A blue whale popped up right next to me near Morro Bay about 15 years ago and looked right at me! It was one of the most mesmerizing experience of my life. Just deep knowledge way beyond us.
I captain wildlife whale watch cruises here in alaska and have done so for 25 years. We are seeing more whales than ever before. Humpbacks, Fin, Sei, Grey, and Orcas
Even though they’re endangered, what the news story is failing to mention is that their numbers yes are in the 15-25,000 range, but that their numbers are rising.
Magnificent! Go if able. I was honored a few years ago to see many whales, including one Blue Whale, out on Monterey Bay. She surfaced alongside the boat right next to me and was many boat-lengths long. The Marine biologists excitedly explained how rare blue whales are, saying we were in a small group of humans able to witness these gentle giants. Happy to hear there’s a large pod off the San Diego coast❤️✨🌎
Wow! This makes me so happy. 🎉 I live on Maui overlooking the part of the ocean where numerous humpbacks come to mate and give birth, but 100 breaching in an afternoon? I have never seen that. You guys were blessed.
Magnificent. I know a beach in Monterey that you hardly see any people at. Watched many whales one day when I went with just a few people. I will never share that location. Beautiful sand and a clean beach. It was magical.
My thoughts exactly. And the midnight zone, with all those whale falls back then -- must have been teaming with life! (However, moaning about the cost is a bit rich -- it's not just "being on a boat": you're paying for the fleet to be maintained and for knowledgeable guides. A GOOD tour should be worth it. And if it isn't going to be done responsibly with professionals (who should be paid for their expertise)...it's not worth going on. I can't vouch for this place, but the fact that they're concerned about keeping the whales comfortable is good.)
@@tomtom8786 It's to push back against our sliding scale of what's "normal". We tend to think a "normal" amount of animals is whatever we saw when we were young. When we look further back, to what populations were before humans or other natural disasters decimated populations, we get a better idea of what SHOULD be.
Years ago, I had a trip to Hawaii. I went whale watching and we were lucky enough to see so many even the docent on the boat was surprised. To seen blue whales like that must have been a memory for a lifetime.
So sad these boats are dangerously close and causing so much pollution it’s ridiculous and now they just will allow unlimited amount of people with tours and it will destroy an already endangered ecosystem and endangered species all for greed these tours don’t care about animals just money it’s pure greed

they fret humans - given we almost brought them to extinction. People need to back off - those boats are WAY too close. this isn't allowed in Australia
Plot twist: That guy has been using Google Translate to tell the whales to meet him there to ogle at the puny humans. Right now, somewhere off the coast of San Diego, a whale is giving a lecture on us... "The humans are a mere 1/33 the size of a T-Rex...."

I was in San Diego last year and did a whale watching boat tour. It was a small.....Navy boat(?) There were only six of us. We did not see any whales but did see a huge pod(?) of dolphins swimming with us. I enjoyed it but was super disappointed.

Encounters are great adventures but how many small boats are going out there? These animals are feeding and could quite possibly stress out with all the boat traffic. We have had to stop close encounters here in parts of Oz because of stress and rarity of these great creatures. This is concerning.

That's stunning--I had no idea so many blue whales came together like that. Such an exciting experience!

Technically there is no Mission Bay coast. Mission Beach would be more accurate. Additionally 50 miles from the shore isn't "just off the coast"
