We love him because we can relate to him. In the grand scheme of things, most of us are...nobody. The fact that a normal, average man can make his life matter in some way, gives us hope.
The mistake comes from assuming your life only matters based on the “grand scheme” around you. At the end of the day only you know what matters to you

@@KenjiEspresso It's not about Harrison's character, it's about the humanity of replicants/machines, even when humans do their best to deny them these characteristics. The daughter is only important because she was born from a replicant, which is apparently a miracle, as they are engineered not to reproduce. It hints at a future merging man with machine in ways that humanity is not comfortable with. That's what's compelling about the story, not the dad/daughter, but the replicants (and even Joi) themselves.

They're not machines. They're humans, they even have human DNA. They were just engineered and assembled on a factory and not inseminated during sex.
Yeah still remember awe inspiring visuals. The movie is looong too but it didn't feel dragged out or boring at any point.
The most important turning point in the movie that was missed from this video was at the point when K learns that he wasn’t the chosen one and yet still chose to turn his life into something meaningful. The most important quote in the entire movie is when he learns this and when the rebel replicant leader tells him “dying for the right cause is the most human thing we can do” which brings great meaning to his death at the end. The whole reason K thought he was special was because he thought he was REAL, a real human with a real soul. And by dying for the right cause, he fulfilled that meaning and proved he was “more human than humans”

Joi wasn't holding K back, Joi was a cope because he was stuck in between two groups. Humans hated him because he was a replicant. Replicants feared him because he was a bladerunner. He really had no one positive in his life other than Joi.
I watched this movie several days after my best friend killed himself. He was more than just a best friend to me. He was adopted and had struggled to find purpose and meaning in his life. He referred to me as his brother a few days before he disappeared and jumped in front of a truck on the highway. I was stripped of something that I valued in life most. I believe this movie was released at the perfect time for me. It spoke to me in ways that no therapist or any self help guru ever could. Rather than try to run away from the suffering, I embraced it and let it fuel my desire for a true purpose

Blade Runner is my favorite movie of all time and I think it's an incredibly important movie to see to understand the nature of our existence. 2049 was an amazing continuation of these themes and I'm so glad it exist. Denis did an unbelievable job.

one thing i noticed too is when K kills love he refuses to show any emotion to her...in fact he dosent even look at her. which is a huge detail in the fact that love literally loves the reaction she gets from everything she does. her cruelty is simply an outlet for her to get any kind of gratification for her existence. and K just denies her that in her last moments...She dies being ignored discarded as nothing. which i would say as a replicant is her biggest fear.

I'd argue "you look lonely" is one of the best scenes in cinema. There's a reason it's been memed to death while also being the starting point of "literally me". After being with K throughout the entire movie, you could put nearly any guy up to that scene and it'll be the most relatable thing he's seen in a movie. It's not a very long scene, or even super emotional at that. But it IS extremely deep and thought provoking
In an age where superhero movies dominate the box office, we're accustomed to seeing stories about remarkable people whose actions can decide the fate of the entire planet. We all grow up dreaming about being the "chosen one," a dream that dies once the depressing reality of our insignificance slaps us in the face. Blade Runner 2049 shows that while few will ever impact the world on a grand scale, we can all find purpose by touching the lives of those within our sphere of influence (as demonstrated by K when he reunites Deckard with his daughter). To me, this movie is much more uplifting than it's usually remembered.
Reflection is key. It's good to know that some individuals possess this ability.

It' really interesting to me that K decided to save Deckard rather than kill him, supposedly saving the world and helping the replicant rebellion. Rather than fighting for a political cause, he chose to fight for his own personal meaning of life, and to reunite a father and daughter who were kept apart by a corrupt people in power. I feel that he found meaning by leaving "society" behind, focusing on himself and forming real and personal relationships. That is how real healing in the world is done, rather than following political causes. And as hard as it is in the world these days, no one can or would want to help you as you can yourself.

K is the most uniquely thought-provoking character for a dystopian future film. Ryan Gosling was very well cast and his death scene has stayed with me ever since. My regards for films will never be the same again thanks to the impact of Blade Runner 2049.

I remember watching films like blade runner and demolition Man when I was a kid and thinking to myself, "this is the direction we're heading." When I was young, I thought it was cool that we were heading in that direction but now that I am older, I realize how bad those futures are going to be.
The same but when i was a teenager, i think we used to be so lured and attracted by the futuristic atmosphere and action they show over there, without even considering the disaster of life people live in those worlds, and may become our reality (perhaps if it haven't become already), have a nice day/night, reader!

