First strategy game I ever saw, around age 8-9 back in 1997-ish. I had never seen a PC before except in movies, I had no idea you could even play games on them, so when I went to a friend's house he showed me his dad's PC and showed me this game. It blew my mind. This was the music track that played at the beginning of every new game so I saw a town centre (which was basically just some bones stuck in the ground because it's the stone age) and a couple of villagers, this track was playing... it perfectly brought the idea of the stone age alive in my mind. It also kickstarted an interest in history that never faded. Seeing all these weird words on the screen like "Babylonians" and "Assyrians" ... who are they? Why are they called those funny words? Where can I learn more about them? Beautiful. Sweet memories. Same thing happened a few years later with Age of Empires 2. "Byzantines? Who the hell are they? Wait, they're Rome? How can they be Rome? Rome is Rome!"
It was also my first PC game... i was only 11 back then... it was so realistic back then... the immersion was Real one of the main reasons why I'm a historian now
I remember as a kid playing this game, the soundtrack scared me... lol. Looking back on it though, I feel nostalgic listening to it. Thanks for uploading!
Ah, this track is perfect for something like the Stone Age, where humans start to form civilizations, societies and cultures. a primitive start but one that'll lead to where we are now.
+InquilineKea midi music is completely dependent on midi hardware synth/software synth that is present in your system. It sounds different depending on what you've got onboard, for comparison example search for doom/duke 3D "microsoft midi" and doom/duke 3d "roland sc-55", then do then same for soundblaster and adlib. ;)
+dark666king A good example I know of is "BattleScape" from XCOM back then. It becomes an almost different song depending on the library available. Not talking about the PSX version.
It's from the first game. Some tracks were only played if you were playing without the CD, this is one of them. Some of these tracks were later part of the rise of rome CD music
For me, Age of Empires 1 first music is way more superior than Rise of Rome's and CD's. Rise of Rome is just grim. CD music conveys the start of evolution or some stuff. Age of Empires 1 music hypes you up to keep you going! I disliked the Holy Man level in Rise of Rome because of the music in Rise of Rome! Ungh! Also I had a CD of the Gold Collection! But it didn't play any CD music!!! It was only required for playing Age of Empires 1 and 2!
Some of the tracks are missing parts on my vista 32. Like this track is missing the guitar sounding part. I tried it on my bros pc and they work fine. I tried downloading a midi soundplayer and it is still missing the instruments. Does anyone know a fix? I have sigma tel high def audio on my system if that means anything
*Chuckle MIDI is a music format. It stands for "Musical Instrument Digital Interface". It is a format for saving notes, pitch, and loudness of a musical track. Soundtracks can be written in MIDI. In the mid-90s, games would often have two soundtracks. One written in MIDI format for when the computer didn't have a CD drive at all, or one fast enough to play music off of the CD, and a separate soundtrack which featured proper mp3 formatted music that could be played off of a CD drive. The big difference is that MIDI format is much smaller in file size due to it only saving information on how to play a song, rather than being a proper audio recording. MIDI relied upon the sound-producing hardware inside of a computer to read the MIDI file and play it to produce sound through PC speakers.
There's no track that conveys the feel of the Stone Age as well as this one does :)
I'm happy i played this game without the CD. Because the MIDI music in my opinion is way way superior.
100% :)
Pure MIDI awesomeness
Absolutely

It was already stressful when enemies were attacking my villagers out of nowhere. But that sound practically induced panic attacks!

Didn't the music sound a lot different on old computers when the game was released?

this is the rome music and if it's not it's from the pre release :(
