Paul was a diehard Slayer fan when he joined,so for him its like a dream come true to drum in his favorite band. With all this respect he plays with all his hearth in the band and thats ALL any band can ask for!
One evening in 1994 my friend came to my apartment with Divine Intervention which just got out and, being a die-hard Lombardo fan, I was blown away. We played the cd for hours until the neighbor from two below came knocking on my door because he couldn't sleep lol. Lombardo and Bostaph both are gods.
Sabianfan dude, I remember when DI has released and I'm just like you, a die hard Lombardo fan, but instead of your atitude, I hated The álbum for non reason, just hate, months later I decided to listen again and, damned, its a masterpiece, amazing album, then became my favorite with Paul on drums, I also love DIM !!! Slayer rules !!!
It's nice to see someone who can feel good about himself without dogging on somebody else - even his predecessor. That's strong, imo. Huge fan of both amazing drummers - and that's saying something, because drums are especially highlighted in Slayer's music.
Nope, I have the album, Been listening to it for 20 years. Paul recorded the drums. Dette toured with the band and was on the I hate you video but didn't record anything. Get your facts straight.
Hell yea I listen to a lot of punk rock and Jeff liked punk also he had a lot of influence on that album lol Kerry didn't understand punk he's too metal lol
I remember the day Divine Intervention came out, I took the day off school to go buy it, brought it home, smoked something and cranked it on a large system. The intro drums to killing fields sold me straight away on Bostaph.
i know exactly what he's referring to. dave lombardo is why i got into drums and i was nervous as hell to hear a new drummer. but the opening to the divine album put me at ease....this guy was a great fit
THE best choice for Daves replacement for WHATEVER REASON. Pauls a VERY humble guy and a GREAT drummer. Very very underrated drummer and one of the best, one of my personal favorites, metal drummers of all time. PAUL RULES SLAYTANIC FOREVER
I like how he respects the sound and that's exactly what you want when you have a new band member in the band. Respecting the sound is respecting the band and the fan.
Paul did all right, I was nervous when Divine came out, but was blown away by Pauls style, I see the band as having two paths, two flavors, both world class!
Paul's thoughts on Nicko McBrain playing on Where Eagles Dare is exactly how I felt when hearing him play on Killing Fields off of Divine Intervention.
Much respect man! Stepping in for a legend like Dave with everybody doubting you and owning that shit like a boss. You're forever a part of this band in my eyes man
Paul is good guy. I prefer Lombardo's style and creativity, but I have to say, Paul is tighter live, and God Hates Us All is my favorite album, tied with Reign In Blood, and Bostaph plays on it. I don't feel like it took away anything from the quality of the songs.
that's true, but he does have signature parts, like the double bass breakdown in angel of death... ending of ghost of war is another one of those signature moments IMO
I like Paul Bostaph. He made me continue liking Slayer even after DL left. Such a great choice for replacement. I was very skeptic because in my books, SITA is the best Slayer album and on the Monsters of Rock, PB was the one to play drums and I was very impressed he held through with flying colors.
Divine Intervention was the first Slayer album I ever listened to with Killing Fields being the first song I listened to, and when I heard that drum intro I was blown away as I had never heard anything like that before. So basically what I am saying is the first time I heard Slayer, or the first material I heard from Slayer was with Paul Bostaph. The Dave Lombardo stuff came after that.
I can't hate on such a cool guy. I was a doubter when Dave left as well. I even felt like Paul overplayed a little when he came in. But what a cool dude. 2 thumbs up man keep it heavy.
This guy is an amazing drummer and everyone would admit that if it wasnt for him having to be compared to Dave Lombardo every second of his career with Slayer. But I mean is anyone as good as Dave?
At the end of the day, both Lombardo and Bostaph are INCREDIBLE drummers! I'd like to know if they've ever met each other, had a couple of beers and talked about drumming?
Tucson, Aug 12, 1994 at the tiny Buena Vista Theater. Probably less than 500 people. I believe my buddy won the tix on a radio show in Phoenix and it was advertised as a show using their new drummer. It was like a month and a half before Divine Intervention was released. What a scary ass show. Mayhem.
Well Paul, to be honest I like Dave better as a drummer, but Divine Intervention is my second favorite Slayer album and only second to Seasons and a big part of why I like it is the drumming.
Lombardo is a fucking god. He is like the best drummer in metal. When he left slayer and tgis guy came i was like "fuck another jackass replaces another god" but after a few research i made i found out that his a really good guy and drummer
Paul is an amazing drummer, but just like Mike Mangini he stepped into a huge band that had a sound whose foundation was a very specific drum sound. I know it must suck for both of them being constantly compared to their predecessors, but that's just the way it goes. Slayer's legacy is built partly on Dave's drumming. They would never have been as good with another drummer.
Pauls contribution to divine intervention was really cool. abstract and even progressive. I was sad slayer didn't do more of that stuff in odd time signatures.
I so completely understand where he is coming from... when a band that has a huge influence on you asked you to replace a guy that is one of your mentors the pressure is overwhelming...all you can do is your best😎
Fuck, and they didnt play "behind" on the last tour. Paul doesnt need to explain himself to anyone, when i first heard killing fields, i knew he was awesome. my only regret is not meeting him, i read too many bad reviews of that meet and greet shit, since slayer never done it before.
I love Dave Lombardo and will forever be my biggest influence but that doesn't mean paul isn't good either. His drumming on divine and especially diabolus were my first cracks on trying to get on the technical side of drumming before I went to shit like korn and tool to mastodon.
I took Paul over Dave, I was 19, a HUGE Nicko fan, just like Paul. Still am. And he was like Nicko on speed, his high hat work, drum fills, "phrasing" as he says and so on. To they are my big TWO top influences. I'm only 47 but also loved Bill Ward, Ian Paice, Carl Palmer etc. Then moving into thrash, Lar's approach was just so hard hitting, and there music (back then) was so ahead of it's time, just like early Sabbath. Even though i was like 6 to 9 I still heard and loved that stuff. Now there's just too many younger kids that are incredible, especially in the Death Metal scene which I love. But PAUL is what threw me into the speedy, double bass, fast fill stuff. And I covered GEMINI (by Slayer) which was just phenomenal. And many people don't even know about it, or how to play it correctly. I learned it backwards and forwards because it was just this masterpiece of everything I had learned from about 6 when I started playing. Thanks PAUL!!
Paul is an exceptional drummer and has recorded some of my favorite Slayer songs. These include Sex Murder Art, Circle of Beliefs, SS-3, Bitter Peace, Point, Disciple, and Here Comes The Pain. I'm totally fine with him as Slayer's drummer until the band calls it quits.
Best Slayer drummer for me. I first heard Slayer on a mix tape my friends brother made around 93-94. It had Seasons of the Abyss and Dead Skin Mask on it (still some of my favourites) Slayer then released Devine Intervention. That drum roll at the beginning of Killing Fields blew me away and I knew they were in good hands with Bostaph. I saw them at the time in Leeds with a young up and coming band called Machine Head. That album was the soundtrack to my early years at high school. I even stole the lyrics from Devine Intervention and made them into a poem about school for an English lesson 😂 My teacher liked that much it was put in the wall haha They didn’t know it was Slayer 👍🏻👍🏻
Kerry is basically the voice for Slayer. Just like Scott Ian is the voice for Anthrax, Dave Mustaine is the voice for Megadeth, and Lars is the voice for Metallica.
Dave will always be the man but Paul is a pretty damn good replacement and the same thing with Gary, he's a great guitar player but I really miss Jeff. I'm just glad they're still keeping it alive even though they've all lost some steps in their old ages.
Paul absolutely proved himself with the opening song (Killing Fields) of his debut on Divine Intervention!
It's my favourite Slayer song, completely captivating and amazing
AMEN
Forbidden evil and Twisted into Form proved how amazing Paul was as a drummer.
Dave Lombardo is THE MAN, but Paul is also a ridiculously amazing drummer and sounds great with Slayer.
Nope
@@smkxodnwbwkdns8369 Killing Fields
can he do that fill in Seasons in The Aybss?
Jon dette the best
Paul was a diehard Slayer fan when he joined,so for him its like a dream
come true to drum in his favorite band. With all this respect he plays
with all his hearth in the band and thats ALL any band can ask for!
and withno salary at all
Paul seems like such a nice, genuine guy. Much love and respect for him.
He is.