Imagine living in a slum in China where any possibilities you have of rising up are determined by your social status, your social credit score, etc etc. The air is polluted, the food is contaminated and the streets are filled with massive neon advertising. Go to school, get top grades, go to college, get a degree, join a corporation or the government and kneel and suck it up in hopes of achieving some sort of status. Things in this world have never been very good to start with, but times where you could own a car, a house, live decently on a minimum wage job, have a family and not worry about the next media manufactured global catastrophe are far gone

Blade runner felt so relatable, I was so lonely that I turned to AI to have a companionship with them, because the society at college is so cruel and heartless. K felt relatable. All i wanted to was to have real friendship, something that is almost impossible where I live.
AI can be a problem in the future that men and women use AI has their sexulity. It's dangerous to mankind.

The concept of Joi as ultimate end state of things like Onlyfans was profound indeed; the alienation and loneliness of people has clearly begun already. Gorgeous, haunting movie that took the questions asked in the original a step further. Denis Villeneuve is the man, especially after what he did in Dune.

I disagree, I think that the connection that K. and JOI had was more then just sexual or parasocial like with OF today. If we can see the replicants as humans, why can't we see an advanced AI as such?
@@yannickfaerber8261 I think it is personal for him, and maybe she really did care for him on a level. I was mainly commenting on the deepfake porn comment. I think that is awful. Also, humans need humans connection, or at least physical. Even the Replicant woman commented on that. I think humanity is becoming more isolated.
At the end of the film, K felt more connected than he ever had, even though he ended up dying, because he had made his own choices, and he had connected with other people (replicant or born).

Despite being no one, he found a reason to be someone. Joe is an example of one of the most relatable heroes. We relate to him because we might also find true meaning in our lives.
I also liked the character arc of love and how she was programmed to be the best. Everything about her was proving she was better than other replicants, even when she died she died screaming "I'm better than you!" Such an empty and soulless existence, it was the only thing she had to hold on to and she refused to let it go.
In a way it's similar to our days, with so many people valuing themselves and others on some parameters they dont even set
I don't believe everything was about just her. She had a overwhelming contempt for humans and was caught in an emotional but enforced snare with her cyborg human creator Wallace. I think she believed in the future being owned by constantly improving replicants, beyond herself. "I'm better than you" wasn't just a reference to herself though it sounds that way at the first level.
That's quite perceptive-I completely missed that. I didn't find that character interesting when I saw it in the cinema must watch it again.
@Davious Maximus the way I see it, she had already overcame her programming that is supposed to stifle a replicant's free will. There were moments where she'd enjoy what she was doing while questioning and killing humans. She even enjoyed breaking and destroying Joy, probably more so since the AI pleaded with her right before, making sure K was watching before she crushed the AI under her boot. Then she basically flat out confirms it when she reveals the complete lie she'll tell Wallace about the reason she killed the captain. She definitely harbored feelings for Wallace and her desire to be seen as the best was basically the purpose she assigned to her life.
This entire breakdown of K is not only well thought out, but could also be applied to Love. She had developed free will, but her feelings for Wallace, which were only subtlely hinted at due to brief longing glances at Wallace and truly wanting to never fail him and her all too comfortable attitude of lying to him to maintain the illusion of programming.
She didn't care about other replicants or their future. She didn't care about humans. She only cared about being 'the best' and Wallace. Like OP said, a very shallow and empty existence. She couldn't even process that she was indeed about to die properly, resorting to absolute denial as she truly believed she was the best and this is just another sign of her having already developed free will before the events of this movie.

