    I’m an apprentice and not every Master electrician has the time nor the Patience to explain everything in detail like you do in your videos, it’s all coming together in my head and I love learning something new everyday thanks to U!
    Blessings brothers keep it up!

    I just got accepted back into a second year apprentice after 5 years "break" of being involved with a crappy company. Went into medical for the last 5 years... now I'm going back into electrical. The way you explain things and just the referencing to the uglies book is amazing it got the old cobwebs out of the gears and start getting my mind going. I literally start this Monday and I am excited, thank you.

    1:13 And I thought I was already in love with this channel, perfect reference! Also, I'm in Pre-Apprenticeship classes rn, and Ugly's booklets are the very first and most important thing we got as a class. I cannot stress how handy this book has been whenever I thought I forgot how to do something, just look in the book find what I forgot and continue on.

    I just wanna say how much I appreciate you. I bought a flip house and so far I have found a ton of weird do it yourself wiring. The bathroom was a switched neutral for one light and the way they wired it was wrong. and when I went to add another light your videos walked me through how to undo what they did to make it all work the way I wanted. Thanks for all the hard work!

    Just wanted to say Thank You!!!! You're information is making my professional life so much better!! I am an electrical estimator for a construction company after being a retail manager for over 20 years. It has been a struggle to cross into the electrical estimating field without ever doing anything electrical. Your materials videos, electrical theory, and how to install pieces is bringing it all together for me! You rock!!!! I love the videos; please keep them coming!!!!!

    Dustin, Another awesome video. I too worked for a 48 state contractor from St. Louis. I used to give everyone in the design dept Uglys books. Another tool I handed out was SqD motor slide rules. They are extremely useful as well. Suggestion, you could do a video on calculating branch circuit loads, then applying the breaker and conductor sizing. This could then take you to sizing a sub panel based on the feeder calculations. Just a thought. Respectfully, Kevin

    I remember the first time I saw one, I was a new to the trade, straight out of a not very good trade school on an industrial job. I walked in on a discussion on how to wire 3 ways, these were all industrial guys with years of experience using contactors to control lights 3 ways were something some of them had never used, so they were all standing around with their Uglys out trying to figure it out. Newby walks in and tells them how to do it, dumb should have just told them I could do it, as they sent most of us home that afternoon because they were switching over to main power and the only guys who staid other than the power crew was the guys wiring the three ways.
    I bought one as soon as soon as I could find one, 22 years ago you had to know where to buy them as soon as I found one it went into my tool kit and there has been one there ever since. Reading the comments I see there is now an Ap hmm

    One thing I’m very disappointed that it doesn’t have is a wire phase/ color to number chart for when it’s time to pull in wire to the panels. I was very surprised when I was looking through it that it didn’t have it as it’s definitely a reference that’s more used than some of the other things in there. I contacted uglys about it but didn’t get a response. Not that phasing takes a long time, but when you’re pulling in 5 or 6 circuits at a time and have 7 panels to pull into it makes it easier to be able to see instantly what colors you need to stack.

    Regarding your example of equipment ground, my understanding is that you can share ground wires (only) between two circuits through a raceway. For example if you ran a 15A circuit and a 20A circuit in conduit, you could share the ground. If you do that, do you add the amperages of both circuits together to get the correct ground wire size from the table shown at 9:00? Or, since the ground would rarely be called on to carry short circuit current for both circuits at the same time, would you use the ground size for only the bigger of the two circuits?

    You make great videos and content related to our trade. Keep up the great work. I do take offence to calling the 3rd and 4th year apprentices as wrench turners. I’m a 4th year, running mid 90s on all 3 years, and I can teach some journeymen on theory they’ve forgotten. I’m most definitely not a glorified wrench turner. I agree, 1st and 2nd year we were educated labourers to a certain degree, but 3rd and 4th, especially in the industrial trade, we are noteworthy electricians.

