I am now getting back into DCS after 10 years of holding off. I used to fly the F-18 and the A-10. Watching your videos has made me want to revisit the amazing world of DCS and attempt to retrain on some of my favorite aircraft!
I think what a lot of people don't understand about the F-35 is that it was designed to be a node in a distributed system. GS was kind of making this point. Yes, a lone F-35 would get absolutely creamed in a one-v-one with an F-22. However, that's not how it was designed to fight. If a (admittedly fantastical, never gonna happen) hostile F-22 managed to get that close to an F-35, it would be seconds away from being creamed by another F-35 or (eventually) a missile truck drone. The F-35 is a sensor/network package first, weapon system second. It's designed for a world where the targeting system is on one aircraft, the weapon is on another, and the engagement authority is yet somewhere else.
I dunno if this has already been mentioned, but the ability for the F-35 pilot to shoot missiles off boresight thanks to their helmet mounted displays and the plane's distributed aperture system might mean that the F-35 doesn't necessarily need to turn into its target to get a missile lock, and it's possible the F-22 might have the same capabilities in the future. Regardless, this was an interesting matchup, keep it up!
So I worked with armament in the USAF, and I can confirm that’s not an F-35 exclusive. The capability exists on the F-15’s, F-16’s and the F-22’s as well because it’s just a link between the JHMCs system and the AIM-9X. I think that was the acronym, but basically it’s just the helmet paired with the AIM-9X’s camera.
@@jesusofbullets oh that's neat! I was always under the impression it's an F-35 specific capability since I've always heard of off bore sight locking in context to the F-35 and not any other aircraft. So I really appreciate the info!
@@SmoochyRoo Now what the F-35 DOES have is a unique data link, meaning the F-35 can lock targets and relay targets to F-15’s behind holding a ton of medium range radar guided missiles to unleash a salvo before even being detected.
The F-35 is said to have excellent sensor fusion and its special helmet, which results in improved situational awareness of the pilot. I think this is not quite modeled in DCS, or at least not as impactful as it probably is in real life. Even if the F-35 loses every single merge, the technology should enable the pilot to avoid such situations entirely.
The F-35 distributed aperture system in combination with its special helmet enables the pilot to fire Sidewinders in any direction, including directly behind him.
Thank you for understanding that the F-35 wasn't meant to do this. It's honestly sad to see how many people don't get that. Very glad you actually did your research instead of unjustly blasting Fat Amy :)
Man, I never even knew a jet could be that maneuverable, much less the F-22 being able to do all of that. I knew it was a capable fighter, but to see that stuff in video is just mind-blowing.
The defense department gets a lot of crap for taking forever to develop programs, but the fact that the US has already flown/tested successors to the f22/6th gen fighters, the b21 is right around the corner, and the navy’s unmanned tanker, hypersonic glide vehicles and Unmanned wingman programs are advancing is really cool.
The F-35 is designed to be exported around the world to pretty close to anyone that can pay for it. The F-22 is the US's leading-tech air superiority fighter. Do you honestly think the US would be selling an export product that could down our own lead fighter? BTW, the true specs of the F-22 are NOT modeled in this system. They're best guesses.
F-35 has inferior maneuverability. There's only so much off-boresight missiles could help. But they WONT help against an enemy that's consistently on your 9 o'clock and gets to fire missiles first. As such the F-22 has all the advantages.
@@michaelstodovski2219 The F35s sensors and helmet sight can take full advantage of the AIM9X and can even fire it 180°. It is a huge advantage over the F22 which has to turn its nose onto the general area to get a lock because it lacks the offboresight ability. Yes the F22 has better kinematics but the F35s sensors and helmet sight make it very dangerous if not almost equal to the F22 in a real world fight.