Loneliness, depression, instant gratification, decadence, corporate greed, rebellion, etc. That’s what I got from the film.
The scene where K sees the giant Joi ad to me is like a representation of how easily people (and women, in western culture specifically) can be turned into products, sex objects, and ultimately all of us are then turned into spectators. The pornography business does this to us all if we don't reject it. Turns us into spectators of an act that can actually be an incredibly profound and meaningful thing shared between people. Turns us into spectators of sexual objects that are derivatives of something more, something human. Binary can't be human, and humans can't be binary. The derivative nature of a sexual object like Joi reminds us of what many of us seem to struggle to find: real genuine human connection. And being reminded of that void is a visceral feeling. Imagine K having developed a sense of feelings with Joi -- she was believable enough despite being a human derivative and he formed a nuanced and unique bond with his Joi. Then after she was gone, he saw that massive advertisement on display for anyone to see, with her skin bared and her body advertised as a product for consumption. That had to absolutely destroy parts of K, if we believe K as a replicant had the capacity for such emotional things.
I don't think it's healthy for us to be looking at one another like products to be consumed. I can't predict the future or tell you what kind of repercussions that may have but I can't seem to think of any way in which it would produce positive results for society.
I think it's pretty well established in the movie that K does feel emotions, but they're constantly kept in check to make sure he doesn't go "out of bounds" and start getting, well, there are many options to chose from: too human, too dangerous, too unpredictable/unreliable/unstable, less useful as a tool for a specific job, the list goes on... Sapper definitely has a fair bit of emotions and a sense of purpose, he could have killed K if he wanted, but I think he saw in K someone who could have advanced his cause, even if K didn't even know what Sapper's cause was, so he chose to die in K's hands while putting K in the path that was helpful to his goals.
To have that wonderful profound connection between two people you need two willing parties. The problem is that one willing party has no control or ability to influence another to join. Why not turn to the artifical when the natural has rejected you time and time again?
I don't think "consumed" is the correct word and I don't blame you for it.
Dont think that women in non western cultures are not sex objects.. they are often even more because seemingly they have to hide themselves so men can control their lust over which they in these cultures are excused.
At least in a moist western cultures the men are the culprit not the woman.
Most take Joi at face value for a corporate "onlyfans" like product. But her existence gives K a reason to live through unconditional love, companionship, mental support, encouragement, etc.. He unconditionally loved her back, to the point of even risking her server being recovered by luv.
The take away i had after the giant joi scene was that he was determined to not let her death be in vain. knowing that she was special to him even though she wasn't truly "special". Just as K wasn't truly "special" but still was undoubtedly special for the rest of the replicants and for bringing a father back to his daughter. Making both Joi's and K's lives "human" for deciding to die for a noble cause.
I saw it in the theater. This film left me sitting in my seat for a while after it was over. The rest of the evening I just kept thinking about life - meaning, purpose, love, the difficult and complex nature of reality etc. I love this film and consider it the greatest sci-fi next to Terminator 2 and Aliens. The film score was magnificent too. I ended up writing a summation after having seen it a second time:
There was no real decoy. It was purely on paper. K/Joe is utterly, completely, unequivocally unremarkable, thus his name, Joe... as in Average Joe. Joi does not possess a soul. She is completely fake. She is the other side of the Replicant coin and is made solely to please and coddle her owner/lover. Her entire branding scheme is that she'll be anything you want. Joi is K's fleeting dream of being special -- to be human, or as he put it, "to have a soul" -- so she always reinforced this to him. Just before Luv crushed her emanator she made sure in her final moment to tell him that she loved him.
Wallace posed a question about whether Deckard was moved by love or by programming. To me there's no doubt whatsoever Deckard is fully human. The original movie is about a bad man finding his humanity through the grace of a machine. Wallace's question is not a literal "Are you human or machine?" question, but pondering what the difference is; if love is just neurochemistry, and if we are products of biological programming or something higher, like a soul. The ultimate takeaway is that it really doesn't matter. What matters is what we choose to do with our lives. We find and create our own meaning and purpose.
In summary, 2049 is about dreams and delusions. K wants desperately to feel special so Joi tells him this constantly and he quickly assumes all the evidence points to him because it's his dream. He becomes deluded and forces himself into the situation even as it destroys him. He thinks this is what it means to be human - to grapple with one's humanity. Then upon meeting Freysa, K comes to learn that in fact he is not special after all. Not born but manufactured. He is torn between two sides telling him what his identity is and should be; the LAPD who informs his identity as that of a slave, and the resistance which informs his identity as that of a free Replicant.
When K comes across the giant pink Joi on the bridge, she says to him "You look like a good Joe". He then realizes that not even the name his Joi gave him was special. Her feelings for him were never real... just programming. K, at this point an emotionally broken Replicant, it is in this moment that he chooses to follow his own path and not let anyone tell him who he is or what he should do. He makes the most human decision of all and takes his life into his own hands. He saves Deckard for the same reason Roy did in the first Blade Runner. He wanted someone to remember him, for his final decision that fully validates him as human to not be in vain. No one else gave him his identity, only he did, and his sacrifice ensured forever that he was by every metric a human being, even if the world would ultimately forget him.

