You're right...Oops! Edit: Also the biggest tragedy in this is that surf is the coolest name ever and people who don't read the comments will never get to know that... 😔
A person who makes videos of THIS quality should have more than 3.66K subscribers holy. Got here via your tetris video and you are still so underrated. You deserve a lot!
You took this comment right out of my hands, that's exactly what I was about to say! This guy is gonna blow up in the next year if he keeps this level of quality, I'm exited to see what he comes up with next.
Thank you so much for this video. I played Celeste (the "fat" version) and I found that computer with Pico 8 Celeste. Back then I thought it was just a cool easteregg and Pico 8 is just a parody of an old console like NES. I didn't know that Pico 8 actually exists. I think the concept of that fantasy console is super cool. The whole thing gives me gameboy vibes: the graphics and game cadridges. I really loved playing gameboy as a kid. And just as you miss when the game consoles were so different from each other that you could tell from the graphics alone which console it was. Also thanks for crediting music and games in the video. You deserve way more attention, because there aren't many youtubers these days that put this much passion in their videos. Wow I don't usually write comments this long, but I just needed to thank you for that video. (also sorry for any mistakes I'm not native english speaker)
Thank you! I also thought PICO-8 was just a parody at first and only later realized that it was an actual thing when I watched a documentary about the making of Celeste. The game and music credits take a fairly long time to make, but I'd say it's worth it as I don't like it when I see a game that looks cool and have to ask in the comments because it's not credited, so I'm happy people are noticing.
Also the video turned out really good!! I think maybe you should change the thumbnail though. The elements are really difficult to understand on a small screen and I don't really know what I'm looking at/what it means at a glance.
@@HeyZKay Thank you for the kind words and the feedback. I'm honestly very tired because I spent the past 2 weeks speedrunning this video's production so I'll look into the thumbnail at a later date.
This could be a really cool game jam concept Like the game jam could have rules like - only 16 colours, - only 256/256 sprite sheet and nothing else - limited polygons in 3D
Your videos are always extremely well researched, well animated, and are very thorough when talking about the topic of discussion. Your channel is sorely underrated. Thanks for making some really good shit.
This is an awesome video, i have played around with picocad but had no what it came from. Such a well structured video and really engaging start to finish, brb playing celeste 2
As a guy writing a book on this software, I appreciate the work you've put into this video. It's fantastic and and excellent summary of the Fantasy Console. You'll likely be cited in the book because of it too!
Seconding the many comments that say you've got waaay too few subscribers for the quality of videos you produce. This was truly enjoyable to watch several times over, especially the reviews of individual games: Succinct yet thorough. Hey, look at that - you got the captions added! It was a great pleasure working with you and I'm excited to see future videos and watch your channel grow. ✌🍍
Hey. I just discovered your channel this morning, and I already binge-watched all your content. In A Day. At first I didn't know what I was getting into when youtube recommended me your Tetris effect video, but the quality of the video blew me away. I had RARELY seen something this good ! Seriously ! I was even more shocked when I discovered that you only had about 10 videos. 10 ! And they are all of great quality, with amazing visual effects, writing, and overall content ! I am VERY happy to have stumbled into this hidden gem. I want to say that you are doing an amazing job, and that your content is massively under-rated. I hope you'll gain more and more of a following as time goes on, and I will be sure to catch every single one of your videos as they come out. Thanks a lot for such quality content. Have a nice day :)
WOAH! I really appreciate the tip! If you like my research for this video, wait until the next one comes out. I'm really going above and beyond for that one. But... it still needs more time in the oven.
I could definitely see the Voxatron being a great foundation for an arcade game. The price point is insane for a single consumer, but it looks like something that would be right at home at a Dave & Busters or something like that.
