- Hi, In this woodworking video, I take you through the process on how to create an awesome 3D end grain cutting board. This cutting board is inspired by one created by mtmwood, but was accompished with a different method. Enjoy!
DISCLAIMER: There are a few spots in this video where it looks like my hand is an unsafe distance from the blade. I can assure you that all cuts were made safely, and that my hand was not as close to the blade as the certain camera angles made it appear.

GREAT INSTRUCTIONAL VIDEO!! For those of you with a wider planer you can save glue time by attaching all 1/4" Maple strips, as mentioned, all at once to save a day of glue time.

After seeing your amazing video, I knew I had to make one of these beautiful cutting boards using your video as the plans. I just completed it and it turned out absolutely BEAUTIFUL! Thank you so much for taking the time to document the process in such detail. For those who are thinking about making one, go for it. Take it slow and watch this video several times BEFORE you start each step. If there is one tip above all else that I can give you, it would be to listen to Caleb concerning the final glue up and MAKE SURE it's perfectly flat and aligned as you apply the clamp pressure. I put parchment paper on a glass table top that was perfectly flat and it came out great with minimal sanding. Good luck!

Thanks for a great video. May I respectfully make a suggestion? When it comes to glueing the three constituent strips together, I ganged up the maple strip with a walnut strip (not gluing them to in between!) then did a second glue up with the cherry strip, again ganged together. Saves time and uses fewer clamps.

Caleb, great cutting board! Just made two using your video. You could save yourself some time by planning the end grain when you are ready to smooth it out before sanding. To do this you must glue a piece of wood on each end of the FINISHED board. I use a piece of 2x4. Then plane using using 1/32 inch passes. The boards on the ends will help with snipe and tearing out the end of the cutting board. It really work well and is a time saver. Just my thoughts. GREAT CUTTING BOARD!!!
Thanks! I know some people will run end grain through the planer with out any problem, but I would advise against it. Even with small passes you risk causing the board to shatter which could injure you or the machine. The boards on the end is a good idea if you decide it's worth it. Thanks again!

The board with the square 3D pattern looks to me like an unfinished pattern from two sides. I put either a light or a dark strip around the board so that the pattern is completed on all sides. Otherwise, nice job.

Caleb, great video. I hope some day I will get to your level. Two questions, 1) when cutting the walnut & cherry to the 45 degree angle what is the distance from the saw blade to the fence, and 2) what is the height of the saw blade prior to setting to 45 degree angle? Thank you.
Great job/gorgeous! Any warping or delaminating yet? I imagine it's crucial to not let fine boards like this sit in a puddle or get extremely wet/dry on one side only.
Thanks! I haven't had any problems with the board warping or grain moving apart. You are correct about not letting it sit in water and making sure it drys on both sides,
I just finished this project and it turned out beautifully. I love it. I did have a hiccup along the way though. After glueing down the sheets of the thin 3/8 inch maple onto the walnut side and clamping and weighing down the center, after drying the entire piece warped up in the center even with the weights. But I pressed on to the next step and cut the board into 1 1/2 inch strips. I then before the final glue up clamped all of the strips into place the best I could and applied steam from a fabric steamer all around the wood for about 30 minutes. I then let it dry completely and presto, all of the pieces straighten out perfectly and were then ready for the final glue up. I also had the good fortune of owning a CNC machine which allowed me to avoid the 3+ hour sanding effort and I had it perfectly level in about 30 minutes with the use of a 1/2 inch flat head router bit on the CNC. So if you have access to a CNC it will make the smoothing and leveling almost effortless. A quick water spraying and then sanding with my rotating sander and it was ready for the oil dip. I love the board. I was going to give it as a gift, but my wife does not want to part with it. I sense more of this board build is in my near future. Thank you for you design! I have been struggling to figure out the missing dimensions. These maple strips are 3/8 and not 1/4?
My maple strips are 1/4 inch. I think 3/8 inch strips would be too thick and might affect the desired effect. @@MrBillp9
@@MrBillp9 My board was made with 1/4 inch strips. I think 3/8" would hinder the 3D effect. Just go with it. It's fairly simple and follow the video. You won't go wrong.

Lovely job, looks absolutely fantastic! Just a thought though, could you not have used a router sled to flatten the finished board rather than trying to do it with hand sanding for hours on end? If it was pretty flat to begin with, just one quick pass to slice off a mm or two and you'd have been sorted 👌☺️

You might want to consider waiting to glue the endgrain strips of maple into the board during the second glue up, rather than adding it into the mix as a second of three glue ups. It would save a whole step.

Does using cherry as the square piece instead of maple and having maple as one of the angled pieces ruin the pattern or just vary it? (I have lots of cherry and not as much maple available). Also will color variation in one of the woods impact the pattern?

Great work! Dont you have wide belt sanders in the US? It makes sanding at the end very easy. Maybe 1h for the whole board

A drum sander would have been a good tool to have.
While you are cutting the width cuts, save a block or two for future measuring saw width setup so you can repeat without measuring again. Do a set of different width's to keep. :)
Yes, you could do that! I'm not sure I make enough of these cutting boards to make use of them, but it certainly is a good idea if you make a lot!
Very effective but without them shop tools Uve got I don’t think many people r gonna achieve the same results as u shame cos I reckon a lot of people would like to try and make it cos it does look great

Can you explain the reason for using the bandsaw to cut the maple pieces you just on the table saw thinner? Why not just use the table saw to cut to the width that you wanted in the first place?

Hey Caleb, the last maple panel that you re-sawed. What's the final thickness you're trying to get?
The final thickness for those pieces should be 1/4 inch, good luck!
Terrific...a question from a newbie....could you set the dimensions for the maple square to be 3/4 inch, reduce the
width of the walnut and cherry to 1 and 1/4? this avoids having to get 5/4 lumber, i think.

I didn't actually use 5/4 lumber, it was all 4/4. All the dimensions provided in the video will work with 4/4 lumber. hope this helps and good luck!
@@CalebsFineWoodworking was your 4/4 surfaced to 13/16when your got it? amazing you were able to get 3/4 inch square maple pieces. also, how did you manage to get 2 pieces of walnut and cherry from a 4/4 board or even a 5/4 board assuming the 5/4 was surfaced to 1 1/16? i have a very hard time getting 5/4 lumber.

First time made 3D board. Did pretty good but screwed up sanding. Bad idea to put it through planer?
Glad you gave it a shot! Sorry the sanding didn't go as planned. I wouldn't recommend putting it through the planer because it's an end grain cutting board. Ideally you would use a drum sander or a belt sander. Hope this helps!
What is the thickness of the boards before cutting, at the beginning of work? Beautifully
