Very compelling arguements! I really thought similarly! I mean, Death is a fantastic character, but despite how threating he is and how much struggle he gave Puss, he genuienly more an antagonist than a villian.
And yes, he did have questionable motives such as taking Puss' last life early or "playing with his food", as he rants in spanish in the final fight - I feel like those make him a really complex antagonist to discuss. In the end, villian or not, he's one spectacular Dreamworks character!

Nicely said!!, dreamworks have really set the bars up with the character Death. He was well thought out. Thank you Mate!

    Good analysis!
I'm an epic fantasy writer, so I definitely have some thoughts. Death is an amazing contrast to Puss, and that's what makes their conflict so captivating. His strengths emphasize Puss's weaknesses. He's also the kind of person who sees the bigger picture and can't help fixing problems when he sees them in people, so he really does fit the mentor role. He's pressing Puss so hard because he wants Puss to do better. And... if the end result is a dead cat, it wasn't worth the effort of fixing, anyway.
In my writing, I happen to have a character like this. The main difference between her and Death is that, to certain characters, she really is a villain. She helped another very ambitious villain manipulate a country into falling apart just because she found it fun. Her outlook on that, though, is that, if the heroes didn't want their government to fall apart so easily, they should've done better to prevent it. Like Death, she finds herself teaching the heroes lessons, though she's an incredibly harsh teacher.
These kinds of characters are so interesting, and I'm glad Dreamworks made an antagonist that I can relate to so well. Also, interesting thoughts in the video. Thanks for posting it.

Thanks Pal. I was captivated by the Death and seeing more people bashing into him being just a villain. Great work writing your story mate💯, I'm a learning writer too.

Your character though, is more or less giving herself an out to make what she had done feel like a teaching moment. That's basically "do as I say, not as I do". This could make her more of a Villain; in that, she has done something very bad. And will not admit to her mistakes, she would rather make the heroes feel the guilt she has. She decided pride was more useful than honor.
Not to say she's not an antagonist, there is just more to unpack and understand. Hopefully you could use this as like a twisting point where both parties realize what's going on and eventually dig deeper into character arks. Perhaps the heroes could use it against her as a mechanism to concede.

Death is not a villain nor hero he just showed up to kill Puss for not valuing his 8 lives and for "laughing in the face of death". He thought what was the point of letting him have this final life when he was going to waste it. So he was going to do him and Puss a favour and take his last one

Death's role is actually makes me remember a lot to Jake's role in Rango. The 'end result of thier influence' is different, but honestly, they still do have a really similar concept and place in the story.

It's literally shown in the film that he was trying to kill Puss before his time, out of spite.
The "just doing his job" thing that ya'll are so confidently wrong about is literally disproven throughout his dialogue scenes.

Villain: “(in a film, novel, or play) a character whose evil actions or motives are important to the plot”
Antagonist: “a person who actively opposes or is hostile to someone or something; an adversary”
by definition, Death qualifies for both. he opposes Puss for not valuing his lives and for mocking him with his quote, “Puss in Boots laughs in the face of Death”. on top of that, his evil actions/motive plays a huge role in this movie as he’s the reason why Puss went to find the wishing star

one of Puss’s past lives shouted, “that’s cheating!”. Death came to kill Puss out of sheer pettiness when it wasn’t even Puss’s time to go yet. I’d say that’s an evil motive, thus qualifying for a villain

Death is not evil. Death is actually completely neutral in nature. And no matter what, death comes to us all

Death can also be your friend. You just need to be a good person and value life. If you die for others he defintely is your friend.

Death is just a force of nature in real life, but in this movie he's a complex and multilayered entity with his own personality and beliefs.
This is why I don't think Death being a force of nature discounts him from being a villain.

The thing I majorly disagree with most people is that the wolf is simply doing his job, despite it being very clear that Death's job is to deal with the dead. Puss was still alive, breathing and well, which means Death was willing to break the laws of nature to take Puss's last life for not treasuring his others.
