- This video will talk about some things you should know if you want to reach a high Mythic Ranking on Magic Arena (MTGA) as quickly and reliably as possible. Ever wondered if it was better to play limited or constructed, Best of 1 or Best of 3, a faster deck or a better deck? This video will answer these questions and give you some extra tips for reaching the highest possible rank on Arena.

Whenever you arrive at platinum you are pretty much already playing with high level players …those in mythic are simply player with more time to spend on the game

If love to see a video about mental space and getting past bad losing streaks. I’ve made mythic no problem the last 3 seasons, and even made it to the top 1200 once, and this season I’ve had really bad luck and fell all the the way back to platinum 4 from platinum 1 :(.

The best way to get to mythic is to play busted cards. The one time I got to mythic I played a standard deck with uro, both teferis that were legal, growth spiral, hydroid krasis, and nissa who shakes the world. I had a 2/3 win rate
Yep this is true. Do feel though that there isn’t really a busted deck out there at the moment. Not when it’s compared to Oko, Uro or Omnath level busted.

I'd disagree on the constructed vs limited question. Of course constructed have less people playing, but that's because playing limited costs money. I know you can enter with gold, but let's get real, gold is scarce and will not last, so it's gems all the way, and unless you have a freaking amazing % victory, they won't last that long as well.
What I mean it's that even if reaching mythic in limited should be easier, it's also expensive, which might be a factor to aknowledge, also, if you're discarding your bad decks, it gets way more expensive.

Every time I'm one or two wins away from reaching mythic I face crazy decks or the game screws me with like 7 lands in a row or nothing but creatures early game when all I need is one more mana to get my deck going. Anyone having issues like this?
Make slight changes to your deck depending on the type of decks you keep seeing. And just grind it out, don’t get discouraged

Wow, this video is great. It's surprising that limited is easier to get to top 1200 mythic. Very enlightening. Especially knowing that you can drop drafts online. I only play paper but this is helpful if I decide to play mtg arena

So I have never made it higher in Constructed (my stronger format) than Platinum 1, and in the last 24 hours, I ran through all the way to Mythic in the last 24 hours, which is crazy... So, right when I got to Mythic, I was already at 96%. I'm currently at 99%, and against every ranked player I've seen so far, I've gotten a win. Is it possible if I keep grinding this month I could land in the top 1200? I can't believe I even made it this far. It's all thanks to being laid off work...

Does your initial mythic ranking get influenced by your win rate getting to mythic? For instance if I had a 51% winrate and got to mythic (it'd take forever) vs a 60% win rate, would I start in mythic at the same number, (for instance, Mythic #1000)?
Great tips, great content. Just a suggestion, you should work on your presentation now. Fix that white wall behind you, remove all the messy stuff on the background, turn the stuffed white...bear, I guess?...towards the camera. Little things that kind of get in the way of the otherwise great content.

Hi thank you for the great tips! I was wondering, if the final goal is staying in top1200, is there a difference in reaching mythic early or later in the season? For instance, I reached mythic mid month in limited and was placed #340 right away, but then is much more difficult to keep the good placement for 2 more weeks. What would happen if I waited longer to reach mythic? Would I be placed in a lower ranking?

Hey PVDDR, the last qualifier was sealed actually, not constructed:) But of course that is just the qualifier for reching top 1200 mythic, mythic championship would be constructed:)
I have found that the average best of 1 opponent is worse than the average best of 3 opponent. Just based on obvious mistakes being made.
I think this is almost certainly true in the lower ranks. I don't know if it's true in diamond or mythic as well because I never play Bo1 there, but I assume there's some equalizing at that point

Hey PVDDR, I really enjoy the educational aspects of your video, keep up the good work. Just one technical thing, the audio is a few miliseconds faster then the video. If you check the latency of your soundcard you can solve the problem. Upvote please so he can see my help.

I didn't know about losses being more punishing in Mythic. I reached Mythic during Zendikar Rising and started to drop fast, even though my win percentage stayed close to what it was before. This explains a lot!

