There are many ways to end a song on the drums, but today we're going to take a look at the "trash can ending" in particular. There's really no right or wrong way to perform this, but here are a few tips to help you out!

The day Drumeo and Stephen Taylor decided to work together was a great day for drumming!
Thanks Aaron!
I’m new to drumming but man I’m so hyped for this video, love Stephen’s channel and Drumeo so much!!!!!! Ahhhhhhhhhh
I've played 6 strokes for years and never thought of using them as a song ending. 45 yrs of playing and still learning. Thanks, man.
You're doing it the right way then ;^)
When we stop learning, we become the old guys. I don't plan on getting old anytime soon
@@StephenTaylorDrums it's not really a six stroke roll ! it's an invertion of a paradiddlediddle as double-triplets or sixtuplets (correct is double-triplets) inverted paradiddlediddle RllrrL RllrrL ......
@@norskov Finally somebody gets it. I'm sure a lot of these guys know their rudiments, and thus what the correct names are, so why don't they use them? There's no good reason not to be precise when this stuff is already codified.
This was actually super helpful and so incredibly stupidly easy that I never even thought of how simple it could be. You totally nailed it at 0:36 ; I've been playing for 18 years, with 14 and a half years of lessons, and I *still* dread when a band (or one particular worship team I play with at church) says "ok great and then we want a big splashy end, just do something crazy to end us out on this song", with them obviously not having a clue what "crazy" means besides "yo could you like, hit lots of drums quick or something". This really breaks down how stupid easy it can be. Very useful my friend. Thanks!
Love it. So glad it hit home with you
I've learn sooo much from Steven and he is a natural teacher. Love this guy!
Man, Stephen is such a well-versed drummer.
love seeing this guy on drumeo.
Thanks so much my friend
That's the video I've been waiting for! Thank you Stephen!
You're more than welcome!
Glad somebody has finally addressed this topic. It's worth mentioning that everything that came BEFORE the ending (i.e. the body of the song) should inform what you pull out of "the trash can" for an ending. Do what's appropriate. Licks are awesome, but sometimes a cymbal roll with mallets can be just as intense if that's what's called for.
Totally agree Paul. I tend to pull my can ending from elements I used in the song as well.
How have I never learned the six stroke roll before? Gonna practice that for a few hours now.
bg4567890 same lol
Off the subject a little, but a lot of great Motown hits start with a six stroke roll right out of the gate. Good luck.
I've been playing them forever. Just never thought of using them for an ending. RLLRRL
5, 6, and 7 stroke rolls are all an absolute blast! Give em a try and have fun with them. They sound sick just on their own but toss em into fills and then start "voice"ing them (move the strokes around the kit to different drums).
Bob Larson most importantly, RllrrL. The accents are important
There are trash-can ending options one can do without the signature "crash out" on the cymbals. For example, the ending of "California P.M.", a jazz-fusion/rock piece by the George Benson band (in a 1979 recording). Harvey Mason on drums does do a trash-canner on the last chord of the song---big cymbal blast, a cymbal trill, then working the skins part of the kit---and then, instead of a crash-out cymbal blast, he does a "flam crash-out" on the snare or tom without the cymbals. Still effective.
Just joined a cover band. Most of the original songs fade out. I am supposed to come up with trashcan(big rock) endings, especially for the last song of the night. This really helps. Thanks!
Makes my day to know it helped Ron!
It's 2021,but this lesson educates me in a deep learning. Thanks Stephen & Drumeo🥁
thank you this really helped relieve the pressure of my endings of songs you are great help!
one of the most useful lesson I ever got here on UA-cam
Thanks for showing and not talking for 805 of the video. Very instructive.
j glad it helped!
Thanks a lot Stephen. I'm going to go practice my six stroke roll now.
You bet Tate...6 is where it's at!
I love drumeo! And all ur lessons!👍🏽
It helped me figure out what to do at the end of a song that I have been needing to figure out how to end. I had not known that I could make my own trash can ending for a song
I don't know what Humble Pie's drummer, Jerry Shirley did for his part in song endings, but their "Rock in The Fillmore album contained some of the best signature endings I've ever heard.
Those hats are spicy! I need those!
One of my favorite things ever.
@@StephenTaylorDrums what kind of hihats are they?
Super helpful, I've been freaking out lately!
I get locked up on my endings. This is exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you.
Thanks, Stephen! This will help me a lot!
Never heard the "Trash Can" term in reference to song endings. I learned that type of song ending as "Train Wreck" endings. I like leaning new things.
You and me both Rene...never stop learning!
Same. I've always referred to it at a "Rockstar" ending.
I always heard it as a "Big Finish". Great tips here tho!
Awesome, thanks!
Super helpful! Thanks so much for explaining this--i too am freaked out about trash can endings but this made a lot of sense
Don't worry...we all freak out about them. Just gotta get a plan together lol (I speak from my own freak out experiences). Glad it helped Dave!
I wish UA-cam existed when I started playing drums when I was 14 years old back in 1999
Alexander Jamieson I prefer the train wreck (better known as the ex girlfriend ending, because my ex is a train wreck)
I have that same thought almost every time I sit down to do drum work. We would've been drum gods right?
Alexander Jamieson
When was youtube made?
I think 2005, but people didn't start sharing their knowledge until smartphones became the most common type of phone. I want to say that you didn't see these types of instructional videos, at least for music, until about 2009.
I'm self taught. I wish I would have played in school band growing up as that would have definitely helped. People compliment my drumming and I play in a rock band, but I'm nowhere near as good as I could be. Kids today need to take advantage of this stuff.
This is such a great lesson!
Thank you so much for this video!
Simple but gold!
2:23 what is that technique on the cymbals called?
i love Stephen Taylor! He is awesome!
Awesome. Thank you for sharing.
Excellent thank you