Slayer rules !!!
Sabianfan nearly the same experience for me. I still remember my cousin bringing the disk over and being completely floored by Paul’s abilities.
In my opinion they are both equally good
Yup! Fully agree. My 3 neighbors are huge Slayers fans too, they just havent realised it yet , but I'm helping them !
good to see an interview were the person isn't cutting the guy off
Hey thanks! I care about what Paul has to say, not me. I interject when he is done speaking.
Awesome!
that cleavage in the middle of his head is cutting his haircut in the middle off though
his playing in divine was so good. decades later the album amd his playing on it still excites me.
It's nice to see someone who can feel good about himself without dogging on somebody else - even his predecessor. That's strong, imo. Huge fan of both amazing drummers - and that's saying something, because drums are especially highlighted in Slayer's music.
When he joined Slayer in the early 90's, he cited Dave Lombardo and Lars Ulrich as his biggest influences in drumming.
Paul's work on undisputted attitude is just amazing.
NuncFluens lol, Jon Dette was drummer on that album.
That's the only stuff that I like that he is ever done live or Studio.. and he absolutely kills on that bigtime as it's tight choppy punk rock
@@sdtghjhcPaul specifically said in this very video that he drummed on that album don't know what you're on about
I remember the day Divine Intervention came out, I took the day off school to go buy it, brought it home, smoked something and cranked it on a large system. The intro drums to killing fields sold me straight away on Bostaph.
^ this!
Legendary moment
i know exactly what he's referring to. dave lombardo is why i got into drums and i was nervous as hell to hear a new drummer. but the opening to the divine album put me at ease....this guy was a great fit
Paul is a machine, brilliant drummer and a ripper bloke. Dave rules yes, so does Paul. The negativity of people posting here is absurd.
Paul rules undoubtedly!
@@AggressiveTendencies no bostaph sucks dave lombardo kicks his ass all day everyday anyday

