PFF is 100% wrong for asserting that a defender needs to be "blamed" for every reception. "We have to assign it to someone" Why? are you not capable of typing the coaches name or the defensive coordinator's name? Maybe don't build your entire stat tracking system around the idea that people are responsible for things that you know they aren't actually responsible for. This is the most interesting video I've seen in a long time. First half of the video I felt like HAHA FUCK YOU PFF... but then you gave PFF's perspective (and the grades response) and I put my pitchfork away. You could have easy slammed one side or the other just to make an overly sensationalist video, but you didn't. You kept it right where it should be. In the gray area. Stats are just stats. There are so many variables that go into this shit. Lastly, I'd like to point out how, as always, you explain things to where EVERYONE can understand. Even people who don't know shit about X's and O's. The ability to do that is a gift in itself. Not only do you explain WHAT happened, which is what most people seem to do in these breakdowns, but you also explain WHY it happened. The WHY is huge in fully understanding anything, really, so I thought I'd point it out. Other content providers overlook that. Another great video from you.
This video is awesome. Really helps clear up how Pff works to the casual fan and even NFL players who think they're being wronged 😂. Glad you were able to evacuate your home safely!
17:20 no if pff said “he gave up 16 passes” but meant “he was closest player to 16 passes caught” then they were wrong when they said “gave up 16 passes” and it’s wrong to discredit that man like that.
I think this kind of video is good to clarify the kind of job that PFF does. Only thing I disagree is the "nobody is wrong" phrase. On this topic, Brett was wrong when he used this PFF's statistic to compare Baker and Matthieu. Those PFF allowed catch numbers are not supposed to compare player performance.
As someone with a little inside knowledge, there are some things that PFF grades and stats are amazing for and some things where they are a little less intuitive. The adversarial grades (wr/db in man, ol/dl pass pro, running grade, defender making 'stops') can be excellent and enlightening. Things get a little more squishy when it comes to zone coverages, run defense when you don't make a stop. They are still informative but maybe not indicative of what you might think. What I would say is, if PFF data isn't beneficial, teams wouldn't buy it. So there is definitely value. The grades may not be perfect, but they offer insight over box score stats, and they are given out by people who are knowledgeable about the game of football, like you.

Cheers PS: I watched this video with my cat on my lap feeling like the spiderman meme
wow, I live right in that same city but wasn't close to the side where the fire happened. we had to house a few of our family members and friends who were evacuated from that OC neighborhood, hope you and your loved ones are safe!
Love the shirt. Wasp: Any down and distance, doesn't matter. It sounds like the takeaway from this analysis is that raw "catches" isn't a very good way to compare defensive players. The grades seem to have the proper rigor going into determining whether a guy completed his assignment or not, or even went above his assignment. The "catch" metric has too much random attribution to it.
Pff’s explanation seems like horse shit to me. If they can acknowledge that a defender had no other option well enough to not grade him, then they can just not count that stat as giving up a catch. The fact that they are aware of these plays and have a Mantra that says “we have to attribute this stat to him” is worse than them just being wrong. They are actively just saying “we know it’s not this players fault but we will still give him a negative stat” is crazy. Pff has already made up stats like big time throws and turn over worthy play so why not just invent a stat that shows a play was designed where nobody is to blame on the defense. Why do they have this belief that every catch has to be a defenders fault?
9:20 check out Devontae Booker just falling on his ass in order to block a blitzing linebacker lol. It worked though! Frankly the play would never have worked without that stroke of utter genius
Man that picture of someone "super high up at PFF" does not inspire confidence in their ability to grade football. Dude looks like he got snapped in half playing football in 6th grade and never played again
Do you have a Steelers defense episode on the way? Mainly the pass rush and the trio of Tuitt, Watt and Dupree. Curious to see how it’s all come together for them this season.
GREAT analysis. This is what people need to bring when they disagree with "advanced stats" (as opposed to saying they're trash b/c they don't like the outcome. It'd be like saying "climate change isn't real, cuz... nuh uh!"). I'm a huge stat-head, but honestly I'd be okay if they didn't assign numerical blame if there wasn't any (just note that totals on a team's defense wouldn't match the offensive production, etc). That, or go further & have splits/categories for catches/yards/etc, like you did.
PFF stats are good, the only problem is when people start making judgements about players without realizing how the stats are made or what they mean. Not talking about Brett here, just people in general
Exactly. If someone sees that someone “gave up” 30 catches but all the catches were for -1 yards, they’re only going to see 30. Such as tyrann. It’s just athlete ego
@@archiveacc3248 exactly. PFF even themselves say their stats aren’t 100% accurate, but they’re mostly accurate and that’s waayyyyy more than you get from just looking at a box score. Everything needs context and they say this all the time so idk why people still give them hell about it.
@@HaxStudio that’s why context and the eye test is always needed and they say this. The grading system is what it is and hits more than it misses. If the algorithm spits out a number that’s just what the number is, they aren’t going to take away or add just because.

I'm lovin your content! It kind of brings me to another "understanding" level of the game. In Germany it isn't that easy to find some NFL analysis Stuff, so thank you, Brett!
Ps. If you'll create any Buccaneers Hoodie, there'll be at least one buyer :-)
Pps. Would love to see an analysis of David/White - sometimes it feels kind of they're born to play together.. :-)
Very insightful video 👏🏼. Love your content Brett! Btw your cat FATTY made this episode that much more enjoyable 😂
man what a tune
Wildfire next to the house grabs essential things nope not family pictures not even his wife grabs the essential drinks instead that is a man of culture
We're going to need the cat in every film room from now on Brett.
Love this video! Do more defenders, please! Something I thought it was missing: you said both Mathieu and PFF were right, but what about you? Were you right on the comparison between Baker and Mathieu in terms of "legit catches" and the others? Maybe this could be on the Baker video... Love the content! Cheers
PS: I watched this video with my cat on my lap feeling like the spiderman meme
I can't tell you how refreshing it is to take a break from the world to come here and listen and learn about the game.
wow, I live right in that same city but wasn't close to the side where the fire happened. we had to house a few of our family members and friends who were evacuated from that OC neighborhood, hope you and your loved ones are safe!
My friend Ely Caufield is a firefighter in Missouri. I respect the hell out of him for it. Hes a great guy and a great friend
Man that picture of someone "super high up at PFF" does not inspire confidence in their ability to grade football. Dude looks like he got snapped in half playing football in 6th grade and never played again
Youre judging his analytical intelligence on his appearance?
You should make merch for the Malcom butler interception
Just when I was starting to feel good about myself, I discover yet another page that is blowing me out the water! Lol Dope content though!
@@ybaccount7549 it's like all statistics. Powerful but useless if you don't have any context behind it
@@archiveacc3248 exactly. PFF even themselves say their stats aren’t 100% accurate, but they’re mostly accurate and that’s waayyyyy more than you get from just looking at a box score. Everything needs context and they say this all the time so idk why people still give them hell about it.
Some of their stats, even with context, seem like garbage. Being able to rank Brady over Mahomes this year is laughable.
@@HaxStudio that’s why context and the eye test is always needed and they say this. The grading system is what it is and hits more than it misses. If the algorithm spits out a number that’s just what the number is, they aren’t going to take away or add just because.
