It is criminal that a 40th anniversary definitive box set was not released in America. From what I can tell Knight Rider's 40th anniversary came and went in America without much of anything to show for it. Michael Jackson's Thriller received a nice 40th Anniversary re-release of the album on vinyl and a CD set. Why on earth didn't Universal think enough of Knight Rider to give fans here in the states something this nice?
Because Germany has a very special place in their heart for David Hasselhoff, so Knight Rider has an even bigger cult following here than in the US. Relative numbers speaking. And no facts, just a lucky guess :)
Usually they test the market with the highest fan concentation which for Knight Rider is Germany . I suspect they'll release in UK / North America in English if this sells well. Music rights are more complicated in those territories though so that might be a stumbling block. Universal had to replace tracks on Miami Vice and The Equalizer because of that to release in USA and UK but those shows used original artist recordings whereas all of the pop songs in Knight Rider were Don Peake soundalikes so I don't think that should be a problem as Universal own all the rights to that.

Hi mate, you won't believe it, but I was hanging out with Turbine Medien CEO Phil last week here in Münster Germany. We had a meeting at his office and of course we talked about the Knight Rider release. We met for an interview and Phil told me a lot about the upcoming releases. Greetz from Germany, Basti 🙋♂️
16:59 I love how you show that delightful "lay the media-boxes side-by-side to form a complete picture" feature of that boxed set --- the Star Trek VHS tape set had that same unusual segmented photo layout, as well --- if you stacked the VHS boxes in chronological order, a complete image of the Starship Enterprise appeared on their spines. :D
The backs of a couple of seasons do show the side of the semi trailer... (look at the interactive "What's in the Box" link I posted in the comments....
I ordered this set after watching this video. I re-watched Knight of the Drones and was surprised at how much of this episode was missing from the Mill Creek set. There was a scene after Bonnie goes missing where KITT showed off some of his new upgrades to Michael and Devon.
I bought this set because of this video. Everything was just as this video described. Outstanding. I wanted to tell my experience, for any Americans buying this set from Germany as I did. Using translation tools, I was able to navigate the website enough to purchase and pay for the item. Strangely, it started out saying it was 199.95 Euros, but somewhere during the transaction, it discounted itself to 168.03 Euros and I don't know why. However, with international shipping the final total ended up being 207.98 Euros. Yes that is a lot, but I felt this set was worth it, and it was a nice surprise to be discounted like that. However, be aware of this big problem I had. When I tried to check out, the transaction failed, and all I got was a generic "Try again later" error. Then I got a call from my credit card company about a suspicious transaction. They blocked it from going through, because I am living in the USA, and I just tried to buy something off a German website. Understandable, I suppose. But I had to call the credit card company, prove my identity, and tell them I wanted the transaction to happen and that it was not fraud. I don't know if this will happen to everyone, but you need to be aware that it happened to me. Once that was cleared up, I ordered the item while on the phone with the credit card company. I got an email from Turbine Shop saying the order went through. A few days later, I got an email with a tracking number saying it shipped. I tracked the package as it flew to the US. About 11 days after I ordered it, I received the package today. I hope this helps anyone from the US who is considering buying this set.
@@KnightRiderHistoriansOfficial I seem to have encountered one problem. All of the discs seem to be region-free and work in my bluray player except one: the TKR complete series disc. :( I am trying to find a way around this, but so far, no luck.
@@rockmanrespect Someone else some comments down the line had the same problems and I answered the same to him yesterday. He just replied, that the "top menu" worked for him. So maybe you used the wrong button or it's a matter of your player then?
I have the dvd set that featured the scan bar, The french blu ray release, the uk blu ray release, the millcreek blu ray release, the Japanese blu ray release, & now coming soon the German blu ray release. KITT i need you.
@@joe666b Yes, some other content is still missing. But I think this set really delivers where it counts, for most fans. The original show was given much care and love. And the total package is absolutely phenomenal. This was a first class effort, from Turbine.
