      Not really. In a lot of great horror you are rooting for the villain.
      Are you really caring about the characters in The Thing? Or are you enjoying the atmosphere, tension and suspense or the incredible transformation set pieces more.
      Do you really feel for the gecko brothers? Or are you enjoying the spectacle and coolness of the antics in the Titty twister?
      Sure, sympathetic characters are important sometimed but it's not top of any horror fans list of what they love about the genre.

      Yes is better the tension but with people You care about is more impact the dead of the character like also in black christmas they are characters that You caresnd don't want yo die.is better the tension I now but with people You care is a plus that mame the movie better

      @Chase Miller I disagree, homeboy, I disagree. John Carpenter and Rob Bottin is what make The Thing great. Kurt Russell is a distant third. Also the decisions the characters make are really plot developments more than character developments. But you are right I should have used the example of slashers but all my favourite ones do have some great characters.

    Me and my partner went into this movie mostly without context. It goes amazingly off the rails in a way that sorts of corny and self-aware, I can sort of see why it got badly rated if people didn't get it and didn't revel in the campiness. It seems kind of absurd but after spending a bit of time talking to weird-ass misogynistic goofs on the internet the subject matter of the film begins to seem tragically realistic, even if the satire of the film is incredibly on the nose. Overall I can see why it bombed, but the movie is a good candidate to be a cult classic (no pun intended)

    a long time ago, about 20 years, I went to a documentary about girls who were raped at their campus, it was usually a few boys that did all of it. There was a girl who was fighting to get some sort of help and she ended up dragging the mattress on which she was raped to every class, to explain how this trauma remained with her and how much it weighed. There were very few people in the theater, the actual girls of the film had come with it and they were so young, they could have been my daughters. It made me cry to listen to them. I honestly don't know if its any better yet but what you described kind of reminded me of that. Now I'll seek this one out.

I liked the demon blood as a metaphor because it felt like a great example for the way that misogyny is ingrained in structures and cultures and is passed down from generation to generation. Like it was literally ingrained in the statue of the founder of the frat by the founder of the frat. I also liked how they showed how even the good guy could be swayed by the power too as a counter to the "not all men" thing bc we saw a bunch of examples of different good guys thru out the movie but that guy was the best bc he kept trying to do right thing, and after he was mind controlled he understood that he may be a liability to their movement but he still tried to his best to make amends and keep fighting with them.

    Honestly Black Christmas kinda made me uncomfortable to watch. Like I got what it was going for and I really, REALLY wanted to like that because I really want to see a movie handle those things well, but the more the movie wore on the more it just felt like... Like, I dunno, the script maybe needed a second or third pass? Like, the characters were really what killed it for me.
    Like, rape survivor says she does not want to perform in a skimpy outfit with her rapist in the audience. And instead of saying "Hey, that's okay," her friends pressure her into it, a thing that she is so clearly uncomfortable with that she freezes up for a moment. Rape survivor says she wants you to take down the video of that performance for both legal and personal reasons, but her friends argue with her on that, too. And, you know, the person who is most pressuring her rape-survivor friend is the one who we are told is exceedingly rich but also the most activist.
    And while I liked the boyfriend character getting turned into an asshole the way he was, having the same thing done to a guy who mere seconds ago was actively participating in a plan to (for the metaphor of the story) was actively trying to stop toxic masculinity. And the act of trying to put an end to toxic masculinity and empower his female friends is what makes him into an evil man?
    Like I loved the actors, and I felt like the structure of the movie was fine. I didn't particularly care for the climactic action scene but that's entirely because I'm really into a well-done action scene and if I judge it by the standard of typical action scenes today, it was good. But I think the movie just... Really kinda felt superficial and uninterested in its own subject matter.
    Which I entirely blame on the fact that the film went from "Writer-Director is asked to make the movie" to "Released in theaters" in 11 months so that a lot of the stuff that should have been picked up on another couple script passes never got the chance.

    Hey maybe it was an awkward edit but your definition of toxic masculinity at around 3 minutes in is a bit problematic. Toxic masculinity is not inherently toxic aspects of masculinity, its toxic and harmful traits that are ascribed to masculinity by greater society the difference is subtle but important because one implies a deep level of biological essentialism while the other does not. Men are not inherently grabby assholes who repress their feelings, lash out violently and disrespect women, that is just something we are told, either explicitly or subtextually most of our lives.

    • @beccak8166
      @beccak8166 2 роки тому

      I think you might be the one engaging in bioessentialism- not saying that as a diss, sorry it sound kinda rude. But masculinity is a cultural trait distributed among people of all genders, not something essential in men

    Interesting take! I'll check it out. Everyone I heard talk about it said it was too "woke" and in your face about it but hell the original Black Christmas was way more woke and socially conscious than the 2006 remake on a lot of levels. Plus I want to see that actress from 28 weeks later in this newer remake. I really liked your other 2 Black Christmas reviews too. Have you every seen "When a Stranger Calls" with Carol Cane 1980? There's another similar classic horror stalker treat for ya! Thanks for doing this!

    No people not liking this movies are not babies just because an actual remake. Definition of a remake is a retelling of original story in an updated manner. Basic quick definition right there Black Christmas 1974 a mentally deranged person kills women in one sorority house only and makes phone calls after every kill. Then black christmas 2019 there's a story plot evolving around sexual assault committed by someone who was possessed by demon blood who then a group men possessed by demon blood goes all around campus killing women. That's not the same story as one mentally deranged person killing women in one sorority house only and making phone calls after every kill. This is why this movie failed this is why the movie gets all of the hate and criticism it gets and it's Justified. Because it's not a remake if you're going to call something a remake it has to have the same exact story as the original. So in order for black christmas 2019 to be a remake it would need to have a story about. A mentally deranged person killing women in one sorority house only and making phone calls after every kill. Then it would be a remake. But it has a story based around a sexual assault committed by someone who is possessed by demon blood then other men possessed by demon blood go all around campus and kill women. So clearly it has a different story and clearly it is not a remake. So people need to stop saying people are babies for calling this stuff out. When they are calling out the facts and criticizing it for the facts and giving it a hate for the facts. I mean 2:57 minutes in and you're completely describing a different movie that has nothing to do with the original black Christmas from 1974. As a person that makes videos you need to know what words mean please look up the definition of a remake and people believe this movie is a remake please look up the definition of a remake. Because nowhere in the story of the original Black Christmas 1974 was there any. Mention of demon blood coming out of a statue and processing men causing them to commit crimes against women. Then cousin said men who was possessed by demon blood to kill women all over campus. This is a whole new separate movie and it should have been called something else because it's not a remake of Black Christmas 1974. Because at 3:09 minutes and you trying to defend this movie as a black Christmas remake officially hurt my brain and killed brain cells.
