MX6 ELITE (MX8 ELITE) Installation at a Pool with a Variable Speed Pump (VS Pump)

- This is the Installation Process of the Zodiac MX6 Elite and it is also the same for the MX8 Elite. It also works for the MX8 and MX6 cleaners. The installation process is pretty easy and I go over my preferred method of installing the MX6 Elite on a pool with a Variable Speed Pump (VS Pump).
All the parts for a skimmer installation are in the box. However, if you are using the side port/ vacuum port there are two additional parts you will need.
One is a vac lock for the threaded port. This is a safety device to prevent entrapment if the cleaner hose comes loose and the pool is in use. I highly suggest installing it with one.

I wish manufacturers would include this with the cleaner as many consumers use a side port when installing.
I also do not like the adapter that Zodiac includes for the side port installation. It tends to pop out when the pool is in use or can easily be pulled out. I like this adapter better - Baracuda MX8 Cleaner Leaf Catcher Hose Adaptor X77094

This fits in the vac lock much better and the vac lock actually will latch onto it and hold it in place. Zodiac should consider including this adapter in every box.
If you are installing the cleaner at the skimmer, the Hole in One Basket is a great aftermarket product that will allow you to connect the cleaner in the skimmer and keep the skimmer basket in the skimmer. In other words, you can install the cleaner at the skimmer and keep the basket in.

I try to cover everything you will run into in the video but for the sake of time I left out what to do if the cleaner has too much suction. Not a common problem but it can happen. You can adjust the skimmer Flow Keeper Valve (Included in the box) to a lower setting but in my experience, it doesn't do a whole lot. If I run into this problem when I am installing the cleaner I simply put in a different skimmer regulator valve. The Zodiac Flow Keeper valve is self-adjusting so you can't really reduce the suction - the speed of the cleaner. There is also a secondary suction regulator on the cleaner head itself which also helps if there is too much suction.

If you have too little suction make sure the filter is clean and that all of the flow is going to the skimmer. You can also again replace the Flow Keeper Valve with a more adjustable one and close it off to increase suction.
From a side port, it is very easy to set the suction. Simply turn the handle until you achieve the correct wheel RPM of the cleaner.
The RPM - Wheel revolutions per minute is the most critical part of the installation. The MX6 Elite needs just the right flow to work correctly. It is a pretty sensitive cleaner so too much or too little suction will affect the cleaner’s overall performance.
I also highly suggest a leaf canister so that the pump basket does not get clogged up with debris. Zodiac makes a specific canister for the MX8 cleaners - Zodiac Cyclonic Automatic Pool Cleaner Leaf Catcher Canister.

Great job explaining the side suction vs. using the skimmer, I’m a first timer and was able to follow everything :-)
What I found out about the vac lock is I had to use enough thread tape so when it's tight the top lines up. I then had to secure the lock-nut on the side.
Mine keeps popping up, like it’s doing a wheelie. Any advice on what it can be?
Do both treads on the MX 6 Elite have the capability to go in reverse? I recently bought an MX 6 Elite and the left tread NEVER goes backward. I also don’t see a side B directional control replacement for the MX 6, only the MX 8.
Hello and thak you for your dedication to the industry. I bought the Zodiac MX8 per your reviews and the only issue I have is that when the variable speed pump kicks to low (1750 RPM) the unit stops moving?
That is not a major issue - it won't run on such a low speed. So if you need it to run longer just keep it at the higher speed a bit longer.

I have a new mx6 elite and it wont climb my beadcrete walls unless I exceed the recommend sweet spot for revolutions per 10 secondds
May clean the filter and see if that helps. It's okay if it is a little faster.
Get a 280 Polaris instead they work off pressure instead of suction. Much more reliable and easier to empty the debris from the bag.
I’m using my side port, pump is priming properly, using skimmer and side port simultaneously. Vac line looks like it’s trying to get the zodiac to move but it will not, all connections are secured. Any advice? Brand new
Give the side port a lot more suction.

For my 16x32’ in ground I have two skimmers. Have you seen it work ok where the one skimmer is dedicated to the cleaner and one does the surface skimming?