Of everything, I'm glad they kept the 4:3. I hate the zoomed in look of panned and scanned 16:9 so much, as it cuts off literally half of the screen area. Just to mention I had a brain flash just now. As a kid I always associated the show as Night Rider - someone who goes around at night, mainly from the dark parts of the season 1 opening credits. But I just realised its Knight Rider, a Knight on a Black steed. A medieval warrior of chivalry and honour. Like the last samurai or last ninja. Kitts scanner now reminds me of a ninja, looking. Btw, If the scanner was just a little faster it would actually hypnotise people, just like a pocket watch; - and some car manufacturers are replicating the Kitt look with their turn signals, not realising that this sort of thing is very dangerous. Was the hypnotic scanner ever used as a plot device on the show?
Joe! I have to comment!!! Former Long Islander here- Knight of the Drones on WWOR did HAVE the hybrid opening! I always knew I was watching that episode when it was on just by the opening of the single shot of KITTs tail light followed immediately by the S1/S2 dash on the interior. It was always my favorite episode, and that beginning was melted into my mind from when I was watching it back in 88.
@@KnightRiderHistoriansOfficial Hello I have a question I just watch your Knight Rider 40th Anniversary of Knight Rider and I wanted to asked you was all of the original included on this Blu-ray set and is John Crouger Hurt So Good included and how much music was Turbine able to clear?
Well damn you I just ordered this. I’d sell my Mill Creek boxset but it might be invaluable to keep the sound-alike cuts on hand just so I can compare and to show others the changes. You are right this is the definitive set and the extra goodies sweeten the deal.
I grabbed the Japanese box set a few years ago. That was supposed to have the original music but it doesn't have any of the teasers before each episode which is a bummer. This is tempting
Hi. I have this set myself and am thrilled with it. Just to let you know that the posters are double-sided. Can't wait to watch them all again, especially Team Knight Rider as I never got to see it when it was shown here in the UK.
I’ve always wondered why Dead of Knight had no music during those scenes on the boxset.. but on my vhs copy it was there, and in Knight of the Drones one the scenes with the girls dancing there was also no music there too. makes sense I guess.. but what really fascinates me most is how a lot of scenes from different episodes were actually cut out on the TV version that were on the DVD that I have never seen aired on TV until I had the got the boxset. I still have all the VHS recordings I made when I was a kid it took me nearly 8 years to get the all the episodes between WGN and Sci-fi channels. Good times those were.
Thanks for the review, I'm loving my box too. We just need to use Google to translate or learn German now haha (if you Manage to get an English copy of the book, please share with me). I do like the fact that when it's in English the titles of each episode comes up in English too, doesn't always happen like that on some sets of other shows.
You probably won't get an English copy of the book. It was exclusively produced for this set and as far as I know it is not planned to sell it seperately.
I was already thinking about ordering this box, but 200 Euros is still some money. But after seeing this.. Ok, take my money. Just ordered it. I guess I need to order a bluray Player, too.
Love it! I got it for Christmas and it’s amazing 🥰 200€ is really heavy though but totally worth it imo! Sadly, Universal didn’t let them put Knight Rider 2008 on it - they have the BluRays printed but aren’t allowed to put them in the box 🙄
The 2008 and team knight rider are available to purchase on Amazon video. It's not the same as owning the physical copy of course but atleast its still attainable
@David Officer You can get knight rider 2000 on DVD. It also came in the old DVD set. I have 2 copies of Kr2000. Came with the DVD set and the blu ray japanese set. This box set is cool for all the extra goodies tho. But too pricey. If they make a US release, I would def get it. They just brought the Altaya knight rider model car over to the US recently so this set could get a release as well. Might be some time tho
Wow - isn´t this fantastic? A real treat! Many thanks for introducing it to us. The design is just gorgeous and the posters... mmmm. And now we can look forward to your commentaries ! But first of all enjoy the set and may your research be fruitful.
I love Knight Rider and I have a feeling that Shout Factory will be the next company who will take a shot at releasing KR in the US which would be very interesting.

