GOLD COIN FOUND BY AMATEUR METAL DETECTORIST !!!
The full story : This was a life changer of a find ! First let me apologize for not knowing what I had found and for mishandling it 😬, I at this point was just experimenting with metal detecting on the channel and was using a Bounty Hunter Brand detector that sat unused in my closet for a decade . I was still at the level of learning how to detect and knew very little about older American coins, so even when I was digging it up I didn't fully understand the level of the find. It was not something on my bucket list ( because I didn't know they were out there, except old Spanish treasures) , I kept doubting that it was solid gold and even as I began to understand that it was real I had no idea how rare it was to find one, I thought that if I had just dug one it must happen pretty often, again I apologize for my ignorance , but I went home and typed in Gold Coin Found …expecting to see a hundred channels pop up that had found one, and then it sank in ….., so later in the evening ,after the video has long ended ,I sat staring at it understanding what had just happened to me , and that I had captured it on film, and my mind was fully blown.
Answers to questions : Thats my daughter and her mother who came to see what dad was hollering about. yes I still have the coin. No I'm not selling it. No this is not a faked video. The detector ; an old model Bounty Hunter ( not made anymore). Garrett ID #”S68-71( Pop Top ). Mid tone. soil is a river loam alluvial shelf deposit 20 ft deep. Coin was 4-5 inches down. Yes I have searched for more coins at the site.
The site : This area that the coin was found in is now a private campground for a small very rural housing development in the hills of California. I have lived near it for a decade and the locals explain that it was an old small townsite , there was at one time a 1800s wild west bar and there is a crossroads and fording point on the river there .after that it had up to twenty small cabins that family could rent for the weekend to fish and camp, I have since found other coins of the period and many finds that date from the roaring twenties, and there are a lot of follow up vids on this site that I have done since And posted on the channel , I hope you will check them out and remember that crazy things are out there everywhere just waiting to be discovered ! I found an 1847 gold 2.5 dollar coin when I was 12 with my metal detector. Best thing I ever found.

38-55 is a rifle cartridge, .38 inch diameter and 55 grains of powder, Gold doesn't tarnish when under ground or water. Gold coins pulled out of the ocean after 150 years are still shiny as new.
The case shown at 15:54 was a .38 WCF, or 38 caliber (.38 inch) Winchester Center Fire, mfd. by WRA - Winchester Repeating Arms.
Good for you on detecting the Gold Coin. Not many people had $5.00 in 1903. Anyone that did have Gold Coins would rarely lose them.
M dlanor yeah that’s like almost losing $150 bucks and plus in 1933’ the government took away everyone’s gold coins, so it’s rare to find old US gold coins around.

I think a gold coin is on every detectors bucket list, including mine. I've been detecting for 15 + years and my best coin find is a 1958 Ben Franklin half dollar.
Congrats - I am a coin collector and your piece is rather common (1903 - Philadelphia mint) but still worth around $480 after it has been graded and slabbed by either NGC or PCGS.

Dude a couple were walking their dog and stumbled upon a rusty old can filled with gold coins. They took it to a dealer stayed anonymous and the coffee can full of coins were valued @$10 million! They were buried in a metal coffee can that wasn’t smart. What a score man
Those cans were in the ground for a century so I'd say it was a great place to secret them.

I have been a member since 2019!!! :{D I found a 2.5 peso 1944 in a heavy bezel w/ sadly minor mower hit useing my 3 rd AT-Pro came in at solid 52 on the VDI display solid mid tone very sweet sound thought for sure it was a beefy gold ring.
People hunts for years and years and never find a gold coin. Huge Congrats
been detecting for 8 years now. gone to every kinda place you can think of from my own yard to public fairgrounds to private permissions and public sports complexes to super old homestead sites found deep in the woods. 8 years 3 or 4 times a week. Never found a single piece of gold and only found 2 silver quarters and six silver dimes! In 8 years and hundreds upon hundreds of hours spent searching. Best find ever...a religious medallion made of sterling....valued at $16. Just amazing watching these guys who are obviously no better or knowledgeable than myself finding real treasures all over this country including my own local area. Just amazing that a guy should be just simply born under a black cloud and have no luck of any kind other than bad!

