The rabbi confused me with his logic. He says the way to read the old testament is to look at the stuff proven to be wrong as symbolic but the stuff yet to be proven wrong as literal. It should be symbolic until proven literal right?
It’s that the Torah has room to be interpreted in more non-literal manners *if* and only *if* significant scientific evidence says otherwise. This idea itself is even controversial and it’s very nuanced and a case by case thing.

A plain reading of the text makes it literal and a perusing of rabbinic sources would should you that most (some don’t) take it literally. The reason you should take it literally until given reason not to is because the text is given as literal with the caveat that if philosophical truths or scientific proofs contradict it, it can be reinterpreted in light of them. This idea is controversially expressed by Maimonides when he’s talking about whether the universe is eternal or not. This makes much sense if you think about it, and what you’re saying doesn’t make any sense. Just because certain things (this principle is pretty much just applied to Genesis) can be reinterpreted based on contradictory proof doesn’t mean that you can just assume it’s 𝐚𝐥𝐥 non-literal. The text is given as literal. Now I don’t actually hold of this idea, but I do disagree that it should be the opposite, like you said. Especially when the 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞 is only formulated this way.

I think both sides realise they may learn something from the other, and both sides have the humility to respect someone with different views. That’s actually quite hard to do, as it requires, intelligence, maturity, and humility. No one has the right to change another’s mind, that is just arrogance. It’s up to each individual to search for the truth, and these two men can help a wide range of people to do that.
This particular Rabbi is a master of deflection, goalpost moving, false analogies, burden-shifting, circular reasoning and unsubstantiated assertions. I didn’t hear him make a single argument - and I’m being generous in using that word - that couldn’t be easily debunked. Thus his relentless condescension, frequent interruptions and impugning of motive. The muddier the field, the more difficult it is to evaluate what’s happening.

As a person born of Jewish parents raised in a conflicted Jewish environment, my grasp of Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris has changed dramatically my sense of freedom. My childhood experiences with the mannerisms of rabbinical leaders such as Rabbi Sacks, their stories and persuasive descriptions, always turned me off as people filled with their own righteousness, guaranteed by their ego and gods approval.
My experience is that there are no more egotistical and abusive people than Atheists. Atheists killed over 100 Million people in the 20th century alone with their "we know how to rule over people and religion is poison claims". The freedoms Americans have came from Christian ministers using the teachings of Jesus the Jew. There are no more generous people than Jews and certain Christian organizations like the Mormons. I met a man in wheelchair ramdomly yesterday and he told me he suffers from post traumatic syndrome due to been a victim of abuse by catholic priest when he was a young boy. The court case is still ongoing.

One thing that I do not understand that Rabbi sacks referred to. He said that Adam and Eve were a parable and not actual people who were the first humans. In studying from a Jewish standpoint I understand that the ancient rabbis believed that the cave where Abraham and the other patriarchs were buried they said one step further into the cave is the gate to Eden and that Adam and Eve are buried in the deeper part of that cave.

If an ex Jew wrote that instead of Dawkins, you wouldn’t have said that. The Rabbi completely ducked the idea of raising children with a religious identity attached to them. The idea that singing the songs, going to the school, being taught the beliefs, etc, doesn't obviously instil the desired religion into the child the vast, vast majority of the time is just wheadling of the most pathetic kind. The rabbi confused me with his logic. He says the way to read the old testament is to look at the stuff proven to be wrong as symbolic but the stuff yet to be proven wrong as literal. It should be symbolic until proven literal right?
It’s that the Torah has room to be interpreted in more non-literal manners *if* and only *if* significant scientific evidence says otherwise. This idea itself is even controversial and it’s very nuanced and a case by case thing.

A plain reading of the text makes it literal and a perusing of rabbinic sources would should you that most (some don’t) take it literally. The reason you should take it literally until given reason not to is because the text is given as literal with the caveat that if philosophical truths or scientific proofs contradict it, it can be reinterpreted in light of them. This idea is controversially expressed by Maimonides when he’s talking about whether the universe is eternal or not. This makes much sense if you think about it, and what you’re saying doesn’t make any sense. Just because certain things (this principle is pretty much just applied to Genesis) can be reinterpreted based on contradictory proof doesn’t mean that you can just assume it’s 𝐚𝐥𝐥 non-literal. The text is given as literal.
Now I don’t actually hold of this idea, but I do disagree that it should be the opposite, like you said. Especially when the 𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞 is only formulated this way.

As a person born of Jewish parents raised in a conflicted Jewish environment, my grasp of Christopher Hitchens, Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris has changed dramatically my sense of freedom. My childhood experiences with the mannerisms of rabbinical leaders such as Rabbi Sacks, their stories and persuasive descriptions, always turned me off as people filled with their own righteousness, guaranteed by their ego and gods approval.
My experience is that there are no more egotistical and abusive people than Atheists. Atheists killed over 100 Million people in the 20th century alone with their "we know how to rule over people and religion is poison claims". The freedoms Americans have came from Christian ministers using the teachings of Jesus the Jew. There are no more generous people than Jews and certain Christian organizations like the Mormons. Tell what Atheist groups have given? Humm death and destruction!

This is why we can only judge people on ACT, and not abstract moral laws. I think his point was, children are taught to judge others as being 'different' through abstract moral beliefs. Children understand truth at sight, they do not require lessons on morality - this is why religion is wrong, because it teaches a moral law, which always results in judging others and condemning those who are 'immoral' in their eyes. Moral good and moral evil are the same thing because because morality itself is the problem.

This video perfectly demonstrates how easily people can be manipulated through vague, false and damaging claims or beliefs. Also it perfectly demonstrates how hard and sometimes dangerous it can be to try to expose such manipulative behaviour, because the offender wraps their nonsensical arguments in powerful sensations like hope and both positive and negative emotion. Questioning or challenging the authority or the authenticity of the offenders claims and beliefs may also be simply rejected by claiming the challenger is some sort of a human hater or evil (talking about blasphemy, or perfectly demonstrated in this video; to be accused of being antisemitic). Not too many decades ago, and likely even today in certain regions of the world, a guy like Hawkins would be murdered for his very legitimate and objective utterances - and a great number of people would concur. It's absolutely insane, and horrendous.
Personal belief in something greater seems a part of human nature to me, but that is completely different to the autoritarian or even totalitarian mass delusion that religion is.

The movement responsible for bringing the modern state of Israel into existence was secular (as were the bulk of the people who built and ran the state). Many of the founding fathers identified themselves as atheists: Theodore Herzl, Ben Gurion, Chaim Weizmann, Golda Meir, Moshe Dayan. Even Ze'ev Jabotinsky, the ideological predecessor of the Likud, was an agnostic. As was Ariel Sharon, Yitzhak Rabin, etc.
In other words, Israel's actions say as much about Judaism as the Khmer Rouge's about Buddhism or modern Cuba about Catholicism.
