Dave is so humble, when Jeff passed and left SLAYER, I messaged him with condolences and he messaged back a couple of times with many thanks, like who does that??? Dave's the GOAT
For me Slayer "retired" with death of Jeff and departure of Dave.
Agreed. They were never as good 🤷♂️
@@antondzajajurca7797 💯, but that saying Paul ang Holt are beasts!!!!
@@antondzajajurca7797you think that because you're not a true fan
@@nategin9009 No. facts are facts, don't be a fan boi.
Back in the mid nineteen when Grip Inc. was on tour with Morbid Angel Dave just finished his set with Grip. As he was walking back stage I was in the front row (with a Slayer cap) yelling “Dave, play a drum solo!!!!”. I figure he didn’t hear me so I turned around to bullshit with a buddy and a moment later I hear “should I do it?”. Lo and behold Dave heard me. Naturally I yelled “F’ yea!!!” As did everyone around me once they figured out what was happening. Dave looks at me and says “this is for you…”, he got back up on stage behind his set and ripped out a drum solo. That was the highlight of my musical life, Dave dedicating a solo to me. I will leave this earth a happy mofo because Dave F’n Lombardo dedicated a solo to me! Thank you Dave!!! (RIP Gus)
This never happened.
He dedicated to me. This guy is lying
@@robertgillen979 jealousy will get you no where.
Sounds unrealistic. But who knows. Im not buying it. Its a nice story though
@@echoman1975 like I give a crap what you believe…lol
Dave’s drumming is 75% of what makes Slayer Slayer
More than 75%....
That's fair...
@@2000jago If you take into account the pioneering aspect of it I reckon it'd be even higher; Dave completely reinvented the drum fill while playing at absurd speeds WITHOUT cheating on the hats. Everyone else does a great job of keeping up and creating an awesomely dark atmosphere but when you listen to Divine Intervention that darkness is gone. He's arguably a 'lead drummer' in a way, not unlike Dale Crover or Mitch Mitchell.
Nah, the guitar parts are more important.
Dave was slayer, Tom can’t sing and kerry rode Jeff’s coattails the whole time.
How can someone not love this guy, he so chill and authentic. Slayer were idiots to treat him like this, especially after the death of Jeff.
Agreed. Dave deserves proper recognition financially wise, compatible to his gigantic contribution to Slayer sound and Metal as a whole. Without Dave, Slayer woudn't be the same iconic behemoth they have turned into.
Lombardo was as vital to Slayer as Bonham was vital to Led Zeppelin.
His performances both on record and live, the tuning of his drums, his percussive creativity staggered me way back in 1983 when I first heard and purchased Show No Mercy on cassette and eventually on vinyl.
40 F-ing years has sped on by and he still remains phenomenal and relevant, and is much appreciated in the rock and metal world.
Pretty killer.
Kerry chose money over talent. That was an extremely shitty move.
@@zombiTrout Paul Bostaf is clearly highly skilled. But he's not Lombardo in style and in legacy. That's mainly what's it's about.
They were so incredibly stupid to mess with one of their co-founders. He's so important to slayer and to metal.
South of Heaven still stands the test of time. I love his drumming on that album!
Me too! I could listen to just the drum tracks without all the other instruments. It’s magical.
I’ve been listening to South of Heaven quite a bit lately…I think it’s Slayer’s best album because of the variety of tones and tempos.
Obviously Slayer should be hard and fast, but I love some of the slower, spookier, more melodic aspects of SoH.
And it’s Dave’s masterwork…the fills all over that album are simply jaw-dropping.
Behind the crooked cross
Same here everyone says Reign in Blood but South his drumming is insane the songs have space in them where he does these insane fills.
It’s outstanding. Still.
That double bass fill in Angel of Death still gives me chills
Fastest double bass at the time
4 real
He is literally THE founding father of heavy metal drumming for everything that came after him. That badass driving double bass they like to call "blast-beats" now, Dave cast the die on that shit. It's all over Slayer's greatest hits, but a great example is "Silent Scream" from South Of Heaven. It goes through the intro, then the double bass just starts driving so hard it rips your face off. THROUGH THE WHOLE SONG. There will never be another Dave Lombardo.
Yep, it's bad ass.
When Reign in blood dropped in 86 it made me throw my Metallica albums away.
This is Rick Beato level of amazing. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, SAM. Whether you want it or not, that anthropology background is going to drag you into historian territory. Longer interviews. Save this for us metal heads that need this recorded and saved. Future generations need this information and it's incredibly important to record this. Years from now some drummer, fighting through depression, anger and resentment will stumble upon this, and Dave's articulate voice will help him. You are a shepherd and now a steward. Use that presence wisely my friend.
Amen, great to see Sam back in this format. Blow it up as requested above!
