I used to go to Rayburn with my buddy who fished professionally. When he was testing a new top water he would ask me to throw my bone Yellow Magic. He knew if he could out do the Magic he had a good lure. I caught a ton with the Magic and it was also easier to get distance than a popper. I’ll have to give the Berkley Splash a try. Thanks for another great video, Tod.
The best times I've found to throw a popper (not counting pencil poppers in this) is in the fall when the buzzbait bite and crankbait style wake bait starts to die off and early prespawn when the fish first start to move up. For me it seems a popper or a popping frog are usually the first topwaters that start working in late winter/early spring and usually the last topwaters to stop working in late fall/early winter. Typically in the fall, I've had best luck with a Lobina or Pop x/max. Though for the price it's hard to beat the Strike King and Booyah version they walk very easily. In the early part of the year I have yet to find a popper better than the Deps Pulsecod. I've got a few reels that probably have 3ish year old Xplasma on it. Still has it's color and a surprising amount of stiffness for how long it has been on them. Xplasma and Daiwa Samurai are the best casting reel 8 carrier braids I've ever used.
Thats awesome. I was fishing one on chickamauga one time in harrison bay. I caught 2 6lbers, and 2 5lbers on it over the course of 2 days, and then I was fishing a fluke and a wacky senko to fill out limit. My buddy was fishing a popper as well in the same general area, and he said he couldn't catch anything but dinks. We started comparing after the tourney and the only thing different really was that he was fishing it as a popper....like real distinct bloops and pauses. I was not at all.....I was walking it, and shaking it in place. There is definitely something to what you are saying about using it more as a walking bait than like a traditional popper.
KVD could tell the difference because he was unhooking a fish in an elite series tournament calling his a Strike King splash but you could clearly read Yellow magic magnum on the back of it.
18$ try 60$-100$ for a Michaels. A poper out of Japan that some made it into the states. It spit and didnt chug. Out west it was for real. I won a Michaels in a poker game at 15 years old. Yes it was named after Michael Jackson... lol
I have always liked fishing poppers real fast ,infact I caught an over the slot fish in the skeeter owners tourney on fork in 6 inches of water about ten years ago or longer time flies! I was using the bigger yellow magic tryinhg to catch a big under.
In my experience, in the northeast, adding a short (~1ft) monofilament leader might help in two ways. First, it eliminates annoying fowling of the braid with the treble hooks. Second, if you get bit by a toothy fish (pike, pickerel), it reduce the chances that the braid gets torn by the teeth of the offending fish.
There is a trick I got from Hideki Maeda (owner of Teckel Lures). Slide a bobber stop/peg on the line, then slide a clear uncut spinnerbait blade spacer or a coffee stirrer straw on the line it works great for all topwater hard baits.
Dude I love that plug my favorite was the old Zell pop,my buddy called it the meat getter, but the splash and the jr and definitely a go to when it gets tough, the braid tip I'm gunna have to do,makes total sense
Just another topic to talk about. How would you start fishing or attack a deep water reservoir with tons of grass and is very clear. When I say deep you could be off shore 20 yards and be sitting in 50-60 feet of water.
I bought a strike king popper that was in a red packaging like 10 years ago. It was different than the splash and it was in the green gizzard shad color. I broke it off this year and wasn’t able to get it back. Anybody know what that could of been?
100% agree I throw a chugbug quite a bit also but man this bait catches them and to me cast much better especially when compared to the old pop-r.... Great video as always keepem coming brother!!!
Great bait. Had luck with it this summer on clear, pressured lakes. Love the rod too! Have one and just got my 2nd thunder cricket rod. That's what I throw redeye on. Watch all your vids.. Keep up the good work and good luck in the tourneys!

Strike King Splash….
Popper is one of the 1st baits I throw... or a walking bait
I don't know how many times I just couldn't get a bite on an underwater bait, but skittering a PopR always gets me bit.
Hopefully a new series coming. Congrats
You throwing that pre-spawn?
I used to like the Excalibur Super Pop-R. This was in the mid to late nineties.
man I just scored at a garage on mystic shads and poppers
Loved all the Excalibur lures back then.

I prefer this video hands down over any controversy videos you do..Much appreciated..
Lobina rico - walk the dog real slow with pauses in between. IFKYK!

🤫 kvd only uses strike king product 😂
I still throw my 20 year old yellow majics. The finish has held up. Just change the hooks when needed - feather wears out.
Duude...just giving out all the juice lol
*glances at my mono spools that have been on there for 3 years* :)
The Jr. can be a day saver up here in North Central Wisconsin!
Thanks Todd, good video brother!
Got them Ricco Picco yellow magic.
Fishing the braid all year do you have issues with it cutting into your guides ?
Never

Man that green gizzard shad in the KVD splash 🔥 🔥 😮💨
Didn’t realize the kid splash came in a smaller size. I’ve been throwing those rio Rico’s. I’ll have to keep my eyes out for them.

Popper is a great clean up bait. I should throw it more then I do
That sure doesn’t look like Table Rock 😂😂. I wasn’t wearing shorts there today. Good luck this weekend sir!
We talk about poppers all the on different live stream. I only use yellow magic, ricco, the old pop r, cp-r, dream pop.
Had a awesome Buzzbait Bite this year, 1/4 oz. Then is got slow. Tied that Bigger one on and it was lights out.
Thanks Todd for sharing i have a lot of the rebel pop r would you say they are very similar?

What's your review of the force after a season? Love mine way more than the ultrex
Then why not use a small silent walking bait?
It’s not the same
Thanks going to try it

Yes, sir, the might might RICO son of the MICHAEL'S out of Japan...
Ssshhhhh no one knows that much about RICOS
@@MrJNOTHUM They are legendary here in AZ...
Man I love how simple you keep it Todd! I do like a short mono leader…. More abrasion resistant when those dick head pickerel eat it.
You ok no info on table rock. Not like you hope all is ok. 🙏
Yea I’m good I’ll talk about it a bunch. A lot went on and it was all good. Might not be interesting for most but for me it was great
