    This is my most popular video by far, and most of my subscribers have come from here so I just wanted to give a quick thanks. I released this video 2 months ago at 12 subscribers and now the channel has 1000 which is absolutely mind blowing. I look back on this video and all I can really see is ways I could've made it better (which I do for a lot of my videos) but I like to think that means my knowledge and skills with creating videos is always improving. I'll aim to do my best with continuing to grow the channel. Thanks again for everything!

      Had my SD for a couple of weeks, and endured a whole lot of videos covering the same "isn't it great" stuff I'd already realized.
      I hadn't realized there was a 'better' proton available - which I've now installed and will re-try on the few games that were unexpectedly causing issues.
      If you're looking for new topics "emudeck" is both awesome - and a little unintuitive.
      Also "Heroic Launcher" - I'm sure many PC people have been stacking up free games from epic, but guide is really needed (not sure if it's just me, but current version still makes me change and then change back my proton version in settings, before it works).

    • @the_new_challenger

      @@goldcd Emudeck was definitely something I was looking to cover, though that topic has been covered in depth by UA-camrs much more skilled than myself. I'd have to find my own unique way to talk about it if I want to add any value to that topic. Heroic is worth looking into. I've only played a few games on it myself and have also encountered some issues. If I could do some research and figure out some fixes then it'd be great to make a video on. I'll keep those ideas in mind whenever I want to put out another video on the Deck.

    A tip I got from a friend of mine who works in phone sales and regularly has to put on and replace screen protectors. If you take the device into the bathroom the next time you shower, the steam from the shower'll have pulled much more of the dust out of the air. It's important to take it with you ahead of time though, as opening the door will kick up a lot of said dust and defeat the purpose. additionally, don't do it if your device is cold, or there'll be a lot of condensation and it'll just interfere with the adhesive of the screen protector. Not 100% foolproof, but it has done wonders for keeping dust out from under my screen protectors.

  • @Nexxus088

    Something to keep an eye on, apparently a company is working on Hall-effect analog sticks for the deck with the built in capacitive touch too. In theory these sticks will never get drift issues due to how they work and because of that you can tune out all of the deadzone on the analog sticks as well giving you more fine control.

    • @KJMcLaws
      @KJMcLaws 2 роки тому +1

      I ordered some from gulikit for like $30. I haven't put them in yet because the analog sticks that come with the deck work fine. When they start to drift I have a backup right away. You also have to solder a single wire for each side if you want to keep capacitive touch sticks.

    The Sandisk Extremes and Ultras usualy have the same read performance.

    @seanc6754 2 роки тому +3

    the Steam Deck adopts UHS-I, which tops out at around 100MB/s read speeds and 90MB/s write speeds. You'll be able to use the faster UHS-II standard because it's backwards compatible, but you won't get the higher rated read and write speeds. SO DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON EXTREME SPEED SD CARDS BC IT DOESNT MAKE A BIT IF DIFFERENCE AFTER THE DECKS SD CARD READER

    For anyone looking at this video in 2023, the NVMe drive in the steam deck is now much more available. A 1TB drive is now about $20 more than a 1TB SD card on Amazon, and Valve won't void your warranty if you replace it (so long as you don't break anything while you're in there).
    Honestly, creating and flashing the new image is substantially more difficult for a newbie than actually installing the drive.

    For the microsd hotswap problem.. just unmount the sd first from desktop mode, and swap it.
    It's the "Safely Remove" equivalent on Linux.

    • @the_new_challenger
      @the_new_challenger  2 роки тому +2

      A completely valid option. But at that point you might as well shutdown the system to swap the sd rather than switch to desktop, unmount, then switch to game mode. Either way works but I've since heard it's not great to swap the micro sd too often as it could damage the spring.

    The info you gave on the sd card differences is incorrect, the main difference from ultra to extreme is the A1 and A2 classification.
    A1 means the card can only perform one operation at a time either reading OR writing.
    While the A2 means you can read and write simultaneously which is almost necessary to have a smooth experience in some games on the deck.

      There's a few ways to ground yourself. Stand barefoot on a hard surface like wood, touch some unpainted metal, get an anti-static mat, or wear an anti-static wristband (yes it should contact your skin and they usually ground to a plug or some metal)

    If you want a room with no dust, goto your bathroom and run the shower on hot water. Close the window and vent. Wait till water is condensing on the walls. Take a small/ medium hand towel and start waving it around the air to circulate the air. Then wait. Dont open the window or turn on the vent. When the air has lost most humidity, get your device and the screen protector or the sticker/housing skin, and apply it after following directions on packaging to clean the surface. Any dust should have fallen to the floor or attached itself to a wall, within a drop of water!

    This is the first time i see a video of someone explain counter clockwise rotating the screw to get it into the thread so you do not damage it.
    This is something you should do with any device with plastic that you value.

    just so yall know tho, Its not like the SD card will be bricked if you corrupt it. You'll just have to reformat and redownload your games on said SD. For me thats good enough to at least try hot swapping to see if the corruption is something worth dealing with.

    The SD slot will not support faster cards, also should be easy enough to enable swapping sd cards with the power on by unmounting the drive.

    Just an FYI, you can also boot SteamOS from a Micro SD card as well. I did it

    Does the 'Dockteck' dongle you have deliver a picture over HDMI? I'm asking because I have the same one and couldn't get it to work on monitor or TV,.. Thanks and great video :)

      It does. Usually the deck has to be off or in sleep mode before plugging it into the dongle, then when I turn the Steam Deck on it will display out. For some odd reason I find that if the Deck isn't at least in sleep mode then plugging it in won't do anything.

      @@the_new_challenger Odd... with my monitor (M27Q which can itself act as a dock) it's best to plug it in when the Deck is up and in Desktop Mode already... thanks for the fast reply I will try it out.

    Great Video! @1:50 What driving game is this? I see it as part of many of the video reviews of the Steam Deck.
    Also, you don't have to power off your Steam Deck even if you are paranoid about SD card swapping corruption...you can exit to desktop mode and EJECT the card as well, just as you would normally do on a PC. (and should be doing on a PC)
    Also one of the developers, recommended NOT upgrading the SSD, as many of the 3rd party drives run with too much power, thus shortening the life of your Deck. (according to him) - Just a FYI.

      That's Horizon Chase Turbo! I've been asked that question a few times actually.
      It's true that you could just switch over to desktop and eject but is it that much faster than powering down and back on? Cause you have to switch to desktop mode, eject, then switch back to game mode regardless.
      And are you referring to this tweet by Lawrence Yang? mobile.twitter.com/lawrenceyang/status/1540809830000013313?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1540809830000013313%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fd-41544221081136716747.ampproject.net%2F2206101637000%2Fframe.html
      That was referring to ssd's in the 2242 m.2 form factor, not the 2230. Unless your talking about something else in which case forget I said anything on this last point.
