We are conscious of the subjective aspects that infuse judgments in professional surfing contests. While this subjectivity brings a certain dynamism and richness to the sport, it can also lead to disputes and disagreements. Thus, to provide a greater degree of objectivity, fairness, and most crucially, UNBIASED evaluations, it's crucial to strive for a greater degree of transparency, especially when judgments are questioned due to subjective interpretations. Promoting transparency isn't merely a goal, it's about implementing clear, definitive measures to elucidate the path of judgment, ensuring it is based on performance and not influenced by the surfer's nationality. By shedding light on these procedures, we foster a better understanding, trust, and appreciation within our surfing community. Furthermore, it's paramount that the W$L articulates a clear vision for the future of surfing. Will it be a nostalgic return to the aesthetic principles of the 80s, or are we charting a course towards pushing boundaries with groundbreaking maneuvers? Defining this vision will not only guide competitors but also stimulate the growth of the sport in the intended direction. Carl Sagan once said that extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence. In keeping with the spirit of Carl Sagan's principle, we need to ensure that our extraordinary claim of fairness and unbiased judgment in professional surfing is supported by extraordinary evidence of transparency and clarity. It's not just about safeguarding the integrity of the sport, but also about nurturing its future in a manner that harmoniously blends respect for tradition with a passion for innovation.
@@jbrd2959 Easy. Since you asked for evidence: "Italo’s 6.77 for a huge rotation going left (one of the best we’ve seen all year) was vastly underscored. You could not make that air more dynamic or land it cleaner. How far did he travel through the air? Ten feet? Fifteen? And he followed it with a seamless transition into a clean wrap that judges go weak at the knees for when Ewing does it. This scoring should be interrogated." "Ewing’s carving wraps are pretty, but they’re not risky enough. His 8.07 was scandalously over-scored [AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN!!!]. The tweak he puts at the end of his top turn flatters to deceive. There’s a twitch in his bottom turn that seems to be ignored because of pleasing arm placement." Well the tour has lost its soul. May have dream locations but I’d rather watch Rasta, Machado, Kersy, Asher et al riding alternative equipment with style and grace. This is what the best surfers have in buckets 🤙
WSL was invented for the Corporations... The essence of surfing was lost... Boring at best.... Should reinvent and hold it only on the north shore over a winter....
The judges should start breaking down how there getting the scores where the points are actually coming from whether that’s the number of turns or critical maneuvers or a barrel ride. Just break it down.
All the professional surfers lost their souls, when they started surfing for money, not pure enjoyment. Same goes for those who don’t share the waves and think it’s a gladiator sport. Greed will always take you down into darkness.
While some sports are judged by a panel of judges, the judges themselves are obviously human and are subject to prejudice. That’s why the highest and lowest scores are thrown out. It still seems that Ausies have an edge in Australia, Brazilians in Brazil , Hawaiians in Hawaii etc. Like it or not subjective meets objective in every competition. All surfers on the pro tour have proven themselves to deserve to be there,,, any one of them are capable of winning their heat at any time. Sometimes the ocean doesn’t deliver when expected. Oh well. While I’m sometimes at odds with the judges I still enjoy the overall experience of watching the best in the world compete in real time all over the planet. I have to give WSL credit for their efforts to bring this to us in real time. That wasn’t possible not all that long ago. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth ,,, relax, enjoy catch a wave !!! Don’t sweat the petty 😀🤙,,, death threats!!?!?really!?!?! Obviously mental illness has entered the arena 😳
The recent 9 fliepe got in the el salvador finals was way to high. It was a great wave but way overscored, 3 snaps Is not worthy of a 9. Judges need to fix there stuff.
Agreed!! But the 7,17 that they gave first to Griffin was way to high, and Filipe’s wave was much better!! I think that’s why Filipe got such high score.
I just cant watch it anymore. So many outstanding surfers with talented camera crews, with great sound tracks and the best waves in the world doing awe inspiing vlogs with soul and humility. Why would I?
Air comps died out over two decades ago because they were boring the wsl will suffer the same fate if they keep giving excellent scores for a one trick wave...
With the amount of camera footage and angles available now, everyone can judge for themselves. Social media has countless videos of every competition. Full replays are available at the press of a button.
Im not surprised about this at all. Have you ever surfed with Brazilians?? Well if you had you would not be surprised either hahaha, only takes one angry Brazilian to wreck a lineup, why not try and wrecks the WSL too.
History shows that Brazilians' have at numerous times been overscored to gain market share. If you want over 40's / 50's market share, then overscoring a single air over power, grace and flair isn't going to wash. Making death threats, well... maybe Brazil should be sanctioned until they can clean up their act. Remember that loser storming the tower... nice sportsmanship champ... where was he from? Maybe Brazil should have a breakaway tour... run by Brazilians', judged by Brazilians', for Brazilians' and paid for by Brazilians'.
The Brazilian surfers and fans know nothing about the spirit of surfing. Medina has won 3 titles, he's got nothing to whinge about, He is the Trump of surfing.
Just be consistent. Obviously judges will have their favourites, even the Brazilian ones, but some of the scores have been ridiculous. Some people get way too upset about other grown adults and let it ruin their day.

