As an English reading and writing tutor for first and second year college students- many of whom are in remedial classes- I find this video very helpful in explaining how to paraphrase rather than simply what paraphrasing is. I find that many students know what paraphrasing is, but they struggle to rephrase sentences and paragraphs into their own words. I might add that using strategies such as rearranging the order of a sentence, in addition to using synonyms is a great tactic.
Honestly, this is the kind of teaching techniques that students from various learning institutions need, it is very creative, educational, informative, interesting and entertaining as well. Guy Stieglitz, you have done an excellent job for making this wonderful instructional video and I give you 100% respect for that. I think you should also do another video that will teach students the differences between paraphrasing and plagiarism and give many examples that will explained clearly theirs differences. Thanks and keep up the good work.
I really thank you for your kind feedback. I am going to make that video real soon because the difference between paraphrasing and citing is important and I think some younger students don't really see the difference.
I am so glad I have come across this. I personally feel this is the only vlog that has simplified everything so well. Thank you so much for this .. I really don't understand why people have disliked this...... no one can break down Paraphrasing this well.
The pedagogy is so useful that it touched me deeply, because it taught me everything in the act of paraphrasing in terms of structure, synonymous, sentence, rewording. Thanks a lot 👍
Thank you for sharing this! I will be able to use your video with my students because you are so thorough and well-paced while explaining. I am a middle school English teacher and never heard of the online paraphrasing tool. Very helpful for my young learners to have a way to check their paraphrasing work.
Here is my paraphrase regarding New York City (sentence level changes): Nestled very close to the Atlantic Ocean, the city that never sleeps, New York, has a very wide variety of spectacular sights and attractions that allures not only those who live in the state, but also those from other states and also international visitors.
I haven't heard about such an interesting option in writing programs. Thanks a lot for this knowledge, it is going to be extremely helpful in my future writing.
My foundation studies program wants us to learn this but I don't understand what the teacher is saying after watching this video I get the idea of on how to paraphrase thx so much Mr Guy
Mr. Guy, that's the best lecture I have ever seen! I can see that you made a great efforts in this lecture, all the materials are well prepared. I viewed some videos , the lecturer just talk some fancy words to the viewers, which is not up to the academic level at all. thanks !!
Mr. Guy , Thanks for your response . A question bothers me for a long time, I hope you can help . for example : 1. I am very thirsty please get a bottle of water for me.. or I am parched and get a bottle of water for me. 2. I am so tired, I need a rest. or I am totally drained, I need a rest. I know the both sentence carries similar meaning, but the way of expression is different. my question is I have never seen any foreigner talking like that. Don't you think it is much better to keep your sentence simple and clear ? I am not sure if I should use the second way, please leave your valuable opinion. Many thanks for your time !
I am totally drained, I need a rest - This one seems quite reasonable. But the interesting aspect of choosing is in the differences in the word: "Drained" suggests that one has had a long day and/or process has made that person tired. I am parched and get a bottle of water for me -- this one does not really feel as authentic. "Parched" is a bit too formal. So, I think, overall, you are on the right track in that you have an ear for what seems natural. For me, simple and direct is always best. Clarity and simplicity rule the day! I hope that helped.
The problem with modern guides on paraphrasing is that they are tuned towards beating the plagiarism software. A paraphase is your understanding of a sentence or paragraph. Therefore it must be in your words, which means the words that make up your vocab. Does that mean that the words in my paraphrase must always be different than the words in the sentence? Not necessarily, if those words are in your vocabulary. Thus, I like sports will remain I like sports. But that would create an issue with plagiarism detecting softwares. Hence, the modern emphasis on changing the words always.
it was a great job and a very clear, but one more thing, after you are changing and paraphrase in another shape but keep same meaning. the final step in research, for example, should we end any sentence of paraphrasing with footnote. If we supposed to use APA style. It was really helpful, but do you have more videos about how to reference it at the end of your research.
Hello, Sam I am glad that you found the video helpful. The key to your questions is what format you will be using, which is usually decided by the instructor or institution. APA and MLA are common. This resource, in my view. is one of the best. I hope it helps. owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/
Paraphrasing is the literary equivalent of trying to disarm an explosive device. Because if you don't do it properly, you could get written up for plagiarism. I know, it happened to me once.
This is a very helpful video, and I'll direct my students to it for sure. Just one comment, however. I think it would be preferable for your final example, the paragraph-level paraphrase, to condense the original as well as changing grammar and vocabulary. That is, ideally your (or a student's) version would be shorter whilst still maintaining the essence of the original. Perhaps the three sentences in this paragraph could be condensed to two, or maybe even one? Something like: "Supported by substantial scientific evidence, The International Health Authority maintains that the long-term ingestion of the dangerous chemical BPA, via plastic molecules originating in food wrappings, has a cumulative and increasingly negative impact upon the body." What do you think? My intention here is not to outdo your very excellent paraphrase (though I AM rather pleased with my version!), but to propose that one possible goal of paraphrase is to abbreviate and distill, as well as to recast. I'd be very interested to know your views! Thank you again for an excellent pedagogical tool :-)
Hello, Stephen Thanks for your comments. I do like your paraphrase as it is quite sophisticated and succinct. However, my students at the time would never be able to produce that type of language. The video was done as a survival guide for my students, a step-by-step. So I would agree that a student with more linguistic skills would be able to take the spirit of the video and run with it. With this said, I have read several resources that state the paraphrase should be more or less the same length as the original whereas summaries are meant to be shorter versions. Thanks again for your comments and let me know what you think.
Ah, yes-the difference between summary and paraphrase. That’s a very helpful point indeed. And yes, upon reflection I am drawing on 20 years’ academic writing experience. It’s a timely reminder of the importance of meeting students where they are currently and helping them to move forward (though they never cease to amaze me from time to time!). Many thanks indeed for a very interesting and fruitful exchange!
Dear sir. First. Thank you so much. Second. You can replace studies with works, I am an English teacher at a scientific college. I look at tens of theses and papers and I love your way of lecturing
Hello. Thanks for the video! Here is a question. What if an author has shown when an idea appeared and how it was used throughout history in e.g. three pages and I want to paraphrase only parts that I need (e.g. not including all the periods the author mentions or all the points about these periods). And I want that the paraphrase be e.g. only one paragraph long.
That is a lot of paraphrasing. Usually we insert specific ideas from authors into our text. It is not typical to paraphrase that much information. I would run it by your teacher.
Hi, I love your video and learned a lot from this video. I have a question, How could you get synonyms of the word after you click it? Can you tell me the way of setting?
Mark the word that you want a synonym for and then right-click. You should see a list of words if there are any available. Click on the word you think is best. Let me know if that works for you.
Should we name the site from where we were paraphrasing just like the source giving ? And in case of assignment writing, should I add that citation in the reference portion?

fuck off
I am really suprised that over 300 views and don't like this video. Myself I'll give big like.
thanks Mr Guy.
I think some people dislike, because they really like to dislike because clicking is so easy. For me a BIG LIKE, too.
I am so glad I have come across this. I personally feel this is the only vlog that has simplified everything so well. Thank you so much for this .. I really don't understand why people have disliked this...... no one can break down Paraphrasing this well.

Nice effort!
That's much better than the original, which is repetitive, saying that NY is popular and people like to visit, which mean the same thing.
it wouldnt be so easy while doing it on scientific articles
@@pr7009 It is more of a challenge, but still very possible.
honestly... the best way of teaching... telling each and single point... please kindly share more video... Thank you