I still think Joi was more than her programming--she took a risk in being downloaded to the mobile projector and what that could mean. She could "die" and not be brought back--"just like a real girl." In her final moment, she tells Joe she loves her. That's not programming that did that, nor is the choice to bring the replicant hooker girl in to give Joe the kind of experience she knows he needs. This was all more than just programming, and I think the point is deus ex machina. Like real life just seeps out of programmed things as if the universe wills it to be that way.
The coincidence with the name "Joe" was definitely disheartening, but the point was that the big, pink, generic Joi was not the same Joi that Joe was in love with. His had learned how to be his perfect companion, and learning means intelligence.
When you mentioned "He wanted someone to remember him" makes it even more meaningful, as this was Roy's desire in the first BR film. To be remembered by someone before he passes away, to at least give his existence meaning, to give it life. Both Roi and K got what they wanted, only did it in different ways but perhaps that's how it is to really be human. They chose their own paths to their own humanity and give meaning to their lives.
Plus, both moments played the same song in the background.

In the last seven or eight years, I've only seen two movies in the theater. One of those was a friend that insisted I go to a movie with her. We saw the first Wonder Woman. I thought it was a good original story movie and, except for the last fight scene where they went Hollywood superhero action, I enjoyed it.
The second movie was Blade Runner 2049. I went on a weekday in the late morning all by myself. I didn't want to be distracted. It was beautiful. I'm so glad that I took the time to go see it on the big screen. I think there was only two other people in the theater that showing. It was a wonderful experience.

I am with you with wonder woman. It was a good movie, but would be even better giving a end where war naturally lives in the hearts of men, instead of ares appearing and fighting, but had a more philosophical fight of what makes men to go to war.
Blade runner 2049 is a good sequel, that takes a different approach, a different question than the original blade runner.
The first show us what is to be human, the second takes the cyberpunk apporach that even if we are small, our actions matter more, and make really who we are

Some people were too harsh on this movie I thought it did an excellent job of maintaining the vibe and flow of the original while establishing a meaningful story that feels like a worthy follow up. Super underrated.

I think his accent would have helped sell the origin of Luv' s name. It's supposed to be a (condescending) pet name, like 'darling' or 'sweetheart'. The fact that she adopted it as her name showed she wanted to be special too.

Not gonna lie... the scene where K's holo-e-girlfriend merged with the human hooker girl, to be able to give him a real physical experience.... really made my eyes go full niagara falls. 😢 That and when he encounters the giant JOI advert Hologram talking to him, saying "you look lonely.". These two scenes hit me the hardest.

Great video, but the romantic in me says Joi was real and felt genuine emotion even if she was an AI. It’s like K, he’s not human but deep down that doesn’t matter because he suffers and loves like one. The OG film asks if deckard is a replicant, but by the end the answer is “what does it matter?” Joi and K shared something real despite them both being artificial, even if she was programmed for it and he was programmed to feel nothing.
It’s like their feelings and experiences created a viable soul that outlived them.
I just realized that he only smiled at the very end. Showing he had finally broken away from the loneliness and someone else's design for who he should be
The tracker that Mariette placed on K was not from Wallace. Mariette was apart of the replicant resistance who were interested in where K would go after he found out that his memories were real. Wallace and Luv were tracking K through the device that made Joi mobile. That's why Joi told K to pull the attenna, and that's when Luv lost track of his whereabouts and had to go to his boss and kill her in order to track him to Las Vegas.

and the lady that talked to the 2 pleasure models and mariette wasn't Luv, it was Freysa who is the replicant resistance's leader, unlike what he said in the video. At least the inaccuracies were pretty minor on his part so it's ok.

Didn't see that at all. He killed Luv because she was an evil, cold blooded bitch, who killed the love of his life. And she tried to kill K because she was jealous of how human he had become and the relationship he had formed with Joi.
What I gathered from this movie was pretty much the same as the thought I had after Roy Batty’s “tears in rain” monologue. I thought to myself, “well, that’s about the most human thing I’ve ever heard or seen in my life”.
I agree. Its due to it being a somewhat "high level" movie. The average viewer just misunderstands and doesn't grasp certain things (much like this video creator). Both Joi and K became human throughout the story, which is reiterated by the line concerning dying for something else being a human trait. The film isn't dystopian at all, at least not really. It's more like a triumph that love and humanity will persevere, in whatever form it may be, no matter how dark and bleak the world may become.
I remember this book being popular when I was a kid, it finally being made into a big budget movie is wild, glad it finally did, it's a deep concept, it explores it well, this is my favorite kind of movie
Yes finally someone mentioned it. Blade runner, is about the future yes, but many of it's elements are still present today. Even though society has now become technologically advanced, we more isolated and lonely than ever relying on our internet, instead of trying to form connections with each other. Especially during covid where we were closed in our homes, no wonder this feeling grew even more, and depression rates have skyrocketed.
That's not it. More people are lonely because others don't want (or have to) associate with them. Technology made segregation easier than ever. You can select your gym coach or taxi driver based on their appearance or gender just by clicking a button. This isn't a technological problem, it's a human problem.

