This video is based on the work of other smart people. Flow by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Actionable Gamification by Yu-Kai Chou and Rules of Play by Katie Salen and Eric Zimmerman.
The two games I showed as examples are One Finger Death Punch and Outer Wilds.

Jonas: talks about how fun this button he made is.
Me: "But... I can't press it. I want to press it."
Imagine this in vr
Seriously though, who wants this to be an actual game? Cause I'd play it.
Why is this not a game
PETITION TO MAKE THIS AN ACTUAL GAME
I really want to press that button
Title: "can we make this button fun to press"
ACTUAL Title: "The three main keys to game design"
The chosen title is more fun than the actual one. Guess he knows his stuff.
To me the actual title sounds like a lesson and I don't like learning.
I mean this is a really good way to learn . I had FUN watching the video . I learned about what makes activities fun . So yeah Gamification for the win!
you guys, I'm not saying he should've used an actual title instead ToT, i'm just saying it was a good tutorial hidden behind another title. I'm not criticizing their choices.
Well, I didn't expect the video to turn oit the way it was. I thought of it more like some cookie clicker tutorial and not a lesson in game design. In that regard its mire like Anti-Clickbait as the video delivered more than promised
If the title were the bottom one I'd think I'll feel bored because I'm not into game design but the top title made it seem like I didn't know what I was getting myself into
Dunno why this was recommended but I like where this is going

Happy to hear that. Thank you. :)
What part of it is hidden?

f4Andrew7 what?
f4Andrew7 he didnt say in the description that its a tutorial on how to make a boring game fun.
You should make this into a complete game called "The Fun Button" or something like that where you slowly add all of these features as the player levels up. That will give the button another dimension, progress.
Multiplayer io game 😂
I really thought that I would find a download link.
This game is something I would play for hours every day.
That sounds cool! Can I steal your idea for my new game? 😉
Ever heard of AVGM? It's a clicker game which explains the features of abusive video-game manipulation, and most of which (rewards, impacts) clash with those of this video
Isn't that part of impact? Though still a very decent idea, like the game Upgrade Complete! and its sequels
We have turned a button into a
*major gambling game*
that's what happens if you have too much fun, gambling or competitive.... imagine if this game presented in the video was a competitive... oh wait, it exists already, it's called Osu!
online poker comes down to 3 buttons and a slider essentially
@@MapleXD2000 You stretched the thing too much: If you are going to make a poker game, you have to do more than 3 buttons.
-Random generator for flipping the card on the table and among players
-Counter of best hand among players
-Split of the money between who played in that round
-Something that keeps track of blinds and a timer,
-Animations
-Sounds effects
You picked a game where you have to think, in the example of the video, you don't have to
@InnerEagle poker needs more then 3 buttons? No shit sherlock! Obviously there is going to be more mechanics underneath... just like there are underlaying mechanics in the game in the video.
Your argument makes no sense tho because we're commenting under a video of a game that tries to be fun with only 1 button. In this context it makes totally sense to mention poker which, as i said, is fun with only 3 1/2 buttons.
Also you're saying that in the game in the video you don't have to think, which makes me wonder if you even watched the video.... how are you going to time the button press perfectly without thinking about it?
@@MapleXD2000 In this video, the main goal is to make it entertaining the button, right? In an online poker game, the main role of those buttons doesn't create the excitement, also yes, I watched it, more than once to learn something BUT the fact is, I have a better example than what you said, you probably know it, it's called "Videopoker", that's mainly focused on touching buttons.

Cookie clicker in a nutshell
And just like that, while trying to condense fun into it's purest from, he created a clicker game.
Not exactly , because there is one crucial ingredient missing for a good clicker game.
Driving curiosity.
You try the game , you get few points, you kill ennemies and ge tmore points, you level up, you do that for a while...and now?
What's the difference between being lvl 1 and 50?
If nothing change, you'll quickly gave up because you realize the game is entirely pointless.
A perfect exemple of a very basic clicker game who doesn't that is "my name is mayo" you just click on a mayo pot, but you get funny punchline, new background, new cosmetic, ect...and this alone is enought to let the player and driving the player for wanting more.
And more developped clicker games live with the promise if you persist, you'll be reward with unknow new uppgrades, new mechanism, new ressources ect...

I've spent days playing simple games with no aesthetics and no theme simply because the gameplay is rewarding and full of meaningful and interesting decisions. To me that's much more important with good game design.

This exercise should be given to every aspiring game designer: You have one button, make it fun.
A little late now, but I wanted to say that this is a great video! You explain an important aspect of video game development without losing focus from the main point. However, I do feel like I was a little duped. From the title, I imagined you would be making a game where your only purpose is to press the button, but with the level bar and the enemies the purpose stops being "press the button" and becomes "kill enemies and level up".
I must change my glasses because I thought this was a Tom Scott video xd
although I really liked your content, so new sub :P
Another fun button to press would be hitting that like button.
Just don’t hit it an even number of times.
I don’t think the bubbles where fun because it was permanent and irreversible affect, I think it was fun because you affected the environment around you
I just released my first fully-completed game, and this video was realyl helpful in figuring out how to add game juice! It's a very short game, but it's surprisingly fun thanks to all the tips in this video - thanks, Jonas!
very nice video. i knew these concepts but seeing this in action like that is very refreshing and helped me to consider that kind of things harder in my game, instead of thinking the fun will come by itself.

yo this game looks actually fun, how can I play it?

My boring game before I applied all Tips from Jonas' Videos:
1. You are a green square, shooting red squares, on a gray map, with the squares just moving towards you
2. You get 5 points for every red square you kill
3. You can shoot and throw grenades without any limitations
4. Red squares chase you forever, allowing you to build up a crowd of them and kill them for many points
5. Your health regenerates very quickly
The same game after I applied Jonas' Tips:
1. The color scheme each time is randomized, making things more varied. There are tween animations for squares moving, and particle & trail effects for hitting an enemy/shooting a bullet
2. You get points based on a combo system which is EXPONENTIAL - you can kill a few enemies and get like 10 points, or you can kill over 100 in a row and get OVER A MILLION
3. Shooting slows you down, throwing grenades decreases your health by 10, which means you have to be careful with what you do
4. The enemy squares are either in a chasing or fleeing state, which means you can't always get a large crowd of them to kill for a large combo (because half of them will run away)
5. Your health regenerates much slower, but your combo, when it runs out, can be used as healing, which forces you to choose between surviving or risking it and gathering a large combo
6. The bullets you shoot bounce around the level bounds, which means you can kill enemies outside of your view, but you can end up killing yourself!
Jonas knows his stuff!
Woah this is pretty cool
From what I've personally found (this is the short version), success is what drives fun in many cases, which is why challenge is so important. If the player doesn't succeed in _anything_, there's no point in playing, but if they can't succeed, there's also no point in playing. This is different from not having a goal though, bc players can make their own goals and make it fun again
