Walking Los Angeles : Watts
Вставка
- Опубліковано 18 жов 2024
- I walk through the neighborhood of Watts, located in Los Angeles, CA. Watts is located within the South LA region, bordering Lynwood and South Gate to the South. I start off showing the Watts Towers, built by Simon Rodia and taking 33 years to complete. I then walk through the neighborhood to explore the area and make my way to the Willowbrook - Rosa Parks Metro station.

Watts Towers is stunning. The work of an immigrant with an American dream of a better life and the struggles to make a difference by creating folk art for all to enjoy. Thank you AK for visiting and sharing this wonderful landmark
Love the Watts Towers! There is so much detail and creativity put into them and it really shows!
@@ActionKid You should do historic filipino town. Just a thought.
Interesting walk. Watts Towers reminds me of Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, it also has a Gaudi feel too.
"OK baby, do you thing." haha Such a nice lady you chatted with at the park.
It has been compared to Gaudi but Rodia was inspired by his hometown festival parade when he made them
I thought the same thing!!
Same here, got that Gaudi vibe. Have you ever been to the Sagrada Familia? I have, it's breathtakingly beautiful. Also park Guell, stunning. I love the mosaic in the park and in some buildings in Barcelona. I might go see it this year as well. Going to a town near Barcelona in September.
I enjoyed learning about Watts Towers. Mr. Rodia was very artistic. I found it very amazing AK and thankyou for taking us there.😊
When my Mother as a Child would go with her Grandfather to bring items for making of the Tower. She said the Two men would have Coffee and my Mom would play with his Cat. She is 80 years old now. Thank you for this Video.
Yay, you visited the Watt Towers!! This is still on my to-visit list, and I'm so glad the community preserved Mr. Rodia's artwork. The lady is so friendly and full of positive vibes. 🥰
Yes, you need to visit sometime!
Thanks for showing us this artistic place and around the neighborhood! Fascinating and cool.
This is such a chill and enjoyable walk. Awesome work, AK.
Thank you
Nice walking tour. Jordan’s has been closed for years. The 33 bus used to come through there before Metrorail was built. It’s a dangerous corner because people think that the train is not close because it can’t be seen and they can beat it across the street but it will come up on you quickly.
Loved the towers , a labor of love for his community , thank you for sharing your visit here 😀
Wish you were also able to tour Charles R. Drew Univ, which is a historically black university (HBCU). It’s right around the corner from the metro station. Thanks for showing us parts of Watts.
Kudos, Ken. Even John Hicks was wary of cycling his BMX in Watts.
I live in CA and didn't even know this tower existed...Wow!!
This Watts video is amazing AK, Thank you for doing this video 👍
You are a daring soul AK, I worked up the street at WCLO for a few years. I did not know the history that you presented. Did not know about Angel. Although i have attended many art openings, lectures, etc. Also up the street is Jordan Downs, one of the biggest public Housing.
Watts Towers, Interesting, Reminds me of Barcelona. Thanks for showing us different parts of the LA area. Hey to your new friends, take care.
Wow that's awesome that these art tower's are still standing today in 2021!
I like both of videos you did from California thank you X and kit
Very amazing art work and work ethic he had.
That's an amazing place - nice To discover
Beautiful presentation, very extravagant. I wish you success and progress in your work, health, safety and wellness. My thanks, appreciation and respect.💕💞🌹💜
I will always love home! Watts UP baby!!!!
Watts Towers are a must to any visit to L.A. My first job in the summer of 1964 arriving from Philly was delivering telephone books along these streets! Impressive!
Miss Margaret is still waiting on you. I love these kinds of videos actionkid. IT could be dangerous and Im sure you know that.
yes, Rhonda Harrison D-A-N-G-E-R , like going to an unknown place one never has been before, just like Captain Kirk aboard the Enterprise, venturing to 'new worlds", AK could well be our own space traveler alongside Richard Branson, or Elon Musk! AK is so brave and honorable, seemingly aa guy with an abundance of character"The Right Stuff"!
I was 21, just out of the Navy, and living, attending school, and working part time in L.A. by June 1965. I remember the Watts riots like it was yesterday. My best friend at the time was a photographer for the L.A. Times, and he asked me to ride with him to Watts so he could take photos. We drove into Watts on August 12th, parked, and walked about two blocks to where Don was going to take photos. After about 5 minutes we were told to get the hell out of there. When we got back to Don's van, it had been set on fire. We walked until we finally could flag down a cab, went to where Don worked, then I took a bus back to where I was living at the time, which was in Burbank. What a hell of a week that was!!
That's such a horrible time in history for Watts
@@ActionKid It was...glad to see how it is today. I really loved your interaction with that lady sitting on the bench...she was such a sweetheart! Cheers, Action Kid!! :)
You lived it in the 1960's... I lived it in 1992, living a stone's throw from Watts... the documentary "LA92" does a great job of depicting what happened BOTH times 60's and 90's.... and it foreshadows 2020. It came out in 2017.