Some sad news, Actress Carole Cook has passed away, among many rolls she played, Knight Rider fans would remember her for her character of Sen. Maggie Flynn in the episode "Just my bill", R.I.P Carole Cook
Speaking of the sound-alikes: when I listen to the songs in the first season, it sounds like they used a lot of the original versions. Especially when it comes to Fleetwood Mac. Can you guys confirm that? Maybe they switched to sound-alikes when Don Peake took over from Stu Phillips?
I never heard an original Fleetwood Mac recording on the show, even when it was new. But those Fleetwood Mac covers had a better than average soundalike. I would say the earlier soundalikes had a bit more care put into their production to really capture the original sound. Later ones were really obvious. Sometimes comically obvious.
I just got my set last week. And I noticed that in season 1 Deadly Maneuvers in the intro, it has the sound effects of KITT' engine racing by and the scanner sound. All of the releases I have, the DVDs from 2004 and the last Blu Ray set before this one did not have the sound effects, just the music. The sound effects didn't start coming in until later in the season on those earlier releases. But this one has it right after the pilot. Did it have the sound effects in the intro in season 1 right after the pilot when it first aired? I was a baby at that time so I never saw Season 1 when it first aired.
just ordered it. really had to think about getting. is the Bonus Blu-ray with brand new world exclusive interviews and featurettes* (HD, approx. 3 hours): all brand new .
I know in syndication the "Knight Of the Drones" 'hybrid' opening was aired because I distinctly remember the Season 3/4 dash not being shown in the opening. I believe this was USA Network
I think this in combination with the recalled DVD set are t he best ways to experience the show. There's A LOT of missing audio in general that wasn't dubbed in for one of the seasons so you'd hear the actual trans am door being closed, squibs and missing vehicle sfx just to name a few
Joe, thank you for bringing this set to our attention ordered mine last weekend and I can't believe how stars align so perfectly but William daniels is gonna be at planet comic con this year and I plan to have him sign it🤩.
My first thought was I don't want it because I was gifted the American blu ray set for Christmas last year, but hearing it has the other shows, namely Team Knight Rider? This is a buy.
just got this and I was shocked that it's still available in June of 2023 from turbine this long after release so if you still want it try and order it asap
Thank you for reviewing this truly impressive release. From what you've shown, my only gripes are that the thick book and disc titles are only available in German - do you know if the actual screen menus can be translated to English? I really the posters and smaller props, plus having a superior video copy of "Knight Rider 2000" is a plus (I've heard the "2010" film doesn't resemble the show at all). At $223 its a little steep, but for everything included I'd gladly save up for it, especially with the missing music being corrected. I was a huge fan of Michael & KITT as a kid, so reliving these episodes in their proper form would be awesome.
I took the plunge and purchased this set. Man, it is not cheap. Once I found out that less then 4,000 of these sets are going to be made I had to do it, plus the fact that it is very likely that this is the best the show will ever look. I definitely wouldn't want to see some of these ending up on eBay for 3x the price.
I definitely want to buy that. I already have the blu ray box set for the original series and I have the 2008 series on dvd. I wanted to buy the 2008 series on blu ray but I think it's only on dvd. I live in Ireland so I should have no problem getting this set imported.
from Turbine Medien 👌🏻 Yes and we loved Davids Music here in Germany during the 90s. German TV channel arte showed a great documentary about David Hasselhoff in which he told about his performance at the Berlin Wall. And after that, when he returned to the Baywatch set, they asked him what he did on new years eve. So he told them about this event. He was a big act for us in germany. So didn’t he get to much response and respect in the US?
PS: is the longer GOLIATH preview that is allegedly absent (or, that is present in a shorter version) really the actual pre-episode teaser? Can it be that the (longer) TV spot just got confused for it?
My Millcreek DVDs have the music in Dead of Knight where they were in the original airings. Knight of The Drones, however, wasn't the original version. It was the syndicated version, where footage was missing, and the commercial break sequence was the KTLA version, where they added their own breaks in the episode. Edit: Maybe not. I don't remember When Doves Cry at all. I never did get to see Knight Rider 2010 back in the 90s when it aired on TV when I was a kid. I also never got to see all of TKR either. Something like this would be awesome to own. I want it.
I really want this set since I saw it on your Instagram. I know someone who is originally from Germany and got married there over the summer and I've already dropped some not-so-subtle hints to see if he could get it for me since much of his family are there.
Sorry to say this guys. This is best fucking set I have seen in years. I am very keen to buy this now. Thank you so so much Joe for this fantastic review of this German boxset.
Fantastic Set. I never realised some of the audio in episodes had been replaced. I have the UK "Fully Restored Hi-Def" Collection by "Fabulous" and wonder if the audio was altered on this edition and how it compares ? (Also I think I noticed this edition is in DTS-HD and mine is in Dolby Digital 2.0) I presume the actual picture transfer is similar or was it remastered again?
