now progress has started to move in the right direction and repairs are being made. One question l have is who is responsible for installing the cabin floor that looks like to get it out it got torn to pieces and broke in many areas once the repairs are made? I mean it didn't look like most of the floor came out without it being ripped into many pieces. Just curious. Also, where is the boat now, what country? I enjoy following you guys on this journey of yours. I'm here in Detroit winterizing and shrinkwrapping boats for the winter. Ugh....😊

      Thanks for your comment. The floor is as supplied by the manufacturer but the white one is only the substructure.
      The boat is currently in the Canary Islands.

    Finally you may have been lucky to break your boat just before crossing the Atlantic! Who knows?
    Because in the end the repairs should consolidate the manufacturing defects of Grand Soleil! Because when I see the difference in height of the spar between the Beneteau "Expedition Evans" and your Grand Soleil it's just crazy! On the Beneteau the height of the spars reaches almost to your knees without counting that they are transverse.
    In the end it may not be logical that your boat broke like that and so much the better that it is consolidated now so that you can live your adventures with complete peace of mind!😉

    Is there any come back on the origianl boat builder as it appears to me that apart from that lack of strenght in the keel area there is also a huge delamination issue. After the fix it will certianly be a lot stronger. Maybe you should consider adding some for and aft timbers, I certainly would as now is the time to do it. Check out Ran 3 build on his keel grid set up. Good luck and keep smiling.

    Grind to bare fiberglass both hull and stringers. You then fiberglass together, much stronger than original bonding. She'll be stronger

    These moulded "Egg Crate" structural Grids are a sound idea in principle but they really need to be glassed onto the hull at the flanges of the Girders. Bonding on its own seems to lack durability as seemingly any abnormal load risks fracture of the bond. I can see why the production yards might consider that too expensive so maybe it could be an option for customers who want the "Belts N Braces" package

    Hallo Ihr Beiden, ich bin etwas beruhigt zu sehen, wie die Fachleute vorgehen. - Die Stringer scheinen wirklilch nicht mehr fest mit der Schale verbunden zu sein. Nur verkleben wird niemals ausreichen, die Stringer müssten massiv mit Kohlestofffasern verstärkt überlaminiert werden, somit würden die Kräfte breiter in die Schale übertragen. Den Torrsion, Biegungen, Stauchungen sind alle bei hartem Wind und Wellen ständig am arbeiten. -Alle diese Kräfte wirken auf die Stringer und die Strongback des Riggs. Auch diese sollten bis in die Kielsektion kraftschlüssig verbunden werden. Eine riesen Arbeit, aber es führt kein Weg daran vorbei, wenn dieses Schiff wieder auch Hochsee gehen soll. Eigentlich erstellt ihr jetzt das, was die Prado-Werft beim Bau hätte tun sollen. Aber eben, die waren finanziell unter grossem Druch und darum wurde gespart wo man immer konnte. Viel Glück wünsche ich Euch.

    Hm - have an accommodation for a month?
    For your own mental sanity - estimate the time the repair lasts, add some time and book an accommodation for that time so you don't have to spend additional work in moving again.

      In which way have you approached your search for accomodation? There is loads of different ways.
      One way is what every well-travelled foreigner does: looking on internet for what is available.
      In southern Europe family is still a concern for everyone and one is helping the other. It might be an idea to ask the owner of the grocery shop around the corner if he knows someone who knows someone. The gas station, the bakery, the Marineiros of your yard if they have an idea - they live there and most probably for a long time. Going "local" usually brings up heaps of possibilities.
      I know since COVID-19 many blackboards in supermarkets disappeared never to be reinstalled again. But maybe the supermarket next to you still has one? If so, get a note on it!
      In this context it would be extremely useful if you had a Spanish sim-card in one of your phones. Most phones these days come with slots for 2 sim-cards, and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg having a pay as you go sim card.
      People in southern countries hesitate to call a foreign number as it means costs for them. Contrary to this, calling a Spanish number isn't a big deal and usually covered by their tariff anyway.
      I've made it usual procedure for myself whenever I arrived in a country to get me a local sim card. It makes a huge difference in anything about being there.

      @@patandfrankie Me too. If they are self employed maybe, but as Christmas and New Year are in the middle of the week, you will probably experience the infamous “puente” week. The 24th is the most important family get together day of the year when EVERYTHING closes early, and Monday 6th is equivalent to our Christmas Day, so nobody will turn up to work. On Tuesday 7th and Wednesday 8th things will / may start getting back to normal.

