Seeing Ryan getting greyer really hits home. Thank you gentleman for pushing me into the Filmmaking Career. I would also like to thank you for my gear acquisition syndrome, fomo, anxiety, emotional stress and the valuable lesson that food and clothes are not that important when you own a RED camera. I wish you guys nothing but the best.
I've been watching Film Riot for over a decade now, thank you for everything guys! I still remember watching "Tell" way back when you first put it out.
Congrats on your success. I don't really do anything with films, but I enjoy watching your videos and appreciate you taking us along with the stuff you guys do.
Following Filmriot since about 2010 or so, hearing about them planning and working on potential features is so surreal. This is what years of hard work, trial and error, and pure devotion to your craft looks like. What a wonderful reason to have fewer episodes this year! Also the podcast may actually/hopefully scratch that itch that was left when you guys stopped doing FilmState hahaha, I could definitely do with more Ryan talking about movies!
Cool, I was just starting to wonder when this video came up. Rooting for you, I know the deeper we go into our careers, aiming for mainstream success the harder it gets to keep focused on smaller things. Happy pitching Ryan and looking forward to the podcast. It will be a day to celebrate when I walk into a theater to watch your film.
Congratulations sir! I learned about Most of the editing software that I am using today, and cinematography techniques from you Ryan, yes you, and the whole Film Riot team! You Ryan and the team have helped to upscale the skill level of many new film makers and cinematographers. Film Riot is a very necessary blessing in this time and age! Again, congratulations to you and the entire Film Riot team. We will continue to "Write, Shoot, Edit, Repeat"!
This is great Ryan!!! I love that this channel still is one of the Og channels that still respect what real films and film making is about. In the era of "everyone being a star" with just their phone. I really respect what you are doing. I'm a relic for films and FILM RIOT is 100!!!!!!
I honestly think that the predictability is what makes it less scary: think about it this way, we have the door which will obviously trigger something, we see something happening that is completely off, and then, suddenly, there's some movement around the door. The jump scare is the most standard thing that can follow that. I would just turn everything upside-down when we figure out that she's the one who died and she's trying to open the door every night only to come back, but she can't. And this is just the first thing that comes up when I start thinking about it. I love the cinematography and the direction; I just think that the script could be a bit less obvious and it would be scarier. Amazing job anyway, just some analysis from the top of my couch.
Excited about this channel update! Been watching for 11 years and have learned so much. I’ve grown up with Film Riot and watching you guys grow is one of my favorite things.
I love this breakdown and analysis. Your awareness of how the character should have been over your protagonist's other shoulder is so spot on. I felt the jump, but not as impactful as it could have been. Once you divulged why he should have been behind the other shoulder, it was totally clear because in hindsight, I remember my eye wandering to find the demon. Anyway, appreciate all the work you guys do, and much respect to anyone who comes clean about their "slip ups." We all learn from our mistakes.
It’s been years on years of watching you guys. I’ve only finally begun to start in on my own media dream and I’m 44 years old. It’s time to do what I love and drop the shit job that does nothing but pay the bills but drive me up the wall. Keep up the outstanding work. Follower for life!!!
You guys rock - been watching for years. Got into filmmaking as a teenager from your videos, now out in the world making projects regularly. I'll always tune in.
Great video! I really appreciated your insights on the emotional weight of endings. The way you broke down the importance of tying up loose ends and creating a satisfying conclusion was spot on. It resonated with my own experiences in storytelling, and your honesty about your film’s ending really struck a chord. Keep up the fantastic work!
Thanks for the update! I’ve been a fan of you guys since the very beginning and still have my Tell DVD and signed script!!! I’m glad y’all aren’t stopping
Iv'e been here since the starting of my journey from the age of 13. I have grown up watching tutorials films and much more of what this channel has offered. Good luck with whichever direction you take!
I've missed the film riot Podcast. It's my favorite podcast I listen to and always helps with learning new tricks with production and shift in mindset of the whole experience and expectations given from you and the guests. Fingers crossed you'll bring it back someday soon. Glad Film Riot isn't ending, my heart would absolutely plummet, ya'll have taught me more than film school ever has. Edit: I spoke too soon, I should've finished the video fist
Just wanted to say one thing: 'Thank You' you were one of the major people from where i started my vfx/filmmaking journey. And i wish you guys never stop and keep doing what you do. And i also wish someday i can work with you or at least act in some of your work ❤
You deserve the opportunity to make a feature film. It’s criminal that someone so passionate and talented at filmmaking like you guys are delayed for so long from having the budget, distribution, etc. to reach a wider audience.