    Gotta remember that if you are putting a lot of conductors in a conduit you need to de-rate the ampacity of conductors in said conduit. Knowing how to de-rate conductors is a good skill to have. Gotta consider the temp rating of termination points in equipment, ambient temp, and as I mentioned # of conductors in a conduit.

    for instance when you calculate box fill for an easy example 12 conductors count as 2.25 meaning 12/2 = 5.50
    meaning 3 12/2 wires (16.50) would create a box fill violation in an 18 cubic inch box if there was a device installed as well. The device = 2. So 16.50 + 2 > 18 cubic inch box... point being grounds dont count as conductors for fills or correct me if im wrong.

    I thought the grounding electrode conductor shouldn’t be larger than #6 copper.
    Only reason for it to be sized different if it runs continuous to water main unbroken?

    • @seanile
      @seanile 3 роки тому

      I had the same thought. The electrode is only to keep system neutral at the same potential as Earth, such as bleeding off lightning induced voltage, it is not meat to be a return path to the source so no need to be larger than #6.

    @jackovoltraids5937 5 років тому +1

    I'm not an electrician, but (at about 17:00) why would the equipment ground be counted as a conductor? Sure it may be at some point, but if that's the case, a conduit that's one wire over is the least of your worries.

    • @jackovoltraids5937
      @jackovoltraids5937 5 років тому +1

      BTW love the show. I wish it was something I'd discovered before I rewired my house in conduit(it's solid brick from 1890s). I'm a bit of an autodidact and a perfectionist. So I did a Ton! of research beforehand. Which included buying a used 2017 NEC book (And reading it! Mostly.) So I knew lots on this already, but not all tho. You've helped fill in some gaps in my knowledge. Plus I gotta say, damn it's nice hearing it explained out loud! quite well I might add, rather than reading a desert dry code book!
      Seriously, idk if it's not wanting to do a that work or just sticking to the tradition (and of course, still, not having to do all that work) but the code needs an overhaul. Not that it's ineffective, but that it could be more effective in conveying the knowledge if presented more user-friendly. Not that it's incomplete, it does lack certain reinforcements on subjects. Like, there are glaring gaps in even the definitions that require unnecessary deductions to be made. While you should be able to think critically about what or why this means that, it's just tripping you up when you can't find a confirmation that the answer you've reasoned is correct. I probably know 60% of what I know from other people's interpretation I googled when I got stuck. Often they didn't show the proof I was looking for, but just kinda was like "yep, everyone else has come to the same conclusion, it's not been an issue for them" but got me that's an issue! I spent a few nights tracking down answers that eluded the community of actual electricians too busy to bother, understandable. While the guys that were paid to define and write it, didn't.. I've tangented here. Keep up the great work! You're helping me learn the trade before I've even gone to apply for apprenticeship. Thanks Dustin!

    • @andrewalvarez4975
      @andrewalvarez4975 5 років тому +1

      It has to do with the fact that the wire itself takes up space in the conduit and you have to count that or else the they're to many wires for the conduit size

    • @jackovoltraids5937
      @jackovoltraids5937 5 років тому +1

      I thought the limit was at most the fill capacity of a size/type conduit determined by the most current, no pun, NEC book, but may go lower depending on whether the rating requirements of: X. gauge size conductors, within A. size/type conduit, under N. set of conditions; would meet both the requirements for the actual circuit and the NEC. Not just the fill capacity. Like, 3/4” emt will fit 16 individual 12 gauge THHN, but the 8 circuits possible from the 16 current carrying conductors (not requiring/counting a ground) exceeds the maximum if all 8 circuits are on their own 20 amp breaker. Other factors which I'm not even going to get into, may also limit the number CCC! (Other factors would be like temperature and probably something else really big and obvious I'm not going to bother looking up here either.)

    Those are great to have, I also tell any apprentice to read through the code book alittle everyday to get familiar with it sounds crazy but if you read over a few times you will surprised how much you remember. I mean it's the electrical bible we need to know it