One can occasionally find quarters painted red with fingernail polish. The reason is that back in the day companies operated jukeboxes in bars and resturants, and the owner would get a share of the take. The representatives who serviced the machines knew that if the jukebox was playing, customers would keep it playing once it ran out, so they made deals with the waitstaff that if they played the jukebox, they could have their quarters back. The waitresses would paint the quarters so they could tell how much they got back. Also, its cool to find GOLD!!!

Damn, I need to start metal detecting. I always keep my eyes to the ground for neat looking rocks, and because of that, the best things I found were a 100$ bill and a 22k gold lizard pin. Imagine what's just under the surface.
There are 2 types of the 1903. One has no mint mark and only 227,024 were made and the S mint mark had 1,855,000 made. You made a great find and may you never lose the that kind of luck.

I have 2 1921 $20 dollars gold coins I found in a wall in a jar of coins while doing renovations for a friend. I asked him if he wanted the jar of coins and he told me I could have them. I discovered the coins while going through the jar and came up with a lot of silver from the late 1800's.
Oddly enough, both are hold the same value! 90% silver was minted until 1964 btw- At any rate that is a great find man!!! Love the excitement! Enjoyed it with you!

I really hope you kept that. You handled it well. If you kept it go to your most trusted local coin shop and send it in to NGC or PCGS to get graded. Today in mint state that's worth alot

The reverse of that coin is one of the most beautiful . The eagle is a nice design. Walking liberty half dollar is the #1 reverse in my opinion.

Beautiful find! A 1903 $5 Gold Piece. And while you were with your family! Ain't no better school than the great outdoors. Already the jealous player hater types are hollaring fake. When I was around six I was digging around a little creek-bed while on my way home from school. This was around 1965. So no metal detector, just a gut feeling. And I found an 1831 Large Cent. That excitement has kept me collecting ever since. Good work!! And more luck to you in the future!

I have been detecting for more than thirty years. Never found gold you find a gold coin not really knowing what you are doing. Then you rumb dirt all the way across it and passing it around adding more damage to it. Learn the hobby before you go out damaging beautiful coins like that. No I am not a hater just do not like seeing history damaged. Even if it would have been a nice old silver or any other material I would still have the same feeling.

Ok I looked it up a Five dollar US gold coin has 0.24187 ounces of gold in it. So multiple 0.24187 times the gold price $1885 = 789.24 dollars of gold. BUT I looked up prefect condition MS-64+ condition on the APMEX is selling for $3,067.71 Never rub a gold coin, scratches can drop back down to gold value. Plain lucky to live where you live. But Dedication of hobby pays off. Many places where there is not much to find. Great find.

That's a 1/4 oz Liberty Head gold coin.
It's 90% gold. Give or take, it's worth about $400.
They don't make these coins anymore, so you found yourself quite an awesome collector piece. Its great condition is part of the reason for gold's appeal; It lasts nearly forever. Apart from damage like scratching, the gold is still gold.
I'm really hoping that this is real. The fact that you found a coin that is not so easy to buy online gives me hope that this discovery is real. If that's the case, congrats, and I wish you luck in future finds.

i got a dfx whites with deep scan eclipse dd i could sift the ground clean with it in that area if you going to find nice stuff get one of them look in coin/jewerly mode if not programs specifically made for your own use. Or get a spectrum sure they are expensive but nothing can get pass them. If you learn how to use them i found some awesome stuff with my dfx. i got a mode set on mine goes 2 feet down everything maxed works great i could learn it to pick up that $5.00 gold coin you had if others were lost thats all it would pick up dont waste money on cheap detectors.