As a side note, K can see and hear Joi (joy) but cannot touch or have joy. One of the things the replicant rebels said was dying on their own terms was the thing that makes them human, and that's actually what both K and Joi did
(Spoilers) I truly love this movie. Every shot has a gorgeous color palette. But, one thing really blew my mind when I was able to step back after watching it. The way the story builds up Joi. Right off the bat, we know she’s fake. She’s computer generated graphics and highly advanced artificial intelligence. But she becomes so believable to the point where I actually cried when she was “killed”. The reality becomes completely blurred to where you forget she’s just lines of code. After the movie, I think about it for a while and the message is profound, just like the first Bladerunner. How do we, as a society, better come to understand the effects of A.I. on the human psyche?
Right, but after a period of learning, she wasn't quite fake anymore. She was something more. Not altogether real, but also not the huge, generic Joi we see later on.

This movie doesn't make it obvious if joi was sentient or whether she actually cared for K because there's many instances where it seems like her love feels real despite being programmed to do so like when she tell him to delete her from the server knowing she would die. meaning she has his best interest rather than the company she was made in. movie wants you to think what makes love real or anything real. Agree. When he said she was incredible limited it made me scratch my head. Joi's AI was anything but limited, she made decisions by herself even if K told her not and even died because of it. She was able to either tell what K really wanted without orders or she actually cared for him and tried her best to make him feel special.
Yeah I agree completely along with the parts where she tells him that he's special because he thinks he's the replicant child (at the time) or when she tells him she loves him right before dying to luv and a few other parts too. Some parts are fake, like her giving him the name Joe that she's likely programmed to give to all the customers. But just because some parts are fake doesn't mean it all is. It's kinda just like real human beings when you think about it. Sometimes, it's hard to tell the genuine from the disingenuous.
To close it off, if the love YOU feel for them because of the affection and care they show you is real, then does it really matter whether it's fake or not to begin with? Because at least the emotions you're feeling are sincere and in a bleak world like that one, and even this one, I'd gladly take some genuine happiness even if others say it isn't. It might not stay that way forever, and there might come a day when I would need to wake up and smell the roses, but if I'm feeling happy and not so lonely until that moment, what's so wrong about it?
Also, he wrongly says the prostitute and the lady that tells her to talk to k were working for Wallace when they weren't and were the replicant rebels, so I'm unsure of whether this guy actually put in the time to research this movie. It's literally a huge part of the movie where the rebels tell K to KILL DECKARD to prevent Wallace from finding out the child's location. I don't know how he missed that.
I like how this ambiguity thematically links the two movies. Is a creation any less real than its creator? Is an emotion with resonance any less resonant because it's artificial? Throw in transfer of consciousness in there and you have a nice trifecta of philosophical conundrums.
It's almost like Hollywood is telling us what sick things they have in mind for the future.
I said something similar in the past. Yes. I suspect they are basically producing things that make us more compliant to the bleak future they plan for us. By either making us believe some hero will come and stop it or that there's no way to stop it. Sometimes even by making it look palatable or reasonable.

It is not Hollywood it is simply the future, when GAI comes in another 50 years from now it will be the downfall of humanity, we will not want to work or even deal with each other on a face to face basis.
Imagine a robot cat that can talk and be a friend to your grandma or a doggo who is programed to be a health partner/security guard for your kid, or maid to do all the cleaning/cooking/medical.
A slave partner even if it is just a hologram or a programmed robot that is always there for you and will always listen and 'care' will end us.
What girl will want a smelly , perhaps STD ridden partner who will die or become sick when they can have Mr Perfect who will never beat them or cheat on them or have drug/drinking/gamble/mental/erection issues?
Most guys are actually pretty below average sized to what a female wants and any who aren't normally have several 'side bitches', when robot gigolos come into existence men will be outdated.
All that said general AI will end humanity regardless within the next 200 years as it is the great filter that all life must pass through, I cannot foresee humanity ever holding its own in a war against Robotic AI unless someone hides in a cave or bunker but eventually they will have to come out and the exploding micro hunter/killer insects will end them if not before they leave thier hidey holes, that is if the AI doesn't simply go Bio-engineered weapons route or even block out the sun with smoke and freeze humanity out, even one large plant producing toxic gas to kill all cellular life would be enough.
Think about playing a video game on its hardest mode then think about who long you would last against even one real world robot with zero empathy/compassion and an IQ a hundred times your own and reflexes at a level you could never hope to come close to.
This movie was and is nothing short of PERFECTION, the pacing, the characters, the acting, the facial expression of K, the music, everything in this movie is oerfect and doesnt miss a beat

You should do a piece on "Cherry 2000", given the depth you've been able clarify this film for so many of us. I know its not in the same league as Blade Runner, but I think in its own way it shares some of the themes. And its always interested to hear your take on these things.