@@cattledog901 But the very missile itself has limitations..... It is ALWAYS better and more reliable to fire off missiles from the front. If a enemy is trying to approach you from a distance shooting from behind might be valid.... *But not within active Air Combat Maneuvering/Dogfights* You see here Aim-9X missiles missing *in much more favorable nose positions.* How on Earth is a missile gonna do a 180 and kill an enemy that's right up your ASS from 400 meters away? That's impossible.
From what I can recall, the UK was offered the F-22, but it was deemed unaffordable. Japan was also given a chance to acquire a downgraded export variant of the F-22, but they were uninterested in helping to develop what was basically a watered down F-22. The UK and Israel have extremely strong ties with the US. So much so that their F-35s are the only export versions that do not include Lockheed Martin's "off button", which is a safety precaution in all other nation's exported F-35s.
I gotta say this tho, the F-35's capabilities in this video were nerfed as he was carrying the AIM-9M in the video, let him have the 9X which is what the F-35 would really carry, and let him use off boresite as it would be his only way to defend against the F-22
Only thing about that is the F-35 can't actually carry any AIM-9 in a stealth configuration. The Sidewinder's seeker head needs to see its target to lock on before launch. With the F-22 that's possible as it has special bays with rails that extend and angle the Sidewinder outwards. The F-35 OTOH needs to carry the AIM-9s on wing pylons. I've been wondering about this. I mean, block 4 F-35s are supposed to be able to carry 6 AMRAAMs. I don't know how realistic DCS is (I don't play it myself, just here to watch GS and learn stuff), but quite often radar-guided missiles seem to be easy to defend against. It's good to get a guy to be defensive, I guess, but wouldn't internally carried AIM-9s increase the lethality of the F-35? Just wondering. But I guess nobody actually knows how realistic DCS is wrt the F-35 and F-22 (and possibly other types).
@@starbase218 Well in this case stealth isn't even the factor since it's a dogfight so it shouldn't really matter, however for the real deal this was actually answered in the FPP Podcast I think the F-35 episode or the one after that
@@F22raptor46 It's true that stealth is no factor here. But that doesn't mean the F-35 in question is always going to carry external ordnance if it may end up in a situation like this (at least that's the way I see it). Are you talking about the Fighter Pilot Podcast? I just googled and found it. I'll check it out.
Growling Sidewinder, I watch a lot of military aircraft content on UA-cam. Your videos stand out for the quality of thought and analysis. Thank you. It helps an ordinary person like me appreciate the subjects you explain.
You honestly have to give credit to Lockheed, General Dynamics, and Boeing created a monster in the f-22. It’s a cool story how they created this masterpiece.
It was really funny as that was the first nickname given to it by it's pilots. However I understand that it finally found it's true nickname amongst pilots as they found it's proper role and more info was declassified, due to how it does in strikes, which is primarily how it fights; it is now the "Panther." It makes sense too. It goes in unseen and pounces, then is off. Definitely want to see a BVR fight against the two though. That would be a much more interesting and fair fight as they are both stealth aircraft. Stealth doesn't help much in a dogfight, I mean the F-16C will fairly consistently beat the F-35 in a dogfight.
@@spartan9458 How will the AMRAAM do in BVR however, vs either one of the two? Maybe an F-15EX would be ever superior to both those then, given it's IRST and back seater to assist ??
@@demmemess4456 "much greater" is a bit of an exaggeration. And doesn't the f-35 have better thermal sensors? I'm not sure if that's modeled in DCS targeting acquisition.