Film Riot Rule's and it certainly would not be what it is without you Ryan and Josh all of the rest of you guys. With that said UA-cam certainly will not be the same without Film Riot that's for sure!! All you guys are awesome and you have no idea how much you've helped out amateur and experienced professional filmmakers and visual effects artist's atleast over the years with all kinds of cinematic projects behind the scenes! Please keep it going Ryan!
I've been watching you guys for over 10 years and am THRILLED that you're concentrating more on your film work! I'm biting at the bit for a Ryan Connolly feature length film! Good luck to all of you and will be watching for your new podcast. 🤜🏻🎬
LOVE that’s we’re gonna be following Ryan on the larger projects, it’s fulfilling the original goal of film Riot since the OG show Intro. Been watching for 15 years now, ONLY UP FROM HERE🔥
I've been watching you since you were still based in Florida. While I would like to play around with the things you've taught over the years, I've never had a camera and hate using phones. A decline in health has set me back but I still go back and watch old episodes as well as your new ones. While I'm not a fan of Horror films and don't watch, I hope you have success with whatever feature you're able to finally helm. You were right about where the creature was positioned, as I've seen the short a couple of times, and till this episode of Film Riot I'd never even noticed the creature.
This message was very much needed. I was also getting a little anxious with the cadence of videos. That said, I have been watching Film Riot since the Florida days (God Im old), and I cannot express how happy I am to see this channel grow and succeed. We love you guys! P.S. Every turbulent displacement cutaway still makes me laugh. That song lives rent free in my head 😂
Thank you for the update! Long time viewer (from ‘Tell’ days). You guys used to feel like such big parts of my life, so I’m very excited to hear you’ve got exciting things on the horizon.
Cant wait to see what you guys bring for us next year. Been following you guys for years and you fail to disappoint. I have had a big dream to film some short films since i was a kid, but sadly with lack of money and time it never happened. I have the ideas written down and a script for 1 of them, so its a dream i still wish to do at some point in my life. Good luck with your feature film and all the other projects cant wait to see them.
Thank you so much for posting this. I completely re-shot the ending to my short because I wasn't happy with it. It's reassuring when others share their stories like this.
Happy Halloween! Always excited when I see a Film Riot video drop, no matter if it's weekly or been awhile. You guys are incredibly inspirational on my filmmaking journey.
This video was great and I love the evolution. I've been watching since Indie Mogul announced they'd be doing less BFX but to check out, "This small channel called Film Riot." I love the introspection here in your own work and I can't wait to see what the future holds! Also, pumped that a form of the podcast is making a return! That was some of my favorite content from yall.
Film Riot has been so good since its beginning back in the OG UA-cam days. I will never understand why more people don’t watch it. It’s high quality content, better than most on YT.
I almost never comment on videos, but I just wanted to say how proud I am of Ryan and the FR crew for all they’ve done to support the indie filmmaking community. I still remember discovering the channel through Bloodtober when I was in middle school, and I felt so lucky to have a resource like this at such a young age. 15 years later, I can’t necessarily say I still dream of becoming a renowned filmmaker, but my appreciation for this channel is still just as deep! Can’t wait to see what’s next ❤
I agree and love that you are encouraging people to go back and critique older work, I know I've learned a lot from that. I love your work and this short was great. I do agree with your changes and you probably don't have the option but it would be cool at sometime to see a directors cut or alternate ending at some point.
When I was younger, I don't think I realized how well-polished your shorts have become. There Comes A Knocking looks and feels like a hollywood feature by James Wan or something. Also, the monster being on the wrong side of the frame is a pretty forgivable oversight that most people probably wouldn't notice. My most viewed horror short ends with me shooting a ghost with a revolver so it could always be worse
Film Riot has inspired me over the years. From editing own projects, now I already edit numerous TV projects & 6 feature films in Malaysia. I even do file conversion for Netflix. Thank you guys! hope we could collaborate one day!
Beautiful looking studio. I loved your short film I dont remember how I reacted at that time, but even now watching it again with your commentary, it was still a surprise ending for me, because here I'm looking at her human looking husband, slowly starting to know it's him, as she is talking to him and boom, we get whats behind her. I agree, if he were on the other side, it would be quicker but for camera angles from one side of the room, it looked technically right. Not talking about the people in it, but just the camera angle. It was like cameraman in the same spot, turning from the human figure to her. But as for the eye movement, I agree with you that first seeing the "demon" after the human version would connect right away, subconsciously. It's the magic you filmmakers do, where we feel it, but can't understand (yet). Would definitely follow you for your full length features and especially the feature version of this short. Loved the pace and the sound design and lighting.
