  • Putting inexpensive pod lights inside the housing of 6inch off road KC style lights.

    LED POD lights 4pack SPOT: amzn.to/351NWqE
    KC 6" Knock off lights: amzn.to/2TXmzI2
    KC 6"Hilites Daylighter USA MADE: amzn.to/38foYpW
    Milwaukee M12 3in cutoff saw: amzn.to/2Gyrzjd
    Everything in this video was bought and paid for out of my own pocket. Any brand mentions are only because they are what I trust spending my own money on.
    VIDEO THOUGHTS:
    The 18watt LED pods I used were FLOOD lights and a set of four use 72 watts/6 amps vs the 400 watts/34amps the halogen pull. Definitely better light and my alternator gets a huge break. I may put SPOTs in the center two KC lights for an even better illumination area. These 6inch KC style lights give the correct look to older Jeeps and trucks. KC does sell LED inserts and complete housings but expect to spend over $100 each light.

    Bought a set of KC's hid stainless steel housing lights with a pencil beam 10 plus years ago. Killer lights! Luv them. They were 8 or 900 bucks at the time and came with a 23 year warrany no questions asked . Sent them in once already to be refurbished due to yellowing of the lenses. Had to sawsall them out of my bumper due to the main mounting bolt being made from steel and rusted bad enough that i couldn't get them off. Called KC and told them and they told me just cut them out. Got back two brand new units with upgraded stainless mounting bolts . Great company to work with.

    I loved the looonng range beam of my 4 old 150watt sealed beam daylighters, had one burn out and removed one more to keep it even looking. 2 still put out PLENTY of light and agreed they are power hungry. had relayed, fused 8awg to each pair and a 140A alternator. Great job on the retrofit👍old school cool with a touch of modern! I do like the led pods and bars as well. I also used the aux beam pods as reverse lights, just mounted behind the bumper either side of the hitch!

      Those 150watt Halogens put out an insane amount of light. 4 of those is around 50amps draw. 15+ years ago I upgraded to electric cooling fans that pull around 20-30amps, then if I run my heater(20amps) and my headlights(10amps), I'm maxed out with the stock 60amp alternator. I can watch the voltage drop anytime I would turn on the 2 100watt reverse halogens. Obviously a high output alternator is needed even with my LEDs.

    When I moved I had to remove my lights as the truck was shipped and they claimed too tall (yet they later admitted it would have been fine...annoying). Been struggling on finding good looking lights for replacement of my kc daylighters. Thank you so much! Was saving my pennies for that many multi- 100's of $ expense. Now...not! And I use a similar arrangement. 2 floods in my brush guard, 2 floods in the outside top, 2 spots in the middle top, and 2 fogs facing rear from the top. Thus, the floods in the brush guard fill close and wide (coupled with headlights and factory fog), the top floods fill far and wide, the top spots do really far and fill in the gap between the top floods, and the rear, usually don't have on unless I have to back up so I don't blind my buddies, but is similar to what you showed. You do feel it with all those halogens on. Even with the accessory alternator installed.

    Updating my comment. Interesting idea, but I have gotten burned on LED lights in the past. However, I missed the brand name Auxbeam the first time I watched. I have a friend that put Auxbeam on his 1985 Ford F150 ,replacing the sealed beam housings. His headlights are FANTASTIC. Nicely done artwork to use the vintage housings.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  3 роки тому +2

      That's why I didn't just swap bulbs. I don't think you can win by putting led bulbs in a housing made for reflectors. The reflectors are always designed to take a pin point of light from the center of the housing and focus it. These aftermarket replacement bulbs can't place the light source dead center and can't be focused correctly. They scatter the light everywhere. The only way to get LED headlights work in a car is to buy a complete new housing designed for LEDs where all the LEDs face forward. That is the idea with me using these stand alone lights inside the housings. If I would have just bought the LED bulbs to swap in they would have been dismal.
