Woody Hayes was a wonderful human being. He was like a favorite uncle to me and I loved him dearly, warts and all. Occasionally I visit his gravesite at the Union cemetery just north of the OSU campus. It invariably looks like an OSU gift shop. Rest in Peace, Woody.
You’ve made this mistake 15 times this fall. Now you get WITH IT, goddamn it I’m tired of it. You lose us a ball game and by god I’ll throw you off the squad.
Supposedly Woody Hayes’s salary in 1978 was $42,000 per year. Good for 1978 compared to other occupations but not close to the millions of dollars D-1 coaches make today.
Mostly he would not recognize modern college football, he was old school ! Three yards and a cloud of dust ! My late father use to say the young may die, but the old must die ! When I ask him what he meant by this he would reply if George Washington's generation was still alive there would be no progress. By their stature and position in society they would stop progress ! We would still be riding in the horse and buggy !
Woody was an ass. I have been a fan of the Scarlet and Grey for 55 years now! And every year we waited for Woody to punch out another photographer. And he had a rep for hitting his players. I truly expected that one of those big kids that he recruited was going to hit him back one day and stop his ticker on the field. When I saw him step over the sideline and hit that Clemson player, I leaped out of my chair and shouted,"That's it Woody. You're out of there for good!" And he was. I've heard what a good guy he could be in the right circumstances, and I'm sure those stories are true. But as far as the way he treated his players, or anyone he disliked all I can say is he won a lot of football games.
Different Times. Different Beliefs. I can remember when playing little league football, we weren't allowed to drink water during practice---- it would make us soft. There are still some beliefs that need to go (see Northwestern hazing scandal).
@@ajblum58 Oh yeah, when I played HS football in the '60's in Indiana, if you wanted a drink during practice you were a pussy, go take a salt tablet and run 10 laps! It really is unbelievable how uneducated coaches were in those days and very surprising more players didn't go down due to heat exhaustion.

The real Matt Foley, motivational speaker.
Woody has to be rolling over in his grave with what has become of our culture nowadays with soyboys, snowflakes and political correctness.