100%. There are in appetite for this in longer form. Just not enough of this out there for these legends.
These interviews are wonderful. More please!
Really big words. All true.
Yeah this is great, hats off to you. It takes two to tango, Dave has a lot going on.
Ghosts of War breakdown is one of the most irresistible air-drumming moments in recorded music.
Word!!🤟🏽
Love Dave definitely one of the greatest drummers ever!!
Yes, he is.
Dave is a legend one of the best metal drummers of the All time
My favorite living drummer, Bonham being the other….
@@psychonautpupildiallater7734 his the drummer for led zeppelin
@@JohnWayne-vf5bs Yep, and he’s dead.
Zeppelin was my favorite band as a kid.
Then I discovered Slayer at about age 17.
They became my favorite. So Dave is my favorite living drummer, Bonham is my favorite dead drummer, followed by Keith Moon.
@@psychonautpupildiallater7734 so are you a death metal fan
@@JohnWayne-vf5bs Yes, not like a super fan but yeah… I like most genres of music. Thrash is probably my favorite though… I’ve recently been listening to Anthrax pretty hard.
One of my all-time favorites!!! It makes me like him even more to see how humble he is about his legacy
Amazing drummer and a great dude, so humble and easy to talk to. Definitely a drummer’s drummer 🔥🤘
What a humble, down to earth, and friendly guy. Such a pleasure to watch
Randomly ran into Dave at Disneyland about 17 years ago when i was 14 or so, I recognized him immediately, he was just hanging out by himself waiting for someone, i walked up to him and introduced myself an kindof fanboy'd out a lil, he was cool as could be and took a picture with me. Literally made my entire trip. Still got that picture somewhere. Lombardo is the homie!
Yes, Dave is one of the original Disney characters :D
Funny, I saw him at Disneyland as well, it was Valentine's Day 2013 and he was with his lady, so I didn't interrupt, but I regret not showing my respect.
South Of Heaven is a masterclass in drumming. Absolute fucking legend!
Best drummer of our generation. He has a good sense of rhythm and his drumming is not just a job it’s a passion.
Ghost of War is a total master piece. Every time people talk about it, I almost cry of love, this song is AMAZING. Thanks Dave for everything you've done with SLAYERRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
Lombardo might have one of the most distinctive playing styles of any drummer in metal. You can instantly tell if it’s Lombardo fill when you hear it. Awesome interview!
You’re right!! I was at a music festival two years ago where Dave had played in three different bands in one night. It was Suicidal Tendencies, Body Count and The Misfits. And this was before I found out it was him, but the way the drums were being played man I was like that sounds like fucking Dave’s style.
Great interview! Dave Lombardo seems like a really cool guy.
Great interview Sam. Dave is a legend.
Great interview dude. Slayer is my all time favorite metal band, and Dave definitely raised the bar for all metal drummers when he first came on the scene. Met the dude once, and he was super cool and humble. Lombardo is the man!
I could listen to him talk drums for hours
Slayer losing Lombardo was just so wrong to me. DAVE MADE SLAYER! No other band was so defined by their amazing drums like Slayer.
I was still happy with Divine Intervention. But you know THE THING me and my drummer were doing when listening to Divine was COMPARING TO LOMBARDO.
Dave Lombard is the man. Slayer fan since the early/mid 80's. Bummed that he's been jacked around a bit from the Slayer camp, but proud he's kept his head held high and kept doing what he does. Mad respect!
Great interview Sam!
In retrospect, the falling out with Slayer seems to have turned out well for him as he's been able to showcase his versatility with a wide variety of bands. Amazing adaptability 🤘
I've been listening to South of Heaven since 1988 and to this day, no drum fills from any other drummer (with exception maybe to Neil Peart) gives me goosebumps like those of the legendary Dave Lombardo! Great interview Sam! We miss you on the channel man!
Yes, That record drum sound give so much justice to Dave playing than any other record i heard of him.
Teriffic production on that record and Dave was on top form and mixing things up, coming off the back of the ultimate thrash album of the era.
When I heard the album on its release, I hated it wholeheartedly (I was in the camp of Slayer fans, wanted them doing countless RiB type of albums). Then, I read the lyrics and it all made sense to me. SoH is, and probably will be, my second favourite Slayer album.
This guy is one of my musical heroes. My #1 favorite drummer for sure. It’s so cool to see his interviews and find that he is “just” a human being, because when he plays he is like some supernatural being.
This man is so damn humble. What a dude.
I had tears man. This interview contains everything that made me a metalhead when I was 10. This is home.
One of the best drummers of all time. Crazy to say that I have seen him with Slayer, Misfits, Mr Bungle, Suicidal Tendencies, and Dead Cross.
Thank you he's gotta be my favorite drummer for 30plus years ,keep on killing it Dave.......