Im glad to hear you are finally pitching some Feature films. Ive been watching you guys for 15 years and you've inspired me through my filmmaking journey. But its sad to see you never ventured out of doing just Shorts / UA-cam. We've gotten so many UA-camrs who shouldnt have made movies that arnt filmmakers. But now that you are its nice to see an actual filmmaker youtuber who knows what they are doing make a feature film. Also Note: On the short film There Comes a Knocking, I agree with you it should have been on the left side of the screen. But I think it should have come in from the left side as in moved close to her face quickly. That would have been creepier. Instead of just being randomly behind her.
Mannn.. film riot.. im 29 now, running my own VFX studio, been following Film riot, i think when i was like 15 ???? Damnnn...TAKE YOUR TIME ! WE ARE HERE ALWAYS !
I like the current ending, but I agree that the one you would have liked to do might have been more effective as a "jump scare." It's still deliciously creepy, though! Hat's off to all!
I'm currently a Graphic Designer. It pays the bills despite me never really studying for it. I would've never gotten into design if I had never gotten into Video Editing. And I would've never gotten into Video editing if I hadn't been obsessed with VFX back in the day. Film Riot and Corridor were what got me to realise I could do VFX by myself at home. In short, I have this channel to thank for the life I'm living right now. So thank you, Ryan.
Been watching you guys since I was in high school, there was an episode that you answered a of question of mine in and that was the coolest thing ever haha. Think it was the what to charge clients video, looking forward to whatever you guys got coming up!
4:55 Like that scene from Hereditary where the camera is locked down and you eventually see what's up on the ceiling that was there the whole shot. It felt like when you're in the dark alone and you can't tell what you're looking at until your eyes finally adjust to the darkness enough.
I always loved the concept of holding something in your hands that just keeps falling apart. Like a dream where your teeth keep falling out - like holding a gun where the slide falls off, springs detach, the magazine is empty, etc. - All that to say - when it’s applied to the environment the person is in, especially in horror, that sense of losing confidence… It’s where i thought Skinamarink did a good job. Doors and windows disappearing, walls shifting, etc.
Wish we could've gotten a bigger update on where you're at with getting a feature off the ground. UA-camr Chris Stuckmann crowdfunded his horror film for almost $2 million, and now NEON is distributing it. I actually already saw it in LA as part of the backer program, and it's pretty good for a first-time director!
Good luck! I've been watching you guys for years. I am not a film-maker myself, but I do creative projects from time to time and find great inspiration and some technical help from Film Riot!
Hey Ry Ry, super fly guy. Glad to see your face again. We get it, you're busy, and we're excited to see what the next opportunity you can share with us looks like. TBH, before I go on set I check out the BTS from Proximity, Ballistic, and TCAN to familiarize myself with that flow, it's just good brain juice. Any chance you'll have Lucas guest on your podcast? Looking forward to it - Lucas talking about cutting stock footage to poetry is something that I took and ran with as an assignment for my editing class I teach at a university. Would love to hear more from him and the rest of y'all.
Thank you guys! Also I may be one of those who prefer the creature positioned as is...idk why but the sting feels like when you hear a loud scary noise irl and you turn to see what made the noise behind you...
Just watched "There Comes a Knocking" for the first time tonight. I think the slow-burn jumpscare is nice (honestly refreshing way of handling tension imo). One ending idea though that would've given an extra subversion with only a couple more shots: - "Yes, I can stay". - Cut back to her, there's a ghostly hand on her right (screen left) shoulder. She turns in shock -- - No one there. She turns back around to her husband -- - right behind her, demon face/monster/whatever as shock value. - Cut to black.
I think you might be on to something. You should keep it on the "wrong" side. If it was on the "right" side for eyeline's sake, it would look more cliche'. The way the ending is, when you finally do see it, it's like finally seeing the copperhead in the grass you didn't even know was there. It makes it more frightening.
Love your videos. Can't wait for the podcast! I was also wondering if you can make a angel wings tutorial in the spirit of Christmas lol something like in the movie the night before with Seth Roger and JJL
Ryan while this is your baby and you are correct when you say if it works for you then it works for you. I feel like while your eyes had to do a little bit more work it feels smooth. Because he’s looking over his right shoulder and the monster is over her left shoulder to the right of the screen! His head is turned that way. For me when you see his head turned you’re naturally (at least for me) I was to naturally look to the right where he’s looking. Just my opinion, either way I loved Here Comes a Knocking!
Maybe the fact that there was nothing there when the camera cuts, and then there is something, where you don't expect it to come from, is what makes it work
Been watching since Ry-Guy super fly guy lmao and can't wait to see what you guys are up to next! I would not be doing what I do now if it wasn't for yall. Much love!
