Over the last few weekends I have been removing the N55 engine in my BMW 335i xDrive E92 coupe! It has been a fun project so far and I thought I'd document it for myself and for anyone that may want to attempt it themselves in the future. To remove the N55 engine from the car can be a daunting task and for good reasons, this is not a quick DIY, but it is a great learning experience.
Before we can even start with removing the engine, we have to make sure that it would be safe to work on and under the car. For this reason I disconnected the battery and put the car on jack stands. got busy with removing the interior air filter and both lower and upper section of housing that hold it in place. I then removed the trailing links with just a couple of bolts and proceeded to remove the intake filter housing, the cowl panel cover and the clean air pipe. Once all of these items were removed, I had easy access to the intake manifold that’s held in by 7 nuts and a screw. It's also important to unplug everything form the ECU and move the wiring loom out of the way. I then removed the serpentine belt, the alternator, and bolts for the AC compressor. As I was working on the car I was removing the coolant and the oil pipes that were in the way.
Next few big items were the catalytic converter that has to be removed or at least loosened in order to access some of the bellhousing bolts. To get the to the cat, I had to remove the engine support as well as the engine mount. BUT before I could do any of that, I had to remove the axles on both sides and cut off the exhaust from the catalytic converter. I tried everything and I could not separate them using normal methods.
The last few steps were to remove the torque converter bolts and the output shaft before separating the transmission from the engine and pulling the engine out of the car. I also put my BMW N55 engine on an engine stand to make it easier to work on.

Thank you guys for watching, I hope you found the video interesting and give it a like! I will be taking the engine apart in the next video, so don't forget to subscribe and follow this rebuild project!
Wow, mad respect to you my friend. Solo bmw work seems super scary at first but then you realize it's a normal car with some extra steps. Crazy work.
“Just me the car and music...”
That was a monumental job! You're an intrepid youtuber.
I've got most of my N55 engine on my 2011 535i disconnected. Im just left to disconnect the transmission and hopeful pull it out. I did not remove the front grill, rad etc but will hopefully get the hood disconnected to lift it straight up. Its been a long process. Im in Canada with -35 most of winter and no heated shed so has been a 3 season project. Everything is marked and thanks to your channel I will have assistance to reassemble it. Thank you so much. Great work.
“Looks good, looks great actually!…. Oh I see where the problem is” 😂
Great job! I have to pull my N55 out of my 2011 535I rwd. It'll be a little easier, but for more room to pull the motor forward, I'm going to take off the whole from end. I went to change a warped valve cover and found why it was warped in the 1st place. My #4 cylinder spark plug was stripped and forced down into the chamber, causing a high level of heat to build in that 1 area. I gotta remove the head and let a machine shop do their work. Going to replace vacuum hoses and upgrade the plastic pipes from turbo and charge pipes, to aluminum alloy. Also going to upgrade the intercooler while i have it out. Great job on the video! Will definitely help out a lot when i go to pull mine!! Much love and God bless
Thanks for sharing, man.
wowow what a huge job! I would be scarred to attempt this myself, but bravo!
Great video brother!
Great work!
Amazing work, you won't be able to put the engine on the stand without removing the fly wheel first
Wow that was a lot of work... and for that I "liked and Subscribed". I have the 535I with Manual and have oil pan leaking, I was wondering how much work was to remove oil pan. It looks like a big job $$$. Thanks for the video.
Where did you hook up the chains too on the engine to pull it out?
Hey,what bolts size goes between engine/trans for engine mounting on stand? Thanks
Where did you hook up the engine to the hoist?
Great job, thx for video, and especially for tools which you are using to separate engine from the trainy, I am trying to get engine out of my 2009 335i coupe, will do it full electric)
I have a rwd didn’t you have to remove the subframe and when do you put in the fly wheel locking pin
Hello
How did you turn the torque converter to get all the bolts?