According to a lot of people, the wrong black levels were set but I never noticed it as I watch it on a projector screen not a tv. The US bluray didn't suffer but might have had less discs (more compression) and knight of the drones was the syndicated episode missing parts of kitt' reveal of new dash. Turbines negative is straight from universal. There are the odd pop and line possibly from the film age or in the camera lens. I'm still on season 1. On the whole it's very good
The UK Fabulous release was a botched job. It had incorrect black levels which made the picture very dark. I used to own that set but got rid of. Trust me this is a revelation compared to UK release. Also avoid UK Fabulous release of The Hulk and Miami Vice. Same issue's. Their release of A Team and Magnum PI are fine though
Sadly you didn't flip the set over to show the Semi on the opposite end. That is quite a nice set indeed! I hope to get a copy soon, at 200 Euros it's not bad at all. 😃
They put even more effort in than you think. As you might be aware in Germany we are dubbing our series and movies and due to the fact that they cut out the parts before the commercial breaks a lot of the German dubbing got lost as well. They actually pieced the German audio together and the for few parts that were never dubbed they searched for voice actors that sounded similar and dubbed those scenes as well. Of course this is not really important to people who want to see the series with the original audio but it really shows how much love they put into this. Took them about three years to produce this set iirc.
@@MarkoH01 it seems Germany cares more about Knight Rider than the US judging by the amount of effort put into this vs the releases we have gotten in the past in the US.
@@markraimo1283 We only have such a great set now because of Turbine. Previous KR releases in Germany were even worse than the US releases. We had German TV masters on DVD for season 3 and 4 (with 4 looking pretty bad) and no German blu-ray release at all. Turbine however - as it has been said before - definitely has a heart for collectors and know what they want and what kind of quality they expect. They also know that they don't produce for the mass marked and therefore won't sell these numbers but true fans are willing to pay a bit more making up for it. So they will always go the extra mile and deliver top quality. They are without a doubt my favorite publisher when it comes to DVDs and Blu-rays.
I bought the DVD box sets from 2004ish, and I was so disappointed they replaced almost ALL the music, especially in 'KITT VS FARR'. Too bad this box set is a limited release, I can't find it anywhere, hopefully they do another.
@@Pierre578 They did have the rights and it was originally planned to include KR2008. It was pretty late in the game that Universal had to pull it because there were music licensing issues.
Thats a brilliant box set..a great collectors item for any fan....time for me to buy a blue ray dvd player i think... So as you said Joe,the set contains the original nbc theme tune for KOTD..in order to hide KITTs new dash...great idea, but 5 mins into the episode when KITT is driving around the harbour, even on an 80s size TV you clearly see the new dash..whoops...then when Micheal is leaving the prison, again you see KITTs new dash, double whoops, then when Micheal arrives at peter wong's apartment there's the dash again...cant understand why they would go to the trouble of the revamped tune ,when they show the dash so clearly?,we know the left hand blind drive car ,which had the the S1/2 hero dash in it, was used in the episode ,the Bullett homage scenes,so why they didnt use that car instead, thus hiding the new dash...just a thought...
I'm in the UK and would definitely purchase this IF all the additional elements (besides the discs) was available in English. As wonderful as it looks, I'm not spending £200 + import duties when I won't be able to enjoy the additional items such as the amazing looking book. As much as I love Knight Rider, I don't have the time or inclination to translate the whole book via Google translate, a paragraph at a time! It's 100% clear that a lot of genuine love and effort has gone into this boxset and I think the lack of a native English language release AGAIN shows the total neglect of the Knight Rider property by Universal.
Universal has licensed the show to other countries. In this case Universal Germany decided to give it to a small German company that produces cool fan collections. They put a lot of effort into it and now there is a limited edition box set for Germany. This won't become an unlimited box set for Germany, nor will there be even more effort to translate the book and stuff into English. That's not their aim. Yes, you can hope and wish and dream, but that won't change anything. It's just a small release and it will remain a small release. That's what it was supposed to be from the very beginning. That's what Turbine is known for.
@@GrandmasterA2000 I understand this. It's just sad that for everyone else (by this I really mean English speakers who can't speak German), it shows just what can be done with some real love and effort. Universal and the other commercial rights holders should be ashamed of their efforts compared to this boxset!
@@FatHead1979 I understand your frustration, but the big studios no longer focus on releases like this. Nor do they really care because the collector market is unfortunately declining. I'm just happy Turbine, and some other small companies are still serving collectors (as best they can).