What do you want? A sport with sportive behavior or competitions supported by commercial interests.I rather watch some expression sessions or freesurfers vid's. Whats with the wax intellectual comments these days. If youre gonna be smart about surfing, then acknowledge that its parameters for judging lack definition due to the nature of the sport. Its not like watching a football or basketball game and it never will be. On top of that, the ranch isnt even a wave compared to open ocean surfing as the water buoyancy is different and the movement of the water under the board is not like the ocean. Im not surprised at all that the judging for the ranch is exposing the long existing holes in judging. Nothing is new here except the fact that people think wave pools and open ocean surfing are the same. THEY ARE NOT and i will die on this hilltop.
The judges need to move on from the old skool days and get with the new program 🇦🇺 like if a surfer can get barrelled, switch foot hand downs, winner straight up.
Assuming all 5 judges different nationalities and then the top and bottom score dropped and the final score the medium of the middle 3. How can it be bias 🤔
Medina should just start another Tour with those who are not happy and use the new criteria. The WSL is just a business so go start another one with a slightly different name. Just look at boxing.
I totally understand how the most well known surfers (for good reason) keep the sport alive in media and money. But its what you do with the $ that is a problem; how you run the org. Saquarema crowd soccer hooliganism is lame and shouldn't be rationalized. That is not the spirit of surfing. Go woke go broke; says a lot. Also Medina's message isn't clear... is he pushing for more radical acro surfing? Seamless transitions sound good to me.
Competitive surfing is by its nature is lame. Only try hard spastic style is rewarded. Example: beating a section with a long floater is scored lower than throwing up a big hack and loosing the wave.

Since you asked for evidence:
"Italo’s 6.77 for a huge rotation going left (one of the best we’ve seen all year) was vastly underscored. You could not make that air more dynamic or land it cleaner. How far did he travel through the air? Ten feet? Fifteen? And he followed it with a seamless transition into a clean wrap that judges go weak at the knees for when Ewing does it. This scoring should be interrogated."
"Ewing’s carving wraps are pretty, but they’re not risky enough. His 8.07 was scandalously over-scored [AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN!!!]. The tweak he puts at the end of his top turn flatters to deceive. There’s a twitch in his bottom turn that seems to be ignored because of pleasing arm placement."

