    I played this way back in '97 and raved about it to my friends and family. I'd played many point and clicks of that time but none of them hit me in quite the same way as this did. "one, but one good one" is something I still say 'til this day. A truly unique videogame.

    Gaming has exploded and the majority of people have no idea this game exists. It's still largely unmatched in it's excellence. The fall of Westwood was a real blow to art. I know Annapurna is working on a NEW game and the teaser looks enticing. I just hope they can live up to Westwood's classic and not be overshadowed by it. Cause it could help bring some light back onto this classic. Great video.

      They technically didn’t.
      They were a propriety of Virgin interactive, a deal that allowed Westwood a much bigger reach for their games.
      Virgin interactive was a somewhat big publisher at the time, famous for platformers, graphic adventures and , thanks to Westwood, strategy games.
      Some of the Games published by them were: beneath a steel sky, 7th guest, early broken sword games, early shiny games, and of course Westwood’s graphic adventures (lands of lore series, kyrandia series and blade runner) and RTS(do I need to say the titles?)
      Unfortunately, due economic failings, Virgin interactive was bought by various other companies: the American side by EA, the European side by Titus and Interplay.
      So Westwood didn’t had much a day in the matter. Many of the developers under Virgin didn’t had much better future either; just think at Shiny.

    I recall launching Blade Runner for the first time and being absolutely floored by its presentation. The smooth transitions from FMV sequences right into gameplay were downright seamless, and when you combine the game's superb atmosphere with a solid plot, great detective-oriented mechanics/puzzles and multiple endings being a result of both your choices made along the way and certain segments of the game being randomized under the hood every time you launch it, you get something more than a fantastic point-and-click adventure - you get an experience that immerses you totally. Which is something I can say about very, very few games only.

    The technology wasn't really voxels. It was something in between. You had fix vertical slices, where you had "polygonal rings" that you could rotate for the horizontal view (so you could turn the characters around). The coordinates of those rings in a vertical slices were projected and rasterized with "nearest neighbour" fill from left to right, scanline by scanline just like polygons back then. If you want a look of it just google "blade runner model ycombinator" there is a comment showing a JavaScript-rendering . It's just a LOT of polygons for the horizontal view. The idea is that you could turn the models and show them from every horizontal angle without having to calculate full 3D rotation. Which would speed up things for pasts 90mhz calculator software rendering which were called "personal computers" back then. Which only makes the more impressive.

    • @masonstrother
      @masonstrother  Рік тому +25

      From game director Louis Castle:
      "Yeah, we stored our data as slices for space and restricted rotation to the Y axis. Both were optimization since each frame of an animation was a full model there was no need to rotate them. The renderer could render them from any angle though so I still consider them voxels. More like voxels lite then voxel plus. We also used a lot of sprite cards with zdepth and a quick normal hack for lighting. You had to cut corners where you could back then!!"
      I guess I should've done a bit more research LOL

      @deltapi8859 Рік тому +24

      @@masonstrother "I guess I should've done a bit more research LOL", you are doing a great job, don't worry. You are a reporter not a graphics specialist. They DID advertise the engine as "voxel" where it was neither true polygon nor true voxel, but what they did was impressive, it took the best of both worlds to work on low spec hardware of the time. His comment you picked out was AFTER people came back at him and asked questions about the "voxel engine" :D So yeah. However everything they did WAS super impressive. The deferred renderer as well. That was in a time where this was not the standard pipeline AT ALL. They came up with it by themselves. You can see the shading really well in the bradbury building. When McCoy walks through the lights and I think a spinning fan drops shadows on his model.

    I played this one via GoG last year and it just blew me away. Their unique approach doesn't just make the game look beautiful; it really immerses you in the world. You feel tension when the character would feel tension, as you're getting closer to solving the mystery. Your character can die at many points, and I had a great time replaying or reloading to find out how different situations could have turned out.
    What's interesting about the VK test is it can be wrong, either intentionally or unintentionally.

    One of the last game from the company that created the Command and Conquer series, this game has so much art they rendered for the game, Westwood admitted that they had close to PETABYTES of data almost 15 years ago! The interview was done in the old PC Gamer magazine... If you have that old magazine discussing Blade Runner, give it a whirl and understand that you are holding pc gaming history in your hands.

    • @phyrr2
      @phyrr2 Рік тому +8

      Westwood was an absolute gem, right alongside the likes of Looking Glass studios! As for the art and aesthetic, you can thank Westwood's Rick Parks for helping to bring it to life! Apparently he did the original pitch trailer for the game which got the project the greenlight.
      As a fan you may already know, but Rick Parks is also the artist behind the Lands of Lore series. Which, if you've ever played or seen any of it, has a most realistic yet ethereal quality to it. I specifically remember the Lands of Lore intro absolutely stunning my PC gamer friends when it came out in 1993. It went beyond to this beautiful dreamlike quality, while obviously being painted by a man who could translate the physical world into the pixelated. All without the help of 3d tools.
      The man literally saw light (prior profession was that of a painter). There are artists today who STILL try to recreate his aesthetic on things even as small as iconography for inventory items (i.e. the potions and such from Eye of the Beholder 2 and everything for Lands of Lore). As an avid fan, I will always bear a deep gratitude to Westwood for stirring my imagination and wonder in ways that no other developer or medium ever could. Also in no small part thanks to Frank Klepacki who started out with his Dune 2 soundtrack for Westwood.
      Unfortunately, we lost Rick Parks in 1997 and of course Westwood 6 years later in 2003. These original pioneers of the industry paved the way for everyone else to fall in. But as usual for pioneers, without much of the fanfare and recognition given to other developers who capitalized on their creation of the original path into this art space.

