The movie ends ambiguously on purpose. The playwright said he didn't want it to be clear, he wanted to leave the audience with doubt. He was never "proven innocent."
This movie was heartbreaking. She knows that she’s ultimately powerless to prevent him from just being transferred and harming another child. All she could do was protect THIS child and get him out of HER parish, but she knows he’ll just do it again.
I think that’s exactly what John Patrick Shanley (writer/director) intended. He wrote the play after the pedophile priest scandal broke, so he knew it was not only real, but worse than imagined. What he’s saying isn’t “Those poor priests could have been innocent” or “What a witch hunt”, but “Look at how the Church enabled pedophiles for decades”. Sr. Aloysius never waivers on Fr. Flynn’s guilt. Her doubts are about the faith and hierarchy she’s a part of.
You know what I love about this movie? It's not dull, or preachy. It's surprisingly nerve-wracking, and it doesn't spell anything out for you. I love stories like that, where there's a constant blur .
Of course this priest is guilty. But that's not the point of the story at all. The sister's 'doubt' is why she had to move so far away from God and the teachings of the Church, to stalk her prey like an animal. That's why she weeps at the movie's end -- she caught her prey, but he wasn't even punished. And she's not even sure of her own religious beliefs anymore. Obviously stupendous acting by everyone. And Streep deserved an Oscar for this role much more than her turn as Margaret Thatcher.
In an interview with the author of the play he said that the overall theme is supposed to be the destructive power of certainty. So yes she may have caught her pray, but at great cost, and still there is no way to really know if he was guilty as he never properly confessed.
Denver Britto If you have a moment, look up Shanley’s recent interviews about the opera, ‘Doubt,’ which he wrote based on the same story. He makes it very clear that Flynn is guilty, and that the younger nun doesn’t believe his excuses either. The concept of doubt was that ‘Sister Streep’ betrayed her beliefs and vows while catching him.
Father Flynn is using Sister Aloysius's greatest fears against her. He's bringing up things she told him in confession. She's scared that in pursuing the world's monsters, she's lost her faith and her hope of salvation. He threatens her outright with excommunication and Purgatory. You can see, deep down, how terrified she is, standing defiantly in the face of religious authority and perhaps God Himself. She's resolute despite truly believing and trembling at the thought that maybe the gates of Heaven are closing before her.
There's a particularly savvy in that when she said "I will step outside the church if that's what needs to be done, 'til the _door_ should shut behind me! I will do what needs to be done, though I'm damned to Hell!" The door was a reference to the gates of heaven. Even though she believes going after the predator will cost her her own salvation, she still chose to go against the odds to persecute the priest for being a molester. Even if he taunted her about her own mortal sins, she didn't falter. I hope there are a lot of people like her in the world who has the courage to fight abuse in spite of her own doubts and mistakes
But it was alright for her to try to destroy his career and his life before he started to fight back? When she had no evidence and just said that "she knows people". Do us a favor and grow up.

She'd been a nun for a long time so she can sniff out the pedos... guilty or not he resigned which meant he had the inclination... superb acting by Meryl
You guys have completely missed the point of the film. There are times in life where you simply don't know what is true. He may have been a pedophile, he may have not. Nobody knows, including sister Aloysius. So let's focus on what we DO know. Sister Aloysius acts as if she DOES know. She causes destruction to the priests life without knowing if he even did it, forcing him to resign. This is a fundamentally evil way to act. There is a reason courts follow a process. Lawyers are assigned even to guilty parties etc. You cannot take the law into your hands and destroy someone's life just based on your doubts. Whether or not he is guilty is completely besides the point of the film. The film is called Doubt. It highlights the mass destruction you can cause to someone based on something as small as doubt.
the point is not whether or not he did it-it was purposefully constructed to be ambiguous. Father Flynn did not "do it" or not, thats not how the play was constructed. The beauty behind it is why its ambiguous. Its the clash between Aloysius's faith that Flynn did it yet her lack of proof. It almost serves as a metaphor for their religious natures if you think about it. The doubt itself is the essence of the play, not whether or not he did or did not molest the boy.
