PVDDR arguably is the best Magic player of all time.
[edit] For those interested: Tied for most PT top 8s of all time at 17 with Jon Finkle, 9th for GP top 8s at 24 with Reid Duke, and the #1 all time money-leader by over 300,000 USD. The last statistic is really interesting because it means PVDDR is by a wide margin the most consistent player.

Amazing. I have to post this here. Right after watching this. Right after. Went into ranked standard with sultai yorion. Had a good opening. T2 wolfwillow. T3 binding. Turn 4 I played another wolf. Was gonna drop a midnight clock with the last 3 but was scuffed on blue.
Remembered the video. Added Yorion to my hand with last 3 mana. He surrendered. To the yorion add. That was it. I didnt have anything! Binding was going away next turn and i only had to wolfwillows on board. The mind games. TBH its a better bluff then leaving mana up. Online stalls are too easy to read.
    Well done video.

I thought about things more. I didnt have anything in hand really. A couple kill spells. Certainly no ultimatum. But my progression. Turn 2 onward. It looked broken beyond belief. Plus Yorion carries a rep in Arena in general. I bluffed actually fantastic. He must have been absolutely sure that ultimatum was getting table slammed and i was handing him an auto loss.

    Here's the quick version:
Tip 1: Don't sacrifice Fabled Passage or similar land-fetching cards too early. Observe the board state and fetch the appropriate land according to your needs.
Tip 2: Pay attention to how many cards are in the graveyard (yours and your opponent). Also pay attention to which cards are in the graveyard. Be carefully aware of numerical thresholds so as to not help your opponent seeking the same thing.
Tip 3: Get companions (especially Lurrus and Yorion) to your hand earlier in the game. Try not to leave mana open as if you are trying to fool your opponent about bringing the companions online--it's a waste of resources to not use them when you have the chance.
Tip 4: Regarding Doom Foretold--If this is played against you, don't feed your permanents to it. That's what your opponent wants. Let it resolve quickly--in the long run, this will save you from losing resources you need later.
Tip 5: In Historic, if you are playing Rakdos Sacrifice--play Collected Company! It's instant speed, puts two creatures (each cmc 3 or less) on the battlefield, and only costs 4 ((3)(G)) to do.

Fist I want to thank you, and all content creators for your time and hard work.
Second I have suggestions for future videos, and all of them could have been address with a few little tweaks.
    1. The title implies that it is 5 general tips.
    2. Tip 1 I thought well I can see how that’s a good tip, but I play black/red with no landfall so most of this tip is useless.
    3. I literally did not even realize that these 5 tips were geared towards a specific deck, or type of deck till tip 5. I honestly felt kinda cheated.
    4. As a no landfall black/red deck the only tip I could have called helpful was about doom foretold.
5 I legitimately felt kinda cheated out of my time by tip 5. I know these are great tips, but they need to find their audience. I was not it.
    6. What format is this for I assumed it was standard since the video was posted a week ago. So why the info on mayhem devil that rolled out of standard a couple months ago?
With that maybe try a title that is a little less click bait, and open with “this is about (this deck)” the deck list is in the comments. Or these are for a general landfall deck. Lastly specify what format the tips are for.

Thanks for the video! I had one more comment on Doom Foretold: I've occasionally gotten opponents low when they have a Treacherous Blessing out, then they play a Doom Foretold. In that case especially, I do everything I can to make sure their Doom Foretold goes off. There's been multiple times when I've been playing an Adventures deck, I was obviously planning on playing a Brazen Borrower end step (I'd already bounced something, I had the mana open), opponent played Doom Foretold, and I just didn't play the Borrower, I let the Doom Foretold go. Sure, they draw a card and gain some life, but when they go up from 3 to 5 and still have to deal with their Treacherous Blessing... I feel pretty good about that situation.
And there have been times when I've seen opponents board wipe and then play Doom Foretold before I play anything else when they have a Treacherous Blessing out... and that I just don't understand (I mean, I could see it in some cases, like if I'm playing a control deck that just doesn't play to the battlefield then you play Doom Foretold on an empty board because that's all you're going to get, but when I'm playing a creature deck? Wait to get some value out of it). I've had opponents just give me free wins that way. So I guess what I'm saying is the converse of what PVDDR is saying: If you pick up Doom Foretold, play it the way PVDDR just explained to you is what your opponent should be trying to do with it, you (mostly) don't want Doom Foretold to go off, you want your opponent to keep losing resources to it.

So glad you finally took this step. I know you tried doing this before in the form of paid tutoring so I hope this doesn't mean your other ventures are less successful. With so much free content online, paid tutoring is asking a lot these days but you are the best so if anyone could do it it would be you. That said, I'm thrilled you've decided to make a youtube channel to share your insights and strategy. It's been a long time coming and I hope it's very successful.

In a similar spirit to PVDDR's tips: I have never once seen a Rogues player using Thieves Guild Enforcer triggers to disrupt scry effects. I get it, you want me to be somehow surprised you have yet another STT by saving it for my EOT, but you just let me topdeck an Extinction Event by not playing it right after I scry'd with Tome at your EOT.

    • @RV1AND
      @RV1AND 3 роки тому

Especially true if the rogues player is ahead, since their opponent is more likely to be looking for specific answers in that instance. Sometimes it can be helpful to discern whether the opponent is looking for a specific card or whether they're just looking for a land (in which case they have way more hits, and it matters a lot less). Disrupting scry effects is one of the secondary strengths rogues has, there's no reason to let it go to waste.

If you are 100% sure they are gonna mill you (say they have soaring thought thief and no reason to not attack you) then it might be valid. But if they have stuff like the crab and might miss their land drop, or an enforcer that might have no rogue friend this turn, just leave the good card on top and cross your fingers

Hi PVDDR, I am new to Magic (one year in). I craft my own decks and have a deck that is fairly competitive that I use in ranked but I find other decks I make in diff colours and types just don't work very well. So for example my competitive deck is black/white descard, exile with life gain deck. I would love to make a competitive red, black, white but they always fail. I think these complicated deck are just too slow to get going. Looking forward to your videos as I chose you to win last year and you did! Congrats on that and this, from Australia :)

Great and insightful video, PV! One thing that I'd like to respectfully point out, from my perspective as a viewer (and mind that it's only my personal opinion), the "flashing" or "side-scrolling" of the scene between individual segments is a bit distracting and annoying - I would try to look into other ways of separating the segments (more pleasan/less distracting scene cuts). As for the content side, I think this is a very strong start and something that a lot of viewers would both expect and appreciate from you. Also the advice given is quite specific and thus very realistically useful, which I personally like much more than just general tips. The point about Doom Foretold is something I've actually been instinctively doing myself. Thanks!

Awesome vid, PVDDR! It was amazing to watch you becoming the world champion, at the time I was playing an Azorious Control too, you're amazing! And thanks for this class in here, by now I'm only playing Historic because it's more stable and "cheaper" (I'm brazilian too, you know how expensive MTG is on R$), so I can't wait for more in-depth content like this on Historic and on Sultai Midrange. What do you think about Kaldheim? I just saw the spoiler for Glimpse the Cosmos and the synergy with Uro got my attention. Any thoughts?
