- In this video, I water and fertilize orchids growing in Better Gro bark mix and Orchiata bark. Camera credits go to my daughter and entertainment credits go to lil Buddy.
Hi Amy. First want to say I appreciate your videos from both you and your husband. You always provide plenty of specific information on various media with varying methodology. I saw from previous vid when you did repotting in moss, wanted to comment when you remove moss. I use a shallow square-ish (18”x12”) container covered with a tall kitchen garbage bag. When I’m finished removing the moss, simply remove the bag and invert the bag to contain the spent moss. Makes cleanup much easier and less messy. Love when we started to use ppm meters. Makes fertilizing more specific and no more burnt roots. Love seeing your collections and please if you can show closeups of roots and new leaf developments as well as buds to show vegetative growth in healthy specimens. Again terrific job from and terrific wife husband team.

That's a great idea, and I appreciate you sharing! :) I must say, my TDS meter has become my orchids' best friend. They are so convenient and as you say, no more burned roots! I wanted to thank you for your advice while I was away for 2 weeks (which as one week shorter) than I had planned. When I got home, I found a new leaf and new root had started on each my 3 phals in bark! They seemed to have decided to surprise me in a good way, while I was gone. I ordered the Orchiata bark and will repot them since they are still in original bark since last year.

I've adopted my wifes orchid, she has a brown thumb, my question is why don't you pour the water back through the bark instead of using new water? Can't you let it drain and then pour it back through a couple of times, why waist your fertilizer? I heard you say you put it on your garden but why not cycle it a couple of times?

I bought Schultz orchid fertilizer for my P. Orchid who my daughter rescued. They came to me totally dried out.
One of the leaf cracked in the middle, and the rest of the leaves are all drooped down . They were blooming but I think were ignored. So do you think the fertilizer will work?

First I have to say doggy son is too adorable. Second, I am new to growing orchids and have 3. One is in rest right now, one is in bloom and one I think I actually killed! The one I think died, got black at the base and roots were thin and mushy. Also, leaves all broke of in one piece from base which was black. It has one good stem with bloom on it. The other 2 stems I cut back as they were also getting black. I sprayed with hydrogen peroxide, put new bark watered and put back in window. I soaked bark in water but did not realize I should fertilize in both stages. Do you think it will survive? It was a gift bought from market and I don’t think it was taken care of. I now will start your routine with the other 2 and any future ones. Thank you 😊
Hi Ami. Thank you for the descriptive video. I use coconut water diluted as my fertilizer and the plant has been growing with new leaves sprouting up. Can I repot this now as the pots do not have holes in them. Also can I alternate watering with just plain water as the weather is warmer in Texas.

Merry Christmas i have been watching your channel for one year and i would like to ask you where do you get your orchid supplies from. I have ordered thr orchiada bark cant remember where I got it but it was just so expensive about 30.00 for medium bark i would appreciate this also the clear pots thanks and many blessings to you and your family

Hi. I'm really enjoying your videos and I'm learning a lot. I haven't attempted the water culture yet but hope to do so this weekend. Is the CaliMagic available at Lowes or some other store? Will I have to order it online? How many orchids do you have? And how do you remember the names of each of them and what each type needs as far as media and watering?

Hi Amy i hope you are doing fine. 2 things .... the first one i noticed that you don t pre soak in bark the rots so only do that in water culture wright ? And .. you add epsom salt at every feeding i used to give with the cal only but like you i started to give with better grow. At the point no active growth 1 feeding with cal mag and one with better grow mag is it ok (i used only to give cal mag but i think they need the other nutriments )because they need to eat ... Can you tell me if i am good lol..
Today i presoak my phal in WC but it seems i little burned the rots on the top may be i should let more the water soak very well.

Hi Sophie and thanks so much for your sweet comment! :) I don't presoak in any media now, including in water culture. I did for a while, and when I started using lower doses of fertilizer, I experimented with not presoaking, and it works fine for me. But, if you feel more comfortable presoaking your water culture orchids, I would continue to do that. Another thing to consider when you're fertilizing is dissolving the fertilizer completely in water before you use it. Undissolved salts can burn roots. And you're right....when there's no active growth, they do still need small amounts of nutrients. Have a great day and happy growing! :) Amy

Hi Gina! I back off from the fertilizer when my orchids are in full bloom. I will half my recipe or even just use 1/4 what I normally use until I see new growth. But I always give them CalMag and Seaweed extract. I'll be releasing new fertilizer videos soon. Thanks for watching! :) Amy
can the water collected in the white bucket be re-used on a different orchid?
I don't re-use water between orchids. If the orchid has a disease or bugs, it will spread when you share water.

I have a mini phal that Im trying to rescue. It had root rot , I-cleaned her up and started on full water culture, she had a few arial roots and one new root growth, I put two of the arial roots tips to soak , this for a couple of weeks, the roots are doing fine but the leaves turned yellow, so I put her back in bark again and she now has only 2 leaves left that have hydrated, but Im afraid she will loose those Any hope?

Do you think Buddy would get upset if you watered your orchids before feeding him? 😆 All of your orchids look so green and healthy...your fertilizing routine is definitely paying off! It makes it easier to have a large saucer or bowl underneath each plant for drainage, as you do. I have to wonder, though - do you have any dishes left for eating, LOL.
LOL!!! Buddy will not allow me to water orchids before he eats. He's part of the Orchid Whisperer team, and he gets preferential treatment! ;) (He's so cute he actually gets whatever he wants! lol) I've scavenged through all my "old" dishes to use with my orchids, and now I'm in need of going to WalMart to buy new salad plates! haha! Every time I see glass measuring cups in the store now, I stop and wonder if I have any to use to cook with....LOL!
Well, of course the 'star' of OW should definitely get preferential treatment! But, wait! Is that Buddy? Or the orchids, LOL! It doesn't seem to bother him at all when he's being filmed. It's like he was born to be on camera! :) So, how many more days until your poor family can eat on the dining room table once again? Or should I say months? ;-)
Buddy...aka "The Star of the Show" loves any and all attention, the more the better! lol! (I still can't figure out how he got to be so spoiled, actually I think he's done a great job training us! ;) We can fit 3 people at the table now, if we're careful when we eat. haha! I placed the folding tables around the kitchen tables and have orchids on them as well, so I can look at them all day. Yes, I'm the President and Instigator of OWA!!! lol!
Well, IMHO, there's no point in owning a dog if you're not going to spoil him (or her!). :) :) I would love to see a picture of your kitchen table with the folding tables around it! Yes, you've got to set an example as the President of OWA and you are doing a fine job, if I do say so myself, LOL! I am going to be purchasing some tables like you have for my grow room. They are the perfect height for my windows and will be easy to set up. :)

Hi Ruby! I buy the regular orchid pots from Amazon, and my minis are in Chinette brand drinking cups that I buy at my local grocery store. I drill holes in the bottom of them for drainage. Happy growing! :)

Hi Fathima! I have 2 beginner's videos from Oct 2017, and I explain why leaves turn yellow. They're recycling nutrients from the older leaves. Since I've started fertilizing my orchids with CalMag, Epsom salts and Seaweed Extract, I haven't had many leaves turn yellow at all. I have my fertilizer recipes on several of my videos from last month. Happy growing!