Reaching Mythic for limited either requires alot of money or alot of skill, sometimes both. Reaching constructed Mythic requires alot of time or alot of skill. I'd rather reach Mythic limited myself though.
I love how you used Diablo 2 as a comparison.
I havent reach mithic, but i had been diamond in constructed just grinding. Play one deck, play best of one and track your win rate, if it is avobe 50% keep playing.
Also, i have spend 0 euros in my account. There is also deck choices that can help, deks with few lands are more consistent and do better mulligans, so also recomend those.

I'm not actually sure I agree with the "concede faster" advice generally. I'm making a ton of simplifying assumptions, but I think this is still a valid approach.
Say you have a 3% chance to win this game but it will take five minutes to complete. Let's also say your games are typically ten minutes (and indeed you've been playing the current game for five minutes).
If you play the game out, your expectation over that five minutes is 0.03 - 0.97 = minus 0.94 stars.
If you instead concede the game at this point, you immediately go down one star, and need to recover an expected 0.06 stars in five minutes to make up the difference. This is equal to 0.12 stars in ten minutes, which needs a 56% win rate (0.56 - 0.44 = 0.12).
If, instead, we're talking about best-of-three, things are more complicated.
Assuming the ten-minute games again, matches take 25-ish minutes (2.5-ish games on average). Let's look at game three with five minutes to go and 3% to win.
Play it out: Expectation of 0.06 - 1.94 = minus 1.88
Concede: Immediately -2, need to recover 0.12 stars in 5 minutes, or 0.6 stars in 25 minutes -- this needs a 65% match win rate (0.65 - 0.35 = 0.3, doubled for two-star gains/losses), which is about a 60.1% game winrate.
The math gets very gnarly very quickly for earlier games in the match, but there are multiple downward prssures on the required game winrate to make conceding the better play. Whether it comes down to a manageable number, I'm not entirely sure.
Getting to mythic isn’t too bad, just play any op deck. But once you get to mythic, it’s a whole new game

i always play Jund sac in historic to mythic but in mythic decks are much more prepared against that match up and i change to something more faster like gruul
If someone drops from a draft cause they are afraid to play, they should get an auto 3 losses.
Exactly. And lose MMR equal to having lost against three same MMR opponents (relevant for mythic ranks).
To be humble enough to concede is a merit of a reasonable person.

You can actually get to mythic with sub 50% win rate given enough games to experience variance to get through each tier on an above average streak, since you don't drop tiers when you experience a worse set of games in terms of win rate while sitting at bottom rank.

I reached 206 in constructed, then I "sleep for a couple of hours" (4 days without playing) and went to rank 1000 ish
I agree that resigning from Limited before playing 3 matches is bad sportsmanship. If I want to compete for the top spot, it's good to be aware that others might do that. Explains the higher-than-average quality of decks I run into on ladder.
This is sort of like buying 4 sealed pools then picking which one to play in the tournament. Wouldn't be kosher in paper.
Actually this used to happen all the time when ELO rating was a thing in paper
Higher rated players would drop out of tournaments immediately if they got a bad pool because they had to protect their byes for upcoming GPs etc (and of course much more shady stuff like asking for concessions etc happened, I even heard of one store which falsified results so their players got mega-high ELOs) or they would just sit on their ranking and not play in smaller events because the risk didn't outweigh the reward
Whatever system there is, MTG players will try to game it, whether you choose to or not is up to you but it's helpful either way to know it exists

I startet into mythic rank 140. Played further with my 60% winrate for a view days, but even with 60+ winrate i dropped to 1800 now. Should have just stopped playing, but there was no information how much decay there would be if you dont play. Dont get the ranking system exactly :/
Essa dica de pegar mítico com um deck rápido é muito valiosa, a primeira e única vez que consegui pegar mítico foi com um MonoRed splashado pro verde em BO3, eu jogava uma partida com um deck mais lento me frustrava muito mais caso eu perdesse e levava muito mais tempo pro game terminar.

I think that BO3 is actually always better, since a higher percentage of your losses don't decrease your rank. You don't lose rank for losing around 1/3rd of your matches in BO3, but only around 1/6th of your matches in BO1. The fact that some losses don't count is what makes it possible to climb with a 50% winrate, so this is a significant difference.

