- How to create good music: Theory and Emotion Explained.
In this video, I dive into Leonard B. Meyer’s intriguing perspectives on music and its emotional impact. Meyer, a renowned musicologist and author of the influential book Emotion and Meaning in Music, explored how complexity and expectation affect our engagement with music.
Drawing from Meyer's work, I discuss his ideas about musical tension and release, and how a balance of surprise and familiarity is essential for creating a compelling listening experience.
His perspective resonates with me as both a musician and improviser, though, ironically, analyzing Meyer’s ideas today left me feeling a bit “stuck” creatively! Maybe in the next video, I’ll get back to improvising. Hope you enjoy this insight into the intersection of music theory, emotion, and creativity!
Start creating good music today: meet most of your listeners' expectations, not all of them, and you'll be successful.

Thanks for this great quote Sunkenindeaf. Nice to see you again! I'm going to think hard about this non-thinking. Maybe next time I'll be able to play again.
@sunkenindeaf inspired by your insect wisdom I'm going to play more music for insects next Friday. They are not only important but also cute.
I should get to see what they are like in Istanbul.
Thanks Nata! I think this theory works. Also, if music seems unpredictable, I expect unpredictability from it. Still, it feels good if I can guess where the music will go next. In Mozart's music, for example, this is the case. It also has little surprises that feel wonderful.
