My favorite TV show! Glad to know you are digging it. Was REALLY looking forward to this. Have a much watched DVD set of the series, but the lack of the announced extras is a real bummer. Was going to get this day one, but will probably wait for a sale to upgrade. Thanks for letting us know where the fault lays, and the great videos!
Just to be clear, the extras were not only announced but actually completed! Sad that theyre just sitting there. I too am real bummed out by this and, sorry Kino, will wait for a sale. Obviously it is due to legal issues but ive heard it may specifically be on account of legal clauses from Faulk's estate. Not likely to change any time soon.
Hi Brian. One of my absolute favorite TV shows - I talk about it on my weekly livestreams that really have nothing to do with Columbo 🤣I just finished watching seasons 1-7 and loved every minute. Peter Falk is brilliant and I could watch him do anything on screen. It's sad that some of the extra features were removed, I would have loved to hear those commentaries. One of my favorite parts of Columbo is you feel like you are watching scenes that could have been cut but you are so happy (elated) that they didn't cut anything - it's perfect. 😀So many favorite scenes but one that I enjoy is when Columbo is not so patiently waiting for a computer print out with some information that he needs - the scene is so so long but extremely enjoyable. I can confirm that all of the episodes are HD on Peacock and look great. I am watching the TV movies now. Not as good as the original 7 seasons but still good in my humble opinion probably because I just like seeing Peter Falk 😀Now I really want to see Poker Face based on your thoughts. Thanks for showcasing the new set.
Thanks so much Dave! Yeah getting finally turned on to Columbo basically because of POKER FACE is definitely one of the nice side things about the show, but my guess is that you’d dig POKER FACE if you like Columbo and Natasha Lyonne (who I think is great)
I bought the box set when it was released, it's fantastic in quality, both the audio and video are first rate. I would love to hear from someone who has the Japanese Blu-Ray box set issued several years ago to A-B compare them. The only things I would have changed would be to print the names of each episode on the discs themselves, you can't flip through the discs to find anything, you have to refer to their booklet to find anything. Also the jewel cases that hold the discs aren't great at holding the discs in place, you need to be careful removing and returning them.
Howdy Brian...from the Lone Star State of Texas. Im new to your channel....i have that very set. It is a greateat KL release. Today i received KL "Columbo: The Return"..it includes seasons 8-10...which now completes the whole series....😎. Will you be getting the set and post an unboxing?
@@JustTheDiscs awesome!....i actually have not opened either set. I will get round to it. At present im going through the Six Million Dollar Man, Bionic Woman, and Northern Exposure blurays... Once im done i will begin the Columbo series as well as the Sherlock Holmes [Jeremey Brett version] complete series bluray. He is the best Sherlock. I do have the complete series bluray with Basil Rathbone as Sherlock. He is great, too. Im a physical media addict 😎
I have the an earlier box set. Columbo is by far one of my favorite shows. It’s a handshake show for sure. Does anyone know if a version with commentaries is coming out anytime?
@@JustTheDiscs hey wow, thanks for asking me! Honestly, a lot of my viewing comes from pure cinema, so you’ll probably know most of these but here’s a few I have enjoyed: Smile (pat and Jim Healy) Vertigo (friedkin) Two-lane blacktop (Hellman) Any of the carpenter/russell commentaries (obviously) QT has a really cool one for true romance In the heat of the night (Jewison and wexler) -just a few. Thanks for asking!
Maybe someone will release some Peter Falk titles I've wanted on bluray for a while....COOKIE, ALL THE MARBLES and especially Neil Simon's THE CHEAP DETECTIVE, which I would argue is funnier than MURDER BY DEATH!
A pity about the special feature but I'm still keen to get this set and replace my old DVD set. I've seen how these new transfers look and they blow the DVDs away so even without the features I feel it's worth it for the PQ quality alone!
I think the lack of features and the amount of discs is cost. Means they would need to charge a lot more from the set. But fortunately I bought the Japanese blu ray boxed set many years ago which has 35 discs this only has 20. So has to reflect on quality. BTW the Japanese blu rays only have 2 episodes each too. Some isolated audio tracks but pretty much no features either.
Hoping to get this set soon…I wish Ridley Scott would reimburse us the $75 wasted on his terrible Napoleon movie. Columbo would have been a better use of our money.
I'm waiting on the Philo Vance trilogy from Kino, which was announced last year but they ran into issues and it sounds like they're still many months away from completion. Just looking at their twitter, I gotta say, whoever they put in charge of that account is rude as all hell to followers and I can't believe how flippant they've been on a constant basis with people just asking simple questions. Doesn't seem like a great company.
Kino didn’t do a good job with the aspect ratio. Originally Colombo was 4:3 aspect ratio. Kino's release was released on wide-screen cutting details at the top and bottom. The Japanese bluray version (in English) has the original aspect ratio.

Thanks very much! Yes very sad about no extras - not kinos fault but still a bummer
Amazon has the set on sale if anyone is interested
Oh thx for the heads up!

Yeah it’s very sad that they are out there but can’t be used

So good.

I think these are new scans so may look better than that previous set?

Pretty sure it’s not coming.
@@JustTheDiscs that is, like a bummer, man.
@@JustTheDiscs Hey Brian, have you ever done an episode on this show or on Pure Cinema where you do a top "commentaries" list? Just curious....

Thanks for the review. I have seen the episodes so many times but would be interested in commentaries that are not on this set. Too bad.
Yeah it’s a shame.
Still get set, but wish could gotten extras. Just question are extras on dvds?
No extras there that I know of?

Oh yes the PQ is great and the set is absolutely worth grabbing
Maybe the extras have been held back until a 4k release.
Would be great if that ever happened
I have two issues with this. It us blue ray Region A so it is not available in Europe, and it does not have season 8-10.
Both fair issues
The later seasons come out this month, there's a volume II.

Sounds like a good deal except I believe these are brand new scans and if I had to guess I’d say the Japanese discs might not have had those. 🤷♂️

Columbo set is a good investment indeed
So, poker face is a rip off of, 'Lie to me', which came out a year after 'The Mentalist' started ;)
Okay fair enough but Columbo is absolutely in the mix as Rian Johnson is notably obsessed with that show

Totally missed that announcement- very cool. Hoping it happens in 2024!
I love columbo but i hate the artwork and the lack of extras 😢