I was present at last riot\uprising, worked with teens and I went to work the next day. It was eerie, each police car had 4 folks in them. Youth Center was at Vermont\Manchester. The burned shops were still smoldering. I had a Latina friend who was pulled out of her car. Scary, sad, but I understood the dire conditions these families were under. One of my students was one of the 3 who pulled Denny out of his truck and beat him, Antoine.
@@nicklizardo313 Hopefully for that area, those days are behind us.
the watts tower reminds me a bit of the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona Spain, it gives a huge Gaudi vibe
I drove down this street one night always wanted to see this in person being from Dallas always seen this on tv
💖🧚♀️so cool 💚thanks AK 💯🐼💫
I'm a fan of Margaret !
I'm visiting LA this weekend and hoping to visit the towers, is it safe to visit by public transportation?
Margaret is great!😊🙌🏾
She has so much energy!
My respects bro.. I'm planning to visit South Central at my future trip to California
The Watts Towers were designated a National Historic Landmark and a California Historical Landmark on august 17th 1990 so OC we get that video on aug 17 2021! Well done
I'm a local and it wasn't a good idea for you to walk into watts, my friend. Glad you weren't robbed or injured
Amazing creation!
Ahhh... reminds me of home. 👍
It looks alot like Antonio Gaudi art, he made the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona a huge cathedral. And many buildings
Was this filmed using the Nord One+ ?
exciting city🤤🤤
You should've went to Nickerson Gardens in Watts!
u want him dead lmao
Are you crazy? Be careful in some of these areas man it's not for tourist.
FACTS! 💯 I used to take classes at the Maxine Waters Center on Central Ave. back in the mid 90s. I used to be scared to go to class in the mornings! Lol
You absolutely have to know your surroundings, and I never ventured out at night when I was driving. But sometimes it doesn't matter where you are, but who you are and what you look like. I was stopped by a policeman in a very nice section of West Los Angeles a little over a decade or so ago when I used to drive, because he acted like there was NO way I could afford the kind of truck I was driving. What, there was no way I could have a good job which would afford me the monies to buy the kind of truck I was driving? I call what he did harassment, because after I handed him my registration, insurance, license and he ran those items and saw that my truck tags were up to date, he had NO reason to hold me there in my truck for 30 MORE minutes, only to have another police car drive up. The policeman in that other car came over to me and told me that I could go. I was in my early 50's at the time. So for 'some' of us, it doesn't matter where we are, because unfortunately some people have pre-conceived notions of who THEY think you are, and those pre-conceived notions are NOT wholesome, fair or right on THEIR part. I have friends & their kids who've been stopped in certain areas as well for what they tell me and I believe them, was for no really good reason. I believe them because it's happened to ME.
@@shebababy615 They playing for keeps out there lol
What do you mean by "these areas"? The areas where predominantly non-whites live?
@@shebababy615 Yeah, back in the 80s and 90s it was like the Wild West in some neighborhoods. A blind eye was turned to the trafficking of guns and narcotics out of South Central. I hope you are enjoying a career in which you sacrificed so much for.
walk through the projects
I've crashed airplanes into this park at least 10 times in GTA Online. Not on purpose, I just randomly hit the metal art a lot for some reason.
I don’t know why people think south La is a hood it’s a working class area look at Chicago south side or Detroit those are hoods.
So gang banging ain't like it used to be in South Central?
I always wondered why Compton, Inglewood and L.A looked so clean
I grew up with drive-bys on my street, but honestly, I don't remember being all that afraid, day-to-day growing up in South L.A. (besides Junior High).
@@Detroitswagg28 Dude, Compton streets always looked nice compared to other cities/neighborhoods.
@@davidday2373 fasho bro I'm from Detroit and we have clean nice neighborhoods that still get wicked and dirty neighborhoods as well
Dude that is a dangerous part of town.
Was there in the 80's: similar feeling but more Afro and guys hang out at street corners pandering for drugs. Still was friendly but some violence at times in the area due to rivalry.
Pepperidge farm remembers
What are "Afro and guys".
I remember football games against those "more Afro" guys in the late 80's... block versus block...
@@davidday2373 Right. I thought it would be a good idea to go visit in 1985, with a mullet. We had a good time
If you'd gone down side streets - this would have been a found video.
Watts up?
Hey, Watts going on with you maine???
Isnt this a dangerous neighbourhood?
❤❤❤❤
👏👏dope😃😃
where are all the animals?
Did Cain or o dogg ever back to there hood lol
According to the United States Census Bureau the statistics of Watts was 39,593 (1/4/2010). European/Caucasian-American - 0.8%, African/‘Black’-American - 27.9%, Latinx/Latino-American - 69.8%, Asian-American - 0.1%.
I see you blood
Nuestro Pueblo isn't italian it's Spanish, they wrote complete bs on that sign omg
In the citayyyyy, of good ol' Watts
Watts might be a poor neighborhood but it still has a certain charm to it.
Don’t you mean Las Vegas? 😀
where are all the animals?
Juan look in the mirror
That comment was childish and very ignorant.