@IfYouDisagreeYouAreWrong You're an dolt. I'm not even religious and just because faith requires belief, does not mean it's all a scam. I am spiritual in a sense. Open to many things actually like everyone should be. And I believe in all science, which is why I know some of science is also faith. Trying to explain why gravity doesn't behave like it should in space is one examples of faith. Another is how everything even began. There are many theories. None fact. You want to try and understand, go deep into some quantum physics. No one has the answers, everything requires some faith.
can't wait for movie clip to upload August Osage County clips. Meryl's got a lot of mesmerizing screams in it. The one towards Abigail Breslin was my favorite. So raw.
This and other scenes with Philip Seymour Hoffman always make me sad, even as I marvel at his acting. He died so young, and had so much greatness ahead of him. There were so many great roles in him that we will never see. Imagine him as an older actor, playing King Lear. Or Falstaff. What a loss.
My deal with the priest is that while he defended himself or worded himself around what was being directed at him, he never gave us a reason not to suspect that he did anything wrong. This scene proves it too, because he gets bent all out of shape and doesn't come clean on whatever he may have done. It didn't even have to be with Donald. Just the fact that he has Meryl on his tail the way he does, makes him very uncomfortable if he is living an alternative lifestyle, and Donald unfortunately in the priest's case was the catalyst that started all the problems for him. She said this was his third parish within the last five years. I wonder why? Perhaps similar things happened back at the other two. Like someone else said, if the pastor is gay he will naturally cover for him, while a nun who may have been similar to Meryl's character would have told her everything. Either way, we as the audience will never get a clear picture on what happened, hence the title "Doubt", but I still think he did something. If not he wouldn't have also mentioned 'Mortal sins' like someone else mentioned. That could be confirming he did something wrong to the boy, or he himself is living a foul life. Or he used that on Meryl to make her see that despite what he may or may not have done, she is not perfect either.
Usually there is that one standout scene in a movie where you just are blown away and say OSCAR,,,in The Hours it was the train station scene and in Doubt it was this scene right here unfortunately Meryl didnt win like Nicole did
Meryl Streep, Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Viola Davis brought their A game to this movie! I can watch Doubt on a loop! This scene is what you get when you just let great actors act. ❤️🔥
0:50-0:52 even the details that Philip Seymour Hoffman shaking he doesn’t even know what he wants to write anymore knowing that he’s confronted by the Sister
Goddamn this acting is terrifying. Streep portrayed so many layers in this one scene; it is absolutely incredible. No one should be this good. And yet, we also have Viola Davis.
the film is more about meryl streep's doubt as a person and its more of a character study on her rather than a mystery of whether he molested the boy or not.
The great thing about this movie, apart from the brilliance in acting, is your still left with doubt, did he?or didn’t he? We are intentionally left with a possibility of doubt.
At first, I was in doubt but it's clear as day that he's guilty. When she threatened to go to his other parishes, he got so worked up. If he was so certain he was clean, he wouldn't have been so upset at that. Also the question he asked if she had never sinned just sealed the deal. He knew he was caught and was trying to gain sympathy from her.
I can never make my mind either way I think that is a valid interpretation he doesn’t to be exposed for abusing boys but on the other hand considering the social stigma homosexuality had at the time he may have also been trying to avoid being outed if someone had found out for whatever reason at another parish and agreed to keep quiet if he left. Similarly he could be trying to manipulate her sympathy for abuse but he also could have been appealing that everyone has “sin” struggle they with and for that reason we be careful how we judge/treat another eg he who is without sin let him cast the first stone. I think that’s makes this film so compelling how messy it.
Yeah. Spotlight made me understand this movie better. Sister Aloysius is right all along and I can relate to her feeling of doubt towards the Church...
Jo Nathan You're quite right. Shanley wrote an opera in recent years of the same story. He said he needed to make it clearer that the priest was guilty and the sister had him pegged all along. But in trying to catch him, she lost her faith in the church and even in God. So she's left at the end with nothing. That's the doubt -- was it worth it??
I never thought the story was about Flynn's guilt. I thought he was guilty from the get-go. I thought it was how far Sister A had strayed from the Church to catch him. Her breakdown: she won, but really lost, she had strayed so far from God. And Flynn got a promotion anyway. Shanley, who wrote the story and new opera libretto, says that Sister James, while agreeing with Flynn in his plea for innocence, is actually betrayed by music that suggests just the opposite. She doesn't believe him at all.
Notice, he did not refute what she was saying. But kept insisting she had no right to step outside the church or to press the issue. If he was innocent he would have said so
Everything in this scene is fantastic! Even the crucifix should have won an Oscar.