My private little fear for the past 10 years... Now I got it. Thank you!
Well then, my day's been successful. So glad it clicked for you!
very good lesson cheers
Always rocking those tight shirts, gotta love it
U are so good at this I love u so much
Great drumer ya I want to practice
This will help a lot of people. Brilliant.
Thanks so much!
This man really explains well.
Just started playing drums in a funk jam and I couldn't end the songs ill give it a try thanks for the video I have learnt to play watching you give advice top job 😉👌
So glad it helped!
OK so I'd like to learn a simple single stroke ending. Do you have a video on one?
Thanks Steve
And i loved the sound of hats and crash
Valeu Drumeu uma excelente aula como sempre.
Más que bienvenido!
Valeu Steven eu aqui no Brasil te agradeço por me revelar coisas tão valiosas.Valeu!!!
nice lesson...thank you. I LOVE that K Kerope cymbal and what also looks like a K Constantinople cymbal (AND what looks like a K custom dry ride). ;-)
Love me some Keropes. Yes, that's a K 22" Renaissance Ride and a K Custom Dry. Kid in a candy store ;^)
that is a K Kerope next to your hi-hats, is it not? What size is it? To my ears it has the perfect crash sound I am looking for. I have a lot of saving up to do before I can get me some. Right now I have a Zildjian 18" A Crash/Ride as my left crash...not bad, not bad at all, but far from a Kerope! I personally love your drumming feel and the way you teach...thank you so much!
Sean Meister I think 19". But the 18" sounds a little more "in the pocket", more compact, but still big.
yes! The 18" is what I would love to have someday as my left side crash/ride...and then a 20" in the 'ride' position on the right as my ride/crash...and the Kerope hi-hats of course...looking at spending a pretty penny but well worth it someday.
Sean Meister True!
I am a lucky guy to own the 22" and 20" Kerope, both placed on the set as a jazz setup. Just stunning and grat sounding!