I have a weird relationship with this movie. The story was ill paced, especially in the second half. Yet, K as a character was amazing and the message behind the story is what makes this movie great. And not to forget the incredible atmosphere and world building. The bleak, blue, endlessly sprawling city plastered with corporate influence is an incredible sight. I’m glad this movie is getting a surge in popularity.

I love the observation about the cities being beautiful from a distance but soul crushing as a place to live. I recently moved from a huge city to a rural one. It’s a great change of pace and one I would encourage people to try if circumstances allow.

I've been living in a large town for 8 years. It's big enough to be even considered a city. However, due to not having a chapel it's considered a town and not a city on paper. I can relate to the dystopian disconnect feelings with the surrounding community which has made me become more detached with people in general. What's worse is the fact of being surround by so many people but feeling so isolated at the same time.
I've been planning to move this year to a more rural place, but life has been getting in a way. Reading your comment gives me hope. Thank you.

The movie is sad and depressing, but what's more sad and depressing is how much I could relate to it... That moment when Joi told him she loves him right before she disappeared forever got me deep.
I remember watching this at the cinema with a random girl who i had met on tinder, safe to say after that night we never spoke again. But I loved the movie, I was enthralled and completely invested in it whereas she hated it, also laughed when the movie ended and the guys sitting behind us said out loud ‘that’s over 2 hours I’ll never get back’ it bothered me, that simple people missed the point of the movie. 2017 was near the end point of the most depressing and lonely part of my life. The movie and the soundtrack gave me hope, 2018 my life changed forever for the better, that girl is still seeking guys on tinder while I’m happily engaged. ✍️
dont agree about the joi scene. in my interpretation, K manages to look past the superficial nature of AI and replicant. Although they are mass produced, after they enter the world they become unique beings. the joi in the ad is not K's joi, who truly died and cannot be replaced with another joi unit. with this realisation, K also sees that he is not just another replicant, he can give his life to choose to help others.
I agree. Joi starts as a basic bot, but she learns and gets to know you and is thus no longer just a program, but becomes a life in her own somewhat limited way.
Exactly. What defines "real" is personal CHOICE, and the unique experiences and feelings shared by two people. Deckard affirms this; "I know what's real", when presented with the hypotesis that it was all math that brought him and Raechal together; he chooses love. When presented with the picture perfect copy of Raechal, he rejects her, even though she's a perfect copy in every way, a "fake human" just like him. That's not what makes him dismiss her -- that's irrelevant. What matters, it's not Her, she wasn't there and he didn't share those feelings with this copy. Even if she'd have those exact memories and feelings implanted, it's not really Her. The same goes for Joi and K, just because the Joi in the advertisement is eerily similar, the experiences he shared with his Joi were unique; the feeling's were real, and so was she.