Unless they got the music rights for cheap I can't see the set being cheap even as a bare bones release. Remember artists want paying for every release although they used cover versions some artists will protect lyrics or chop and change with the wind.

Very comprehensive review, well done. I look forward to the day that technology/licensing/time will allow for a 16:9 restoration of media made during this timeline (Knight Rider, Airwolf, A-Team, Magnum, etc.). You see it every now and then for some earlier films that were big money makers for the studios, only time will tell.
You can only make a 16:9 transfer, when the original format is 16:9. KR was filmed in 4:3 format, so you can only cut off material to show less of it in 16:9. I wouldn't buy that.
NO - Do not make 16:9 transfers of something shot/produced for a 4:3 screen! Keep the shows' visual integrity, even if we have to deal with those "pesky" black bars - get over it!
@@GrandmasterA2000 You also occasionally get something where the source is 16:9 film but it was blocked and edited for 4:3. So by including the extra on the sides you get effects that cut off before they get to the edge of the screen, crew/rigging/wires... See Buffy for a big example.

I'm 1m14s into this and it's already the best thing I've seen on UA-cam in years
Hi mate, you won't believe it, but I was hanging out with Turbine Medien CEO Phil last week here in Münster Germany. We had a meeting at his office and of course we talked about the Knight Rider release. We met for an interview and Phil told me a lot about the upcoming releases. Greetz from Germany, Basti 🙋♂️
Great Video. He forgot to note that the set is Limited to 3939 Copys and they don't make more then that. Happy that I got my one at home. 😎
The company's website still lists it as being in stock.
That is about as good as a Knight Rider set can ever be isn't it? - Gorgeous. I'm kinda jealous.
The spines do compose themselves to a frontal image of KITT, too.
The backs of a couple of seasons do show the side of the semi trailer... (look at the interactive "What's in the Box" link I posted in the comments....
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I can't wait for mine to arrive.
I am from Austria, speak German and have also ordered this box. Turbine has done its best work again
I ordered this set after watching this video. I re-watched Knight of the Drones and was surprised at how much of this episode was missing from the Mill Creek set. There was a scene after Bonnie goes missing where KITT showed off some of his new upgrades to Michael and Devon.
Thank you for the link, Joe! 👍 This is the best 200,- € ever spent! Such a shame that this was never released in the United States.
I'm glad you're enjoying seeing this again on Blu-ray. As for me and my eyesight, I can settle for the DVDs 😎
Great review of your experience! Hope you enjoy it.
@@KnightRiderHistoriansOfficial I seem to have encountered one problem. All of the discs seem to be region-free and work in my bluray player except one: the TKR complete series disc. :( I am trying to find a way around this, but so far, no luck.

@@GrandmasterA2000 That does not work for me. It just kicks me out completely to the Bluray Player menu.

I'm finally getting around to watching the Bonus Features disc. One of the archival interview videos "Knight Rider - Under The Hood" has Joe in it.
This needs to be released in the UK and the US. It looks amazing.
Turbine ships everywhere.

