If you ask me I believe that f35 is a little bit better. But that depends also on which country you live. Different countries means different military needs.

@Buddy Mac F35 is a multi role fighter plane. You can use it with many different ways. F22 is mostly an air superiority fighter. Us it's a big country and has the option or the luxury to use different fighters. Greece for example my country, doesn't have this luxury. Planes here must fit for every role bc they will be more efficient and more practical.

@Preston Schreck in a dogfight pilots are those who matter not the plane itself. In Greece there was a competition between US f22 and the Greek f16 bock 50 in TDM type of game. You lock your target and he has to land in the ground. The Greek f16s won this competition.
Outdated or not, the F22 will always remain one of the most beautiful machines designed by mankind.

@Fred Garvin thats actually kind of wrong. Looks and shape of these aircraft must specifically be designed for stealth while the f22 is longer that the f35 it is far slimmer which is definitely going to make it less visible via radar

The thrust comparison forgot that the F-22 has two engines. Combined they give 70,000lbs thrust (not the 35,000 displayed).

No the F22 has a bigger payload, it's actually pretty obvious just from looking at it. The F35 has a 2 door weapons bay that holds 4 AAMRAMs. The F22 has 2 side bays that usually hold a Sidewinder in each, then it's 2 door weapons bay holds 6. The F22 also has missle pods that can be mounted on the wings but I think the F35 has something similar too. Anyways the F22 holds 2X as much in internal weapon bays. The F22 is also more stealthy even though it's bigger and older. There's a lot of secrets in the F22.

@@Damitsall That's not true, the F-35 is superior to the F-22 in terms of stealth. It is apparently less stealthy from the stern aspect, but not operationally significantly so. The F-35 is stealthier in stray electronic noise suppression, communication & aspect-dependent IR signature. At part throttle they are similar in rear-aspect IR signature, but the F-22 is less IR stealthy in full AB. The F-35 is also stealthier in long-range target-search, tracking, & radar missile queuing. Both are comparable in radar-search stealth, but the F-35 has undetectable passive search, track and attack capability that substantially out-ranges the F-22’s FLIR & new IRST.

Designed for different roles - F-22 is air superiority/dogfighter, F-35 designed to not be seen (go in, get job done, get out) well before defences can be up. Personally not fighting at all but delivering a devastating blow is more effective than hand-to-hand combat

It is not - you cannot make a plane out of metal and it be “invisible”. Stealth is designed to be a minimization on the radar, with a similar signature to a bird, but within 15 miles or so the enemy will know it’s a plane. That’s good enough because there is little time to prepare before the objective is met and departure made. F-35 also has these radar absorbing materials applied, giving “stealth” capability but not with weapons on, as the weapons cannot have stealth features. You either choose to go in “stealth” for surveillance, or weapons on to deliver the payload (not stealth).

There is so much more to these 5th Gen fighters than speed or dogfighting. F-35 is not for dogfighting and not designed to outrun - but that’s not to say by any means they are defenceless... only a select few people know the full extent of onboard technologies on the F-35 and I’m pretty sure they’ve run a risk analysis vs a F-15 and anything else for that matter. If the F-35 gets in trouble behind enemy lines, they will need support in the form of faster, more manoeuverable fighters to distract, or multiple F-35’s that can share a common target - if an F-15 pilot can outclass multiple F-35’s working together (and yes F-35 can communicate together between jets to share a common target).

What's the difference in role? Why design, manufacture and maintain two separate planes instead of having one? Would have been nice to have this fundamental question answered instead of reading spec numbers from Wikipedia.
The F-22 is specifically a dogfighter, and by far the best in the world. That’s it’s only role pretty much, so every aspect of it is catered towards things like maneuverability and thrust.
The F-35 is an all purpose fighter. It needs to be good in dogfights, and it is, but it also needs to be able to perform air-to-ground missions and such. That’s why it has the increased payload, the better avionics and equipment, and that’s also why Pratt and Whitney and GE Aviation are currently designing adaptive cycle engines to fit it. It’s the Jack of all trades, and the F-22 is the King of the skies.
Both are fantastic aircraft that were never meant to be pitted against one another. They’re the best in the world at what they were designed for.