Could you explain this a little more to me?
I'm currently bouncing between Diamond 3 pip 2 and Diamond 4 pip 5 (mostly due to crushing Shuffler runs and not my playing), and I haven't done Bo3 because I've worried about the time involved (my wins are in the 3 to 9 minute range for Bo1).
I *really* want to get to Mythic as a pride point, nothing more =)
But, I can block off half an hour for a Bo3, I suppose, if that will increase my chances. It's devastating to go 6 in a row wins, then get Shuffler'd to death for 3 in a row, and so on...
@@gamemastery8858 Sure, I can elaborate on why I think BO3 is better for climbing.
For constructed, to move up a rank you need 6 pips. BO3 gives you 2 pips for a match win, BO1 gives you 1 pip for a game win. When you go up a rank tier (for example from Diamond 4 to Diamond 3), you can't drop down into the previous tier until you have won at least one game/match since reaching that tier. When playing BO1, in about 1/6th of your games you will find yourself in a new tier not having lost in that tier yet, and therefore aren't at risk of losing rank for that match. In BO3 however, this occurs in around 1/3rd of your matches, since you gain pips in increments of 2. For this reason, BO3 gives you around twice as many "free" games/matches, in which you can gain rank but not lose rank.

I already didn't want to play ranked limited because I much prefer traditional draft, but now that you've informed me that people "spike the punch" so to speak (i.e. discard bad decks and only play the good ones) I'll probably just never play another game of premier draft ever again.
Well to be honest I don't think a lot of people do that, it's not very common. I would not let this deter you from playing drafts at all
@@PVDDRMTG Oh I only play draft, I assure you. I just much prefer traditional draft because I think I can leverage my "skill advantage" (relatively speaking) because I consider myself a pretty good drafter. In BO1 you lose more games to luck. I only considered premier draft because it's ranked but rank means nothing to me and if what you mentioned is even a small factor it's just one more reason to not play it.
Just blanket dropping from every last draft of the night would definitely improve my win rate.
I think when you get to diamond you lose 2 in Bo1 and still only gain 1. I find to hit 1200, it's best to play Bo1 until platinum 2, then switch to Bo3. also this allows you to start caring about sideboarding. Since most magic is played after sideboarding.

I just keep jamming UW Control to mythic. Slowly but surely always get there.
I think applying pv’s logic if you have a version that can close games faster or provoke the concession from aggro more quickly you might climb quicker. That said I’ve seen people playing single wincon control in historic bo1 lately and it takes them forever to end games against midrange
If its better to play fast decks to get to mythic, is it not also better to play bo1 as fast/agro decks are favoured due to hand smoothing?

I just got to mythic this season. One thing ive noticed is the ladder is dominated by aggro. Mono red. Mono white. Cycling. Adventure.
At first I was wondering if this is "the meta" and how things go in the tcg and mtgo. But its not is it? Its only because your point of advice: faster decks for more matches.
Wow. But yeah. MTGA is so flooded with aggro i kept an opening hand with heartless act, flunk, double shadows verdict and 3 lands...and dominated with it.
PV, acredito que o magic arena rastreia o ELO (ou sistema equivalente) do jogador mesmo nos ranks mais baixos. Às vezes é possível chegar no mythic dentro do 1200 diretamente ao invés de dentro das %.
Sim, geralmente entro já nos 1200. Na última season fiquei jogando umas brews zuadas e quando entrei no mítico tava muuuito longe do 1200 😅😅
Entao, eh possivel, mas o Elo eh um sistema mto "o que vc fez por mim ultimamente", os ultimos jogos tem mto mais valor que os anteriores. Entao nao tem mto problema vc entrar no meio, vc soh precisa de uma sequencia de vitorias

You need to be on the top 1200 at the end of the month to play in the qualifier. The rank in the middle of the month doesn't count for anything besides bragging rights.
If you stay top 1200, yes. If you're top 300 in limited you're probably safe, but if you're top 300 in constructed you will probably need to win a few more games before 2/28 or you will fall out of the top 1200.
I see a lot of content creators that don't play their bad decks in limited. And I don't even think they're being precious about their rank. Most of the time they're just like: well 2-3ing this will be depressing, drafting a new deck on the other hand would be fun.