After years of waiting there finally is a German Blu Ray box. I am happy.
Greetings from Germany!
This is an amazing set. And I especially appreciate it that it's complete with all the sequels.
Not all the sequels not even the Spin off… a lot is still missing
@@joe666b Yes, some other content is still missing. But I think this set really delivers where it counts, for most fans. The original show was given much care and love. And the total package is absolutely phenomenal. This was a first class effort, from Turbine.
@@christopherbrown5023 i totally agree..otherwise I wouldn’t have reliefed myself of these 200€
Of everything, I'm glad they kept the 4:3.
I just checked my digitized WWOR episodes - and you are correct! NICE memory!!
@@KnightRiderHistoriansOfficial yes and thanks!! It was always one of my favorite episodes, I used to recognize it by the opening!
What a great box set, Germany loves physical media & often releases high quality blu ray sets that we don't get.☹️
Well damn you I just ordered this.
OK, wow...
I just ordered my copy, I just find that "everything everything" boxes sooo cool!
It arrived today, I am really looking forward to dive deep into this one :)
@@MarkoH01 I'm not expecting it, would be nice though. I'm using the Google translate app. Few pages at a time, better than nothing.

200€ is really heavy though but totally worth it imo! Sadly, Universal didn’t let them put Knight Rider 2008 on it - they have the BluRays printed but aren’t allowed to put them in the box 🙄
was it in german with the ability to have english or the other way around
@@sd2go It was stated early in the video that the discs are dual language audio, everything else i.e. the book etc is German language only.

Some sad news, Actress Carole Cook has passed away, among many rolls she played, Knight Rider fans would remember her for her character of Sen. Maggie Flynn in the episode "Just my bill",
R.I.P Carole Cook
Might just have to order the set. Thanks for showing it to us.
That’s is a awesome box set, I bought one for myself, awesome video my friend, thank you for sharing 👍👍
I just ordered mine from Turbine! I'm so looking forward to getting it!
Thanks for posting this. I just bought it after your review.
I think this in combination with the recalled DVD set are t he best ways to experience the show.
There's A LOT of missing audio in general that wasn't dubbed in for one of the seasons so you'd hear the actual trans am door being closed, squibs and missing vehicle sfx just to name a few
All in a few early episodes in season 3
I actually have that DVD set with the missing audio sound effects.
Will be looking into that as I've never seen team Knight Rider just hope it's available for the UK Market!
That Prince song still sounds like a cover version you hear instore; or it's been slowed down. Great video and boy oh boy, do I miss the 80s.
That’s cos it is still a cover version.
Awesome Work Joe, Thanks 👍👍👍😀 Greetings from Helsinki, Finland 🇫🇮🇺🇸🇫🇮🇺🇸🇫🇮🇺🇸
I definitely want to buy that. I already have the blu ray box set for the original series and I have the 2008 series on dvd. I wanted to buy the 2008 series on blu ray but I think it's only on dvd.
I live in Ireland so I should have no problem getting this set imported.
The 2008 series is available on Blu-ray from Japan but it is out of print and hard to find.
from Turbine Medien 👌🏻 Yes and we loved Davids Music here in Germany during the 90s.
Wow that is great! Someone familiar with the show actually put that together. Shame it's not released in America
Turbine ships to US.
PS: is the longer GOLIATH preview that is allegedly absent (or, that is present in a shorter version) really the actual pre-episode teaser? Can it be that the (longer) TV spot just got confused for it?
There never was a longer Goliath teaser. It was a TV promo preview. So the Blu-ray has nothing missing.
Definitely gotta grab this set at some point - it looks gorgeous and has so many cool physical goodies.
It's a strictly limited edition. So "at some point" is now or never 😉
My Millcreek DVDs have the music in Dead of Knight where they were in the original airings.
It should be released as a full English version! So that we can get it in the UK and also for America.
Got mine in today!
just ordered mine :D
Awesome Blu-Ray box set, they've really put great effort for this one 🙂
@@MarkoH01 I agree to 100% 😎

It was planned but they didn’t get the right to kr08

You could always crop the visible image to get a 16:9 ratio. But WHY would anyone do that?
NO - Do not make 16:9 transfers of something shot/produced for a 4:3 screen! Keep the shows' visual integrity, even if we have to deal with those "pesky" black bars - get over it!
@@GrandmasterA2000 You also occasionally get something where the source is 16:9 film but it was blocked and edited for 4:3. So by including the extra on the sides you get effects that cut off before they get to the edge of the screen, crew/rigging/wires... See Buffy for a big example.
@@hiromasaki Read my first sentence 😉 But that's not the case for Knight Rider...
