- This is an old traditional recipe for homemade cough syrup. It has a high alcohol content so if you are sensitive in any way this is not the cough syrup for you.
I am not a medical professional and make no specific claims as to whether it will cure anything in particular.
Thanks for the recipe! Wet winter this year. Cold and pneumonia weather. This will be good to have on hand!🤗
I remember Vicks 44 growing up. What an awesome recipe to try and keep around! Love the tip with the cooking spray.
Thanks for watching!
Wow! Luv the spray trick! Always learning something!!Thanks 😊
Hello: here’s the recipe we use. Most popular among physicians, many years ago:
1 cup bourbon or whiskey
1 cup molasses
Juice from 1 large lemon
6-10 pieces Horehound candy( finely ground)
Mix all together in a saucepan and heat on low-medium, until well-mixed . Pour into bottles. 😊
Thanks for sharing!
Awesome old times recipe thank you.
Thank You for sharing, Great Idea *👍
I had those same pots , my mom gave me a set. They have been passed down to my daughter. Not sure but I think there from Over Seas. I know they were in Germany for awhile. And they have traveled around other areas . Brought back memories 😉
Can’t wait to make this! Cold season is here in North Dakota!
Thank You for Sharing.
I'm going to try it out.
Oh yes, I remember this! It always worked amazing. Thanks for the tutorial, will be making it!
You are so welcome!
This surprised me, and is certainly worth a try!
I’ve made this it help a lot thank you for your r recipe!
Great to hear!
I can’t wait to try this! Cough syrup with my grandson. Thank you for sharing it with all of us.
Be careful if he's young. It has alcohol in it.
@@2leelouCreatesThank you for the reminder 🙂
Vicks formula 44 remember this from the 70’s always worked great! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Great video! I have added this to my list of home remedies and will try it. Covid has left me with a residual cough I can't seem to shake after several months so I'm excited to try this!
Oh no! I hope you get over it soon. Suh a nasty virus!
I have heard do not sleep on our back because that collapses the lungs, sleep on your stomach or sides. Hopefully this helps.
The old home remedies are the best!!
I think so too.
This is on my to try list!
Every time I watch you I’m drooling over your beautiful jars(flour-sugar etc.) can you tell me where to find them???
I got a couple sets of those at Costco a couple years ago. I love them too!
Very easy, thank you ⭐
My best friend’s grandma used to make some kind of onion juice concoction. We used to suppress our coughs whenever we were around her. Haha. This is a great idea. I usually have bourbon around since I like to cook with it.
Onion juice and honey. Nasty as sin.
@@09echols 🤢 think that's a case of The cure is worse than the illness! Yuk!
Haha, I think it's one of those things that it cures your cough because you keep from coughing to keep from taking it.
2leelou Creates so true. Whenever we had cuts as kids, my mom would whip our her favorite first aid product, Merthiolate. We hid our cuts from my mom too. That stuff was wicked on cuts. She had a cure for the “I’m too sick to go to school” excuse Castor oil or the threat of castor oil could bring an instant miracle. Haha
I remember Methiolate that stuff really burned.
Thank you for sharing, that was easy
Aka Marcia Klein, my grandma on the farm made this. Age didn't matter, if you had a cough she'd have the jar & spoon ready for ya. Gonna make this recipe too. Thanks
will need to try this!
Learn something everyday lol I really enjoyed this video.
Awesome! Thank you!
great video 👍 Blessings
This is awesome! I have to make this for sure. Can to tell us how long it will store on the shelf or in the fridge so I don’t waste it?
It will store in the fridge a long time. I've never seen anything specific. I usually make one jar and it lasts through cold and flu season.
Thank you..need this recipe around the house...just in case!
It's handy that's for sure.
Thanks for the recipe. I've had a pesky cough since I got the whooping cough vaccine!! Hopefully this will help!!
I hope so too!
Need to make this now! I've had a cough for over a week! Do you have anything for a stopped up ear? Thank you for sharing!
Nothing or the ear, sorry.
Never thought of making & canning cough medicine.
Thanks.
Hello, how often do I take it and how much, thank you🥰
Sounds like a great cough syrup but also wondered how long it would keep. Nancy
I usually just make one jar per winter season. Although I think it would last quite a long while in the fridge.