In part, I agree . The surfers will obviously surf to what the judges are looking for . The real essence is to get rid of subjectivity . Red Bull Diving, each judge focuses on a seperate component of the execution . This is the answer .
WSL is killing the golden goose.Far too much US corporate vibe . Too much “product” not enough spirit of surfing and competition
Kelly should be head judge/ceo or start his own league
Ethan is the best surfer in the world at the moment.
He have the most perfect style. Amazing for the 80s and 90s. He could beat occy or curren, but today's surf is more than just style. In my opinion, He's worst version of JJF or Gabe.
Yep he's the epitomy of what surfing should be and look like. Smooth , legs are close together and in control. Just like a ballet dancer ,total control of his body.
@@julieoliver8170 you just replied to yourself in agreement to your own comment…..wow!
Lol, added ....
@@drmarcosmancini no one surfed like that in the 80's 90's or even now, JJF can match him, but the lines he draws are ridicules , mind you griffin and Toledo know how it's done also.
Make a new Brazzo league and they would still complain about the judging. What nobody wants to really say is that style does play a part into the judging and none of these guys except Yago have it.
Ya I would say the Same. Yago moved to Hawaii to get that style.
The last 4 world men's champs and the Olympic gold medalist are all Brazilian, with this year's number 1 also being from Brazil. Cry when you win, cry when you lose.
Also, whoever thought it was a good idea to drop Cloubreak and add the surf ranch either doesn't surf or has their priorities all fked up.
But the Brazilians gets the most over scores….
Well the tour has lost its soul.
Greed will always take you down into darkness.
the language in this monologue is excessively grandiose. went overboard boss
We appreciate this feedback! In what tone would you prefer?
dial it down a bit. that was level 12
Thank you, CWR! We will apply this feedback in future content.
@@surf_360 4:19 who is surfing in this red jersey?
@botaccount3449 Unfortunately this surfer is unrecognizable for us to mention.
CEO Eric Logan has to GO!!
Agreed!! I have no idea how he still CEO!
Where are the judges from?
The recent 9 fliepe got in the el salvador finals was way to high. It was a great wave but way overscored, 3 snaps Is not worthy of a 9. Judges need to fix there stuff.
Agreed!! But the 7,17 that they gave first to Griffin was way to high, and Filipe’s wave was much better!! I think that’s why Filipe got such high score.
I thought the same! When I saw that score come in I flashbacked to his baby tantrum at Bells over Baker's 9.
Dope channel bro , worthy sub 🙌🏾
Appreciate that
I just cant watch it anymore.
Ask Naacar how it's worked out for them. They completely took the spirit out that sport!
Call is the WSL. Wide Stance League
The Brazilian surfers and fans know nothing about the spirit of surfing. Medina has won 3 titles, he's got nothing to whinge about, He is the Trump of surfing.
That’s a compliment! Trump 2024 Medina 2024! 😊❤
Just be consistent. Obviously judges will have their favourites, even the Brazilian ones, but some of the scores have been ridiculous. Some people get way too upset about other grown adults and let it ruin their day.
I was unable to watch years ago it turned into the Woke Tour
The WSL recently announced it would be adopting the International Surfing Association (ISA) policy on transgender participation, which requires trans-female athletes to maintain a testosterone level of less than five nmol/L for at least 12 months in order to compete in the women's division.Feb
Clown world
Where are all the trans-male surfers at? Oh yeah right there aren't any cause they would get annihilated. Like the guy above me said. "Clown World".
There's one already waiting . If this happens , I will never watch ever again . Funkin worlds gone crazy . Get rid of Eric Logan as soon as possible
@@cjgamer2140 leave it to women to allow men into women’s sports lol
Why Eric Logan was not fired yet? This guy has no condition to run any corporation! That response to Medina post was just ridiculous!
WWSL- world wrestling surf league, where the outcome is scripted from the start.
The threat to Ethan Ewing came from a fake profile. Could it be a kind of fake "alibi" to WSL?
would you expect someone making that type of threat doing it from his main profile???
Competitive surfing is for corporations and $ not the athletes
Im just so over expecting a big score from a sloppy air reverse at the end of a wave.
What's next , the most air reverses on a wave wins?!
The current format favors the top 5 ,surf ranch affects rankings for sure it's a judges event, nature and priority are taken out of the equation as well.
Surfing is different than other sports because it's fans surf. So, you can't fool us. We know who is shreding! Thus, when "the mystery judges" (who remain hidden and nameless) miss we know it.
Americans are acknowledging this too, there is a god. Surfing is going back too his essence free surfing and have fun. Forget competition
What do you want? A sport with sportive behavior or competitions supported by commercial interests.I rather watch some expression sessions or freesurfers vid's. This also trickles down in behavior in the line-up where ever you are. In combination with overcrowding this makes the future look quiet dire. To bad.
they robbed italo at the ranch
Bobby Martinez was right. Since then I lost interest in surfing competition, I don't watch it anymore.
WSL: The first rule of fight club is, you don't talk about fight club.
wsl gone woke
It will be swept away !!
does erik logan surf?
I’d rather watch surf travel docs where the surfers aren’t trying to out spin each other in slop.
Os brasileiros nao precisam da WSL. SOMOS OS MELHORES SURFISTAS DO MUNDO... QUE SE CRIE UMA LIGA FORTE COM OS BRASILEIROS ...SERIA O FIM DA WSL COMO EMPRESA
Brazilians have ruined pro surfing. Prove me wrong
Brazil event gonna be dope
He's kinda right but Griffin throws way more buckets than a smaller Toledo, if that's what he's talkjng

Poozil Stinking Up The Joint…
The judges need to move on from the old skool days and get with the new program 🇦🇺 like if a surfer can get barrelled, switch foot hand downs, winner straight up.
They just huck airs lol it’s impressive but that’s not what it’s all about
Show me the 💰!!!!!!! That's all folks!!!!!
Assuming all 5 judges different nationalities and then the top and bottom score dropped and the final score the medium of the middle 3. How can it be bias 🤔
Great question!
If your personal job depends on it, it doesn’t matter what nationality you are.

@@surf_360 well 2 of the judges were Brazilian, and they thought Griff won, and so did I. maybe they don't like shakey surfing either.
Flawless surfing is great. But I had seen enough.
I like to see something new. Like skateboarding.
Still no talk of mandates & jibbbs🎉
Everything is too political these days. Better off throwing it in the trash and start over.
Competitive surfing is by its nature is lame. Only try hard spastic style is rewarded. Example: beating a section with a long floater is scored lower than throwing up a big hack and loosing the wave.
It happens. Baseball ⚾️is worse. Football⚽️ even with Var they screwup. Italo shouldve had it. Win the next one dude🤙
Being a critic is easy. If you're going to voice criticism, offer solutions too.
Thanks for the feedback!
Brazilians are the best in a 2 foot swell haha
FACT: the WSL judging has a panel of judges being told what to score by one head official judge from his opinion and viewpoint.
Nope, nothing wrong there SMH !!!!
Nice video
@maattttt07 Thank you!
WSL é parcial , tem outros interesses envolvidos, a arbitragem é falha e não é clara.
the scoring system is done wrong, i have the solution
Go on…