I lived down the street from Dave when I was in high school. 1996 One day I was outside skateboarding around and I could hear loud music like a band playing, coming from somewhere in the neighborhood. So I investigated, found the house, and knocked on the door (once they could hear me )He answered the door. it was Dave Lombardo!. Super nice humble guy. Let me listen to his band practice in the garage. I got to meet the guys from (Grip Inc.) He had a full studio and a crazy big drum set in the garage. After that day he let me come by a few more times. He Taught me a few things on the drums. He was always friendly and made time to hang out. Listen to music and I would watch him play drums. Will never forget those times . Thank you Dave for being such a nice guy to some random kid in the neighborhood. After hearing him say that's what he did as a kid. Hearing a band nearby or someone playing the drums and wanting to check it out. Probably why he was so nice to another kid doing the same thing. Gave me some cool memories, stories and made me an even bigger fan.
Dave is the sweetest guy. It’s all about the music for him and I love that! One of my drumming heroes! He is known for his time with “Slayer” but he is so much more dynamic than thrash and speed! Super musician!
Sam Dunn: an authority interviewer, documenter, researcher and story teller of the bands and muscicians we love! A monster persoanlity and a necessity to know more about the artists we admire! Thank you for this interview Sam...always breaking ground on any of your projects! A true diamond the value that you bring to knowledge and legacy of these artists and music !!!!
Dave Lombardo is legend! His musicianship is so distinct, easily recognizable and inspiring. Above all, he is such a great individual. I really didn't want this interview to end. Thank you!
Dave is such a humble and down-to-earth man after all these years full of experiences. Absolutely love his character!
Love Dave Lombardo! His work with the early days of Slayer was phenomenal! Such humble guy! 🤘
Eternal influence, great human being, undisputed master, thanks to him I am a drummer, I remember when in 2005 I saw the Dvd "Still Reigning" and immediately fell in love with Lombardo's drumming and I immediately made the decision to become a drummer and I never regret it. On the other hand I would like to share with you a little story. Dave Lombardo came in 2014 to Bogota, Colombia to a Drum Clinic and there was the possibility of "Meet and Greet". and I unfortunately had no money at that time, I told my mother the situation and she told me that she would lend me the money (which made me very happy) and as time went by, when I was going to pay her the money, she told me that no, don't worry, she was giving me the money as a gift. That is to say, because of my mother I was able to meet, hug and take a picture with Dave Lombardo. It was the best day of my life.
Thank you so much for this interview!
Lombardo is a *HUGE* influence on me and so many other drummers!
This was a great interview, Kudos for not going after the "low hanging fruit questions " like Why you left Slayer, and do you still keep contact..and whatever. Very positive, informative, and reflecting on what he's doing since leaving Slayer...Excellent!!!
Thanks for watching!
I was very fortunate to spend a weekend with Dave back in November 1984! Super Cool Dude! Mad double bass drumming skills!!
Dude played on Reign in Blood, Seasons in the Abyss, and Testament's "The Gathering". He's the GOAT.
I've grown to really admire Dave, through Patton. I had the pleasure of meeting 4 of the guys from Mr. Bungle last month. The conversation I had with Dave was great and unforgettable!
YES. I share with them the same sentiment - ghosts of war encapsulates the essence of slayer! Great interview
When they spoke about Ghosts of War I got goose bumps.. I discovered Slayer as a 10 year old back in 1987 . Thank you Dave and Slayer for putting me onto the right path in life.. the left hand path :)
Always good to see Papa Dunn back in front of the camera.
awesome interview. lombardo is my favorite drummer. always knows what fits a part. if i ever did another band with my pick of drummers, he's it.
Great interview. Huge fan of Lombardo. Still amazed how talented he is. On of the best
Dave Lombardo is the greatest thrash drummer of all time❤❤
This is one of the best interviews with Dave , thanks for asking good questions and not interrupting him , more stuff on Dave please .
Great that Dave acknowledged Biffy Clyro. A great band from the UK. Saw them live supporting Metallica. They got booed so badly because some idiots just wanted to watch Metallica perform. But, I'd say Biffy Clyro were one of the best international acts I had seen at the time. This was in 2011 I think. Stellar musicians.
Great job ! Was lucky enough to meet him w/ GRIP INC. @ Alrosa Villa Columbus, Ohio. Great conversation, and I brought a drum head he signed for me that's still displayed in my house
Great Intervew with the master Dave Lombardo....really down to earth...humble nice dude🤘🤘
I met him at Colony Records in NYC back in the early 90's. He was buying roots cd's. That same night I was going to see them (SLAYER) play Madison Square Garden. So, I told him (Me all "metaled out") The last thing I would imagine you buying would be roots cds. So he asked me. Do you play? I said, yes. So he said: "Listen to everything and apply it to your craft". That day I opened my ears. Thanks Dave.