TY n Sharing😃
I just made this tonight. Thanks again for sharing. I like it, but but really wish I had used way more peppermint. All I couls taste was the molasses. I like molasses but it was still too strong tasting to me. I used 8 pieces of candy to 1c each of the liquids. (I did have to go with Vodka because of how expensive everything else was. I was told by the cashier it was because of the mad rush and shortage that was caused by everyone using it to make hand sanitizer.
Anyway, I'm curious... Have you ever tried to make this recipe using Peppermint Schnapps? Or does schnapps have too little alcohol to it to use?
I've never tried that. I suspect it would work. I think really the only reason the alcohol is in there is to relax maybe.
I remember watching my mom make this cough syrup. Thanks for sharing~!
Vicks formula 44 has always been my favorite cough medicine. You said it was not for long term storage but could you please tell me approximately how long its good for? (That would help me to determine how much to make...if it's only good for a week or two I'd make a much smaller batch) Thank you!
I think the shelf life is likely several years, none of those ingredients expire quickly, plust alcohol is a preservative the higher the proof the longer the shelf life will be. the batch she made is 45% ABV as far as I know anything that high never really "expires" and I've kept molasses for a long time without it spoiling (which I readily admit is due to the sugar content so diluting that may or may not decrease it's shelf life. I know that's probably a messier answer than you were looking for but I would honestly suspect that you would use this up before it expires...
@@wfleming537 Great to know! To be honest, i figured with simmering it for a couple of hours, it would burn off most of the alcohol. But yes, I've had molasses sitting in the cupboard for what is probably eons, and it never seems to go bad...may get a little thicker and stickier but otherwise just the same as when it was opened.😃 Thank you!
I usually have it around for cold and flu season. I only make the one jar and keep it in the fridge. I use a shot glass and warm it up a bit.
Can I use honey, and how will I use the cooking spray. Is the water a warm water or cold water?
Will be making this ty
this looks good. Especially for a family who live in the country and might not have a chance to go to town for Vicks 44 or other cough syrup. So how much do you take at a time, a heaping tablespoon ful?
I take a teaspoon or two. But I rarely take medicine or drink alcohol so a little goes a long way for me.
@@2leelouCreates Thanks,
Thanks for the video. This will be perfect for my family (they are all adults). About how much take for cough?
I usually just take one teaspoon.
the only cough syrup that EVER worked for me was Vicks 44D after I got married and moved away, no more home remedies when ur a military spouse that gets sent everywhere, now that we retired out Iwant that 44D back, IT WORKED...I hated that they stopped making it, looking back I think more ppl would have survived covid if it had been available...JMO
I loved that stuff. You're right. It worked.
Can I make this with honey and lemon drops? Wasn’t sure if the molasses works better than honey or if it’s a taste preference. Thank you for your time in showing us. I remember Vicks Formula 44 also.
I've only ever known of using molasses. I suspect it might be that molasses has a lot of good minerals and other things that might just bump it up a bit more than honey for a recipe like this.
@@2leelouCreates ok thank you for answering. Makes sense
Sounds good! How much peppermint extract to replace the candy? I believe that shaking a jar of hot liquid could cause it to explode! Be careful!
I've never used anything but the candy. I am pretty cautious about shaking the jar. Sometimes I just take to top off and stir it too.
Oh that looks good lol .....getting my shot glass out . Seriously going to make this .
Could I use cough drops instead of peppermints?
I love Canuary!
This is great cough medicine. Have you ever tried to make cough drops from this mixture.?
I haven't. Thats a thought though. I think I'll do some research on how to do that.
Can I switch out the peppermint to another flavor like cherry? If I don’t like peppermint
Sure!
Have you tried adding lemon peel to it may help
You could do that too. It would probably add a little tartness.
Can you use peppermint extract instead of crushing peppermints? If so how much?
I suspect you could. I've never done it that way, though. You'd have to adjust the amount to your own taste.
Making Lean 101 😂 just need to smash some percs into it..
Could you use something other than peppermint?
I have used spearmint. It's good too.
You should make a thc syrup for people in pain instead of using addicting meds! If you’re in a green state! Sorry if I offended anyone with this comment I know all people don’t approve using thc
Lol you know whenever you just know you like someone just by hearing them talk? That’s how it is with this video lol she’s cool
Woo hoo
Ok that is cool, whiskey eh... well that I have
👍✌️🙏♥️
is it codeine?
No
@@2leelouCreates im really craving some codeine right now
Maam, you need to be a cook !
So making this! That stuff was disgusting 🤢
