The idea of her being a goat at some point still holds water when you look at the quotes from Sammy and Pipton, as well as Wurts for the Gorge. Sammy shows signs of losing memories about who he or Mumsy are, and Pipton brings this up as well. Maybe Wurt lost her memories from being transformed, just like Sammy. Wurt also mentions in her quotes for the dilapidated cathedral that “Mermfolk have story passed down… about mouth in the sky…” so the merms do actually remember the Gnaw, reinforcing the idea that they came from the Gorge. And for no other younger merms, it does say in the Compedium that she is the youngest of them, so maybe she’s just the first new one to show up in a long time.
@ I always interpreted it as her turning into a Merm, since I doubt the transformation feeling anything besides strange. Plus I haven’t seen anything depicting the opposite occurring.
@@AndrewPemberton-s8u The description of her Victorian says “Wurt can't imagine a fate more terrible than having to trade her sensible scales for unruly fur.”

As a Wurt main, I think she was a Merm since she looks much younger and was just following other Merms until she discovered a new form of having fun. My favorite version of her is the Angler Fish (Lantern Fish). If the survivors were able to get out of the Constant I think Wickerbottom would try to take Wurt with her.
Wurt has this one reaction that I’m unsure how to make of it. It’s an ornament from a Christmas event, and one of these ornaments is in the shape of a goat person, I think specifically Mumsy. Wurt has comments about all of the other ornaments but for this one it’s just a simple “…?” It’s a little weird. Her silence speaks volumes. But I’m not sure if it’s supposed to show her hesitation, like it made her pause and wonder why it looked familiar, or if it’s supposed to show her genuine confusion about it. It’s just an ornament of a goat, I don’t see why it would make her ponder so much that she doesn’t even comment on it.
@@laraschroeder5195 The only times I can recall Wurt having a reaction like that is to shocking things, like the bird in a cage being deceased and to the Fish Cordon Bleu (which is made of fish and frog legs, the very things Merms drop upon death) so she may recognize it.
My head canon is that Wurt is the daughter between a merm and a pig. At some point she lost her parents because the constant is a dangerous place, and was left I the care of the merms.
they didn't learn English. They have their own language that sounds like "GLOP GLORP" to non merm survivors. Wurt is the only one who speaks mermfolk, and the king speaks english probably with the help of wurt, who was taught English by Wickerbottom.
@@not_umbre yes, but they know english in the original don't starve game, in which wurt was not a character, meaning they must have learned it from somewhere else
Im pretty sure their is a loading screen with the goat from the gorge, and a baby goat (maybe wurt) and the fact that there is a semi goat skin for wurt (the quote for it is « what happening i feel strange » makes me think she was a goat before transforming into a funny frog child
Don't the mermguards have horns? Like a subspecies that's more adept for combat and higher intelligence, maybe? Also I love the implication that only female merms have horns, the king is protected by a militarized butch force
Some reasons why people think that wurt is a goat is because she has horns but if you go to the Valentine's cinematic you can see that the murm has horns and that murm is a female and wurtt is a female and she has horn BOOM!
Great analysis! This got me thinking of how merms were in the constant even before Maxwell’s reign. Could you make a video on the origins of things in the constant? Like which things Maxwell created, which things Charlie created and which things were already there?
1:40 I'm pretty sure she was just looking at the pictures lol 6:24 About her appearance, the only thing that sticks to me the most is this weird fin around her neck haha though, I like to think young merms are like tadpoles and spend their childhood underwater. (Also, did you know she's got horns because she's confirmed to be a merm guard?) 9:27 I would argue that she's not smarter than the rest, but she's given every opportunity to learn new things AND at an age where you absorb knowledge like a sponge. 15:22 Team merm, for her at least. I support the theory that she is part of the new merm generation rather than the one that transitioned from goat to merm, and human would not make sense since these didn't exist in the constant before Maxwell/Charlie's arrival, as far as I know. Wurt is def one of my favorite characters, maybe because of all these juxtapositions that form her character (ugly yet cute as heck, innocent yet bloodthirsty, smol and young yet capable of making a kingdom from scratch, wild and aggressive yet fond of stories and fairytales and eager to learn new things, etc). Some of my favorite quotes from her are: - Fish-related ones (and the absolute horror when examining dead/cooked ones). - Meat-related ones (raw/cooked/food containing them). - Her trying to pronounce complicated words and then giving up ("It called bye-oh-loomy...loominess...loomin-essence... GLOWY!"- abyssal skin). - Her naivety ("Wear plant on head to learn about plant? Make sense, florp!"
My explanation for why Charlie attacks Wurt is that Charlie only attacks people that have a player controlling them. It's a quasi-meta explanation for sure, and I'll be the first to admit that it's only marginally better than the "it's a core game mechanic" theory. I feel like survivors are special not because they're particularly intelligent, but because they're controlled by us, they have that spark of life in them. They are avatars of a higher being. The big question is why does Charlie attack survivors in the first place. Can she control it, or is she forced to? Does she want survivors to live, or does she want to kill us. Is it to test us to make sure we're able to fight the Fuelweaver? Who knows!

i think wurt is a first gen merm from goat-formed parents, her DNA is mixed and that's why she has hints of horns despite being a full merm. she's more intelligent because of her goat-parents, but was raised in a city/village/settlement? of au naturale merms, hence, dumbasses that didn't let her intellect blossom and taught her to hate pigs, until wickerbottom adopted her (yes it's adoption shut up) and taught her english and skills like tool use and critical thinking. broken english, sure, but how impressive is it for a child whose age isn't even double digits to already be bilingual?