I think it was smart on canadas part buying a nuclear capable strategic stealth bomber. Even if canada wont host nukes on its land it builds them in allied countries and has the means to do so. And with this they can get a b61 nuke they made in uk and us and equip it if and when they need or want a nuke and practical switch it to a nuclear role overnight.

It’s not a $1.5 trillion dollar plane. That's the estimated total lifetime ownership costs through 2070, including the ~$400 billion acquisition/R&D cost for 2,456 aircraft plus all upgrades, maintenance, spare parts, training (pilots and maintainers), logistics, infrastructure, simulators, technical manuals, etc.... Put differently (in perspective), ~2% of the annual defense budget. I say it’s worth it..
All of these are just copy products. Real 5th generation fighter is J20 dragon!

Well, it received a better data link. But it did not get ANY passive detection system. So the f22 STILL has zero means to track and find a F35. They had planned a multi-spectrum IRST system for the F22. Then it cut to only have a single spectrum IRST system. Then the system was 100% cut from the program. As a result, the f22 is fine against non stealth jets, but against a stealth fighter like the F35? It simply missed the newer technologies.
The F35 is a much newer technology platform, and it was designed under the assumption that most countries would be flying and building stealth jets. That has not happened.
So most other nations failed to respond when the f117 came out with stealth.
Then most nations failed to respond when the f22 came out.
And now most nations failed to respond when the F35 came out.
So the USA how now at least 2 or 3 generations of experience in building stealth jets, and how they work, and how they are to fight.
The F35 was designed to fight against other stealth jets - not so with the f22.
The f22 can ONLY use radar, and that is not sufficient. The F35 has full 360 degrees IRST tracking with its DAS system. That system is MUCH better then the IRST pods we see on some Russia and jets like the Rafael.
As such, the F35 will start to see and find the f22 at about a range of 50 miles. Below that range, being both jets have stealth? Well the F35 has BETTER stealth and its tracking systems will produce a weapons grade lock on the f22 - and do so LONG BEFORE the f22 can do the same to the F35. The stealth should give cover down to about the 15 mile range - perhaps a bit less with the F35.
The problem is that the F35 will see, find, track and target the f22 long before the f22 has a chance to see and find the F35.
The result? The f22 is a sitting duck against the F35. The F35 simply has several systems that allow passive tracking and targeting without radar - and the F22 missed that technology refresh, and as a result is handicapped in a big way.

Well, you better start reading if you going to have a informed opinion and knowledge base which is required for you to make valid and logical conclusions.
At the war games, the F35 is eating the f22's for lunch.
You see, WAY back in the 1950's? Well, at that time speed of the jet was one of the more defining values required for a fighter jet.
The issue is NOW jets fly fast enough. Adding additional speed to your jet does NOT translate into kills in the battle field.
So does the f22 have award winning speed and what we call an kinetic abilities envelope? yes, it is 2nd to none in that area.
However some extra speed does not rack up kills in the battle field. You have to see, track, and then produce a kill solution, and the F35 runs circles around the F22 for this kind of task.
I mean, in the Falklands war? (1982)
The Argentine air force had 175 Mach 2.0 able jets (French made Dassault Mirage III intercepttor jets).
They also had French made Dassault Mirage V attack jets - they are rated at Mach 1.9!
The British? They had some little turtle slow Harrier jump jets.
Those Harrier jets could NOT EVEN hit Mach 1.0!!! - they were sub-sonic!!!
So, on paper, 24 slow turtle moving SUB sonic jets are to take on a air force with 175+ Mach 2.0 able jets? Are you kidding me?
Well, as history shows?
The British TROUNCED the Argentine air force. Argentine lost about 45 jets and that does NOT include Argentine jets lost due to crashes.
The British lost about 5 Harriers. 3 due to crashes, and 2 were shot down.
The point? don't assume speed helps all that much.
In the first and 2nd gulf wars (1991, and 2001). We saw USA fighters jets engage jets of all kinds from Russia and France and others.
They found that ONLY 3% of the engagements used speeds above Mach 1.0. In other words, supersonic speed was BARELY used, and it was NOT a significant factor for 97% of the air battels.
So Falklands war (1982): speed was not the deciding factor for jet fighter engagements.
So Gulf war I - 1991: again, speed was not a deciding factor for jet engagements.
So Gulf war II 2001: again, speed was not a deciding factor for jet fighter engagements.
Now does speed matter? Sure it does. But as the Falklands war shows, a small bunch of 23 sub sonic jets took on jets that could hit Mach 2.0, and that speed advantage did not translate into a tactical advantage. Now there ARE cases where speed matters - but jets like the F35 can hit Mach 1.6 - and that is sufficient for about 97% of the tasks that such jets require.
The simple matter right now in the air battlefield, the F35 will trounce the F22 - and the F22 simply has no real abilities to take on a F35.
and if your not going to read any thing here? Then your not going to learn anything, and as a result you not learn from past battles, and how modern air battler engagements work, let alone recent war history that shows jets that can find targets first, and shoot to kill is what also wins the day - and the F35 is 2nd to none in this ability right now - and that includes engagements against the f22.
I can only hope and pray that it is NOT you that ever makes a decision as to what a fighter jet needs or which ones to buy to win air battles, since you making the wrong assumptions.
There is a great story in Gulf war I. Some Americans where in a armored troop carrier, and they had a high ranking Iraqi officer they had captured. On the big folding door in the armored vehicle there was a portrait (picture) of the German Field Marshal Rommel (famous for tank wars in the Desert - just like the Gulf war was - in the desert). The captured Iraqi officer who spoke broken english? He asked why do you have a picture of Field Marshal Rommel who was a enemy of the USA during World War II?
And a very young solder in that transporter piped up and stated this to the Iraqi Officer:

