You forgot to mention the best part anout fire hardened arrows. They dont scare small game. You can shoot right next to a patmagarmin or rabbit and it wont flee. This even includes if you kill one. Fire hardened arrows are the only way you can even get multiple patmagarmin out of a herd of them. Its also a great way to train archery which has some amazing benefits.
@@TocsTheWanderer Yeah but to get the stuff to craft a bunch of simple arrows to actually level up archery a large amount is a pain and not really necessary while its easy to make fire hardened arrows and hunting small game with them is very useful as they don't spook them and you also level up archery. Not saying crafting arrows is terrible but I don't want to use every piece of metal scrap to craft like 6000 arrow heads and spend 3 eons crafting arrows.

Great video! Only thing I wanted to comment on is that if you decide to go hunting cougars (on interloper at least), you're gonna need a bit more than 5 arrows (at least with a simple bow and no crits)
I actually dropped it in 4 with no crit. Did have archery lvl 5 though so that probably helped. The cougar is super buggy right now and looks like its have a seizure whenever its trying to attack you and you're at a fire but no arrows appeared to stick out of its head. But more is also better. Arrows are light and having 26 extra is better then having to resort to throwing hand with the cougar.
@Defended_Pie How do you know there wasn't a crit? I didn't think there was any way to discern a crit from a non-crit, other than that they instantly kill the animal no matter the health, but maybe I'm wrong?
I usually hunt with about 5 as most dears tend to die in 1-2 hits in my experience and I don't mind waiting for them to bleed out if they don't die in 2 arrows
@@Defended_Pie You do not, they're just significantly more likely to happen when those areas are hit. You can even instakill bears with a bow or rifle on a limb or hip shot, only a 3% chance though. That's compared to a 15% chance with the head, and a 10% chance with the neck. With a cougar, limb and hip hits cannot critical, but a torso hit can with a bow, with a 2% chance. 5% with a hunting rifle. All these percentages are at skill level 1, so if you're level 5 multiply the bow chance by 1.5, and the rifle chance by 1.3
0:34 You can reload it a bit faster if you hit "r" right after firing a shell. It cuts down on the reloading time by at least 1 whole second. 10:47 You should use stones for rabbits, but use the fire-hardened arrows for ptarmigans. If you throw stones, you'll only ever be able to get 1 ptarmigan per flock, because the rest will fly away. They don't fly away from arrows that land near them though, meaning you can get the whole flock at once if you bring enough arrows and are accurate enough. You probably should have mentioned the Security Chief's Rifle Holster, an accessory that reduces the weight of your "primary" (I don't know how it determines which one is your primary rifle, but you should only ever be carrying one unless you're transporting loot) rifle by half when worn, not counting the weight of any ammo loaded into it. This means that Standard and Curator's Rifle will weigh 2kg, Vaughn's Rifle will weigh 1.5kg, Barb's Rifle will weigh 2.25kg, and it currently doesn't have an effect on the Bunker Rifle, at least in my experience. Even when I have access to firearms I pretty much always use a bow. It's just a vibe. Can't explain it much better than that XD Additionally the revolver is mainly for defense, I'm not a great enough shot to hunt with it and the rifle is mainly for hunting but is a waste to use it for defense, and is hella clunky (aside from the variants) The bow is a jack of all trades in a light package for me. Even the woodwright's bow is half as light as a revolver. I can reliably hunt and defend myself with a bow. It doesn't feel like a waste to shoot a wolf for me because both bows and arrows can be obtained infinitely with beach combing. Technically ammo is also an infinite resource now but it has to be traded for and I'm not repeating the same mistake as Great Bear islanders had made - reliance on outside resources
It's also worth mentioning that if things go badly and you have to cheat death to survive, it's almost certain that when you wake up, the base game weapons will be among your abandoned belongings and you'll be standing there defenseless. However, the special weapon variants will always stay with you, so even with low ammo, you'll still have a weapon with which to defend yourself. Probably no one would choose the base weapon over the special type, but it's still good to know if you're going on a risky journey or activity.

Whenever I start a save I instantly search every region for the hunting bunker to get the hunting revolver. Ever since I got jumped by 3 Twolf packs at once in sundered pass (pre patch) i realized you just can’t fire the rifle fast enough when there’s that many wolves. I always keep a revolver on me with enough ammo to reload 6 times after that nightmare. I keep the rifles at base for big game hunting.