You could use it in an above ground pool. There are less expensive units available like the Pentair Lil' Rebel and the Zodiac Ranger.
Wasn’t the pool cleaner 2 wheel model in that pool.
I am having a hard time finding the MX6 Elite as packaged in your video. Is that kit still available? If so, where can I get it?

so I'm using an intelliflow vsf pump and the mx6... the mx6 works for about 10 minutes will work around the pool but will stop and do circles and then continue to cruise around the pool but about after an hour it will stop working.... what settings would you recommend or should I use as far as rpm and gpm with a 20k pool sand filter I've also reset the flow setter I thought it was supposed to open and close when the pump was on?
Shouldn't stop like that. I would check to cleaner to make sure all the parts are working.
@@SPL well it's brand new out of the box removed all pool toys and sticks and leaves from the bottom it runs just fine for a little while but will stop and spin a few times change direction eventually it just slows and stops there's no blockages so not really sure which it's stopping. I do have a variable speed pump any recommendations on the proper flow rate rpm on the pump itself? 20k pool sand filter older pool but everything works like new so jot sure of the issue
I have a VS pump, it fluctuates between 1100 RPM to 3100 RPM, my main question is do i set it up the flow regulator at 1100rpm ? Or the 3100 Rpm? I use a side suction port for my cleaner.
Set it for the 3100 RPM. On low speed it won't be moving but that is fine. It doesn't need a whole lot of time to clean a pool.

Thank you so much for the great videos you share. As someone new to pool maintenance you have made my life easy at least a dozen times. I have an older MX8 and have completely rebuilt it following prior videos you have posted. Unfortunately, my wheel rotation is well below the 20 to 25 revolutions per minute suggested. I have also replaced all of the hoses in the line as many were cracked at the connection points. What are some additional steps I can take to improve suction at the machine and increase the revolution of the tracks?

@@SPL Both seem solid, DE filter recently backwashed. No signs of issues with the pump, at least none I've noticed.

Zodiac MX8 fresh out of the box, never used. We connected it all up and put it in the pool. Nothing. The wheels do not turn. There is suction through the lines. Filtration system cleaned and backwashed. No debris anywhere in the system. We adjusted the suction up and down. No difference. I've combed the internet and have no clues how to jump start it to start creeping.
Could be the engine inside is out of alignment and getting jammed. Seen this with brand new units.
Must be sure pool is running. Sometimes air bubbles get into system.
It affect pressure.
Full force then connect hose in the skimmer area.
I love it! Keeps pool perfect. Leave in all the time. I would always take out of water when adding chemicals. Longer life. Drop back in . Again, make sure pressure is good if will not move .💝
I am having the exact same problem. Brand new. Suction in all parts of the hose. 3 yr old filter , VS pump, turned up over 3000 RPM’s, NOTHING moving. I can turn the wheels manually without it jamming. Help! What’s the problem???

The short answer is nowhere. Since they are patented you have to buy the Zodiac brand. They are like $20 each...
@@SPL these hoses are complete shite, dont last long atall and are very expensive. as of today is there any alternative? im considering modifying this little guy to put just one long hose on it, but before i do that i wanted your thoughts.

@@jarrodrossi yea man. there is an adapter on amazon that works great. its a 20 dollar piece and i attached to a hose i got from walmart. same hose i use for my manual vac.

Can you please tell me how to properly setup MX6 or 8 with attaching a SkimmerMotion? My pool is not that deep and small. I'm having trouble getting the SkimmerMotion to lay on top of water effectively.

Well I found a really good deal on a mx8 elite. I should have bought the rebel. I have my main drain off and nearly have to turn skimmers off to get the mx8 to work.
I use skimmer socks do you think they effect suction that much? I want the leaf canister but afraid to add since it’s already barley working . Any thoughts? Filter just cleaned .

As a new owner, this video was as frustrating as hell. It shows vivid close-ups of each piece of the vacuum, the attachments, and the various hoses, and intricate details of settings and even a phone app, without ever once showing the big picture of the entire cleaner in operation. Because of this, it is unclear to me how the entire system is supposed to operate. I followed each detail of this video, and yet, my pool cleaner is still just sitting there, in the middle of the pool, laughing at me!
Once connect it should move around the pool. If not it could be something simple.