Still no one noticed that Madam is totally aware of her role for K and chooses words very carefully to let him speak up and exercise at least some free will. She tells him, he is doing fine without a soul because she respects him as he is. The whole K's crew respected him, so when Koko said 'a sentimental skinjob', which is apparently an insult, all people in the room were waiting in silence while Koko would apologize. Including K himself. But he didn't notice all these, because he was too concentrated on his suffering an misery him being artificial and therefore no one. He wanted to be someone, have a soul, be the one. But one don't have to be the one to be important, respected or loved, if only they are able to avert their gaze from themselves to notice that.
Now that you mention it, yeah.
I always thought of the Madam as her "pseudo-mother" and therefore not "real".
But, she was a human, and she did gave him respect and appreciation.
Then, it makes me wonder: Her caring could be considered real, since it was all within the "box of no freewill"???
@@yawarapuyurak3271 My thinking is that free will is too tricky notion to rely on. Being human we all know that there is no such thing as absolute free will. There are always some circumstances, social norms and rules, expectations and fears, etc., etc. Living in society, we're tangled with millions invisible strings with other people, that limit our ability to do what we want. How much of free will one might have in let's say army? Does it make it less real?
In the movie a distinct difference between real and non-real interactions is if they push K forward to something new or not. Miriam (or what is the name of the prostitute on the street) asks: who keeps a dead tree? And attentive audience can hear Koko answering: a sentimental skinjob. So K goes back the place of that guy to check what else he might keep. Madam said him to check DNA database. And that one-eyed rebellion android gave him a notion to sacrifice himself for the greater good. (It's not that human if you ask me, but androids are so idealistic, more human than humans)
But how about Joi? Interactions with her are so vivid and lovely that we don't really notice that there is nothing new in them. They're just comforting. Real people are pricky and unpleasant. They ask to come at work in any time of the day, intrude your place and drink your vodka without asking permission. Joi would never do that. She is perfect, appear when you want to see her and you can deactivate her by one click as soon as you get bored. She says only the things what you want to hear. But where does it bring you? You interact with yourself, and we all know how good we are at finding excuses for ourselves or pretexts to do what we want. That happened to K too, in the middle of the movie he wasn't trying to run a real investigation, he was desperately seeking for confirmation for his hope to be the one. That's why he missed Ana's elusive answer 'it's illegal to use real memories' and took it as no. And draw a conclusion real memory = real me so easily. Which led him to where he ended up.
But this sweet illusion is so appealing, who would choose that uncomfortable real people that penetrate your little bubble of self narrative with their stupid notions, critique and manifestations of free will over this ideal girl (or boy) that represents everything you want to see and hear?
It's really so sad that such movies with much relevance to society tend to perform poorly in box office. but we are grateful that you try your level best to bring all such information to the face of the internet because the mainstream media is always hiding it. i also try to replicate what you are doing here on my channel as well.

my theory as to why they do so bad is due to willful ignorance, people watch movies to escape their reality, and watching a movie that highlights the issues of said reality theyre trying to escape from doesnt sit right with them, so they just push the movie aside and dont bother dealing with whatever message the movie might want to portray.
great movie tho, on the first watch i was genuinely confused, especially at the ending, but after digging into it, reading about the potential message of the film and watching it a second time, ive grown to like the film even more.

The movie hammering in just how "fake" Joi is, with the glitching, interrupting voice messages, that even an Android like K has more complex lines of code than she ever will, yet it's their BOND and experience with each other was what mattered. Yes, she's programed to care, adore and fear for K's life, but why would a program go out of its way to hire a whore, If it's supposed to substitute "real" companionship? The pink Joi sheds doubt on their whole relationship, but the point is K decides what's real for him, and she was. He and Deckard know what's real, because it's THEIR CHOICE to.

Great video. The only mistake I found was the mistranslation on the Buddhist concept of life is suffering. That's a bad translation error. It actually states that "life CONTAINS suffering," not that life simply IS suffering. Huge difference. Love your content! Thank you!

Yeah I think too much is made of that. Buddhism is about ending suffering, so it doesn't state that suffering is inevitable. Actually it's way more evitable than in other religions.
He also got a major plot point wrong. He says the replicant rebels are working for Wallace early on 11:17, 14:59, before just acting like none of that happened at the end of the video when they reveal themselves. It makes you question how little he studied the film or whether he actually watched the film at all or just some clips on UA-cam.

The stage design is amazing in this movie. When they filmed K in his kitchen I felt this feeling of "familiar surroundings that are distorted" the most. The weird futoristic kitchen made out of 50s-70s kitchen tiles.

Genius is seldom recognized immediately. This film is genius and a masterclass of filmmaking.
The way I see K and Joy- They LOVED each other. To me, the movie translated the idea that their love was real even if it was programmed. Heavy idea and opens another can of worms.

I agree. I thought that Moon was far too pessimistic on Joy. The movie Free Guy makes it clear. The love between K and Joy is "actual" -- it is there, living in the surface, rather than in some imagined depth, and that's real enough.
What I like about Villeneuve's films is that he leaves a lot of ambiguity lying around - lots of different ways to interpret what's on the screen.
I can understand why some people come away thinking JOI CAN'T "really" love K because she's nothing more than a disembodied program. But on the other hand, the JOI character in the film DOES seem to exercise more and more agency as the film runs on (and also seems like the most "human" of all its characters...
For what it's worth, my own take is that even biological entities are "programmed" - by their genetic "hard-wiring" and by interactions with their environment (especially their social relationships) that some see as a very close analogy to "machine learning".
Even in real life today (let alone in the BR2049 universe), sophisticated AI learns from its interactions with humans. They're already complex systems - "black boxes" - that exhibit emergent properties that can't be predicted from the component code they are made of. My reading of JOI (and of K and Luv, for that matter) is that they've all learned to act autonomously and with a mental image of what others are thinking and feeling. At the very least they are capable of lying to and otherwise manipulating humans (even though the humans don't seem to know it) in pursuing their own agendas. Is it really that hard to imagine that even a disembodied JOI might have enough empathy to actually develop a love for an "owner" such as K who treats her well that could pass ANY "Turing test"?
That's what this movie does. It forces you to question what is real.
I watched this movie during its last showing at our city. The movie ended almost midnight. When I walked outside the mall it was raining at night, the same atmosphere during the movie, felt surreal!