Nice demo of the differences in design and role of two exceptional aircraft. Like many here I would be interested in a high-quality BVR encounter as it would be fascinating to see you and your opponent(s)? doing the beam and chaff routine against the long-range AAMRAMs and also how well the LPI radars work. F35s advanced ECM capabilities(if modelled?) should be superior to the raptor and I would like to see the effect on the fight outcomes.
As someone who has a little more knowledge on the F-35 than the general person on the street, I knew where this was going before I even clicked. They’re two different aircraft with two different purposes. What I think would be cool is to see F-22s and 35s fighting other aircraft like you guys did before with the 22s a while back.
There I was on the back of the 9th hole was setting up to get on the green, infront of me was the bunker... And out of no where a plane crashed I to the bunker.
Interesting to see these dog fights but I'd like to see more videos of these aircraft performing the roles they were most designed for and performing missions they would most likely be used for in a military conflict.
I'm here after a Raptor F22 took out a UFO over Alaska, Yukon, and Lake Huron. Long live the Raptor. I feel safe sleeping at night knowing the Raptor is out there ready to defend. Thank you.
The F-15&F-16 were meant to work together. The viper was obviously also meant as a cheaper fighter compared to the F-15. And now we have the same situation with the F-22&F-35. F-16&F-35 are both meant as strike fighters that have a capability to protect themselves if needed. But the F-15&F-22 were designed from the ground up as air supremacy fighters.
F-35 would hold the upper hand in BVR because of DAS and EOTS. In realistic terms, they'd both be running with radars off to avoid detection. F-35 would see first and shoot first. It could fire 4 AAMRAMS and then just run away. F-22 couldn't do anything about it.
No it wont. In BVR the fight will be even more unfair due to F-35's lower speed its missiles and it will have much less energy to maneuver. The f-22 also has a low RCS from the front. It is also likely that the raptor's radar has more transmitter receiver modules than f-35.
This merge would never happen though, they are both primarily designed for BVR where the F-35's superior avionics would give it the edge. In fact it seems the F-35's 180 degree off-boresioght capability wasn't modeled here, it should be able to fire a fox-2 more or less at the same time as the F-22
The f-22 likely has avionics just as good as the f-35 if not better. It's why f-22 tech isn't exportable and top secret, just like the b-2. The cockpit layouts are even classified. Why would the US military export planes with better avionics than its air superiority fighter? This is why the US military is apprehensive about Japan's tactical fighter program, they want to use the yf-23 airframe but it would basically have f-15j and f-35 avionics. If Japan brought the yf-23 up to production status it would likely outperform the f-22.
The fact that they can't use the full potential of these fighter jets during shows or training is insane. I can't imagine these in combat mainly because you can't see them coming. The maneuverability of these jets maybe a lot more advanced than what we see.
When I saw the title, I wondered what this video was even about. But I still enjoyed watching it. The background to both fighters and their intended roles was a nice touch!
Imagine having an airframe and weapon system design so advanced that you don't let your fighter pilots practice true engagements with other countries because those other countries might actually catch up with a "20 year old design". Insane. F22 for life
The military actually did this year and the F-35 blew the Raptor out of the water with I believe 22 kills to 1. The F-22's only kill was when it actually had visual contact
People forget that IRL the F-35's sensor fusion allows it to make a more extreme use of the latest aim 9xs, the F-35 can have a missile fire and do a 180°, while the 22 needs to turn into its target, this gives the F-35 a massive advantage should a merge occur with any fighter.
@J I mean there hasn’t been much jet to jet combat with today’s tech, so we really can’t judge it 100% but due amramms and long range AAMs I would say yes but I think dog fighting will still come up
@@ws6619 as far as I know we dont have any actual footage of how the missile does this, but I am assuming it would use control surfaces to turn before ignition, the Isrealis have also developed this capability with the Python V missile
Imagine being in a country at war with the US, you just got a brand new F-35 and you go up in it one day because you got a report of enemy aircraft and all of a sudden an F-22 blows right past you and you look back to see it circling before you even can start turning
The f35 is not designed for dogfights and more for stealth and multi role mission whereas f22 is a combat aircraft, it’s obviously gonna win in a dogfight
Jesus, that insane turn rate. I remember playing wing commander back in the day and that looks exactly like when you go from flying the banshee which is alright in it's way to flying the dragon and it's like, oh, I've hit late game and you can suddenly take on full squadrons with ease where a pair of fighters could mess you up early game.
Love the informational stuff at the beginning, always something I love seeing. Also, they ought to add something to the F-22 mod that just says "Goodbye" (like the old AOL/AIM signoff) whenever you launch a missile. Good on ya for getting revenge on the Trash Dove for wrecking your F-14 a while back.
The F-35 was designed to be a universal aircraft with next to no interesting tricks. It’s an aircraft known for problems and lack of ability against the F-22. What is little known is that the XF-23 has had a renaissance from air force brass. It looks as if a newly revamped version might see the sky’s in 2025. The F-22 will also see a complete overhaul from armament to avionics. And, if that wasn’t enough, the new F-16 will also be built to replace older models. The B-52 finally gets new engines and a complete upgrade to flight avionics. The F-15 is an ongoing upgradable airframe. It too will see some cutting edge improvements. It’s the only fighter aircraft that can have an entire wing sheered off and still manage to land. The A-10 has found it’s second wind and is not canceled. What’s being discovered is the cost of entirely new aircraft from conception to the air is so costly that it makes more sense to extend and improve the life of existing airframes.
Yes, they would be because SU-57 and F-22 were designed for close-range, visual range engagements. The F-35 is meant to use its stealth and excellent sensors to engage from beyond visual range with long range missiles. Honestly, putting the F-35 in a close range dogfight with anything isn't really doing justice to its capabilities.
The f22 may always be my favorite fighter jet, but they did the f35 dirty in dcs. While it would still be outperformed by the f22, it should realistically have much better maneuverability than displayed here.
At range/not in a dogfight scenario, the F35 would have the upper hand. She'd detect the F22 before and, she has more advanced systems (including EW/Decoy and all) With that said, both were designed to work with each other; the Raptor engages air targets, the Lightning everything else.
I live in Canada, and we've (the public) have been painfully waiting for the government to decide between the F35 and the Gripen JAS39E for our next fighter. Could you do this same video but with those two aircraft? I've always wondered which plane would win off the merge. Thanks for all your videos, I love them!
at this point it would be cheaper to design the successor with the last 20 years of technological improvements than restarting old production while trying to update 23 year old design.
@@Asghaad did u hear that old earth update nerfed the f-22 they removed it out of the game so those who have it are the only ones in the game and if u trade then they are worth a lot