And don't forget to pick up used bullets. They are used to make new rounds at the ammunition workbench. bullets are dropped when you reload the revolver and when you shoot with the rifle. Fire hardened arrows are a must for ptarmigans, because using stones will make the rest of the flock fly away, even missing will make them fly away, while with arrows, you can kill the whole flock silently because if you miss or kill one of their friend, they won't fly away.
An interesting bug that ive found is that if you kill something with the flare gun and then when the flare burns out you might be able to retrieve the still usable shell from the corpse. I don't know if this still exists.
Considering how ptarmigan being scared all together compared to rabbits I'd use stick arrows to save on time moving between their locations to farm enough broth and feathers for trades and repairs. But if you don't particularly care for them one stone would do just fine. And manufactured arrows from trader are just dumb easy to amass to the point when it would be smarter to keep most of your birch saplings green for a new bow and simply reinvest hides with feathers into more buffed arrows + no need to care if they break or got stuck in someones ass.
Hey Starz! Big fan of your work so far. I think it would be really helpful and interesting to have a guide on the memento caches in each region if you might be interested in doing something like that after the roomy pack series is over
@@Starz-pd Both kinds of saplings are obtainable indefinitely though beachcombing. So, via beachcombing and then the trader, rifle condition is infinite but very slow/impractical.
Beachcombing refers to the edge of the ice where things can wash up (Coastal highway for example) but things like pieces of clothing or random bits that normally don't respawn. It takes a long time to get much of anything but you can find things you can run out of.
Another thing to keep in mind is that, as long as you have enough scrap metal, you can repair any gun at a milling machine, even if they're 0% condition. Scrap metal is much more abundant that cleaning kits, and is also found relatively abundantly through beachcombing. Also there is a very tiny chance of finding a firearm cleaning kit through beachcombing. If a suitcase spawns, which is already relatively rare, there is a 0.16% chance that it will contain a firearm cleaning kit.
For hunting birds I heard that fire hardened arrow is better than stones as stones tend to scare the birds so you lose the whole flock but the arrow let you kill all of them, also wirh the arrow you do not need to rush into the bird to kill it so you can hunt with ease.
One thing I like to tell new players, everything bleeds out except moose and cougar, so I tend to pistol or bow hunt everything else using stealth. A bear will only charge you if he can see you and reach you. I only use the rifles for moose and cougars as they don't bleed out and I need the extra damage per shot.
I am too scared of bears and moose, I ALWAYS bring a distress pistol and until I acquire one I'm a nervous wreck. On my stalker run, I have found multiple rifles and keep them at my safehouses so I don't have to carry a rifle between them, relying mainly on my revolver for wolf defense and only using the rifle to kill big game or hunt with the intention to kill. I am starting to work the bow into my playstyle and have gotten a few good kills with it but am still not entirely confident, but it's a nice way to save on bullets.
I've fired maybe 6 distress pistol rounds in my current 300+ day Stalker run, half of those were specifically to kill bears because I didn't have very much rifle ammo yet. A well timed and placed flare shell to the head will sometimes insta-kill bears, and even if they don't die instantly, they'll bleed out within 30 in-game minutes. It's easiest to make the shot when it's charging you, and less than 5 meters away. As long as you don't fire too late, even a miss will scare it and stop the charge.
Very good analysis video, but i do have a few things to say about the distress pistol. The distress pistol can keep wolves and timberwolves at bay if shot which can last 20 in-game minutes, giving you enough time to escape. It is also a very effective tool to decrease timberwolf morale, decreasing it by 1/4. It can also be used as a last resort if you have nothing to defend yourself with. But otherwise perfect video guide
One video I'd like to see would be about efficient clothing. I usually just opt for the warmest stuff I can find but it's probably just extra weight most of the time.
A Distress Pistol with 3-4 ammo and a Revolver with 12-18 ammo are always enough to protect me while travelling. If I'm exploring a new region and might want to hunt I bring my bow. And store rifles in my main and secondary bases and use them only for hunting.
I never leave home without a rifle, I know it's heavy but you can't beat having the best weapon in the game available to you whenever you need it. I've always been of the opinion that it is better to have and not need than to need and not have.
My very first and only expedition into the sundered pass would agree. Left my rifle at home, brought a revolver with 70-something bullets, I thought I'd be fine after all, I had my supplies, my food, cured meat, high-tier clothing. Expected a long-ish expedition so figured the extra space for gear would be good. Zone of Contamination wasn't too bad withour a rifle and having that extra space was nice there, I found lots of filters and could carry them with me. Left sundered pass with 12 bullets and no medicine, I hated every single part of that region, holy shit.
