Michigan fan here..... Woody Hayes is a legend and was good man- fans should acknowledge greatness and put aside petty hatreds. Its a game. Woody Hayes was a great coach.
I was raised in a 'Michigan family' and my dad has a theory. All of Woody's sideline tirades were right after one of his own players made a bonehead mistake. Woody was merely trying to make sure the TV news and headlines were about HIM, and not the player. So said player could mentally regroup and not be turned into the next Scott Norwood or Bill Buckner.
I didn't hate Woody in my playing days and I don't hate him now. I was up close and personal with him on many occasions. I even visited with him in his office when I was a pro scout. My opinion doesn't change, he was interesting, an original and I think his players liked him but my opinion through many years was that he was a borderline nut job!
I was blessed growing up in Columbus in the 1970s. I had several occasions meeting Coach Hayes as kid. My Dad would take me to autograph signings with many of the Buckeyes at Agler Davidson sporting goods. I then later met Coach Hayes with Bob Hope at a function when my cousins band played for them. And finally in 1986 as a student at OSU in ROTC. He had an office there and I remember him opening up the doors each morning while he had his coffee. It was his last year. He was a God in Columbus and in the State of Ohio. Those were the best days of my life. God bless Woody!
Big Nebraska fan here - over 60 years! I always thought Woody was one of the best fundamentals coach in college football. I would have loved to have taken a history class from him. Rex Kern was always my favorite player - college or pro.
@@patricchambers923 Woody cared more about people and less about money than any man I've ever met. Every time he screwed up, he did it on national TV. Few people knew how much charity work he did.
Old man lifelong Michigan fan here. Woody Hayes scared me a little when i was a boy. I thought that he was virtually satan. But as i aged, i came to see that he was a great man. An embodiment of noble values today in short supply. And yes, a humanitarian. May he RIP. Salute to Buckeye Nation. ....probly' the only complimenrary things i'll ever say about anything related to OSU....
I played at Michigan, for Bo Schembechler in the late sixties. I was up close and personal with Coach Hayes, listened to him and observed him. In my opinion he was "nuts"!
If you played football for a coach like Woody above the pee wee level you carry his philosophy off the field with you for life. Thats what makes this sport unlike any. Im 63 my high school coach was a old school discipline type. He would grab you by the face mask if needed then after he made the correction come up and say nice job hoss! We would get lectures on history and comments on people to avoid in life etc. Woody hung around too long imo. He burned out on the field and in some way the school firing him was a blessing. His loyalty to OSU remained and what happened in the end was just like him chewing a player in practice in August. RIP coach you impacted so many lives in a great way.
He was a patriot who loved America. That didn't do him any favors with the liberal administration. They were LOOKING for a reason to fire him. They could have given him one last retirement season. Had he been 9-0-1 at that '78 Gator Bowl, there would have been nothing to talk about.
At the time of this viewing, there are two dislikes of this video. Obvious scumbag ichigan fans! Woody Hayes happens to be the father of THEE greatest football program on the planet today which means Coach Hayes is responsible for the popularity of college football today. Coach Hayes is so needed in these times that if he were here, the nonsense in this country concerning the division of races would be nonexistent! Coach Hayes will ALWAYS be loved in Ohio.
I went to High School with Archie. I then went to Miami University in the mid 70's. So you probably know Archie Aldridge. He was one of our Basketball stars from Middletown.
@@INJURYCOMP I was 9 years old in 1977 so too young for that group. Nothing beat the cut off shirts on RBs in the 1970s. How cool was that. .I met one of Archie's brothers' in law at the Hilton in Shanghai over breakfast. He was a pilot for Fed Ex.
I’m from Hamilton and went to Miami in the early 70’s. I remember Archie Aldridge of course. I also watched Butch Carter play for Middletown and Kevin Grevey play for Hamilton Taft. They went on to star at Indiana and Kentucky and each had successful NBA careers.
Me too! Archie was my childhood hero, had a poster of Archie Griffin, and Woody Hayes on my bedroom door for so many years that they started to fall apart! I grew up in Portland, Maine, but my dad was from Lancaster, Ohio, he was the man who got me hooked on the greatest college football program in the history of the game! Many years later, working for the Marriott River center hotel in San Antonio, Texas, I got an unexpected opportunity to meet Archie who was speaking at the convention center, when I was a bellman at the hotel! I was so excited to meet him after all those years that I had admired him as my idol, that while walking him to his room wanted to tell him so much about my admiration for him, and that my cousins grew up a block away from the Griffin household when Archie was a child, long before he became the only two time Heisman winner! I
like Gen. Patton slapping 2 soldiers ..... it happens , we're human and have faults . I feel sorry for you if you can't see through Woody's temper tantrums and see the whole person , who spent his life being kind ,decent, and giving ..... didn't you listen to his former players and coaches ..... they loved him , despite his faults ......
What is Woody really remembered for… hitting a player from another team because he was pissed they intercepted the ball. He did what no coach should have ever done. They can say all they want about Woody Hayes and Ohio State fans are the only ones who are stupid enough to believe it but for everyone else we only remember what a sorry ass he was.
With all due respect (which, to you, is almost nil), if I had been in Woody's position that dreadful night at Jacksonville , I would have grabbed, not Bauman's neck, but Schlichter's neck, not only for attempting that pass, but also because that pass was proof conclusive of his dealings with bookmakers. Coach Hayes used to say that three things happen when you throw the football and two are bad. That night, we learned, to devastating effect, that, actually, four things happen when you throw the football and three are bad. That third thing? A good and decent man gets fired. I wouldn't wish living in Jacksonville on my worst enemy, but, quite frankly, in your case, I'm willing to make an exception. Perhaps then you might just learn to be respectful toward others with whom you disagree.
@@thomash.schwed3662 With all due respect (which, to you is not almost nil, it does not exist). That dreadful night, proof conclusive, devastating effect. Nice writing. But your wrong. There is not a third bad thing that could happen when you throw the ball. What you said is the poorest excuse I have ever heard or read about what Hayes did. Hayes is responsible for his ‘own’ actions and he got himself fired. No one else is responsible, only Hayes himself.

Woody, Bobby Knight, and Bear Bryant are 3 of my main influences in life. Woody was awesome.

I am proud to say that I knew Woody fairly well. He was a wonderful man, and I loved him like a favorite uncle.
He was tough but fair and had a heart of gold.
Except for when he punches players right?
Love Woody

Art Schlister was the QB. I always wondered if the interception was thrown to settle a gambling debt.