A really good overview of the Pico-8! I'd been aware of the fantasy console, but I'm only starting to take deeper dives on it now. Really awesome video!
absolutly great video. I'm going to check out some of these virtual consoles now because I F*ing love graphical OS s and this looks like it can be a fun and interesting deep dive. thank you
Dloaded pico8 a few years back and got back into it seriously with wanting to create a simple verticle shooter in mind and found your video this morning very refreshing and thank you for presenting it in a fun manner, very informative and well researched
Wow, what an incredible video! I was curious to see this video since I saw the title and today I finally managed to watch it. And what a good surprise! This video is very inspiring! I'm doing a project for my Design college about the limitations and retro aesthetics of old games and consoles. I want to understand why creators still choose to limit themselves even though they have so many tools and resources nowadays. And I want to create a game for PICO-8 that is a perfect platform to explore self-imposed limits in retro game creation. And your video helped me a lot! I learned a lot of new and interesting things that will help me in my project. Thank you very much for the content!
New upload! I might have to save this for later, can't watch right now.. Surprised I missed the notification. Also, JESUS. You jumped in subscribers from the last time I checked!
Back again, my life has been a mess, but I’ve switched to more advanced 3D software awhile ago, and it seems someone wants to commission me. I’ve never done commissions for my art, but it’s nice to see that people appreciate my art to this degree.
These videos feel like you were preparing your entire life refining your techniques until that perfect moment to make a breakthrough, call me impressed.
Any history of fantasy consoles should start with the 1970s CHIP-8, which people still develop for to this day. It is far more limited than the Pico-8, however. About the voxel games, they feel like a good match for the Tilt Five system which was created specifically for 3D board games.
omg did you just make a half an hour long video about the game engine of some of my favorite games that i didn't even know existed?! btw please play slimey jump it's literally my second favorite indie game (besides minecraft)
Now, a hardware developer needs to see the 30+ minute deep dive into fantasy consoles that spawned thousands of games, and make a physical console that is a real representation of their fantasy specs, which also plays every game made for that console
Personally can't wait for the release of Picotron :) ...currently useable in a browser only tho at this stage, but its like Pico8 without all the restrictions and a higher resolution.
I have an idea of another consumer electronic with a 3D display. The Nintendo 3DS. it's been hacked quite a lot, so it is completely possible to build custom software for it. And it's soon going to be abandoned by Nintendo, so no need to worry about bans or anything.
That's a really good idea! Didn't think of that. The many many 3DS consoles out there would make a Voxatron homebrew app very accessible, although you'd lose the ability to walk around a 3D scene and view it from multiple angles. Also now that I think about it, the Quest 3 (which was unannounced when I published this video) and its MR capabilities could in theory turn *any* table into a Voxatron table. It's even kind of happening right now with Lego Bricktales.
There should be a Pico-8 “sequel system” of sorts. It should be to the Pico-8 what the SNES is to the NES. If it was me making it, I think I would call it the Pico-16. The Pico-8 does 8-bit stuff, and the Pico-16 would be good for 16-bit stuff, which naturally comes with a higher “token” limit.
There kinda is already, the guy making it is already working on something. Problem is that pico 8 itself is only in beta, and has been for 8 years or so by now and is still actively being worked on, so the other project is in alpha and will take quite a long time to get up to where pico 8 is today
Just discovered Pico-8 today and honestly, it's cool as fuck. I also realised I owned it via that Itch bundle, haha. Just wish there was a native Android port.
Hey man, you mentioned in previous video. That you pre Recorded all nitrome games for your retospective video. Do you still have that footage? I would like to finish your work and bring closure to the retospectiv series. But since flash is dead i cannot capture new material. It would be an honour!
I’m making progress in PicoCAD. I’m not quite that good, but it’s progress. It helped with my art block, but it made my anxiety worse. Edit: also a quick question. did you change the thumbnail? I remember it being different, but then again my memory sucks.
Oh no you have so few videos :( Btw how did you make the part at 1:57 ? Is it in a 3D space using blender or something or is there a simpler way to do this kind of cool stuff I don’t know about?
Yes. These videos take a very long time to make, please be patient. As for the sequence you're referring to, it was mostly made in After Effects using 3D layers, with the TV rendered in Blender.

After Effects for 2D animation, Blender for 3D animation and Premiere Pro to stitch everything together.