They're doing it in the video game simulator and that's not how those plane fight.
@@SmoochyRoo
Now what the F-35 DOES have is a unique data link, meaning the F-35 can lock targets and relay targets to F-15’s behind holding a ton of medium range radar guided missiles to unleash a salvo before even being detected.
@@jesusofbullets F-22 does not support HMCS....no off foresight capability with AIM-9X
The F-22 is still the sexiest jet ever made
The F-35 is said to have excellent sensor fusion and its special helmet, which results in improved situational awareness of the pilot.
WOW!!!! I was literally searching for F22 vs F35 yesterday and was surprised you'd not done it yet. And now...here it is like magic :D
Man, I never even knew a jet could be that maneuverable, much less the F-22 being able to do all of that. I knew it was a capable fighter, but to see that stuff in video is just mind-blowing.
“A completely balanced fight with no exploits” - Me right now
“They were meant to fight together” but the gs community just wants to take all of its toys and bang it against the f22 to see them lose
Just like making your plastic army men fight your new Iron Man toy
The defense department gets a lot of crap for taking forever to develop programs, but the fact that the US has already flown/tested successors to the f22/6th gen fighters, the b21 is right around the corner, and the navy’s unmanned tanker, hypersonic glide vehicles and Unmanned wingman programs are advancing is really cool.
but they announced that they were going to upgrade F-22 into a 6th generation fighter, so it's gonna be around for sometime.
We will never know what the B2 and F22 were fully capable of…and that’s exactly what they were designed for.
Aerodynamics:
F-22: “You are temporary canceled”
It seems that the F-35's high off-bore sight is not modeled here, in a WVR fight, the F-35 might actually have an advantage.
I was thinking the same thing. The F35 is fighting with one hand tight behind its back. How about a guns only fight.
*But not within active Air Combat Maneuvering/Dogfights*
You see here Aim-9X missiles missing *in much more favorable nose positions.*
How on Earth is a missile gonna do a 180 and kill an enemy that's right up your ASS from 400 meters away? That's impossible.
From what I can recall, the UK was offered the F-22, but it was deemed unaffordable. Japan was also given a chance to acquire a downgraded export variant of the F-22, but they were uninterested in helping to develop what was basically a watered down F-22. The UK and Israel have extremely strong ties with the US. So much so that their F-35s are the only export versions that do not include Lockheed Martin's "off button", which is a safety precaution in all other nation's exported F-35s.
What is the off button
Buddy, a fully loaded BVR fight between the F35 and the Raptor. That is the fight I want to see. Both are really impressive BVR fighters.