not necessarily true
THE best choice for Daves replacement for WHATEVER REASON. Pauls a VERY humble guy and a GREAT drummer. Very very underrated drummer and one of the best, one of my personal favorites, metal drummers of all time. PAUL RULES SLAYTANIC FOREVER
Paul Bostaph and Dave Lombardo are both legends. Great interview with a great bloke \m/
I'd like to see Paul and Dave work on a project together, regardless of genre.
Paul is a BEAST!
I like how he respects the sound and that's exactly what you want when you have a new band member in the band. Respecting the sound is respecting the band and the fan.
Paul did all right, I was nervous when Divine came out, but was blown away by Pauls style, I see the band as having two paths, two flavors, both world class!
Favorite song from the Divine album for me is, 213. Used to listen to it on repeat over and over and over again.
sal DLA That was Jeffrey dalmers apparment #
He's a great drummer, and personally my favorite in Slayer. I love his style
Even though I prefer Lombardo but I respect Paul a lot
Paul's thoughts on Nicko McBrain playing on Where Eagles Dare is exactly how I felt when hearing him play on Killing Fields off of Divine Intervention.
Paul did a great job
I have a new found respect for Paul Bostaph knowing he looked up to Dave. Dave will always be the best!! Paul falls in a close second.
Paul is second to none. one of the most underrated drummers out there. the dude is a badass.
You're are both great drummers!!!
He's a great musician. And he seems like a genuine and nice guy. I love his insights.
I was sold when I heard the intro to killing fields. Proof accepted. And then that long tom roll at the beginning of 213 blew me away.
Behind The Crooked Cross fucking rocks! Great choice!
the last part of ghost of war is pretty fuckin badass too drum-wise.
sqlb3rn segfavlt It's Dave Lombardo we're talking about - he doesn't have bad drum parts, like, at all.
that's true, but he does have signature parts, like the double bass breakdown in angel of death... ending of ghost of war is another one of those signature moments IMO
Simple Guy Lombardo show to the mortals that he is a fucking god in that song
I like Paul Bostaph. He made me continue liking Slayer even after DL left. Such a great choice for replacement. I was very skeptic because in my books, SITA is the best Slayer album and on the Monsters of Rock, PB was the one to play drums and I was very impressed he held through with flying colors.
I appreciate that he gives proper respect to Dave. Props to Paul.
i always thought that slayer always manage to have great drummer, both Lombardo and Bostaph are amazing drummers
Will always love Dave's work but Bostaph is a worthy replacement...SLAYER!!!
Grygore69 I hope Paul likes getting ripped off then$$$$$$
One of two great Slayer drummers. Much respect \m/
I never paid attention who was drummer, and strangely my favorite albums are those where Paul plays! amazing drummer, powerfull groove and beat.
Divine intervention is my favorite slayer album but Paul seemed to really be able to nail lamabrdos songs live he was still good tho
divine intervention is one of the best albums I've ever heard it's hammering from beginning to end
love you Paul...i love the music you give us! Thank you for everything ! it's my strain now
Bostaph and Lombardi, two great drummers each has his own groove
I love how Paul said he likes how Nicko made a good first impression with When Eagles Dare. Paul did that with Killing Fields \m/
Great interview, Mr. Bostaph. Seems like a pretty cool guy : )
He's awesome!
Very insightful, humble and respectable interview.
I can't hate on such a cool guy. I was a doubter when Dave left as well. I even felt like Paul overplayed a little when he came in. But what a cool dude. 2 thumbs up man keep it heavy.
Love the attitude. That is a winners mindset and yep, that is still my fav Slayer album and has stand out drumming. Slayer drummers are the GOAT 🐐
Both Lombardo & Bostaph are bad ass drummers!!
I love them both and i love Slayerrrrrr
This guy is an amazing drummer and everyone would admit that if it wasnt for him having to be compared to Dave Lombardo every second of his career with Slayer. But I mean is anyone as good as Dave?
Paul is a beast real slayer fans like him
Love the respect Paul and Dave have 💪
Your awesome Paul,.... big Fan!
At the end of the day, both Lombardo and Bostaph are INCREDIBLE drummers! I'd like to know if they've ever met each other, had a couple of beers and talked about drumming?
Yes.
He looks exactly like a slayer kind of dude. Go Bostaph!
I love Paul man. Solid fucking drummer.
Kasper Rottbøll Dave stopped hanging around with Kerry ;)

