I was checking to see if you had a video of US220 North through Roanoke and I found this video. It’s really magical at night with the Mill Mountain Star lit up. Also 220 is a roller coaster of a ride from the NC line to Roanoke.
I've seen this on maps, but never really thought anything of, nor did it ever register in my head to even consider recording it. That's actually a pretty neat (and nicely constructed) freeway. I'm a bit surprised at the amount of traffic on it, during the first few miles. Did you record it during rush hour?
That's what plan is anyway. My understanding is that from Martinsville to Roanoke the existing US-220 was not deemed safe enough for interstate usage so a new road will be built that runs parallel to that and then link up to the existing I-581 in Roanoke. But these are all just plans at this point and as far I can't tell the Virginia DOT hasn't announced any construction plans yet.
@bsdpowa Speed limit gets knocked down a bit if you get into commercial area. When you have an at-grade intersection like that, unless there is a sign that says no U-turn, it's perfectly legal. You do have to exercise great caution when you do it though, which I think I did in the video. You're right, it is somewhat dangerous if you cut it too close to oncoming traffic. But I had plenty of room to maneuver my way into the northbound lane.
@bsdpowa Oh you mean the part where I turn around to back north? In the US it's not all that uncommon for an expressway/freeway to transition into an at-grade 4-lane highway like that. When it makes that transition it's considered the "end" of the freeway - even though the highway does continue.
@Freewayjim Thanks.... Roanoke's skyline looks much more impressive in picture than it does in person. But it does have a nice downtown area... as you'll see in the next video. It's an impressive highway considering when it was built but it could use some improvements here and there. Perhaps maybe those will come when I-73 ever gets up and running.
@FreewayBrent The only place I saw a backup was traffic merging from I-581 onto I-81 North. This was about 6:30-7:00 in the evening. Roanoke is a rather laid-back city. But I thought it was pretty nice overall. I bet the cost of living there is dirt cheap.
I've never seen/driven this road before, obviously this is the next best thing, thanks for the ride, nice work!

Everytime I drive through Roanoke I got this song stuck in my head.
I never realized I-581 is supposed to be part of I-73 in the future.

@Bryant5493 Thanks... did you notice that HUGE speed limit sign at :16? I don't think I've ever seen a speed limit sign that large before.

@FreewayTitan Thanks! I have a downtown Roanoke street tour coming up next.