@@Starz-pd there's absolutely nothing of worth there, the only reason to go there is for the tale (and the feats that completing it unlocks), the photo camera and the gloves you get in the process and potentially a rifle from the observatory. Other than that, there isn't much to look out for, just don't. The ideal plan there would be to just finish the tale in essentially one entire run through, grab all the unique items along the way, and bail to never come back.
@@meemdic8682 it’s not my favorite to live in but for other reasons, I’m probably going to make a whole video on sundered pass and why I love it. But I could never recommend staying there longer than I’d need for the tale
Over all pretty good however you can reliable kill wolves with a head shot and can scare bears if just in range and hidden. (The bear can not be investigating you)
For some reason I hoarded every rifle and revolver I found and stashed all of them in the office room in community hall. I don’t know why I did this but it just felt like it would help me in the future
Me too. On one of my longer play throughs I could not find any guns for 15 days. And then after I got semi-settled in, I kept finding them. I had a little armory in a shack. Until I got lost in a blizzard and froze anyway.
Revolver on lower difficulty can also kill moose. Takes time, but holy hit is it satisfying. If you can hit a charging moose 3 to 4 times, you can make it rethink its life choices too and it will run.
I’m surprised this isn’t mentioned. Barb’s rifle has a much much better sight picture for aiming. It might not be flashier than the other options but it is more accurate.
The revolver will kill a bear or wolf. You may need to land a few shots on the bear but as long as it is bleeding it will die. 1 distress pistol and a fully loaded revolver is all you really need for exploring if you bring the bow. DP is your panic button. ( Barb's rifle should be left at your main safe house as your day hunting rifle to be used in zone.)
@@averylawton5802 yup! But I wouldn’t recommend using a revolver for hunting bears just because it can be risky or use a lot of ammo. Unless you’re waiting on it to bleed out. Also, I personally think that a bow + revolver + distress pistol is way over packing! If you can try to leave some stuff behind :)
@@Starz-pd Ohhh I only know cause I HAD to shoot a bear once and it did bleed out....not like I recommend that, lol. The DP to me is the last line of "oh shit" defense when I am first going into an area. Once I have a base camp established it can be left there, but more often than not it has saved me from a moose or bear or TW pack that would have surely been the end of me. I plan out my trips into legs and some legs require more packing than others like taking a cooking pot you know you are going to leave at a base camp. Heavy in the first leg only, like summiting a mountain IRL, the hike to base camp you take a LOT more gear than the climb up.
The fire-hardened arrow is important early game because they do not injure deer. You can practice/level-up your archery skill by making 100 fire-hardened arrows and shooting deer over and over.
@@horseonabeachball5996 I wanna cover all the challenges, do some safe house location vids, beginners guides, region reviews, and a bunch more! I could talk about this game forever lol
I'm going to have to disagree on the hunting rifle, because taking a shot at an animal at the range that the curator's rifle would make a difference is most of the time unnecessary, and you're only running a higher chance of missing your shots and wasting ammo and condition. By crouching you can get very close to animals without alerting them, so you can get clean shots off at deer, and for moose and bears you should have a better plan just shooting them from a far away and hoping you'll be able to drop them before a struggle. So in short I don't think the upside of the Curator's rifle makes a difference and you should use Barb's rifle to save up on cleaning kits.
Ive found the Forester's Revolver the best for very long trips where you dont know what you are going to find, the addition of the Bunker rifle (previously it was Vaughn's Rifle) makes for a solid combo for trips where you might run into a bear or moose bit still want to hunt the odd deer or rabbit. For example say you are going to Forsaken airfield from Desolation Point, a rather long trip with plenty of possible bears and enough rabbits to make both the revolver and rifle relevant. Important note that combo is best suited for people who are less used to wildlife spawns if you know where animals spawn then ditch one or the other. Secondary note carrying two variations of the revolver helps alot afainst Timberwolves keep them both loaded and use your prefered revolver first and the backup when the wolves get a little too close for comfort or you need to reload
I'm not sure I would bother wasting revolver ammo on rabbits, they are very easy to stun with stones which are abundant and light. As far as timberwolf encounters with a revolver go, I try to reload after one or two shots when they are regrouping rather than take time to do the entire cylinder. They usually give you enough of window for this.