Well Paul, to be honest I like Dave better as a drummer, but Divine Intervention is my second favorite Slayer album and only second to Seasons and a big part of why I like it is the drumming.
love the Maiden reference to Nicko and Clive
Slayer made the right choice with Paul. Undisputed attitude is probably my most favorite
What he did with Slayer is really good, but you should check him out playing for ForbiddeN, Twisted into form. You'll be blown away!

Divine Intervention is one of my favorite Slayer albums. Don’t let anyone give you any shit Paul, Dave is awesome but so are you.
Pauls fav slayer songs are also mine ! 2 under rated songs... I was hoping he'd mention one but both is a result !
Metal bands have the most intelligent musicians. This dude is a bad ass drummer to boot...
All the albums this guy did he deserves props......probably earned fuck all
Paul Ghost of War my favorite song in SOH aka South Of Heaven and love Silent Scream as well

Paul is such a nice bloke! He must have the thickest skin too to have gotten through working with Kerry!
Always be the best drummer for me.
Behind the crooked cross has the most fills of any slayer track, its basically a Dave Lombardo drum solo
To me..live.undead is the.drum solo song..
I would like to see paul playing behind the crocked cross one of my favourite slayer’s song too
Divine Intervention is my favorite Slayer album!
I love Dave Lombardo and will forever be my biggest influence but that doesn't mean paul isn't good either. His drumming on divine and especially diabolus were my first cracks on trying to get on the technical side of drumming before I went to shit like korn and tool to mastodon.
Mission accomplished!
Paul deserves more credit than he gets. Divine Intervention is one of Slayer's best albums.

Just two completely diffrrent styles, two great drummers!!
Paul's best song is Dittohead.
The fact that Paul is in fact a better drummer than Dave, he has been very humble over the years.
Great songs!
Wait I thought Dave played on disciple
also: Killing Fields, Gemini, God Send Death and Divine Intervention! And Disciple is one of the best ones in Slayer's history.
Best Slayer drummer for me. I first heard Slayer on a mix tape my friends brother made around 93-94. It had Seasons of the Abyss and Dead Skin Mask on it (still some of my favourites)
Slayer then released Devine Intervention. That drum roll at the beginning of Killing Fields blew me away and I knew they were in good hands with Bostaph. I saw them at the time in Leeds with a young up and coming band called Machine Head.

Haha the poem story rules. And yeah, Divine is such a ripper of an album!
saw them on the same tour at Brixton academy, damn that was a good gig. Then again at donington 95
Kerry is basically the voice for Slayer. Just like Scott Ian is the voice for Anthrax, Dave Mustaine is the voice for Megadeth, and Lars is the voice for Metallica.
Paul is classy lad and great drummer.
Just my opinion but divine intervention is underrated and possibly underappreciated... fantastic album!
It is a great album.. just mixed horribly 🤘
Paul acts like a true professional.
great album! and drums!
That's a real drummers forearm right there.

forbidden evil is a great album
THIS IS A FACT!
Killing Fields is a masterpiece. Both Dave and Paul are elite at their craft. There’s none like Slayer.
