- This is the story of how I got my face on Elite Spellbinder, a Magic: the Gathering card from Strixhaven. I'll talk about the process of collaborating with WotC to create this card and how much input I had on things like name, art and card text, and whether it matched my expectations or not.

The artist wanting to sell for 20k as a benefit to you so it does not have to go to auction but then it only sells for 7k is so crazy to me. Love this story overall super fun to hear.

What a legend you are Paulo. I love Elite Spellbinder. I regularly get to tax something good of my opponents, get to play around what's in their hand and usually get 6 damage in.
The artwork is amazing and I love the story behind it. I'm trying to lose weight and keep a picture of myself from when I was slim on the fridge. To be able to do that with my own MtG card would be amazing.

I involuntarily smiled at the mention of play testing: it made and impression of being really thorough. I think elks too were amazed with how things are nowadays.
I really wanted to say thank you for not designing another Fervent Champion. That card is a horrible overly pushed pile of misery and I'm am so happy it's banished out of standard. Your card is just the right level of playable, powerful and interactive. Thumbs up.
It's both proactive and reactive in a cool way that feels white. Awesome card.
Having "You may cast this card during an opponent's End Step" would have been really cool, but would have made it more wordy than it already ended up being. I would love to see White get a mechanic like this in the future, though.

Elite spellbinder is one of my most hated to play against cards. Its so good. You picked a great card and will see play for years. Congrats

I work mainly with content and music production, but as a composer I did some video game soundtracks and ventured in Game Design for a little. Sketching some MTG card designs was a cool exercise that I did for training and never thought about showing (not knowing whom or where). If I'd get to choose one for myself to be in I'll certainly choose one I did that would certainly not be Standard competitive but very relevant in cEDH and possibly Modern backwards, an anti-tutor :P

I thought WotC worked further ahead. Looks like they only try to finish a set ~350 days before a set's preview and when you had these conversations for Strixhaven, they were about 420 days away from that preview date. Maybe they start sketching out the set's basic mechanics some 730 days before release (to help design the new standard) but these are not some major master plans and are able to design based on how current standard is shaping new cards.
Which in a way is amazing. I wonder how many last minute changes WotC has pushed to help balance the set they are going to release in some 350 days.

Congrats on making a very playable card. Not everyone actually takes that into consideration. Unless shadowmage infiltrator has become a staple of some format I'm not aware of. lol

i would love flash, able to chump 1/1s or a more expensive tax cost but it's a great card as printed. exactly the kind of card i like. with Thalia being reprinted i'm going to brew some orzhov D&T for standard, and elite spellbinder is 100% a 4-of in that deck.
Love the card, has really great impact for 3 mana. Not only do you get to tax the opponent but also view their hand and all on a 3/1 flier! Oh and congratulations on Worlds and the great card!

Nice sharing! I always thought these cards were co-developed from scratch and the players are the ones who think of what the card does. Interesting to know that it's more of choosing from already developed cards and just making little tweaks if necessary.
yeah I thought so too because I knew the old Invitational cards were like that for sure (Paulo mentions that process in this video), was surprised to hear that changed with these new Worlds versions, but in retrospect kinda not as surprising given how mature the whole WotC set development process & gameplay landscape has become so they have such fine-grained parameters around the card slots they have for each set, leaving very little wiggle room for what card designs they make. Between having to collectively optimize for Limited, Standard, every other Constructed format, include key story character cards, etc, there's a lot going on that each set has to be balanced for.

This is definitely one of those cards where if i'm building white and need another card or 2, especially if I want a creature, if I don't need something at a specific spot on my card, I tend to just have it on my list of "spot fillers" (along with building decks where it's a specific part of my strategy). I like what it does, how it can slow people down, give me a body for relatively low mana cost, but doesn't feel broken. Flash probably would make it broken, though (but, also, even more of an auto-include in white).

Elite Spellbinder will probably be good in any tempo/aggro/flying builds which isnt bad. White has had this low to the ground feel so you dont need the power level of godspan or wrenn to be a playable white card. Hopefully this becomes a staple in other formats as well!

Fun story! When I finally get my card made its going to be named "Ol'Geezer in the Woods" which will be printed 40 yrs from now. The people at WOTC will only give me one choice and the card will rock. It will be a 0/1 human peasant for GB3 with the text "When Ol'Geezer in the Woods enters the battlefield, choose one: Breaks hip - Can't attack or block, and becomes the most annoying card ever. Has Heart Attack - Loses 1 toughness. Sharts his pants - Gives -5/-5 to all creatures on the battlefield.
They should have put the flash in the flavor text :D
It would be interesting to hear how pro players get their magic collections and get ready for a pro event both in paper and in arena..

Just out of curiosity, what part of Spellbinders power would you diminish to add flash to the card? Maybe lower the mana tax to 1? Make it a 2/1 or 1/1? Looking forward to new content on your channel!
flashing spellbinder is probably way too powerful. Maybe if you could have this effect in Eldraine, that would have been a different conversation.

I get wanting to be an op card but I will say I would have been tempted by Narfi so that I could make a Me commander deck XD
Does the card have to be human though? Couldn't it be an instant or saga for example?
If I could be a card I definitely would be a blue/izzet instant. I want to be played during my opponents end step and bounce everything they have for example.
Or deal 1 damage to all creatures. Draw a card. If one or more creatures died this way repeat this process.
I could also see myself as a saga with the last chapter being a conditional I win the game trigger.
I'm a total casual, but I think the card is great.
No disrespect intended but every time I see your face on elite spellbinder hit the table I want to smash my face on my keyboard and cry haha. But everytime I play it on my side I feel like the smartest person in the world, which I guess it what you were going for!

I can't believe the original offer price for the original art was $20,000. If anything, it should have been offered to you for less than the expected sale price at auction. Ryan Pancoast should feel ashamed for what he did.
Well I don't know what the expected sale price was, maybe they did try to sell it for less than they expected it'd go and were just wrong about how much people were willing to pay. Can't claim to know how that market works personally :P
@@PVDDRMTG A lot of art gets auctioned on the MTG Art Market Facebook group, so there's a reasonable expectation of how much original paintings sell for. It's been increasing over time. I think most of the paintings from Kaldheim and Strixhaven sold for around $3,000-$5,000.
A few pieces go for more, such as those with notable characters, like the Tiamat and Drizzt pieces from AFR. I don't think it would have been reasonable to expect this painting to command such a premium.
@@rowerewolf Yeah, that's fair. Mostly I try to avoid telling people how to price stuff they created, especially if I have no idea how much work/time/technique it took to make - people are free to charge however much they want for it and then I'm free to purchase it or not. I followed the auction for the painting and a number of people said "I don't feel right bidding on this because it should go to Paulo" so that might have played a role too (some people even bid and said they'd give it to me if they won, but ultimately they didn't win).

If you think all that reinassence art is an actual depiction of kings and queens, sorry to dissapoint you. Paintings are expensive! Everybody in teis right minds would like to look the best possible.