The raptors ability to negate “stall” through design features and high maneuverability is unparalleled by any other aircraft in existence. Only the recent Russian SU class can come somewhat close. The F-35 has failed in this department miserably.
The F-22 is old and outdated it can't do helf the stuff that most jet's can do, it relys on its stealth to much like the F-35, the F-22 has only one main radar system with no IRST or other systems to help plus it does not have a helmet lock on and fire system like most jet's, the performance is good with being one of the best not the best but still good, the Eurofighter has better specs and performance plus the Eurofighter is more advanced with better hardware and software, the F-35 really does not have any performance only stealth and software, and the software is still buggy as hell, 500+ bugs and the G3 Helmet still can't use a lot of its systems, the F-35 does have other systems on board not just relying on one radar system to find and track, the F-35 is not good in performance Hight of 50,000f, speed of 1200mph, sustained turn rate of about 17 D/S less then a F-16's, plus the single engine is to under powered for a jet of that weight, the Missiles they both use are same due to the F-35 not able to use the Meteor at the moment, so both use the 120C/D the 120D max range is about 160km with a max effective range of about 70 to 80km, with the APG-81 on the F-35 being more powerful vs the F-22's APG-77 the F-35 would see the F-22 first but at what range it depends on a lot of things, for example the RCS of both Jets are small but when comparing radars vs RCS most numbers used are from the smallest number on reports, so for example the F-35 can be seen from about 55 to 60km but that is basically front facing, so the F-35 and F-22's RCS range are still in and or around the 100km range from other angles, and due to not always knowing where the enemy is, a F-35 could see a F-22 from about 70km for example, using its APG-81 and not using its IR, for example the Eurofighter's IRST can see the F-35 at around 70+km, due to the heat from the wings that would be the same for the F-22 as well, going back to the Missiles and guns, the 120D is a Single rocket means as soon as its stops the energy is bleeding slowing it down and less agile, with the RWS's on both will see when being locked on to so can start to counter, to try to bleed as much energy from the Missile to lower the hit rate, BVRM's have a bad hit rate at distance already so trying to lower it more is better obviously, plus the F-35 has more Defences like Flares DRS Chaff Jamming and more, but the F-22 has the agility to better bleed the Missiles energy, plus the F-22 has a single inbuilt gun, where the F-35 only the A type has single inbuilt 25mm, the B and C types in gun pods, more rounds then A but has a bigger RCS, for the APG-77 to find.

In a WVR fight the F-22 wins against the F-35.
In a BVR fight the F-35 wins against the F-22.

The Euro fighter is not more advanced than the F22 the F22 has better situational awareness with a better short range missle for dogfights while having thrust vectoring the F22 engine produces more thrust the F22 only competitor for top gun is the Su57 which only have 1 for combat and 10 for test with already having engine problems and control system malfunctions