Amazing! Very useful!
Glad to hear it Gustavo!
huuuuugely helpful lesson!!!
Glad to hear it!
can I have to writing notes for your drum ending, please
Very cool.
How does that bass drum sound so good
exactly what i was looking for
I've been working on my mind reading skillz...
I picked the ending called "Dun, dun dun dun dun, Dun dun!" outro part but I heard everything about you from the game "Band hero DS" or some songs from Green days dominate love slave.
WOW- I REALLY ENJOYED YOUR VID. I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS FOR A LONG TIME. MANY THANKS FOR KEEPING IT FAIRLY SIMPLE!! ALL THE BEST TO ALL>>> NOLA LOVER BOB.
If I'm going to do a "trash can" ending (I'm usually allotted about 3 per 4 hour show because rockabilly doesn't really call for too much flair from the drummer at the end of songs) I end with syncopated kicks and flams, singles, doubles, and Paradiddles around the kit. My "stinger is a 2-3 second pause, just to make sure the band knows the song is coming to an official close, and then a hit on the crashes (or toms depending upon what feels right).
Does anyone know what snare drum he is playing? Is it the Ludwig Supraphonic or am I seeing that wrong...? Sounds killer
I believe it was
in japan, they call this technique "bwaaaah!"
Sounds great! What kind of bass drum head is that?
Aquarian Super Kick 10 on batter
Good tip: don’t over complicate things, you can if you want, but sometimes playing simple can go a long way
What HH are you using, it sounds really good😊?
Dennis Pedersen That’s one I put together...16” efx crash on top and a k light top hat on bottom
I always mess up at the end lol
It's getting fluidity into it. Song is fine then ending sounds lame.
THAT BADASS BASS DRUM
I love the sound! How is it achieved?
Oskar Forever microphones
But this *tooooomph* is epic!
The heads and drum have a lot to do with it tbh. Starclassics and Aquarians.
Great advise.
Glad it helped Trevor!
Now he getting it. End playing permanently.
Thank you!!!!
You bet!
masterfully de-mystified! THANK YOU SO MUCH - at last some wisdom that solves the drum conundrum!!
joecharman You bet Joe...so glad it helped my friend
Golden cymbals for "trash can endings".
I've been waiting a long time for a video on this exact subject. I use to call it "The train wreck". Thanks
Great!!!!!!!
Thanks!
Awesome awesome awesome.... 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Thank you Thank You Thank you ;^)
Ronny Tutt always had great endings .
That TONE tho!!!
What kind of shoes are you wearing?
Funny how often I get this question...Toms Cordones with the laces taken out. Best playing shoe I've ever had. On my 4th pair.
What's the name of that ride?
K Custom Special Dry 21"
That HiHat Sounds Great !
Want to know how to end a song the right way. Drum solo or let the guitar take over then hit 2 drums at the same time as the guitar stops
I can't stand those extended rolls at the end of a song. Makes me feel like throwin' a beer bottle the drummer LOL
Weird i naturally only use six stroke rollss and double rolls for song endings..
So that's what it's generally called. A Trash can ending. now I know... : )
And knowing is half the battle (G.I. Joe taught me just about everything I needed to know as a kid)
For a three hour show I do only 2 or 3 "trash can" endings. I try to just have an ending for the song and let it be.
I'm with you on this. Too many canned endings make things sound "thrown together". When used correctly, they're fun. When it's how you end every song, it begins to sound sloppy from a performance standpoint.
Great ideas mate but my drum kit sounds like garbage can ending
Whoa, Stephen Taylor on Drumeo. Had to do a double-take.
What up Joaquim...I've been hanging with my Drumeo peeps for years now. I've been a satellite instructor for about 4 years (maybe longer). Glad you found me on here ;^)
Wow, you actually go way back! :D

Yo. Stephen!
Yo, Austin! Great to see ya on here

For some reason I could not stop thinking of Jack Black's endings in School of Rock when I saw this lol
That movie though...genius
I love listening to you Steve!
And, you do not have that big beard anymore - great! (just joke) ^^
cheers!
Lol, this was filmed in 2016 PB (pre-beard) when I was up in Canada at the Drumeo studios.
@@StephenTaylorDrums 7pm for a lesson
Would you like for me to teach you?
a lot of people commenting on the 6-stroke roll... he's actually playing an inverted paradiddlediddle as triplets.. 16 note double-triplets to be exact ! its a great rudiment, but it's not a six-stroke roll !
I really could have used this information 40 years ago instead of figuring it out the hard way 👈😎👍
Bring Gavin Harrison, I think he has a lot to offer to us!

Jony Ive teaches drums
It is impossible to get a guitarist to stop his noodling.
Might as well try to capture the wind lol...
Oh man I hAve so many good recordings from church rehearsal
Since I just received my daily email from Jared Fall containing the “how to end a song on drums” vide, I’m gonna have to post again!!! I’m not a fan of educational videos that teaches a wrong way. ....
Here goes again; “he is NOT playing a 6-stroke roll!!!!!!
he's actually playing an inverted paradiddlediddle as triplets.. 16 note double-triplets to be exact ! its a great rudiment, but it's not a six-stroke roll !
Quite literally doesn’t matter, no ones watching these videos in preparation for an exam