I love this scene for some reason. The strength of her conviction even as "the door of the church shuts behind" is so compelling.
this is such a ballet of acting beauty
She'd been a nun for a long time so she can sniff out the pedos... guilty or not he resigned which meant he had the inclination... superb acting by Meryl
Did you miss the ending of the movie where she broke down and said she wasn't sure if she did the right thing?
@@brianweber4616 her doubt wasn’t concerning that. She has doubts because he was promoted
I haven't forgotten this film since I watched when I was 14.
I have the play and film and I adore both. What a truly remarkable and overlooked film.
Streep is a godsend. I love how she can get intense without overacting. A true master of her craft.
Seymour was a truly and gifted actor and with Streep made it a iconic scene!!
I think "Doubt" is her second-greatest perfomance, next to "Sophie's Choice."
the point is not whether or not he did it-it was purposefully constructed to be ambiguous.
So raw.
Very convincing scene/conversation.....both SUPERB actors!
This scene is mesmerizing. A class in acting
Two absolutely amazing actors 1 on 1. A pure, once in a lifetime treat.
I’m so astounded at meryls acting! She can be goofy and serious at the same time!
Meryl Streep, Meryl Streep, Meryl Streep!!!!! That woman is simply IMMORTAL!!!!!!!!
what an accent she uses here… how does she do this! Stellar!
+timothyj1966 it´s unbelievable. She is the greatest actress ever!
+timothyj1966
It's her normal New Jersey accent, just diluted with a nerdy, conservative flow. That's typical of nuns.
+Rita Alber This is a Bronx accent, not a Jersey accent.
Wilson Gavin
Not a Bronx accent whatsoever!
New York
This and other scenes with Philip Seymour Hoffman always make me sad, even as I marvel at his acting. He died so young, and had so much greatness ahead of him. There were so many great roles in him that we will never see. Imagine him as an older actor, playing King Lear. Or Falstaff. What a loss.
Greatest acting I have ever seen by an actress.
This scene is pure gold rip phil
the best fight scene of 2000-2019. hands down.
So sad.... :( One of my favourite actors too...
truly, she invokes characters like no other
My deal with the priest is that while he defended himself or worded himself around what was being directed at him, he never gave us a reason not to suspect that he did anything wrong.
Some of the best acting I've ever seen.
.....and this is what's called GOOD acting.....OUTSTANDING acting!!!
Conviction to the core.
0:50-0:52 even the details that Philip Seymour Hoffman shaking he doesn’t even know what he wants to write anymore knowing that he’s confronted by the Sister
This have been one of the strongest acting i’ ve ever seen in my Life
Many great actors in many great movies but the day we lost Philip Seymor Hoffman, I Miss Him. He left us too soon. R I P. Mr. Hoffman
Goddamn this acting is terrifying.
Streep portrayed so many layers in this one scene; it is absolutely incredible. No one should be this good. And yet, we also have Viola Davis.
In my opinion....streeps best passionate scene. Wow. I always loved her. She played traditional nun perfectly. And her passion was expressed
R.I.P. Philip Seymour Hoffman. How is it that so many greats always have so many fights with life? Sad!
I normally don't care for Meryl Streep at all, but she was outstanding in this film. For me, by far her best performance.
the film is more about meryl streep's doubt as a person and its more of a character study on her rather than a mystery of whether he molested the boy or not.
This part is so intense I can feel the priest's guilt and sister's justice. They both did good in their roles.
Kinda sad that Philip died, this scene really stand out from the rest. He and Meryl Streep both had great chemistry!
If every nun could be as brave and moral
I have watched this countless times. One of my all-time favorite film scenes.
Yeah. Spotlight made me understand this movie better. Sister Aloysius is right all along and I can relate to her feeling of doubt towards the Church...
Jo Nathan you're so wrong...
Dominika Molisak Not all things wrong are necessarily bad either. By lying and accusing, Sister Aloysius had chosen the lesser of 2 evils.
Dominika Molisak You might want to check out Shanley's statements when he recently wrote the opera, 'Doubt.'
Dave Glo thank you,I will!
When Meryl won SAG for this, i was crying like a child. BEST!
Meryl should've won the Oscar for this. Her performance in this almost tops Sophie's Choice.
This scene just blows me away! Amazing acting!
Notice, he did not refute what she was saying. But kept insisting she had no right to step outside the church or to press the issue. If he was innocent he would have said so
This movie is the definition of perfection. Lived everything about it.