@PRC533 Stones are hit and miss IMO they are good but I generally prefer just dropping the rabbit rather then having to rush in quick to stop it from getting back up, I normally get rabbits while I'm doing something else like getting wood or traveling not specifically going out looking for rabbits. The two revolver trick is best suited for newer players who are still learning the ropes with Timberwolves having more shots on standby is always nice (especially if your one of the people who unload the revolver in their inventory as not to lose track of cases).
im glad someone cares about the integrity of their info...sucks to follow advice from some streamer that is far outdated or just bad in general then die because "there are always matches here" or "the bear never comes this way" only to lose an 1800 day loper run

If a suitcase spawns, which is already relatively rare, there is a 0.16% chance that it will contain a firearm cleaning kit.
Higher fire rate rifle for Pumas if you want to put a second bullet in it
yoo almost 2k? nice bro
YESSSSS I've been waiting for this video!!!
I mentioned that stuff in the video I think? If i didn't sorry about that! Thank you!
I use the flare pistol to kill bears all the time. And it's usually insta-kill.
One video I'd like to see would be about efficient clothing. I usually just opt for the warmest stuff I can find but it's probably just extra weight most of the time.
Bro your videos are so good that I have been checking your channel daily for the next upload! I would like to see gameplay from you too
@@AstroDublaj I’m gonna start streaming every Saturday at 2 pm MST! I’ll be live tomorrow if you wanna come see me play a bit!
@ I’ll try!
A Distress Pistol with 3-4 ammo and a Revolver with 12-18 ammo are always enough to protect me while travelling.
If I'm exploring a new region and might want to hunt I bring my bow.
And store rifles in my main and secondary bases and use them only for hunting.
I saw this video on my home page for days not knowing it was tld, you honestly fumbled that detail since I barely recognized the gun model.
3:35 I think shooting a bear at waterfront cottages from misanthropes Island is more than 20 meters... 😂
heeeey! you used the gunslinger clip! nice shot... anyways, "crits" on the revolver are purely luck, with a 40% chance on headshot
I never leave home without a rifle, I know it's heavy but you can't beat having the best weapon in the game available to you whenever you need it. I've always been of the opinion that it is better to have and not need than to need and not have.
true!
@ that’s my favorite region right now 🤭
@@Starz-pd there's absolutely nothing of worth there, the only reason to go there is for the tale (and the feats that completing it unlocks), the photo camera and the gloves you get in the process and potentially a rifle from the observatory.
@@disbeafakename167 A gun may keep you safe, but it won't keep you warm.
Great as always! Keep it up
Revolver on lower difficulty can also kill moose. Takes time, but holy hit is it satisfying. If you can hit a charging moose 3 to 4 times, you can make it rethink its life choices too and it will run.
barbs rifle is heavy but is nice to use and preserve rifle cleaning kits
After lerning how to shot from bow, huntig rifle become usless due to its weight
For the Firearm Cleaning Kit: you can trade (Trustlevel 4) it for Birch/Maple Saplings. Both are renewable viva Beachcombing.
You the best man!!
love the smaller front sight on barbs rifle
Heavy in the first leg only, like summiting a mountain IRL, the hike to base camp you take a LOT more gear than the climb up.
another based video

The fire-hardened arrow is important early game because they do not injure deer. You can practice/level-up your archery skill by making 100 fire-hardened arrows and shooting deer over and over.
2:38 you're so cool 🤩maybe one day I could be as cool as you☺
What do you plan to do after this series is done?
@@horseonabeachball5996 I wanna cover all the challenges, do some safe house location vids, beginners guides, region reviews, and a bunch more! I could talk about this game forever lol
What about the rifle holster from the signal void tale, doesn't that reduce the wheight of rifles?
Yup! I'm gonna do a clothing and equipment review soon!
you can fix bunker fifle using a drill in a last resort canery workshop
Why wouldn't I use distress pistol for hunting? It kills bears easily and with the recent bug you can pick up the shells if you hit
You've been making some fantastic videos. I hope your channel continues to grow.
@Starz, have you thought about doing a video about the gear/clothing that’s crafted from the hides of wildlife?
@@TheEnigmatrix I’m doing a more general clothing video that’s coming out later today!
Do note that you can't find the Sports/Woodwright's bow on Interloper
i like to be bring 10 kilograms of BASED around
I don't think the bunker rifle has a faster bolt chambering time like the vaughn's rifle.
you should only ever take or need the bow. if you need another weapon then you need more practice...ten arrows or more.
!!! Security Chief's Rifle Holster!
Why use a distress pistol
To use the 689 flare shells you find across the map of course
The clothing! Do the clothing!!
Make one part about clothing pls