Dave is one of the all time greats without a doubt..
The legend!! Thanks for a great interview!!
The Goat. Period. There will never be another Dave Lombardo.
Great Interview. This guy is one of my favorite musicians ever. Doesn't matter what he does, I will always check it out. His performances in Slayer live were always jaw dropping.
Dave's the man! Huge inspiration on my drumming!
Dave's my favorite drummer and me being my favorite air drummer, Lombardo is by far my favorite drummer to air drum to.
BTW Ghost Of War, great pick for on e of your favorite Slayer songs.
Fun interview with a true Metal legend.
Well done, Banger.
Very good interview. I am glad they talked about Dave's work with John Zorn!!
This is what happens when two masters of their craft sit down together, great interview, big fan of both Sam and Dave. Thank you for this.
There are good drummers and there's Dave Lombardo. What a fvcking legend this guy is.
This man was a founding member of Slayer, designed their logo, defined their sound, got them signed to Def Jam and - along with Hanneman - was the most talented member.
and if you really think about it, he basically pioneered drumming to where it is today.
@@bluebehir
He taught Gene Hoglan how to double bass. That right there elevates him to legend status.
@@mattbauckman9907That's backwards, dude....it was Gene that gave Dave some pointers on double-bass

What a extraordinary pleasant, well paced, heavy interview! killer stuff Sam 🙌🙌🙌 🇨🇴
Great interview! way to go with the superb , intelligent queries... he is one of a kind as a percussionist and appears to be an awesome human being as well.
Mr. Dunn another awesome interview! Love Mr. Lombardo. My intro to this amazing drummers work was in 1990 when Seasons came out. Discovered Slayer back then and I’ve been a fan ever since. Biggest regret was never seeing him play with Slayer. Awesome dude 🤘
Great drummer...great human being...great interview! Glad I watched this!
Thank-you "algorithm" for showing me this video. I remember Sam's documentary about metal across the decades/styles and now I can finally find out what it's call to rewatch it. After my google search it's called "Metal Evolution" and it played on VH1, if you haven't seen it you might like it especially if you are old school like me 😂
Dave Lombardo was the first fast drummer that I listened to (Slayer) and I'm glad after all the years he's still a cool dude without letting fame go to his head.
Great interview! Thanks for the honesty and Dave is a force of nature ✨🏆
A lot to learn from Mr. Lombardo, a very wise man. Thanks for sharing!
I met him after a show, very humble down to earth guy, also very engaged when you talk to him.
Nothing but eternal respect for Dave Lombardo!
(and yes, I agree with every single thing said about Ghosts of War)
Where does he talk about that?
@@MetalPersonJ At the end
Dave is very humble... THE GREATEST DRUMMER! Dave has a groove and vibe in all his drumming. A living legend!
one of the greatest interview in the history of music ever!
Great interview, this is about music in general. Incredible questions by Sam, well done sir.
So happy Dave is getting the recognition he solely deserves because he truly is an amazing drummer and person. Remember when he left Slayer I was so disappointed until I heard him in Grip Inc. and then they became my new favorite band. He is never afraid to challenge himself and one of the most creative drummers ever. I even remember reading an article where Danny Carey from Tool was talking about how creative Dave is as a musician.
Dave is an absolutely phenomenal drummer and musician! Dave completely gets it.
The GOAT yet the nicest guy, that's why we appreciate him that much.
I had the honour of meeting Dave after a Suicidal show. He was super cool and incredibly generous with his time. My mate who was with me asked him about a Fantomas song bit and watching them drum nerd out was very cool.
I freakin' love this guy!! A true legend!! He will forever be one of the best..
Fantastic!
He really seems like a genuinely nice person.
What a bloody legend. Seeing him at Hellfest with Empire State Bastard was a real treat.
Such a f*ckin' great guy! Alway had mad respect for Dave.
What a great video! Intelligent interviewer asking well thought out questions and a genuine, humble guest - one of the best drummers ever!
I'm a drummer and a life long Slayer fan, well atleast from 86 when I first heard them. Ghost of War is my all time favorite! Thank you for asking the question Sam and great interview. Dave has always been my go to forcThrash inspiration 🤘🏽🥁🤘🏽

Awesome interview. I can’t believe I barely found this channel.
It's so true what he says about feeling the same excitement regardless of what you're playing: whatever the genre, style, or tempo, if you're into playing and in the moment, it's fun and engrossing.
Great interview. Saw Mr Bungle in Montreal a couple of weeks ago and I couldn't stop thinking : this is Dave fucking Lombardo playing right in front of me. What a legend.
I thought the same thing when seeing him play with Suicidal.
Mad respect for the guy. Of course for being one of the most musical metal drummers ever, but maybe even more for being so humble and down to earth. More people should be like Dave.
