Feuerherz55 Honestly with all of the explosives and rockets they have used, it is scary to think that a lawnmower was one of the most dangerous things that they have ever used.
Ok, that was the most dangerous failure I've ever seen! I doubt ANYBODY saw THAT happening! If that blade had gone towards the observation shelter, I don't think it would have stopped it. I just shudder to think...
I was a super villain (and I'm not) I certainly would have cackled maniacally at that blade tearing hell for leather through the earth itself (if I was a super villain).
I'd be interested to know if, and how much, it was vibrating? I'm thinking that it would take an out of balance situation to break that shaft, although looking at the odd number of holes in each blade, it does look like they made an effort to balance the shaft.
I have to ask a couple of (I think) cogent questions: 1) Was that death mower derived from the execution device used in *Caligula*? 2) If so, was it unconscious? Sometimes we sample without knowing it.
I think this design could of worked and been safe if they did 2 alterations. 1: make the blade smaller. Like lawnmower blades are surprisingly small and able to flex when they hit something solid. This chunk of steal actually flexed upwards into the body of the machine. It might not of happened if it was slightly bent(like a lawnmower blade) and had 1/4 the mass it currently had. The second change would be to install a pin somewhere along the axle or in the gears to prevent a catastrophic break like this. If he had a pin somewhere in the works and this happened the pin would of sheered not the axle and the blade would of either stopped completely or just powered down protecting everyone around you and most importantly the engine of the lawnmower.
Is anyone reminded of the movie "Moving" with Randy Quaid and his mower from hell powered by a 327 cid SBC (Richard Pryor was the main character). The mower would destroy anything and everything remotely intruding on the owner's lawn (Quaid) from neighbors, all while his lawn was the size of a patio.
Like toradrow777 says, this one has to be the MOST DANGEROUS thing they've ever done. That blade looks like it weighs a good 15 lbs. I'm not surprised the shaft broke. Notice the small drilled holes for weight balance. I think what killed it was spinning that much mass up to a crazy 5,000 RPM. The slightest imbalance, and/or for that matter hitting the melons could have set up fatal vibrations, and it catastrophically (and spectacularly) failed. It was entertaining to say the least, especially when seen in real time. (zzzZING!!) The thing was scary enough seen running at 1/100 video speed as it left a trail of wreckage behind it. It's lucky a crew member didn't buy the farm because that thing could've gone in any direction! I'll be sorry to see the series end, I've been watching since they began. It's been interesting to see the progression as the show's budget increased. Probably the 2nd one I've enjoyed almost as much as this one (for nutty/dangerous things) is the snow plow that flipped/flung the row of cars. This one tops it for the sheer insanity however. Im surprised they used such a thin prop-shaft, looks about 25mm. That blade looked about 10mm thick and the size puts it at about 20kg, that shaft should have been about 50mm O/D. Its surprising that the necessary calculations were not done.
+simon hattingh Exactly, huge and heavy blade on a thin shaft with that much kinetic energy in it. Should have been at least 10 cm in diameter. Or maybe if they used 2 smaller diameter blades.
It always was my biggest fear that the blade would break off while I was using the lawn mower. After seeing this video I came to the conclusion that it's far worse than I've ever expected. I guess it's time to hire a gardener! lol
If it's any consolation, a lawn-mower blade is a lot smaller and lighter than this monstrosity. So a rogue blade would lose kinetic energy (that is, slow down) a lot faster and easier, and so probably cause less grievous injuries if it hit you.
