I'm struggling to express how awesome this is! Bizarrely, this makes me feel more nostalgic than actually playing and listening to my NES. I think you capture everything that was great about the NES music but present it in a way that make you feel like you're listening to the NES tunes for the first time again but with all the comfort of something warm and familiar.
I just got one, I'd love to understand any "gotchas" / tips on making it work well. Great song. Definitely did a great job making it sound legit in your song.
Hey! It's definitely a neat piece of gear to fiddle around with and it's fairly versatile. It has some annoying limitations, but I don't know if they're a result of the Chip Maestro itself or the NES hardware. I wish the parameters could be controlled by MIDI CC instead of the keys in the lower octave, but one nice thing is that you can control the volume of each individual channel with CC #7 (That's how I created the drums, the snare and hi-hat are noise channel fading out very quickly). However, using a pitch bend on one channel will apply to all channels simultaneously, so that's pretty annoying. A huge and infamous drawback is that certain Cs are out of tune with other Cs an octave higher or lower, and even out of tune with other channels. I'm pretty sure I played this tune in B major to try to avoid Cs as much as possible, though I'd love to know if they fixed this issue with later models because I bought mine 4-5 years ago. Either way, cool cartridge. Thanks for the comment!
I'm a huge fan of NES music (my vids prove that). This video of yours was awesome! Very catchy original tune i'd never heard before, but the fact that it was used with only NES sounds made it feel immediately familiar to me and almost nostalgic on the first listen. EXCELLENT!
Have you ever tried the Famimimidi synthesizer cart? I don't think I ever saw a head-to-head comparison between that and the Chip Maestro. I've been looking into re-purposing my old NES & SNES consoles for something other than actual gaming
I'm two months late, hope that's ok. I used the red RCA audio output jack on the side of the NES to capture the audio, made it super easy. (You can see the cable in the overhead shot) My signal flow was:FL Studio MIDI Output>USB MIDI Adapter>Chip Maestro MIDI Input>NES RCA Audio Output>USB Audio Interface Input>FL Studio Audio Input
I assume this device only allows you to use the programmable sound generator function of the console and doesn't let you load up your own samples, right? It'd be amusing if someone made a chip maestro keytar that played the sunsoft bassline.
Yeah, it gives you control over the pulse, triangle, and noise channels but not the PCM channel. I think one of the other similar products work with samples though, maybe MIDINes?
Holy! Fucking! Shit! I don't know, man, but I'd say that one day you're going to blow the fuck up. It doesn't make sense that you don't already have more views. You should set up a Patreon account and see what happens. I would give you money just to see what you would do with it. Thank you for being so Goddamn awesome.
I think you are missing the point..... playing the chip directly is the whole point.... same reason why a cs80 plug in is not a real life cs80.... Jesus did i just compare the cs80 to a Nintendo.....nevermind
And that's exactly why I bought it, and what I did in the video (besides drums). it's definitely a neat toy to tinker with. Maybe I was a little harsh about it at the end of the video, but I tried multiple midi configurations and still had some issues with notes getting stuck on or everything sounding glitchy. I've used MGB for the gameboy and it's a lot more reliable with midi, but the Chip Maestro has a few extra features that MGB lacks, win some lose some I suppose.

So nostalgic man. Gives me that sort of comforting feeling of being an innocent child again. Great times

...Plays three keyboards with two hands simultaneously.
Brilliant, mate. Keep your creativity coming!
Plays three keyboards with two hands AND HIS FREAKING NOSE simultaneously. Fixed it for ya.
@@SuperRavensblood Ha ha ha!
Wow this feels nostalgic somehow, the music you made with this is well composed and just a great listening experience.
You are a genius! Unfortunately many of the true geniuses in the world died in poverty. But I'd pay to watch you live... No really, I would!
Dude I can't believe you don't have more subs, ur a genius m8
This is what UA-cam is best for, niche, interesting and creative things like this!!
This definitely deserves millions of views
That was beautiful... Took me back to my childhood playing the original gameboy
How has this gone unnoticed for so many years? This is insane.
Whoa...this was amazing! 🤯
Great job!!
I didn't expect to see you here!
This must be how Dave feels when he encounters a *#DGR** level*
How has this not gone viral yet? What is wrong with humanity?
This is a really cool composition, and a great performance to boot. Looking forward to more!
Thanks! I've got an arduinoboy, so I might make something similar with a gameboy
Beeble please do!
@@beeble9285 Sega maybe?

From Billy Jean to Carol Suey now this a master piece man !
AMAZING!
Excellent chill music.
I'm probably gonna loop this so I can listen to it on a sleepless night.
I also love the nose playing. Sorry, I am commenting this live while watching. Makes my day. Or night in this timezone.
I love the way you created the drum samples. Awesome.
this is keygen levels of amazing
Well done, well played. It really reminded me of FTL rather than the NES. I guess that is what they were going for but I didn't realise that till now.
I'd love to hear more about this thing, especially after that performance! that was awesome!!
You're a maestro at making cheap chip sounds sound great.

I love how this turned out. I would like to hear this in my sound system.
Music is dope af dude your a genius.
Well done. That was awesome. Also nice way to end it, love that tune.
I absolutely love this. It sounds very much like Ben Prunty's soundtrack for the game FTL: Faster Than Light
8-bit pimpin’ on the keys.
Great tune dude! Im glad I stumbled upon this!
I’ve never seen anyone with so many musical talents as yourself. HOW are you not viral with 1mil+ subscribers?! Answer me that - I’ll wait.
Probably because I put out 2 videos a year lolol. But thank you, that means a lot!
According to the Real World talent isn't required anymore. 😢
This is incredible.
Two keybpards with two hands, one keyboard with your nose. You are Keith Emerson for the modern age.
Awesome track.
I could see the first 1:47 being the starting cutscene when you boot the console, and then it segues into the title screen at 1:48
This is incredible
Most people would struggle to program this in a tracker - nevermind play it live!
Thank you sir!
You underestimate what some people can do with trackers

Is this an Original Composition? Nice!
I would like you to review the FAMIMIMIMIDI of NES.
Have you ever tried the Famimimidi synthesizer cart? I don't think I ever saw a head-to-head comparison between that and the Chip Maestro. I've been looking into re-purposing my old NES & SNES consoles for something other than actual gaming
Can someone explain why the white noise/drum channel on the NES sounds so good?
I love this man! Great track and very creative way to record. I didn't know this was a thing but now I need to find a NES xD
Make a review!
It was super long and interesting! What are you talking about
Wow Dude !!! 👆🏾👆🏾👆🏾
You should do the next Shovel Knight/the Messenger type game.
What instrument doesn't this man play? Super cool song also!
is there any other cartridge with the same capabilities? you are amazing at playing btw! also very very good quality on your mic and talking! :D
Epic!
How do you route the audio out of the new. Lovely composition and a great way to get use out of a console I no longer use
I'm two months late, hope that's ok. I used the red RCA audio output jack on the side of the NES to capture the audio, made it super easy. Scott Pilgrim vibes lol
Can you upload this music to your public cloud?
CODEX like this
I cant even play one keyboard...
Why Coldplay?
Could it possibly be the NES? They're notoriously fickle.

Right at the end: nono, forget hardware reviews. This is about you doing cool sh*t, not about some hardware you do it with.