Did GS just say: "That is one dead 'Fat Amy'?" Did I hear that correctly? Cuz if I did...that was funny as hell!!!!
Maybe an F-15EX would be ever superior to both those then, given it's IRST and back seater to assist ??
the f-22 just checkmates everyone it seems, even the f-35!
I would really like to see a BVR engagement.
I slide into the comments section to seek a BVR engagement video and what do I see..?
seeing that the F22 has much greater stealth capability, the results would most likely be the same. F35 would have a better chance though
Nah it would amount to both be boxing with blindfolds on. All the punches will miss until both get within grappling range, aka WVR fights.
@@demmemess4456 "much greater" is a bit of an exaggeration. And doesn't the f-35 have better thermal sensors? I'm not sure if that's modeled in DCS targeting acquisition.
@@johnrollex680 So if they are even in such BVR engagements, they’ll most likely both survive until distance has closed and the same result would probably occur

The F-22 was so advanced and expensive and despite being the first Generation 5 it still poses as one of the or atleast the best Generation 5 Aircraft
As someone who has a little more knowledge on the F-35 than the general person on the street, I knew where this was going before I even clicked. They’re two different aircraft with two different purposes. What I think would be cool is to see F-22s and 35s fighting other aircraft like you guys did before with the 22s a while back.

And that initial BVR engagement would force the F-22 on the defensive and basically allow the F-35 to position however it likes for a second shot
No it wont. In BVR the fight will be even more unfair due to F-35's lower speed its missiles and it will have much less energy to maneuver. The f-22 also has a low RCS from the front. It is also likely that the raptor's radar has more transmitter receiver modules than f-35.

Interesting. I never knew the roles of the 22 and 35 were so different.
This merge would never happen though, they are both primarily designed for BVR where the F-35's superior avionics would give it the edge. In fact it seems the F-35's 180 degree off-boresioght capability wasn't modeled here, it should be able to fire a fox-2 more or less at the same time as the F-22
F-22 is more stealthy though, if we’re talking about BVR.
@@EddyA1337 It wasn't exported because of US congress not because it was so highly classified that not even allies could operate it.

He's 100% rite the F 35 is a bomber that can defend and escape an enemy aircraft tryin to engage it but it's no match for the F 22
People forget that IRL the F-35's sensor fusion allows it to make a more extreme use of the latest aim 9xs, the F-35 can have a missile fire and do a 180°, while the 22 needs to turn into its target, this gives the F-35 a massive advantage should a merge occur with any fighter.
going from Mach 1 to zero to Mach 1 to do a '180' is pretty much a fantasy.
Yea the helmet the f-35 pilots have is something else. I wish the f-22 had the helm, but would be extreme overkill 🤣

And people still say the F-35 is way more advanced because of a helmet but it can’t compare to F-22 cause how it performs can’t be realesed
It is more advanced for what it’s supposed to do.
Imagine being in a country at war with the US, you just got a brand new F-35 and you go up in it one day because you got a report of enemy aircraft and all of a sudden an F-22 blows right past you and you look back to see it circling before you even can start turning

This map looks amazing, so much detail.
They do an annual war games with a lot of countries involving mass air to air combat, and the F-22 always comes in first and the F-35 in second.
That first merge was so close that the pilots could have reached out of their respective cockpits and high-fived each other. Lmao.
What’s being discovered is the cost of entirely new aircraft from conception to the air is so costly that it makes more sense to extend and improve the life of existing airframes.
f22 is unbeatable, over 20 years old and he is still the most incredible fighter of all time.

Don't feed the troll... I love how silly people speak about the best air force in the world.
The f22 may always be my favorite fighter jet, but they did the f35 dirty in dcs. While it would still be outperformed by the f22, it should realistically have much better maneuverability than displayed here.

F-22: I kill all birbs. You never see me. Only America get me.

Seems like the F-22 is far superior as it applies to dogfights.
At range/not in a dogfight scenario, the F35 would have the upper hand. She'd detect the F22 before and, she has more advanced systems (including EW/Decoy and all) With that said, both were designed to work with each other; the Raptor engages air targets, the Lightning everything else.