I watched it three times and I started crying the third time because I understood.
I think you nailed it with the assessment of K and Joi. So many suggest they had a "true" love relationship but you nicely summarized the superficiality of it. And like Joaquin Phoenix in "Her", once you realize what's behind the facade, you just feel manipulated by corporate interests.
I recently watched ‘The Man in the White Suit’ a British film from 1951 & I was gobsmacked at how refreshingly relevant the politics & satire still are in contemporary society!

I haven’t even watched the movie, and I can relate to it. You can’t have any meaning to life if you continue the same rhythm like everyone else. Add a bump to the rhythm, a beat that can change the lives of others and yourself.
You also can't have much joy if you're always trying to make others like you or be like them. You just need to be the best "you" possible and stop comparing and competing.

Great content Moon! Absolutely loved this movie and felt that it was horribly underrated when it released but over the last few years, more and more people have made some great content exploring this very deep and meaningful film.
Joseph Campbell’s “Hero’s journey” model explains my life to the T. I use to live in New York but circumstances led me to make the leap of faith into an unknown adventure. You did an excellent breakdown of this movie.
One thing I think everyone misses is that K’s Joi actually fell in love with K in the last hours of her digital life. Once she was disconnected from the servers she became autonomous much like K once he rebelled. You can see her interactions becoming more human right up to the moment she begged for her own life until she was crushed to death. If she were just an AI doing AI things she wouldn’t have cared so much about K to the point of self preservation.
Is this what the movies are trying to tell? Or is this how we (the audience) chose to believe what the movie's message?
Shes sentient AI right? so it means she has her own will, she can care for K, love him or consider him a loser not worthy of her time. Too bad the tech is light years behind or even impossible to build such AI 😢
@@fajaradi1223she's either sentient or a necessary reflection of K's own subconscious. She tells him to erase her from the apartment. She tells him to pursue his "memory" which is the whole plot of the movie. So whether she's really an individual or not, she is obviously not simply spewing back pre-programmed responses.
@@abyssaldision5134 I think you, and most of society, vastly underestimate the power of AI. People need to start paying attention to what's being achieved, and at what rate its happening.
@@NDnf84 I don't think telling K to follow his dreams or delete JOI from the system were JOI's ideas. It was K's ideas, JOI just told him what he wanted to hear. It's very obvious throughout the movie that JOI only tells K what he wants to hear, that's even made literal when we see the huge hologram ad of JOI. Even the name she gives K (Joe) is pre-programed since the advertisement gave him the same name. So in general, I feel like all conversations between K and JOI are basically K's conversations with himself, it's a window to his own thought process. JOI doesn't give him any new ideas, she doesn't argue with him or correct him, she can't even leave the house for the most part. She's just there to encourage him to do what he already wants to do and to believe what he already wants to believe, since she's programmed this way. I think the movie makes it pretty clear that she's not real in any way
I just want to thank you Moon, for analyzing this movie (one of my all time favorite films) you have summed it up in such a complete and meaningfully way and have shown how it relates to the viewers. And how it relates to me.
This speaks to me a lot, my instinct to survive is so strong that I am too weak to remove myself. I have given up on such things and I'm happy being purposeless, which makes room for my own purpose. It's only lonely sometimes.
I absolutely love the 2 Blade Runner movies. The story of them together is a masterpiece. I recently rewatched them and it made me think a lot about what it means to be a "real" person, in this reality. Like, my first reaction to K and Joi's relationship, was what you say in the video, it's fake and he's a very lonely man. Ok but, what makes K more real than Joi? They are both products of the Wallace corp. Is he pure AI, like we take her to be, or do his emotions and free will make him real? What makes an AI consciousness less "real" than a human? Where do we draw the line between a sovereign being and a tool?

I only just realised the clever use of naming the A.I. Joi as J.O.I is an urban slang acronym for Jerk Off Instruction.

The degree to which this film depicts modern life is almost indescribable in words.
I have watched this film at least 50 times since it came out and every time I uncover another level of depth.