    It seems to me that there are far too many problems of lamination. Maybe you should be counting how much of the hull is actually secure. You really needed to cross the Atlantic with your friend who has now left. That would have given you a safety factor that you should have. The Atlantic is a big lonely stretch of water, and is well capable of destroying a well built boat, but yours....needs special attention to safety. I cannot stress the need for "backup" - No communication system should be the only one of it's kind, double up on everything.

    It's actually a shame if you have to build a boat again because the quality is so bad. The shipyard would have to pay you something so that you don't post these insights online. For me that would be at most a coastal yacht and not an ocean-going ship. The boat is probably more solid after the repair than when it was new...

    Bueno, parece que este barco francés está mal construído, esta es la parte negativa, lo que también será negativo es que seguramente de Beneteau no podréis esperar nada, son franceses, claro, lo positivo es que una vez reparado será 100 veces más seguro que como lo era originalmente.
    Canclusión, no compréis barcos franceses.
    Os sigo desde el principuo y espero con ansidad que empecéis las reparaciones, solo con empezar ya notaréis un alivio psicológico, porque lo siguiente será terminar. Muchos ánimos.

    Lack of bonding, "Not uncommon on many boats." True enough of plastic production boats and boats built without quality as the primary concern. It is clear from both the damage and your investigation that this boat was not built to a high standard. In fact it was built to a very low standard as evidenced by the use of a putty to "bond" the grid in place. I wish you well, but your best course is to take the insurance money and find another boat. Hopefully, one properly built.

      "use of a putty to "bond" the grid in place" - all production boats are built using this method. All Beneteau, Bavaria, Hanse, Moody, Dehler, Grand Soleil, Junneau etc. All of them. It's very possible to buy a boat not built like this, but of course they are much more expensive to build, so they are much more expensive to buy. I often have clients who insist that a "blue water" boat is about a long keel and heavy displacement. In my view it's about having a robustly constructed hull, keel, rudder, decks and rig together with fewer berths, more & better storage, bigger tanks and features like bigger chainlocker, bigger bow roller, watertight bulkheads, emergency rudder etc. None of this need take away from performance: I like a fin keel and spade rudder, just not the production boat version. I commonly do over 200 miles a day. Speed & performance make the boat safer, but it needs to go hand in hand with construction that's fit for purpose. I have crossed oceans many times in boats built like this GS. Hopefully I won't ever do that again.

    Sprecht doch einfach Deutsch, oder denkt ihr, die Amis sind dann eure Zukunft und ihr müsst schon mal üben? Ihr müsst Euch nicht anbiedern, das gehört einfach sich nicht und ihr macht euch dabei nur unglaubwürdig, weil unauthentisch. Blendet doch einfach einen englischen Untertitel, den ihr mit KI generieren lasst, unter dem Clip für die Diejenigen ein, die der deutschen Sprache nicht mächtig sind und die das Geschehen wirklich interessiert.       Wir sind in einem internationalen Umfeld unterwegs und da möchten wir eine internationale Sprache sprechen/nutzen.

      Im Vergleich zu der Unzahl an Menschen die an Land leben ist die Cruising-community (Menschen die an Bord ihrer Schiffe leben und damit unterwegs sind) winzig.
      Wo auch immer man ankommt , trifft man Segler aus aller Herren Laender. English, als die am einfachsten erlernbare Sprache, ist weltweit der Standard um mit anderen zu kommunizieren.
      Da wir auf einander Ruecksicht nehmen wird selbst dann untereinander English gesprochen wenn zufaellig die meisten aus dem gleichen Land kommen - damit die in dem Fall wenigen anderen ganz natuerlich teilhaben koennen.

    What a shitty boat!! I thought that Grand Soleil were really high quality well built boats, but man! Layers not fully bonded is really a defects of fabrication … terrible! You are very unlucky … wish you all the best and to recover soon

      depends on the construction year. We own a Grand Soleil 52 built in 1990. This boat is super strong and well built. We are sailing the south pacific where sea condition are pretty rough. We trust our boat. All the shipyards are facing quality problems (just have a look to various youtube channel about brand new catamarans). I wish the best to Pat and Frankie for the next stepof the repairs. See you maybe at sea.