      Petabytes? There is a major issue with that claim. A single gigabyte of connected hard drive storage still cost $20 or more in 1997 when this game was released, vs. mere cents today. A petabyte = 1000 terabytes, or a million gb, so the only way Westwood could have possibly had a petabyte of data easily accessible to the original production, was to spend about $25 million on project data storage alone. Maybe possible if they stored a lot of it on CDs/DVDs, though, as that was a bit cheaper per gb at the time... you could archive 650mb onto a CD for around $5 or so per disc, so in theory that might have brought the cost per gigabyte down a bit under $8, which *might* have made a petabyte of data feasible to store then for just under $10 million. But I doubt they mostly did that - would not have been convenient. And even then, though the game is gorgeous, it's unlikely this gamedev project spent as much on storage media alone as its major adventure gaming contemporaries like 'Riven' spent on every aspect of the entire production. (Riven was completed for $10 million in all, including salaries for all staff involved, and that was considered a very big, cutting edge 3d art project in the game industry at the time) There's simply no reason why a single petabyte, of project data, much less several, would have made any sense for any game production at that point in the '90s.
      My guess? The actual word they meant to use in the publication was 'terabytes' - the project involved a bunch of terabytes of graphics work - and they just screwed up the term in the interview because even the idea of a terabyte was still unfamiliar jargon to most people in tech and gaming at that point in time. The bottom line though, was that it was a lot of graphics files.

      One other thing that gets overlooked: The soundscape (sounds) for the game are all from the ORIGINAL Blade Runner master effects reels. So for the effects, you're not hearing recreations of those sounds, you're hearing THE sound. These can be unpacked and converted to (.wav? IIRC) with tools online. I actually still own the game and its CDs after buying in shortly after release.

So, I say, just do what you find fascinating, or cool, or remarkable, or whatever, and I think people, myself included, will dig it because you're presenting it well and making it interesting. If you're on the fence, maybe do a little community poll and list your top four ideas right now and see what gets the most votes. Ultimately though, I think you'll do well no matter what.

    To those of us who recall those earlier days of the pc gaming industry with such developers as Westwood, Looking Glass and many other small entities it was a time shortly before the inevitable megapublishers gobbled up every IP with potential. At that time it was the norm for games to be released in a relatively playable completed state, and more importantly, one that represented some developer's vision of game play. Play testing is now more typically focused upon metrics like "how many seconds will a 12 year old consumer play this game without a shooting encounter before putting it down to play something else." I'm still able to enjoy playing Blade Runner recompiled from my original disks after years ago discovering David Millington's 2008 article "The Blade Runner Game on Vista".

    This game is revolutionary! I cant tell how many nights i've spend playing it and it was always something new. for those times the grafics were awe inspiring, it gave me a glimpse of what games could become in the future and it took a while for the game industry to achieve the same standard . I got 7 diferent endings and believe there are more to be discovered. I loved the pace and the storyline and to be a detective instead of just shooting everybody was and still is a unique and visionary take on a game till this very day. The enigmas were hard to crack but not to the point you're frustrated and thinking of giving up. The studio who created this game should be very proud of itself because that right there was the definition of greatness.

    I always wished they would make a game along these lines for Miyazaki's Spirited Away. It would be so cool to interact with that universe. And Bladerunner was groundbreaking game like Command and Conquer, changed everything. And it had the line, "if there's grass in the field, it's time to play ball!"

    For me this example showcases something we lost with 3d games: the atmosphere that fixed camera angles gives. It's important for story telling. I would implement fixed camera angles in many 3d games. Like for example having a wide angle to tell how small a character is in relation to the environment he's in is a powerful tool that we see rarely these days...

    Fun fact-Since they couldn't reuse assets from the film (there were no sets left nor was the kind of scanning tech we have no available to them back then) they were struggling to come up with a way to replicate its memorable noir/sci-fi scenery. That's when the game's art director came up with a brilliant idea. Since the film used a mix of old sets and cast-off junk to create its scenery he limited the game's artists to using whatever 3-D assets they had in their CD-Rom-based asset library. This meant the artists had to come up with novel ways to utilize 3-D 'junk'...which led to the game looking so much like the original film that inspired it that very few people noticed it was entirely different.

    Wow, first time I’ve seen gameplay from this in probably almost 25 years. I played this as a kid in the late nineties in my older sister’s room on her eMachines tower per her recommendation. It was one of the first real computer games I ever played at home. I hadn’t even seen the movie yet but I knew its caché, and the slow pace and dryly stylish gameplay made it seem so cool and adult. I’ve never really heard anyone talk about this game so I assumed it was a flop. I had never seen anything like it and now I see that wasn’t just because of my inexperience. The thing I remember most about it was the sound design-those footsteps and hums live deep in my mind now. I’m surprised seeing it all these years later how nicely designed the scenes are and how smooth some of the animations are, too.
    I’m glad this game is available now so others can try what I thought was a hidden gem. I might have to play it again. (And shoutout to my sister for recommending it, and Deus Ex, too, which I loved even more. These were the only games I ever remember her playing or recommending. Such taste!)

    It was so good. The most talked about innovation of the game was that characters were picked at random at the start of every new game to be repliants which made each play feel very unique and the game had eight different endings.
    The lesser talked about innovation was that the characters interacted with the map and scenes in real time. So you often bumped into characters seemingly randomly (they isn’t always appear when you were looking for them or when the lot demanded it). This was very innovative for its time and no click and point adventure had this mechanic before.
    I can remember the reviews talking about a countdown bomb. Saying if you were in the scene you could diffuse it. If you were in another part of the map, it would explode. It was really a new way if doing games.