Ryan You dirty dog! 🤭 I feel like my last comment from a couple videos ago asking for this exact type of video was the tipping point for you to finally update us on future projects! So in other words I'm taking full credit! Your welcome film riot community. 😅 That being said thank you for doing this! Super excited for the podcast I definitely think it will help reconnect with a lot of us as I watch corridors podcast a lot so this will be my jam for next year for sure 👌 peace and BAMMY WHAM!
i think it works 100% if you remove the music cue. change the effect you were going for from shock to growing dread. have a cue that tracks along with audience's likely eye movement. have the eye glow FADE IN along with that musical cue (like discordant pizzicato violins getting louder), smash cut to black - and you're more than golden.
i clearly remember i watched "There Comes a Knocking" for the first time and I got the feeling it's real movie. No doubt it could be real movie. U did a real good work Mr Ryan:)
Watched film riot for as long as I can remember. I will watch their videos regardless if the subject is of interest or not to me. Film riot are like friends.
Really hope his pitches go well. Even if they don't get greenlight (which is more likely than not, just the nature of Hollywood) he needs to make a feature. I've been watching this channel since the early days and he's been talking about making a feature the entire time... At some point you just gotta go shoot it. He has the gear, a small group of people that have the skills, and he seemingly has the desire to do it. I don't see why it's not happening. You can't wait your whole life for Hollywood to give you permission.
I think that if the creature's on the left, it would reveal too much and could look cheesy. But I see what you mean, changing the ending all together to make it stronger and less predictable.
you put the dark creature over a bright background so contrast wise that worked better than having the dark creature on a dark background and it getting lost
Hell yeah, I remember having an old Tell Blu-ray back in the day, and a poster which my mom did not approve of 😂
Same!
Can't wait to see what's next for you guys. The Podcast, The Features, The Tutorials.
We're with you to the end of the line!
Congrats on your success. I don't really do anything with films, but I enjoy watching your videos and appreciate you taking us along with the stuff you guys do.
Miss you guys. Thanks for the update, and looking forward to the podcast!
Thanks man!
Happy Halloween, Ryan!
Happy Halloween!
Whew!!! Thank God!! Can’t wait to see the podcast and hear about future projects!!! God speed!!

Super stoked for the pod!!! Been watching you guys for about 12 years and glad you are all still making stuff! Keep killing it, love you all!
It’s a struggle for me to keep the story moving without giving away the ending. But when it comes together it is awesome.

Love these retrospectives! Your look back at Losses a few years ago is an all-time episode for me.

I started watching you at 40,000 subs. Look at you now, don't give up.
I loved the pod casts you use to do. It's something I listened to when I went running. 😎

The worst thing to happen to horror movies is the flat, murky look of digital photography

More coming.
Nothing but love for ya baby!
One ending idea though that would've given an extra subversion with only a couple more shots:
- "Yes, I can stay".
- Cut back to her, there's a ghostly hand on her right (screen left) shoulder. She turns in shock --
- No one there. She turns back around to her husband --
- right behind her, demon face/monster/whatever as shock value.
- Cut to black.
Glad you still here, missed josh and Emily binkeling
Congratulations on cool stuff happening!
Just learned something new from you 💪🏽
Love it still. A rule that unnerves me every time i see it adhered to is 'Never show their face or even eyes, except for Freddy Krueger' 😄
All I want is a Ryan Connolly directed feature film. You can do it bro!!! ❤❤❤
Happy Halloween, folks! What a nice Halloween treat
Much love!
YES! A Ryan Conolly feature would SLAP!!!
I miss you guys its been a long time getting episodes on mondays ah i miss that😁😭
i think it works 100% if you remove the music cue. change the effect you were going for from shock to growing dread. have a cue that tracks along with audience's likely eye movement. have the eye glow FADE IN along with that musical cue (like discordant pizzicato violins getting louder), smash cut to black - and you're more than golden.
I agree that this would have greatly improved this version.
i clearly remember i watched "There Comes a Knocking" for the first time and I got the feeling it's real movie. No doubt it could be real movie. U did a real good work Mr Ryan:)
Long time fan. I was look forward every black friday for your fantastic deals for fantastic assests. Have decided not to have wicked deals! Slainte!
Best filmmaking channel on the platform
So great to see Ryan back :)
Very strategically placed jumpscare.
Those small details do make a difference and the audience don’t understand it or even realize that’s why certain shot have the impact it does
I’m waiting for your feature film.
Watched film riot for as long as I can remember. I will watch their videos regardless if the subject is of interest or not to me. Film riot are like friends.
DONT SCARE US LIKE THAT😅
Keep it up, yall - making a difference in the world
Really hope his pitches go well.
You butts got me good lol Happy Halloween y'all!
So glad to hear film riot isn't ending. You guys are the fucking best 🔥
you put the dark creature over a bright background so contrast wise that worked better than having the dark creature on a dark background and it getting lost
